Instrument feedback squeal in Logic 8

Hi all, I generally record int a Mac Mini/Mbox2 with Rockit monitors. I'll often move files over to my Macbook for mixing/editing as I travel a good deal.
Lately though the guitar tracks of a couple of files have been swamped by intense microphone/instrument squeal. Anyone have suggestions for how to get rid f that, and avoid in the future? Thanks,

Playback, exs24 or ultrabeat can do this.
I've had trouble with ultrabeat in MS1. Sometimes a long sample would stop playing. Whoops.

  • Loud feedback squeal during phone calls on iPhone 5 in life proof case, has anyone else had this issue?

I have had my IPhone 5 for one week and just installed it in a life proof case. After installing it in the case I started getting a loud feedback squeal while talking on the phone. There was no squeal when the phone was not in the case so I suspect the case is causing the reaction. I work in construction so this case is a must to keep the phone safe. Has anyone else had this issue or is there a solution so that my phone can remain in the case?

I have the same problem, guess i'll try it without the case and see.

  • Loaded Instruments Too Quiet in Logic Pro X

    Hi,
    Firstly here is my setup:
    Mac
    iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2012
    3.1GHz Intel Core i7
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB
    OS X 10.9.4
    Logic
    Logic Pro X
    Version 10.0.7
I use Logic with Kontakt and PLAY for loading different sample libraries.
    PLAY version 4.1.8
    Kontakt version 5.3.1.37
(As far as I know; all of this is as up to date as it can be as of the time of writing)
    Now the problem:
Very simply put, instruments seem to be loading from either Kontakt or PLAY at low volumes, when they never have before. The reason I have asked this question in a Logic forum is because I have started to notice Logic only instruments doing the same thing. For example, the default software instrument: Classic Electric Piano, nearly always loads quietly. I have to select another instrument, then go back to the Classic Electric Piano for it to load at the correct volume.
Now to expand on this issue, I notice that the levels of the track indicated in Logic are still at a reasonable volume - and supposedly as high/loud as other instruments. But when I play notes on the quieter track the output volume through my iMac's builtin speakers is extremely low. In order to counteract this, I have been turning up the volume for these quiet tracks in the mix, as well as adding compression to increase the volume - but the downside of this is that the overall quality of the instrument is lost because it also turns up all the other things in the track (i.e. natural reverb, feedback and fuzziness) that would normally be unheard when the instrument plays at the correct volume.
I hope I have explained this well enough. It is hard to describe what happens without you actually hearing the difference. I do not really know what has caused this to happen - is it Logic? PLAY? Kontakt? Or even my builtin speakers? Do I need some external ones? - and it seems to have started quite randomly. It also seems to randomly happen on any instrument in either Logic, PLAY or Kontakt.
Hopefully someone will have some idea of what I can do to fix this problem and return my instrument's to their default output volume without the need for compression.
    Thanks,
    and with kind regards,
    Charles

I haven't used Logic  X yet, but previously there was a preference regarding whether a new track would load the default Electric Piano.
So the way you're describing it, turning that off would fix your problem?  Although I don't know why it's so quiet and perking up after switching instruments.
I have noticed that when I load evp88 (is that what it's called?) into a blank audio inst track, it's really low.  I just assumed that how it was.
If things are buggier than this, you can always check 6. 7. and 8. of the Apple Support Logic troubleshooting list:

