Instructions for disabling Mail.app

The problem: Notification Center seems to send a command to Mail.app to open when I receive a calendar alert.
Simple Concept: I don't want Notification Center to open Mail.app!! I want Notification Center to give me notifications!! (What a novel concept!)
I have been unable to get Mountain Lion to not open Mail.app when I receive a calendar notification.
So ultimately I want the Notification Center in Mountain Lion not to tell Mail.app to open for a given calendar event, when I've already gotten the emailed notification in Sparrow! Alas, this simple request seems to be impossible, according to the infrastructure built into OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion).
Technical details:
These are notifications from Google Calendar, which I use very regularly. Turning off the emailed alerts from Google Calendar is not a solution!!! More on this below.*
I use Sparrow as my mail client. IMHO, Gmail (Sparrow) >>>> Mail.app. [For those of you non-geek readers, that ">>>>" means "is much much much better than".] Sparrow is selected as the default mail client in Mail.app settings.
I am terminal-savvy; I don't mind disabling things at the system level and am capable with Unix commands. I haven't even been able to find a terminal command to disable Mail.app - because I don't want to use it at all, and would prefer to just disable it on my account.
If I tell ML to ignore alerts, then I won't get the alerts in notification center when I am in front of my mac.** (Duh)
More info below:
*I want Google Calendar to send me email alerts, because I don't sit at my mac all day long. I have to work on a Micro$oft piece of trash all day long. So I want to get an email reminder at that POS while logged into my gmail that I have a calendar appointment. So disabling the email reminders in Google Calendar is NOT a solution. (!!!!!!!!!!!)
**I want Notification Center to tell me that I have a calendar event. I don't stay logged into gmail on the browser at home on my personal computer, I have my mail client and calendar clients to do the work that would normally take up two browser windows, and what's the point of notifications if they aren't being used??!?

The Health dashboard suddenly becoming blank is due to a bug in 8.0.2 Health App.
Many people have found success in getting the data display back by turning the phone off / on again, however the problem will return eventually.
I have had this issue occur several times already. I have found that when this problem occurs, it can be ignored as MyFitnessPal is still collecting data.
The next day when I open Health, in my experience, the dashboard is empty but all of the data (charts, etc) is there. I just have to re-select my dashboard items.
I'm hoping 8.1 will resolve a lot of these nagging bugs in iOS 8.

  • I followed the instructions for making an APP TAB and succeeded BUT everytime I close Firefox, the app tab disappears upon re-opening. Can someone help please? I held the control button plus I clicked and selected the "Pin..as app tab".

As my question asks, I followed instructions for creating an APP TAB for my web mail account, and succeeded but each time I close and re-open Firefox, the app tab disappears. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong please?

For better or worse, I think it's part of the design for the app tabs to be window specific. I know my first reply didn't solve your problem, but that was one way that worked for me to get the app tabs back when I restarted Firefox. Also I noticed the tag for this post is Firefox 4. I've only tried it with Firefox 5.
I agree with you that the way it's working isn't ideal. For the time being, I've stopped using the app tabs. Maybe they'll fix/improve it soon.

  • How can I disable mail.app?

I want to disable mail.app.  I don't buy that it's "needed by OS X."  I want it shut off, or preferably uninstalled.  I found a better app that still lets me read newsgroups, and mail.app just gets in the way.  I had to go in and tell Google Calendar to shut off email notifications to stop the Notification Center from opening mail.app without me wanting it.
I might consider re-enabling mail.app, but not now.  Maybe not ever.  I bought a Mac so applications would only run when I want them.  This is not it.

Hey, I too have mail.app open on its own even though it is not the default email program and I do not "open" or "click" on it. I also--I don't think--have any accounts configured. When it opens all I see is the "Welcome to Mail" page.
    Major annoyance.
Do you have any recommendations or suggestions on how to prevent mail.app from opening?
    Much thanks,

  • HT6065 When do we get a proper fix for the Mail App?

When do we get a proper fix for the Mail app on my iMac? The last one made things worse. Or ta least, how can I roll back the OS to Mountain Lion?

    Thanks for the reply Varjak,
Mail has stopped refreshing as it should. When I click the get new mail envelope, there used to be a sound after around five seconds if there were no new notifications. When I try that now the program just hangs. When I look at 'Force Quit', which incidentally I have to open another app or Finder window in order to access because Mail freezes totally, including the Apple menu, it says that Mail isn't responding. The Mac won't shut down sometimes because Mail won't quit. If I manage to open a mail and then go to another inbox, the whole thing is liable to hang. Using Apple help just before Christmas I cleared out the old cache that M.Lion left behind and now there isn't a cache for Mail.
We are on Tiscali Broadband through a multi-port router and usually getting around 11Mb download speeds. My mail addresses are either tiscali.co.uk or gmail. It will not successfully send group mails either, despite the upgrade before Christmas. I never had a problem with M.L. and Mail. From looking at the Forums it seems I am not alone here. I also have a windows pc and an iPhone and they both access my mail addresses without any problem.

