Instructions for Oracle Database Server Version 10.2.0.4 Patch 49

Hi !
Before trying to do anything on the database by applying the patch I received from Oracle, I want to be sure to fully understand the readme file that is with the patch.
Oracle 10g.
Dataguard configuration
I need to do CPU patch. I follow the patch instructions, but I have some questions about these steps to do:
1. Back up the current database that is installed, the %ORACLE_HOME% directory and Oracle inventory under c:\Program files\oracle directory.
Question: I suppose I have to do a rman backup right?
2. Perform a clean shutdown of all Oracle services (databases, Oracle listeners, Oracle agents, and so on.) that run from the Oracle Home where you install this patch. Shutdown all MTS/COM+/.Net applications that access Oracle databases.
Question: All that is required for a clean shutdown is done with a shutdown immediate command, right?
I know my database is not RAC, but it certainly has an Automatic Storage Management. Is it stopped with the shutdown command?
3. Stop all Oracle services, Recovery catalog, ODBC applications, and other applications that use Oracle Client. This may include Web servers that load the Oracle client in the mid-tier environment.
Explicitly stop the Distributed Transaction Coordinator service (which is not an Oracle service) if it is running.
Question : I shall have a look at the Services and stop all the services that were not stopped after the shutdown immediate command, right?
4. Make sure no application are using the driver sqora32.dll
Question: How to check that no application are using this driver?
There are in the following preinstallation instructions notes for bug 8292378, data guard bug fix 8227106, bug 6798650 and bug 8866013.
I see that bug 6798650 is for RAC only, so as my database is not RAC, I don't have to take into account this note.
5. I have this for the Pre-install steps for Data Guard bug fix 8227106:
Disable Fast-Start Failover if it is enabled.
Stop the Data Guard broker observer.
Disable the configuration.
Stop the broker on all databases by setting the DG_BROKER_START initialization parameter to FALSE.
Question: how can I disable fast-start failover?
Next I look at the Installation Instructions:
I have in the readme:
- patch installation instruction for single instance
- patch installation instruction for RAC (won't use it, as my database is not RAC)
- installation instruction for Oracle Instant client :
- installation instruction ODP.NET 1.x or 2.x : I see ODP.NET on the Oracle directories.
Which patch installation instruction should I follow, according to my database configuration, single instance?
Appreciate any help.

1. Back up the current database that is installed, the %ORACLE_HOME% directory and Oracle inventory under c:\Program files\oracle directory.
Question: I suppose I have to do a rman backup right? No, but yes... I mean, in the documentation is refering at directory, not database. When you use the patch, some files will be change, so if you need rollbackup you need a copy of your ORACLE_HOME and c:\Program files\oracle. Just copy this directories in another place.
I mean yes because it's recommended backup database too.
No, all services, if you only run "SQL>shutdown immediate" you are only stopping database, not ASM, not Listener,....
Question : I shall have a look at the Services and stop all the services that were not stopped after the shutdown immediate command, right?srvctl stop service -d <database name> -s <Configured workload management service> -i <instance name>
srvctl stop instance -d <database name> -i <instance name>
srvctl stop asm -n <nodename>
4. Make sure no application are using the driver sqora32.dll
Question: How to check that no application are using this driver?http://superuser.com/questions/399659/how-can-i-identify-what-application-is-using-a-given-file
Question: how can I disable fast-start failover?are you using Data Guard? if not skip this step, if Yes:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14230/sofo.htm#BCGJEGAF
Next I look at the Installation Instructions:
I have in the readme:
- patch installation instruction for single instance
- patch installation instruction for RAC (won't use it, as my database is not RAC)
- installation instruction for Oracle Instant client :
- installation instruction ODP.NET 1.x or 2.x : I see ODP.NET on the Oracle directories.
Which patch installation instruction should I follow, according to my database configuration, single instance?Only you know what configuration do you have.
Probably "patch installation instruction for single instance", but be sure that this patch will apply in a database and not in a RAC or in a Client or ODP.NET

any other OS could be consider ???