  • Real Instruments Feedback Garageband 08

I bought ilife 08. I usually use Protools to record with my Mbox but I wanted to screw around with Garageband. I can not for the life of me get real instruments to work. When it records all i get is a feedback loop from the moment I hit the record button... instrument plugged in or not.
But let me back up a bit. I was messing around with Garageband loops and they were all distorted. I wanted to monitor through my Mbox so I checked Preferences in Garageband and also in the OS and sure enough one of them was set to line output or something. Switched that and loops and software instruments worked fine. No distortion.
So all input output prefs are set to use the Mbox. I open Garageband.. choose real instruments. Plug my ukulele into source 1 on my Mbox and select instrument. I can hear it monitoring through my headphones but I hit record the wave file shows straight feedback. I stop recording and go back and listen to it. Just feedback.
I mess around with the input controls again. It will record fine if i use the built in microphone. I decide maybe it is the pick up in the Uke. Try plugging in my guitar. Same thing. Decide to use my Neuman microphone. Select mic... turn on phantom power. Same thing. Feedback.
I thought.. maybe my Mbox is messed up. I go to open Protools now and it won't even open. I'm assuming it didn't like something Garageband installed... and now i can't find my Protools install disk. Grrrr.
Maybe i need a driver update for the Mbox? I don't even know where to begin with that one... I did a google search and found I could check settings in the Digi Core Audio Manager and now it pops up every time I open Garageband regardless of setting it not to in the prefs... But that is another story. Also messing with that did not help.
What in the world am I doing wrong? I feel like there is probably something really simple i am overlooking. I am going to take my Mbox to my friends place tomorrow and plug it into his Mac and see how it goes. In the meantime is there anything obvious I am overlooking? I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to techy stuff but this is making me feel like a real idiot.
I appreciate any assistance. Please be kind if the answer is obvious and I am just a dumb-dumb. I have a fragile ego. haha.

    Hi!
    Start with this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93725
Is it maybe because your Mbox have sample rate set other than 44.1 khz? If so, bring it back to 44.1 khz.
Also, GB set a real instrument track enable to record automatically everytime you open GB. Why? Have no idea!? If that track been leave with monitor to "on", and the original source of recording is different than the one use when the track have been set up, like for exemple, your Mbox is closed, GB automatically set the default audio source as the builtin microphone, if there is one. Imagine if the input level is at its max, feedback occur!
Is it possible GB don't use your Mbox as audio input, and set builtin microphone instead, which is really really sensible? Or have you forget to check in the track infos and forgot to choose you Mbox as audio input for a particular track? Instead, builtin microphone is use by GB by default and the feedback occur? Btw, you have to do it everytime you create a new real instrument track, to verify if everything is ok before recording new stuff on the new track.
With my FA-101 Edirol, when I change the sample rate while GB is open, I have to restart the audio interface. If not, GB recordings sounds incorrect. In those cases, I prefer restart everything, GB and audio interface all together. That way, I'm sure everything is ok before trying a new recording.

  • How do you get a MultiTimbrel Instrument Set Up In Logic?

    Hi...
First of all I'd like to say (since this a basic question...) I did read up on it first.  However, I'm still not convinced it functioning as it should.
What I have is MOTU's MachFive2 opened as a multi-timbral instrument in Logic Pro.  However, it still doesn't seem to function the proper way...  If I load samples into the various MIDI Channel slots and have the Channels for each track set to the corresponding MIDI Channel number...  Something Just isn't quite right.  Not sure why but I don't think I'm setting up the instrument properly in logic.  I already tried talking to MOTU's forum but they were pretty sure it was more related to logic.
In Motu's MachFive2 Sampler I have the ability to setup 16 channels in several different banks giving me the ability to run one Plug-In which supports layering, multi channels and various other MIDI related capabilities.
Can someone quickly run me through the steps to make sure I am setting up the MachFive2 plug-in sampler correctly?
    It would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!!

    Hi
    Step 1
Create a New Software Instrument channel using the New Tracks button. Select the Multi-Timbral check box and choose how many MIDI channels/Parts you wish.
    Step 2
Load up your Instrument in the I/O slot and load in all the necessary sounds. Check that all are assigned internally to the correct MIDI channels (and possibly audio outputs)
    Step 3
Select the appropriate track in Logic.
You should be good to go?

  • Can't get Synthogy Ivory or Vienna Instruments to work in Logic Pro 9.

I am using a Macbook Pro, 4 gig ram 2.5 gig Intel Core 2 Duo.
Latest versions of Synthogy Ivory, Logic Pro 9, and Vienna.
The two software instruments work fine as standalones. In Logic, they both show up in the Audio Units Manager list, shown as validated, with a check in the Logic box but no check in the Node box.
They do not show up in the instruments library and can't be accessed (by me anyway) from the channel strips.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
    Paul

    Hey Paul,
Launch Logic in 32-bit if you are running it in 64-bit, (Get Info on Logic Pro and choose 'Open in 32bit Mode") and open the Audio Units manager within Logic, make sure Ivory and Vienna are checked, and re-scan the audio units.
    Then restart Logic in 64-bit.
Ivory and Vienna should now be available via the 32-bit audio unit bridge.