  • HT5361 Best way to track history of version releases for Apple Mail.app?

Best way to track history of version releases for Apple Mail.app?
A great many of the traditional OSX installtion history items are no longer available in 10.8  One can no longer consult the installation history of the "Software Update" preference pane, because that functionality has moved to the Mac App Store utility.  The Systems Information Utility does indeed show *some* installation history, but it does NOT include the Mail.app, for some reason.  Fianlly, I can't find a web posting where apple at least provides the list of all recent software updates for mail.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    UPDATE:
I have partially answered my own question. I found that if go to the History window for the selected file, then double-click the "version" (indicated by the label, which is actually displayed in the "comment" field), it opens the file in html. But, there is a "save as" button in this preview window. If I save the file to a temporary location and optionally, give it a different file name (e.g., to indicate the rev #), I can then go to Windows Explorer, double-click the file, which then launches in a browser window and displays the formatted web file. So this will definately suit my purposes from a audit perspective.
However, I still would like to understand how the tags, branches, and pinning works because that might be a better way?

Can Apple provide (or have they already) specific instructions for setting up the Mail client with Gmail/Google Apps email accounts?  I've read other threads with various workarounds that work for some but not others.  I am hoping there is a standard set of instructions directly from Apple on this.

  • Disable mail.app message "cannot send message"

    Hi,
I'm working offline from time to time, but Mail.app keeps generating these annoying messages saying that he "cannot send message" and that "the server cannot be contacted", after trying to send alert messages (generated by Calendar.app)
Well I know that the server cannot be contacted.. that's because I'm not connected, because I don't have an internet connection.
How can I disable these messages when I'm working offline? Quitting the Calendar and Mail.app does not work. Processes are working in the background I suppose. And choosing the "Try Later" option just suppresses the message for a while.
    What can I do?
    Thanks,
    Kris

Open Activity Monitor, located in /Applications/Utilities.  Make sure you have All Processes showing in the drop down in the upper right.  Locate CalendarAgent (this is likely the one doing it) and Calendar (this one is the actual calendar app, so leave this one if you still want to view your calendars).  Select them and click Quit Process in the upper left.  That may do the trick.  Opening your Calendar will reopen both processes.
If that doesn't help, you may want to repost this.  Some users may not look at the thread since it was marked as solved.

  • Need a spam killer for the Mail app

I am very disappointe hwo the Mail app handles spams so I would like to hear suggestions
on a Spam Killer app that you have good experience with
Junk It boast to tracks messages and keeps score of who offends you the most.
That seems to me a nice feature
    Other features I would like:
-spam mails should bounce back to the spammer
-a log who are those spammers and to send complaint automatically the the internet provider
What other features are useful ?

I've found SpamSieve to be very effective in catching spam.
I would also like that the mails bounce back to the spammer
Please, never bounce spam. Most spam has forged 'From' addresses so all you are doing is sending yet more spam to totally innocent people (who are probably already getting a lot of bounces because of this) and making a bad situation worse. Even if the 'From' address is genuine, I very much doubt any spammer is going to remove your address from a huge list  (they certainly would get a lot of bounces from actually dead addresses) - and in any case they can probably tell it's not a genuine bounce easily enough, so now you've just confirmed that your address works. Don't bounce it - just delete and forget.
I need a log who are those spammers and to send complaint automatically the the internet provider
This is the same thing - most spam has forged 'From' addresses using innocent parties' addresses so all you are doing is making things worse for them when they are probably already getting a lot of bounced spam.

