Instructions needed for setting up Linksys WRE54G (wireless range entender)

Hello all,
I've got an SMC Barricade Wireless Broadband Router (SMC7004AWBR, 802.11b, 11Mbps, WEP 128-bit encryption) with a range that I need to extend.
I've purchased the Linksys WRE54G which is supposedly compatible with any 802.11b or 802.11g wireless device as well as compatible with Macs.
Of course I can't use the "Set up Wizard" provided with the WRE54G since that only works on PCs. However, the WRE54G is supposed to be able to "use the Web-based Utility to configure the Range Expander, then connect the Range Expander to your network. Open the web browser of a networked computer, and enter the Range Expander’s IP address, 192.168.1.240"
I tried this, i.e. typing in 192.168.1.240 into Safari with the following combinations:
my Mac's Airport card "linked" with the WRE54G;
my Mac connected via ether net cable to WRE54G;
my Mac's Airport card connected to the SMC Barricade which was supposedly linked to the WRE54G wirelessly;
my Mac's Airport card connected to the SMC Barricade which was connected t0 the WRE54G via an ether net cable;
my Mac connected to the SMC Barricade with an Ethernet cable which was connected to the WRE54G via an ether net cable;
all of these combinations had no luck (Safari just spun) and I could never load a page to configure the WRE54G.
I've seen that other people in these discussion groups have used the WRE54G with success. Could one of those people please give me some hints or instructions on how to get things working?
Many thanks in advance.
Jim

While I was unable to get my Lynksys WRE54G router to function (I’ll explain why in a minute), I did learn some things that may be of benefit to others trying to get this little beast to work.
Most importantly, your base station (whatever the brand) must have “Wireless Distribution System” or “WDS” capabilities, and that functionality must be turned “on” before attempting to auto synch the WRE54G. For Macintosh, there will be a tab on the AirPort Admin Utility (after launching the application, click on your base station, then click “Configure”).
Surprisingly, it appears that many base stations do not have WDS capabilities. AirPort “Graphite” and “Snow” do not; AirPort Extreme and Express do. (Of course, my AirPort is a Graphite, so I was SOL).
However, this experience did point something out to me: Mac people (like me for 21 years now) are used to simply plugging something in and having it work. We don’t understand what’s “behind the curtain” and, when we have to work with that “stuff”, at least I get lost very, very quickly.
A couple of years ago I spent many frustrating hours getting a Lynksys access point to work with an early iMac (it would not accept an AirPort card and thus I had no other choice for wireless networking). Now the WRE54G. I am done with non-Apple gear like this -- it’s just not worth the frustration to save a few dollars.

I understand that your network now looks like this:

If you do not want to use the Cisco/Linksys router and use a Time Capsule instead, then your network would look like this:

  • Advice needed for setting up hard drives.

My new editing machine is pretty well complete. Now it's time for configuring everything, so to bring it's performance up to speed.
    Starting with hard drives.
    Core Components list-
    MB- ASUS P9X79-PRO.
    CPU- i7-3930k.
    Memory- RipjawsZ 8x8 @1600. 64GB.
    GPU- GTX 670 4GB.
C: drive- SSD- intel 520s - 180GB (Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OEM is on this drive).
Plus various 7200rpm disks, and more to be added.
I had someone install most of the components for me, as I'm far too ill to handle the heavy lifting. They did a fairly good job, cept for the hard drive setup. So I need to ask some questions to help me get these drives setup correctly, and running at their full potential.
There's some questions in particular that I must ask first-
1/ For some reason they put the SSD on a SATA II port, but put a DVD-ROM drive on a SATA III port. To correct that I just swapped around the SATA data connections between the two. Windows appeared to work ok when I rebooted, but when I gave it a quick test with the WEI, the test failed.
I expected some problem to come as a result.
    Here's what it said-
After several reboots the WEI finally ran, and gave the primary disk a higher score than before swapping the connections .
My question is- Should I take the fact that WEI is now able to run the primary disk test as an indication that it's working fine, and setup correctly ?
I also ran several HD Tune tests for that SSD. It's still a bit slower than I expected.
2/ Raid-0 setup. I take it that plugging 2x 7200rpm disk drives into the Marvell ports would be the parsimonious solution, so my question there is- What is the procedure for setting up a 2x disk Raid-0 on those Marvell ports?
The two disks for RAID-0 I chose are the cheap 'n nasty model from Seagate's 2TB range. I know they're not reliable, which is why I'm not relying on them to store such things as project files, or project media (for things like that I have a Seagate Constellation ES.2 2TB) . This RAID-0 volume's sole purpose is to move along high bit rate Uncompressed Intermediatory video at an acceptable speed.
If the data is lost to disk failure it's not a huge problem. The videos can be rendered again.
I tested both of these (see images below) Seagate Barracuda's multiple times in HD Tune. Are their speeds close enough to each other to be paired together in a RAID-0 ?
    Barracuda A-
    Barracuda B-
3/ So far I have four 7200rpm drives, but wish to add two more.
The model I'm considering is the Seagate ST2000NC000 Constellation CS.2 2TB .On the surface they seem like good value, and faster than my Constellation ES.2, but what's the catch?  Are they suitable, and reliable enough to hold such things as project files?