  • IPad air 2 Feedback squeal

I Have a feedback like squeal coming from the speaker. Happened a few times and I took it in and they reinstalled the firmware. yesterday I had a random pop sound, today I got the squeal twice within minutes. It's totally random and happens when I'm switching between apps. Usually between a game and FB or mail. I keep the sound turned way down, maybe two bars.
anybody else have this problem? First time I took it in, I was two days past return and they wouldn't take it back. Never had this issue with my previous iPad or other iPhones.
    THanks.

  • 3rd party software Instruments and pluggins for logic ???

I know logic has lots of software instruments and pluggins. What would be some good 3rd party instruments and pluggins to enhance the working and creative vibe? I know Spectrasonics has some good ones !!!!!!
    RD

    Rodney,
I think it really depends on what type of music you do.... But as you already mentioned, Spectrosonics stuff would certainly be at the top of my list.
RMX is practically a must have, as far as I'm concerned, and if you have Recycle, it IS a must have. Same with Atmosphere... I couldn't work without either one now.
Trilogy is really good to, but I wouldn't say it's a "must have". Still, it gets used a lot here.
I really like Arturia's synths as well, but customer service there has a lot to be desired. But the Vintage pack will certainly cover a lot of analog ground, and the Mini Moog is simply amazing.
There are a lot of sample libraries available in Native EXS format, but EXS reads Giga and Akai libraries as well, and if you got something like CD Xtract, you could translate even more formats.
Native Instruments makes some nice stuff as well.
As far as plug-ins, my absolute favorite are the UAD-1 plug-ins. But that requires the PCI card. Best money I ever spent though, hands down.
Here are a few other companies that make excellent plug-ins as well:

  • Provide Feedback for the Logic Pro User Manual and Onscreen Help Here

The Apple documentation team for Logic Pro would like to know what you think about the Logic Pro Help documentation (available in the Help menu):
    • How often do you use Logic Pro Help? Under what circumstances do you use it most?
    • Do you use the printed manual or the onscreen help more? Which one do you prefer?
    • How do you find what you're looking for in Logic Help: table of contents, index, skimming, PDF links, PDF search?
    • What do you like about the Logic help?
    • What would you like to see us improve? What is missing?
    • What needs more in-depths coverage in the Logic help?
    • In learning Logic, did you use the Logic Getting Started Guide? If so, do you feel the book provided a good introduction to the application? Is there anything you can think of that would make the Getting Started Guide more helpful to you? Did you use the tutorial song that accompanies the Getting Started guide?
    • What are the most important concepts/features a new user has to understand to get started with Logic?
    • By what method do you ususally learn a new application? For example: provided manuals, third-pary tutorials or books, training classes?
    • Are there any particular examples of manuals or online help that you consider to be good models for the Logic Pro manual and onscreen help?
    • What do you think is the most difficult feature/concept to grasp in Logic Pro?
    • What's the most frustrating experience you've had with the Logic Pro documentation?
    • Are there any other methods of delivery or media you think we should explore?
    • What size of computer display do you typically use to view the onscreen help? For example: 12, 15, 17, 20, 23, or 30-inch?
    • What resolution is the computer display set to when viewing Onscreen Help? For example: 1024 x 768, 1280 x 854, or 1920 x 1200 pixels?
    • Do you use multiple computer displays?

