Instrument samples / pitch

Hi, new member here, new to both mac and garage band, so all help greatly appreciated!
1. How can I install more instrument samples (eg. more bass guitars than are on the standard installation); do I have to buy a "jam pack" and if so which one do you recommend.
2. Is it possible to have more than a one octave range for pitch changes if so how? (C sounds unrealistically low for the bass line).
Cheers........Brian

the jam packs of lots of instruments, but which one you buy depends a lot of the styles in which you're interested. you can see an overview here:

as well as some PDFs from them:

  • How to convert mp3 software instrument samples to format garageband can use

    Hi and thanks in advance.
I'm using GB '08 on OSX 10.4.11 w/ a G4 MDD. ( Sorry folks,  This is the setup that I have and cannot buy a new computer or software at this time)
I'm pretty new too DAW and all of this but want to compose music with traditional orchestra sounds as well as what GB offers.
I have found Muse Score and I can get some pretty good results for writing but I want to expand the software instrument voices that GB has.
    I found  http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/thesoundexchange/make_music/samples/library/
and they have some pretty good sounding software instruments for free, except that they are in mp3 format.
I did some reading and see that GB understands a different format for this. I put some of the sounds into the correct GB folder as a test and result is of course no go. I see that GB uses exs and cst files in addition to wav and aff files.
How do I convert mp3 software instrument samples to the formats garageband can use? Is there a way? What would I need to do this?
    Thanks again..

The first step would probably be to convert the samples into AIFF files, that's what GB's sample files are in.
But so far that's only a collection of samples - what you need is a sampler file that tells the software which sample to trigger with which key (the .exs files in GB's instrument library).
Since your software is old, t works pretty well with soundfonts (the latest versions have problems), so you might try this software to create them:
    http://sonicamigos.com/polyphontics/

P.S.: The softare costs $60, but you can create 10 instruments for free.

  • Re-Linking EXS Sampler Instruments & Samples

1 - Curious what you think of this concept:
I have an external drive that I'd like to be able to move to several computers and use as my samples drive. To keep things consistent, I thought it best to keep BOTH EXS Sampler Instruments & Samples on this drive. Then I can just create aliases of the EXS Sampler Instruments and drop them in the main logic support folder. That way I can easily just move the drive to either computer for the greatest flexibility.
Is this ok to do? Is there a better way?
2 - I'd like to re-link many EXS Sampler Instruments to their samples. I used to use the ExsManager Pro.app but that stopped working a while back. Is there another way to have logic do all the re-linking instead?

I highly suggest that you contact Redmatica and get an update to get it working again.

  • Unable to find/view garageband instrument sampler files

    Hello,
My goal is to import my garageband drum kits into idrum.
This would be easy except I can't locate the instrument sample files on my HD.
I have looked in the directory Library/applicationsupport/garageband/sampler files (where I have been told they should be), as well as I've performed a search for AIFF files for specified drum kits - to no avail.
    Does garageband disable this function?
The folders show that there is nothing inside them, yet all of the instrument and jampack instruments work within garageband.
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance

  • Looking for quality, hard to find instrument samples

    Hello,
I'm a traditional (acoutic) Korean drummer/musician looking at going going electric (both for composing and later performing these virtual instruments on stage).
I would like samples of Korean instruments in my computer to trigger and/or make loops.
I can try making samples by recording my instruments on my own, but I'm willing to pay for quality rather than make them on my own. Also I don't have all the instruments I would like.
Can you tell me where there might be even the possibility of quality Korean instrument samples?
Thank you in advance for you help.