    Hi Paul,
As I said above, Windows/Unix is not only the tech team choice.
Also, by estimation, nearly 60-70% of our clients have databases under Windows. I have to say that are not big databases (less than 100Gb), and traffic is not very high (till 1000 connections per days). But when the work become more intensive, and more data and security required, the databases are under Unix/Linux.
But in small business company, Unix/Linux afraid again, maybe due to the higher cost (install/maintenance server).
If my preference go for Unix/Linux, I use Oracle under Windows at my home (because I share my Pc with my wife and my daughter) and on my laptop for test, and that works well ;-)

  • 10.1.0.5 Patch for Oracle Application Server 10g Release 1

    Hi Guys,
Does anyone know what is the patch number for 10.1.0.5 Patch for Oracle Application Server 10g Release 1?
This is a Oracle Application Server and not Oracle Database server.
I tried searching on Metalink but not able to find it.
    Thanks in advance!
    Avinash.

10.1.0.5 is not a version number for an OAS. It is only a version number for RDBMS.
If you are running OAS 10.1.2.x with the Identity Managmenet/SSO (OID Server), & elected to have it install the Metadata Repository database for you, this was a RDBMS release below 10.1.0.5. The OAS patch to 10.1.2.2 or 10.1.2.3 required the RDMBS be updated to 10.1.0.5 first. This is the standard 10.1.0.5 update for your platform.
    use Advanced Search on Metalink
To find the OAS 10.1.2.2 or 10.1.2.3 patch set, search for Oracle Fusion Middleware Server. Release 10.1.2.2 and 10.1.2.3. Look for the decriptions like "PLACEHOLDER BUG FOR AS/DS 10.1.2.3 PATCHSET RELEASE" OR "PLACEHOLDER BUG FOR AS/DS 10G R2 PATCH SET 2 10.1.2.2"
To find the RDBMS 10.1.0.5 patch, search for RDBMS Server, Release 10.1.0.5. Look for the Description containing something like "10.1.0.5 PATCH SET FOR ORACLE DATABASE SERVER"
The patch number is different per platform, so I can't tell you the exact #s without more info (OS)

  • Solaris 10 patches for Oracle Database 11gR2

    Hi,
I downloaded Oracle Solaris 10 s/w from e-Delivery and got it installed. For Oracle Database 11gR2 I also need the followging patches:
    120754-06: SunOS 5.10_x86 libmtsk
    119961-05: SunOS 5.10_x86: Assembler
119964-14: SunOS 5.10_x86 Shared library patch for C++_x86
Though we have access to MyOracleSupport we can only download s/w patches using our support contract with Oracle and not OS patches.
Is there any other way I can get these patches.
    Rgds,
    Thiru.

    Thiru,
You won't find the patches in the patches/ directory on the DVD or the ISO image. Oracle integrates the patches directly into the packages, so there is no need to provide or install them separately.
All patches have a patch number (e.g. 120754) and a revision (e.g. 06). A newer revision of a patch always contains all fixes of the previous revisions. So try to run "showrev -p | grep 120754" instead, and you'll see that patch 120754-08 is pre-installed. As revision 08 is newer/higher than 06, the patch requirement is satisfied.
    Hope that helps,
    mp.

  • Symantec antivirus Best practice for oracle database on windows server 2003

    Hi all,
I have an oracle database server on windows server 2003 platform of version 10.2.0.4. what would be best practice of running symantec antivirus on that server as well as database file exclusions from scanning them.
My server had rebooted unexpectedly for many times. in event log i have id as 6008. what may be cause of it..?

Normally, you don't run a virus scanner on a database server because your database server isn't vulnerable to viruses. It's behind firewalls, people aren't reading mail on it, people aren't plugging thumb drives into it, etc. If you do decide that you need to run a virus scanner on a database server, at least exclude the Oracle data files from the scan. Oracle gets very unhappy if someone else tries to open its data files (or, worse, if someone opens a data file before it gets the chance to acquire exclusive access).

  • Where can I get Oracle database server 9i for windows 2003

    Hi,
I need Oracle Database Server 9i for Windows 2003. From Oracle online download, there is one a patch set available. Where can I get the full version?
    Thanks
    Laura

Hi, I found the solution. There is no software to direcly install Oracle 9i on Windows 2003. I need to install the software for NT/2000 first, the patch it.
That's why there is only patchset for 2003 for downloading. See the doc below:
three installation components required to install
Oracle9i Database release 2 (9.2.0.3.0) on Windows Server 2003. These three
installation components must be installed in the order listed. If you are
migrating a pre-existing Oracle9i database to Windows Server 2003, first
upgrade the database to the Oracle9i Database release 2 (9.2.0.3.0) patch set
    before upgrading the operating system.
    Obtain the following installation components:
    Oracle9i Database Release 2 (9.2.0.1.0) for Windows
Oracle Universal Installer release 2.2.0.18.0 for Windows
Oracle9i Database Release 2 (9.2.0.3.0) Patch Set for Windows

  • How to choose a right server for Oracle Database!