    • How often do you use Logic Pro Help? Under what
circumstances do you use it most?
I use it often. not everyday, but there is always some little command or procedure that you can't remember
    • Do you use the printed manual or the onscreen help
more? Which one do you prefer?
I use them both, but the onscreen help a little more often. Some times I like to walk away from the computer and sit on the couch and read the manual, just to have a change of scenery
    • How do you find what you're looking for in Logic
Help: table of contents, index, skimming, PDF links,
    PDF search?
    Table of contents and search
    • What do you like about the Logic help?
It's right there on the computer, and being able to search by key words
    • What would you like to see us improve? What is
    missing?
I think real time animation would be real cool but I doubt that is practical
    • What needs more in-depths coverage in the Logic
    help?
Things that Logic has and you won't find in other programs, like explaining the environment in more detail. how to make better use of transformers. The Transform window could be explained more clearly.
    • In learning Logic, did you use the Logic Getting
Started Guide? If so, do you feel the book provided a
good introduction to the application? Is there
anything you can think of that would make the Getting
Started Guide more helpful to you? Did you use the
tutorial song that accompanies the Getting Started
    guide?
I didn't use it, although it looks great, I went right into the reference manual. I did look at the tutorial song, which was nice cause it gave me some hands on experience with moving things around
    • What are the most important concepts/features a new
user has to understand to get started with Logic?
Logic is different that other DAW's. Logic's way of doing things may seem real strange to someone who came from using another program. as I said before, spend more time on things that are only found in Logic, like the environment. It really frightens some people.
Many of the questions here in this forum are midi related. people seem to be having a real hard time making midi work in Logic. The manual could be more detailed in explaining midi communication and how the environment is the heart of all of this
    • By what method do you usually learn a new
    application? For example: provided manuals,
third-pary tutorials or books, training classes?
Provided manuals and a lot of trial and error. Also forums such as this are a great asset
    • Are there any particular examples of manuals or
online help that you consider to be good models for
the Logic Pro manual and onscreen help?
No, logic's manual is as good as most others.
    • What do you think is the most difficult
feature/concept to grasp in Logic Pro?
For me it was the transform window, it took me a while to get the hang of it. none of the other programs I worked in had anything quite like it.
    • What's the most frustrating experience you've had
    with the Logic Pro documentation?
there are a few errors, so it is frustrating when you are following the manual but not achieving your goal. For example, page 112 says:
There are two possible locations for user icons:
The ~/Library/Application Support/Logic/Logic Resources/Icons folder can contain icons which are only valid for the particular user (~ is the user name). If you save your icons in the root directory—/Library/Application Support/Logic/Logic Resources/Icons—the icons are valid for all users. If icons with identical numbers exist in both folders, the icons found in the user folder have priority.
But this is not the case, they actually go in /Library/Application Support/Logic/images/Icons
there was a couple other mistakes like this too, but i can't remember right now
    • Are there any other methods of delivery or media
    you think we should explore?
If you wanted to get into doing video tutorial, that would be cool. there is a web site called atomic learning http://www.atomiclearning.com/ they have quicktime video tutorials for a ton of different software applications, some apple, and for a flat fee of 79.99 for a year you can spend as much time as you like learning all of the software applications. I may sign up to learn Web design, and maybe final cut pro. Apple could do something like that for all of the apple software and do it much better I would think, and you guys would make a fortune. well I guess not compared to the fortune you are already making
    • What size of computer display do you typically use
to view the onscreen help? For example: 12, 15, 17,
    20, 23, or 30-inch?
    20 in cinema display
    • What resolution is the computer display set to when
    viewing Onscreen Help? For example: 1024 x 768, 1280
    x 854, or 1920 x 1200 pixels?
    1344 X 840
    • Do you use multiple computer displays?
    no, just the one

  • How do I set up an instrument in Logic that can control various perimeters at a time?

    Hey guys,
I want to make a composition, using the guidelines from an amazing John Cage composition called 'Variations II'. The guidelines involve measuring out a set of lines and dots, the measurements each relating to a sound's frequency, amplitude, timbre, duration, structue, and point of occurence within a piece of music.
So, I want to create an instrument in logic that will allow me to control a sound's; frequency (pitch), amplitude (volume), timbre (tonal colour/quality), duration, structure (how many notes within each section of music), and point of occurence within the piece (when it is played). I know this is an epic ask! But I also know it can be done.
Someone else has done it in Native Instruments.
    https://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=userlibrary&L=1&type=0&ulbr=1&pl view=detail&patchid=5281
Any advice on how to get this going?
    Thanks so much!

The example you gave was done with Reaktor, one of it's features is a type of instrument construction kit. Logic does not have tools to "Create" instruments. It does have built in instruments which have control over frequency/pitch, amplitude/volume, timbre/color, duration,..etc.
Logic is more like a recording studio in a box, with an included set of instruments.
Do you use Logic? Are you familiar with creating music in Logic, sequencing, using a MIDI Keyboard controller?