just visited your website, looks like you have a great group going there.
actually looking at the photos on your site made me think, you'd be best off getting in there and sampling the instruments yourself.
you'll probably find a bunch of stuff out there to buy.. but I think it would be a shame if you just hobbled together a bunch of more or less generic asian percussion samples just because that's all you could find. if you're an expert in these instruments and in the musical tradition of it all, you're in a really great position to really understand the dynamics of the sounds they make and how best to capture it all, so that you get similar playability from your sample set.
I'd start off by doing some test runs and experimenting. record some of the instruments you do have and that you play yourself. get your hands on the best stereo mics you can find, a nice room to do it in, and a nice preamp/converter.
once you've tracked a whole bunch of hits and whatever else you can produce with an instrument, spend some time editing it all up and then try out some mapping in the EXS24 to see how it plays. you'll quickly find out what works best. then once it's all working out for you and you've got a technique down, you could set up a day in a studio and get as many players and instruments in as you can. record the bejeezus out of them, knowing that you can then go and edit and keymap it all later.
it can be a lot of work, but there's nothing quite like roll-your-own sampled instruments, especially when you are someone that really understands what a particular instrument is capable of in terms of range of sound. you'll really be able to get in there and capture so much more of the nuances that these instruments can produce than someone that just stuck a mic in front of something they didn't understand and hit it with a stick. and then with your multisamples and velocity layering, you'll be able to tweak it so much better to play authentically cos you know what to listen for.
also consider this. if you have a clear focus on what kind of positive contribution doing this work could have to the music and performances of your group, you might be able to apply for a community arts grant in order to really do a good job of this. you could afford to get into a nice sounding studio with good choice of mics and an engineer to help it go well, as well as some budget to bring in players to capture the unique sound of their instruments. community arts bodies can be quite positive about funding this sort of thing, when it involves archiving traditional art and culture within your community, and also contributes to the continued development of more creative work at the same time. food for thought anyway.

  • No library files - no instrument samples, loops?

Hi! I've had an Mac OS X for quite some time now, and i recently found out that I haven't got any loop files or instrument samples in Garageband. I've tried Garageband on a friends Macbook, and it had everything.
I have got a lot of effects (like the jingles and such), but there isn't any loops.
Can anyone help me to get these files? I've heard a lot about someone having problems with an file error, but I'm not having that problem. There's simply just nothing in the folder containing the files.

I've been all the way into the Garageband folder in Application Support. There isn't anything.
That's not where the loops are stored. But anyway, you should probably just re-install GB.

  • Audio / Software instruments - slight pitch mismatch ?

Each time I tune let's say an analogue (audio) instrument to a sampled Grand or any other software inst for that matter, what was in perfect pitch PRIOR to recording, upon playback seems slightly out of tune. As an example: meticulously tune an acoustic guitar to the Sampled Grand of EXPS24. Lay down the acoustic guitar track. Go back to the sampled grand - the very same one I just tuned to - and it is slightly off pitch. I have checked:
    Sample rates match - ok
    Song preferences - Software Instruments - A440 - ok , not detuned.
    Master Keyboard not detuned.
    No tempo changes.
This seems to happen on all songs, all instruments.
    Out of guesses - anyone ? Using Logic 7.11, Motu 828 G5 2 Gig

Checked with your microtuning settings? Logic will report microtunings to plugins-plugins are made to respond to these events. The guitar is fixed at equal temperment-100cents per semitone for each note and octave (assuming it is manufactured and designed well).
Is the sampleset recorded in stretch tuning-is there an option to dis/enable it? Many pianos are uned to stretch tuning-this sounds a bit better to most people as a solo instrument (but can wreak havoc if integrated with equal tempered instruments), basically each octave is more than 1200 cents apart with stretch.
Are you tuning with your ear or a tuner? Your ear will often decieve you from equal temperment because a 'real' perfect fifth isn't exactly 700 cents. Set everything to equal temperment/no stretch tuning. use a tuner to tune. Intonate your guitar-run the piano through the tuner as well.