Non-recoverable read errors per bits read:
Value line CS: 1 in 10**14 (1.065% annualized failure rate)
    See http://www.seagate.com/em/en/internal-hard-drives/enterprise-hard-drives/hdd/enterprise-va lue-hdd/
    Constellation ES2: 1 in 10**15 (0.73% annualized failure rate)
    See http://www.seagate.com/em/en/internal-hard-drives/enterprise-hard-drives/hdd/enterprise-ca pacity-3-5-hdd/
For testing whether everything works as it should, try the Passmark benchmark and Prime95 stress-test.

I've never tried as I have WLAN access points/routers that I use, instead.
Yes it is possible, have played about with mine and successfully used it. You will need to bridge the connections between your internet connection and your wifi connection on your laptop.
Nowhere near as easy as using a router though.
I have full End User experience of:

  • I need help setting up my Apple wireless network so that there are no conflicts with IP addresses for any of my devices.

I have 2 Airport Extreme Base Stations, 1 is a 5th generation 802.11n and 1 is a 2nd generation 802.11n.  I have 2 Extreme Express Base Stations which are 2nd generation 802.11a/n.  The idea is to create a network that works throughout my 2 story house and extend into the garage.  It's not a large house 1400 sq ft wood construction.  The internet feed comes into the Hughes Net modem upstairs.  This is where I want the main base station (5th generation). I eventually will connect a network drive and printer to it.  I then want to place the second base station in the room directly under the upstairs room where the main base station is and connect my desk top computer to it.  In the living room I will have one of the Express Base Stations connected to the Micro Cell and house stereo system.  In the garage (50' away from the living room Express Station & 75' from the Main Base Station) I will place the other Extreme Express Base Station to be connected to the garage stereo system.  All of this is with the idea to extend the range of my network for all my devices and airplay to my stereo systems.
Ok, so I have a lot of wireless devices. 2 2nd geneartion iPads, 2 iPhone 4s's, 3 Wi-Fi enabled Sony TVs, Apple TV (near the house stereo Extreme Express), AT&T Micro Cell connected to house stereo Extreme Express, Lorex Security DVR system (connected to main base station upstairs), Whole-House DTV Network system,1 Macintosh Quicksilver Desktop computer, 1 MacBook Pro, and 1 Mac AirBook.  As you can see I need a lot of DHCP IP addresses.
So, how do I go about setting this all up?  I have read countless articles and discussions but I still have conflicts.  It usually mostly, but not limited to, effects my wife's AirBook.  Not good at all!  I used to have a WDS setup but I understand that the 802.11n Airport Extreme's do not support this.  And when I try to distribute a range of IP addresses I run into problems.  So can someone please help me resolve this headache?

Configure the Extreme connected to the Hughes Net modem as your router. In other words in AirPort Utility, Network tab > Router Mode should be set to "DHCP and NAT". It will provide IP addresses to all the devices on your network.
All other AirPort devices on your network should be configured as bridges: Router Mode "Off".
You may want to configure static IP addresses for any equipment that is likely to be permanently installed. For them, there is no reason to have the Extreme issue an IP address, and they can keep the same one forever.
The Microcell may be able to connect to the Express's LAN port such devices that have to handle voice or other real time audio or video streaming are generally best installed using a strictly wired connection. The same applies to the Sony TV and AppleTV. Keep them on a wired LAN served by the Extreme, avoiding any reliance on a wireless link if at all possible.
The way to implement a complex network like yours is to add one device at a time. Ensure it connects reliably, then add another. You have a lot of work to do.
WDS can be implemented even with new Extremes but its performance is likely to be so unacceptable that it would be nothing more than an exercise in frustration for you.

  • How many windows server 2014 , datacenter needed for setting three pysical servers

I have three new rack server ,each with two processor , each processor has 8 cores.
the question:- how many WinSvrDataCtr 2014R2 needed?

Technically, you would need one DC per dual processor server to run as many VMs on the three hosts as you need.
Depending on your VM workloads, running with Windows Server Standard may be a more economical way to set things up licensing wise. Check the costs for each. You get 2 VMs to install per Standard license purchased per host.
The Microsoft Licensing Advisor shows the following:
    License Only: Data Center $8,225.00
    License Only: Standard $1,179.00
Your breakeven point between the two should be fairly straightforward to figure out.