  • Logic X - Exs24 missing "legacy instruments" folder

    HI,
I'm missing the Legacy Instruments folder in my EXS24. It's not in the sampler, and it's not in the file system (/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments). There _should_ be a folder there called "12 Legacy Instruments", but it doesn't exist.
I've found a few other threads on this and tried:
    repairing permissions.
    REindexing Spotlight
re-downloading Legacy and Compatibility from Download Additional Content
    Suggestions please?
    Thanks!
    logic 10.0.7
    Mac 10.9.4

OK, I figured out that this Legacy content is on the Logic 9 install disks. Here's how I solved it. I used Pacifist, which was mentioned in some other threads, but not really explained. I was also unsure whether this was a Logic 9 legacy issue, or something from way back in Logic 7 or 8. Hopefully this will help someone....
    1. Download and install Pacifist from Charlessoft
    2. Get all your Logic 9 disks ready, and open the Logic Studio Install disk in Pacifist. (You will need to insert all the Logic disks to open the complete package.)
    3. in Pacifist, search "legacy". In mine, this gave 5 results: Legacy Bass Guitar, 10 Legacy Instruments, 04 Logic Legacy Kits, 12 Legacy Instruments, and 06 Legacy Spaces. The Pacifist browser window shows the file path.
    4. In the Pacifist browser, right-click (or control-click) on the folder, and choose "Extract to Custom Location...", and extract to the corresponding location on your hard drive:
    /Library/Application Support/Logic/Channel Strip Settings/Track/04 Bass Guitar/Legacy Bass Guitar/
    /Library/Application Support/Logic/EXS Factory Samples/10 Legacy Instruments/
    /Library/Application Support/Logic/Plug-In Settings/Ultrabeat/04 Logic Legacy Kits/
    /Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments/12 Legacy Instruments/
    /Library/Audio/Impulse Responses/Apple/06 Legacy Spaces
That should be all you need to add the Legacy content, without doing a full install. They are all just presets, except the EXS stuff, which is presets and samples — so if you want that you need to add both the EXS Factory Samples/10 Legacy Instruments AND the Sampler Instruments/12 Legacy Instruments. Otherwise they can be added modularly.

  • Are Logic's instruments and effects Audio Units yet?

I quote from the logic manual: +"Audio Units is the standard Mac OS X format for real time plug-ins. It can be used for audio effects, software instruments, and Generators. The Audio Unit format is incorporated into the operating system, and installed Audio Unit plug-ins can be simultaneously accessed by all applicable programs. Logic Pro supports all Audio Unit format plug-ins."+
If this is the case, it seems odd to me that the "audio effects, software instruments and Generators" that come with Logic are not Audio Units (or weren't in Logic versions < 8).
"Why do I care?" you might ask? Well, mainly because I'm interested in using different Audio Unit hosts -- specifically, I'm playing with "live coding" (see www.toplap.org), and the instruments and effects in Logic would be wonderful to be able to live-code to.
I just scanned through the manual (it's nice that it's posted), but it mainly focuses on the Audio Unit host features of Logic, and doesn't mention the components.
Can anyone answer whether this decision has been changed yet?
    thanks!
    dylan

You're confusing an API with a set of Plug-ins. Yes, Logic's plug-ins are all AU's. They all conform to the AU specs. However, they are exclusive to Logic. To believe that the plug-ins will ever be available outside of Logic is more folly than anything else. It would go the same for any DAW. Logic is no exception to the rule.

  • Solo instruments in Logic Express (strings, horns)

    Hello,
I have imported an audio track (mixdown of bass, drums, piano) into Logic Express. I would now like to make a string quartet arrangement over the track: solo violin, viola, cello. (Same for trumpet, trombone, saxes.) One track for each instrument. I can't find workable solo instruments in Logic.
I will be recording the actual parts with real instruments and don't need high-quality samples, so Garritan is probably way more than I need. This is strictly for arranging. As I understand, the available Jam Packs do not include solo strings.
Are there basic MIDI files on a Mac that could be used for this? Or some kind of plug-in? Alternatively, I do have Finale (2004 version, but I can upgrade). Will Finale parts work somehow with Logic Express?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Thanks for your reply to my question about solo instrument MIDI tracks in Logic. Pop Strings in the EXS24 is what I have been using, and while there is a solo cello there, I don't see any solo violin options, pizz or arco. There's definitely no viola option. My workaround for now is to have four solo cello tracks, with the top two cello tracks serving as violin parts, the third as viola, and the fourth as cello. Seems kind of silly, but at least they are solo instrument tracks. The ensemble samples are useless for writing parts for actual instruments.
I'll try exporting a Finale arrangement as MIDI files, importing those into Logic Express, and see if that's better.