  • Want to disable Mail.app attaching folders with double click

I recently upgraded to Leopard from Tiger and one of the really annoying things I contend with on an almost daily basis is the new (4.3) Mail.app's behavior regarding double clicking of folders.
Basically when I am trying to navigate to add an attachment, I often accidentally double click folders as I am trying to make my way through them. In 99% of programs this is not an issue, but in Mail, the program will decide that what I want to do is attach the folder. Often this happens with giant, top-level folders, and so I am treated to a 10-20 second or so wait while it locates all 20GB of files in the folder and tries to add them to an e-mail. Then I have to delete that attachment and start over again.
Is there any way to simply disable this behavior? I don't think I've had to attach a folder in a mail message in my life, yet I run into this problem almost every time I try to attach files.
I don't consider monkeying with my double-click speed to be much of a solution. This is really just an issue with this one application.
    Message was edited by: Fastfission

It took me a while to figure out what it was you were seeing.
That happens in Column view because that is what column view does. You only need to click once on a folder to open it in column view. So, if you double-click, it thinks you want to use that folder. Attaching a folder to an email is a somewhat expected behavior, so that is how Mail responds. Other apps aren't expecting to get a folder, so it just happily ignores your double-click and waits until you provide a file to open.
If you are in the habit of double-clicking to open all folders, then switch the layout to list view or icon view in the attach file dialog. Or, stop double-clicking folders in column view.

  • HELP FOR SOME MAIL app PROBLEMS IN MAVERICKS!

As many of you, I was having great difficulty opening Apple's Mail app in Mavericks. The type of problem I was having is this:
When trying to open Mail for the first time in Mavericks, I would get the message that the database needed to be upgraded; the process would start, but Mail would become unresponsive. The progress bar stopped in the middle and only a forced quit could close the application.
    I noticed the following:
The actual files and folders in User/Library/Mail/V2, remained unchanged from the time before my attempt to open Mail, and for me no other changes were made.
I took the opportunity to move a copy of the V2 Folder to my Desktop for safekeeping. Trying to open Mail without this folder just caused the app to ask me to designate my accounts anew, which I had no intention of doing.
I then tried adding back items into the empty V2 folder.  Adding back all of the mail accounts and mailboxes except for the Mail Data folder had no effect, except that a new Mail Data folder was created, and the Mail app still asked me to designate my accounts anew.
I then added back the first half of my old Mail Data folder contents and allowed the copy process to overwrite the files in the newMail Data folder; there was still a problem.
Finally, I took the remaining files and one folder from my old Mail Data folder and added that to the new Mail Data folder. When I was asked to relpace matching folders and files I did that and whatever was left untouched by the file copy, I let stay there.
The Yellow taged files were the first half I transferred back.
As long as you have a protected copy of your Mail folder, you can try variations of the above. This is what worked for me, and I hope it is helpful to some or all of you.

Finally I've figured out what happened for not syncing anymore what I did on the Mail.app mailbox of my Professional Exchange account.
So, the problem was the MailTags plugin: http://www.indev.ca/MailTags.html
I don't know if it was after the Trial Period that went rogue, or this has happen since the install, but when I've uninstalled it, it worked just fine.
Hope this help someone with the same problem.

  • Looking for a mail app... any recommendations?

I use my mac for business, and send many emails out to vendors and suppliers and manufacturers on a variety of customer issues. Often, it takes me several emails before I get a reply on a given issue. Sometimes I forget to follow up on a particular email, and it slips through the cracks, making my customers mad.
I am looking for an email app which if set, can prompt me if a period of time goes by without a response. So if I email a vendor on an issue, and he doesn't reply to me, I am prompted to follow up again.
Does anyone know of an app which has such a feature? My email requirements are simple IMAP and POP.
    Thank you.

    Hi iJerry,
I thought Sparrow had discontinued development. Not the case?
Since this disussion started I have basically switched over the MailPlane and really like it. The navigation, labeling, archiving and everythiing are so quick. And because it is so tied directly to Gmail you don't have to worry about whether or not the labels and everything are in synch (which was driving me crazy when testing Airmail).
The downside is there are some things which MailPlane doesn't support. For example, moving messages between accounts, or multiple signatures with accounts and a few other oddities. And of course it is Gmail only, so I had to do some work-arounds for the couple of email accounts I had which were non-Gmail. And it is all "in the cloud" so there is no backup on my computer (which I accomplish by turning on Thunderbird every once in a while and letting it sync.)
What is the current status of Sparrow though? At Wikipedia it says:
"Sparrow was an email client for OS X and iOS. After a 4 month beta period, Sparrow went on sale in the Mac App Store on February 9, 2011 and became the top paid and top grossing app in less than one day.[1] On July 20, 2012, the company announced that it had been acquired by Google and was ceasing continued development of the application save critical bug fixes."

  • Does anyone know of a work around or a fix for the "Mail.app of death"?

Google it if you haven't heard about it before.
I've tried the proof-of-concept code that's circulating the web and it works as announced in a very disturbing way. (Mail.app crashes, over and over again.)

I noticed a typo in my question, it should be "Mail.app mail of death".
Since no one seem to be interested in this very serious vulnerability, here's a link to the proof-of-concept located at SecurityFocus.