  • Configuration needed for setting revaluation of activity type rates

    Hi,
I'm not sure about the obligatory settings I should make in order to configure revaluation of activity type rates.
I know that I have to set sth in Plan version and that I have to fill the Activity Type master data in a different way than if I used them without revaluation.
Can you tell me about the settings I should make?
    Thanks and regards,
    Karol

    Hi Karol
Yes u r right u need to first set in plan version and after that its the client's discipline on transaction entry that drives this requirement.
    1)  If the transaction data is not posted correctly then activity hours will be vague and distorts the price.
    2)  You can do manual activity posting but that does solve the purpose.
    3)  Also u can correct activity hours posted for all orders in the system during month end, this also is a huge activity depending on the number of orders
    4)  Now if u wish to do price calculation thru system u need to decide on two aspects
One - plan ur costs for both activity dependent and activity independent
If your cost center has more than one activity being performed u need to do either cost splitting or enter equivalence numbers while doing activity planning
    5)  If u wish to hve prices calcualted by system, then during month end u need to run actual cost splitting and then do actual price calculation
    6)  Then u need to revaluate all your orders with actual activity prices
Hope the above clarifies - do assign points as a way to say thanks

  • Is there a need for setting undo_retention=0?

    Hi
If i set my undo_retention to a >0 value, oracle will try his best effort to keep the consistent image for as long as my undo retention value. So, i don;t see why is there a need to let oracle manage the retention for me by setting to 0.
    Thanks
    Rgds
    Ung

    Hi,
By setting UNDO_RETENTION to 0, you enable auto tuned retention
As far as I know tuned undo retention is enabled by default. Setting the undo_retention acts as a minimal threshold.
There is a difference in the tuned undo retention value between fixed size undo tablespaces and autoextend enabled tablespaces. From the 10G Release 2 Administrator’s Guide:
    If the undo tablespace is
configured with the AUTOEXTEND option, undo retention tuning is slightly different. In
this case, the database tunes the undo retention period to be slightly longer than the
longest-running query on the system at that time.
Undo Retention Tuning and Alert Thresholds For a fixed size undo tablespace, the
database calculates the maximum undo retention period based on database statistics
and on the size of the undo tablespace. For optimal undo management, rather than
tuning based on 100% of the tablespace size, the database tunes the undo retention
period based on 85% of the tablespace size, or on the warning alert threshold
percentage for space used, whichever is lower. (The warning alert threshold defaults to
85%, but can be changed.) Therefore, if you set the warning alert threshold of the undo
tablespace below 85%, this may reduce the tuned length of the undo retention period.

  • Need help setting up WRT54G as wireless bridge/repeater

I currently use a WRT54GS as a wireless router.  It is located downstairs and can't be moved.  I have a few devices upstairs that can't connect to the router because of a weak signal.  I can not run a cable upstairs and have a second WRT54G router that I'd like to use as a wireless access point.  Can I configure it to work as a wireless bridge or repeater?  If so, will the 4 LAN ports work in addition to the wireless ones?

No.  You cannot connect the two routers wirelessly, at least not with Linksys firmware.  Perhaps there is third party firmware that will convert the WRT54G to a wireless bridge, but this will void your Linksys warranty.
Another option is to add high gain antennas, such as the Linksys HGA7T, to your WRT54GS.   Also, try to align the router and wireless adapter antennas so that they are parallel to each other, but perpendicular to the line between them  -  this should maximize your signal.

  • Instructions needed for importing a RoboHelp - Oracle Help file

Please provide instructions for importing a RoboHelp, Oracle Help file into an Oracle 8 software application.
    Thank you,
    Jennifer Byrne

The Oracle Help Guide documents how to program applications to support Oracle Help. Have you looked at it? The Guide is included with the downloads of Oracle Help for Java (OHJ) and Oracle Help for the Web (OHW) and you can also find it directly on OTN at http://otn.oracle.com/docs/tech/java/help/content.html.
But I'm not sure I understand your question completely. What do you mean by "import" the help into the application? I assume you are referring to programming the application to integrate the help into it; hence my suggestion to refer to the Oracle Help Guide, above. But perhaps I'm missing something. Also, what kind of application do you have? Is it a Java application?

My client is asking for me to create a script that can execute from Photoshop without showing the AE UI at all. For those that have created headless workflows, what tips and tricks can you recommend?
When running a script with noui, how can you tell when it's done, especially if there is a render involved?

    hi all,
I actually have similar questions as well. We have a Java process that will kick off AfterEffect thru the command line "afterfx.com -noui -r myscript.jsx" to perform a render job. This method runs perfectly fine when someone actually login on the window's machine and kick off the java process.
However the whole thing runs to a crawl when we started configure the java process to run as a windows service (under the same user that we would use to normally kick off the process interactively thru live login). I can see from the task manager after effect did tries to spawn multiple processes to do the render job that was feed to it thru the myscript.jsx. But those child process would die almost instantly and then AfterEffect process would sit idle for like a minute or two before slowly perform the rendering single threaded.
Anyone here tried and successfully kick off the aftereffect process from a windows' service?
    Thanks,
    Joseph