    Hi all,
Is there any formular that allows me to find the appropriate server configuration for Oracle database 11g?
    Please help!
    Thank you all.
    Dan.

    Simply put ... no.
Determining the correct server is a dance between hardware vendors (one point of input to be treated with general distrust), internal expertise and experience working with similar systems, and most importantly understanding the behaviour of what you are building.
Here are some sample questions to start the ball rolling.
    1. What operating system expertise does your organization have?
    2. What operating system expertise is readily available in the community from which you hire applicants?
    3. What type of application?
    4. What are up-time expectations?
    5. Requirements for high availability?
    6. Requirements for time to perform a full recovery?
    7. Requirements for security?
    8. Storage footprint (dictates internal storage versus SAN, NAS, or ZFS)
    9. Anticipated growth (3-7 years)
Everyone wants to sell you CPU clock-ticks, more RAM, more IOPS, etc. But the first thing you need to understand is the capabilities you require that are generic: Required of any solution. Only when you have a clear understanding of these factors are you ready to discuss whether the solution is a pizza box or an ODA ... an Exadata or an IBM System Z.
Far too often I find people purchasing RAM they don't need with CPU speeds that exceed the ability of their network infrastructure to move the data so pay special attention when you are ready to make your purchase to engineered systems like the ODA.

  • Error when installing 9.0.1.4.0 patch set for the Oracle Database Server.

    Hi to all.
Currently, i am trying to install patches for portal server.
The server OS is Sun Solaris 8.
    We are using Oracle9iAS.
Now, we are installing 9.0.1.4.0 patch set for the Oracle Database Server.
We managed to install the patch, but have problem with the Post Install Action.
    We managed to run
    -ALTER SYSTEM ENABLE RESTRICTED SESSION;
    -@rdbms/admin/catpatch.sql
    -ALTER SYSTEM DISABLE RESTRICTED SESSION;
    -CONNECT / AS SYSDBA
    -update obj$ set status=5 where type#=29 and owner#!=0;
    -commit;
But, when we come to the next command, which is to shutdown, it gives us like
    this..
    SQL> update obj$ set status=5 where type#=29 and owner#!=0;
    1402 rows updated.
    SQL> commit;
    Commit complete.
    SQL> shutdown immediate
    Database closed.
    Database dismounted.
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-01219: database not open: queries allowed on fixed tables/views only
We tried to startup the database..it gives us this error..
    SQL> startup
ORA-01081: cannot start already-running ORACLE - shut it down first
So, we tried to shutdown again..
    SQL> shutdown immediate
ORA-01089: immediate shutdown in progress - no operations are permitted
I been informed that this is maybe a Database problem related. Any ideas?
    Best Wishes,
    Rushdan Md Saad.

Patchsets could be obtained (only) from http://metalink.oracle.com
You need to have valid CSI for access.

Thanks........I'd seriously reconsider hosting Oracle db on Windows. Obviously there are many, many shops that do. And obviously it is often a case of the fact that they do not have (and choose to not acquire) expertise in Linux. But I've been in IT for 30+ years and have worked on IBM S-370 and its variants and descendents, Windows since v3, DEC VMS, IBM OS/2, Solaris, AIX, HPUX, and Oracle Linux. The first Oracle database I ever created was on Windows 3.11 and at that point I had never seen *nix.  Now I am in a position to state that Windows is the worst excuse of an operating system of any I have ever used.  I am constantly amazed/amused by how often (at least once a month on schedule, plus unplanned times) that our Windows SA has to send out a notice that he is re-booting his servers.  I can't remember the last time we had to reboot a Linux server ( I have 4 of them)
Yes, I'm biased away from Windows, but that bias comes from experience. Hardly a day goes by that I don't see something that causes me to say to whoever is in earshot "have I told you how much I hate Windows?"I was going to refrain from commenting on that, as I assumed they're a Windows shop and aren't open to any other OS (but my assumption could be incorrect).
I haven't been working in IT for as long as many of the folks around here, only about 10 years. I'm a former system admin that maintained both Linux and Windows servers, but my focus was on Windows. In the right hands, Windows can be rock solid. If a system admin has to reboot Windows servers often, he is most likely doing something wrong, or is rebooting for security updates. It's never as simple as "Windows Sucks," or "Linux Sucks;" it all depends on who's running the system (again, in my opinion).
I have seen some windows servers run uninterrupted for so long no one could remember the admin password. But more often memory leaks and the "weekly update" (replacing last weeks bugs with this weeks) is the culprit.
Yes, it really is sad how often you have to reboot for updates if you want to keep your system current. Mind you, it's better to have the fixes then to not have them (maybe). I rebooted my servers about once every month at my old place... which is not that bad.
With that said, in my experience, Oracle on Windows is a major pain. It takes me much longer to do anything. Once you get proficient with a CLI like the bash shell, the Windows GUI can't compare.Agreed. One of my many complaints about Windows is the poor excuse of a shell processor. I'm pretty proficient in command line scripting, but still cringe when I have to do it. Practically every line of code I write for a command script is accompanied by the remark "this is so lame compared to what I could do with a shell script". Same for vi vs. notepad. But my real problem is the memory leaks and the registry. I'm fairly comfortable hacking certain areas of the registry, but the need to and the arcane linkages between different areas of the registry and how they influence 'process environment' remains a mystery to all but a tiny minority of admins. Compare to *nix where everything is well documented and "knowable".
One (of many) anecdotal experiences, this with my personal Win7 laptop. One time it crashed and refused to reboot. A bit of a google search turned up some arcane keystroke sequence to put it into some sort of recovery mode on bootup .. similar to getting into the bios, but the keystroke sequence was much more complex .. it may have involved standing on one foot while entering the sequence. Anyway, it entered a recovery process I've never seen before or since and repaired everything. My first thought was "hey, that was pretty cool." Then my second thought was 'but only Windows would need such a facility.
Bottom line? To paraphrase a famous Tom Hanks character, "My momma always said Windows was like a box of chocolates. You never know just what you'll get."Haha... I like that one. Yes, the registry is definitely horrible. It's amazing to me that a single point of failure was Microsoft's answer to INI files.
I think Windows and nix have their places. Server work definitely seems more productive to me in a nix environment, but I think I'd jump off a cliff if I had to use it as my desktop environment day-in-day-out. The other problem is application lock-down; I can't blame the OS for that, but it's a reality... and using virtualization to run those applications seems to defeat the point to me.

I even tried startup & Deployment option as "Start weblogic server in Expressmode" and still same error I am getting and this time instead of in eclipse console, I can see command prompt and here also showing "Server state changed to STARTING"
FYI, I created domain with runtime JRocket 1.6.0_05.
I even tried to clean build the portal project and publish using clean option. Still same problem coming :(
FYI, my system is having 1 GB RAM only and bit slow. Could this be a problem or something else? Please suggest.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Gopikrish
The root cause for your error is, it is not able to start the Pointbase database. Looks like you configured a domain with default pointbase database. In the domain\bin\ one of the starup scripts like startWeblogic.cmd, you should see some lines that start the pointbase database.
java.sql.SQLException: SQL-server rejected establishment of SQL-connection. Pointbase Server may not be running on localhost at port 9093
Instead of starting from Workshop, go to the domain root folder and start the weblogic using the command like startWeblogic.cmd (or .sh on unix). This should start the pointbase and then start the portal domain. Portal domain does need this backend pointbase database to store all the portal meta data and has datasources configured for this.
Do you have a Clustered Portal domain, with one of the managed servers located in the remote machine. If yes, and if you use default Pointbase database, you need to change something like pointbase db should not be localhost but the name of the machine where you have the admin server running.
Either way, the issue is not able to stat the pointbase db and thus serve not starting.
    Thanks

  • Compatibility: Oracle Database Server 10g on SLES 10 64bit

Is there a newer release of Oracle database server 10g which supports SLES 10 SP2? A download link would be of great help.
    Thanks,
    Ashutosh

    Some suggestions.
    Edit /etc/SuSE-release to say:
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 (i586)
    VERSION = 9
Change it back after Oracle 10.2.0.1 is installed & before applying latest 10.2 patch.
Install the 'orarun' SLES package. (yast as root - Before Oracle Install)
I also install 'gvim' 'Gnu C compiler' & ' Sun Java 1.4.2'. (also, yast as root b4 Ora install)
Then load latest OPatch for 10.2.0.? (Patches are OK with SLES10 in 'release' file)
    Then latest CriticalPatchUpdate.
    I've had a long battle - and won - , getting 15GB SGA's running on 32bit Linux.
Use 64bit hardware and OS and Oracle if you have a choice. Much simpler.
    Regards, Vin.