  • Installing third party instrument samples

I just purchased and installed Vienna Instrument's Special Edition. Nothing tells me how to import the samples into Logic Pro's tracks, and Logic Pro isn't any help either - it says refer the VI manual (and adds the helpful comment that if third party samples are properly installed, they will work just fine).
I went through the installer tutorials, including mapping to the folders that hold the VI instruments. I also watched the basic online tutorial on how to use the VI Instruments Standalone (which is no help because I'm trying to import these sounds into Logic, and neither Logic nor the VI manual give you ANY indication how these two pieces of software have any relationship to each other.)
Classic example of manuals being written from the world view of the informed, instead of thinking what somebody without any background in this would need to know (i.e. the people who actually need the manuals). It's like trying to find the interstate entrance in New England - "If you don't know how to get there, you don't belong there."
I'm also experiencing all kinds of crackling and latency, having simply installed the samples, without having plugged any of them in to a Logic Pro track - seems like I'm scraping the bottom of my memory without having done ANYTHING yet. (Macbook Pro 1.86 GHz, 2GB DD2 Ram).

    Yes,
I am able to open VI's stand alone software and hear the samples. I have no idea what the "AU Manager" is and nothing in the Logic Pro manuals give any indication of such a thing (continously curious to me how all these manuals are written for those who don't need them). Can you tell me how to find and run this AU Manager that seems critcial to getting started, since Logic Pro and VI apparently don't seem to think it's necessary to mention it (and yet they tell you to read the manuals cover to cover...)?
Yes, the Vienna Instruments component is in it's correct folder.
And yes, I've restarted the computer and all the software a dozen times.
Yes - the syncrosoft license is installed and operating correctly.
If you've got other ideas of why this won't work, let me know. I'm burning up a precious weekend on something that ought to be brain-dead easy to do.
I've also got the MacProvVideo DVD tutorials for Plug-ins and for EXS24 (Martin Sitter's group). What a joke. They explain all about the complex conversion of non-native instruments like AKAI, and completely ignore telling someone how to connect VSL to Logic Pro. Again, assuming it must be too easy (who do they think buys tutorials?).
Very frustrated over what should be a very simple process.
    Help??

  • Third party instruments, samples and/or effects?

    Hey All,
is it possible to add new drum samples, instruments, or effects to Garageband for Ipad? I am really happy with the program, but i feel that in time the native sample- and effect packs will start to bore me.
    best,
    Jens

If you upgrade to GarageBand 2.0.5 you can buy the Red Loops, available for a limited time this week only.

  • Using Instrument Samples w/ MIDI notation?

I'm thinking of getting Logic, but there is one critical function I would want available if I was to make this investment.
I'm primarily a composer - I work onto paper and then notate into a program as necessary to help me realize certain ideas.
Is it possible to draft up a piece in MIDI notation, then apply the sampled voices after the fact?
It frustrates me to compose through midi performances, since I often think of lines and parts that are too rhythmically complicated for me to perform on a keyboard (and are not particularly idiomatic to keyboard playing, anyhow). If this type of function was available, I would definitely consider this a worthwhile investment.

well, hehe, in fact it is possible to have logic turn articulations and dynamic markings into different articualtions played by your sampler. but it requires some trickery and a willingness to spend some time cabling things up in logics virtual studio, the environment.
what i think you mean is, will the velocity of the notes be stored as you record in step-time, then yes it will. step-time simply means the sequencer is not running as you input notes. if you are familiar with sibelius then you will know how this is done. in logic, you say what rhythm values you are going to enter, and then you enter them usually with a midi keyboard. the velocity (the loudness of the note) is entered as well.
logic is an excellent tool for creating scores very quickly. it has limitations only with the finer points of producing a score, and for the most part they can be worked around. if you are interested to know what logic is capable of doing, feel free to visit my website and look at the concert section where i have scores and audio demos of work produced by logic. it may not be your thing, but it should demonstrate to you what the program is capable of doing. the scores that have orchestral 'mock-ups' (what we call music produced by samples on a computer) were all produced from the same score that you can see printed (as pdf).

  • Where to drop EXS24 samples and corresponding instrument files?

Forgive the ultra-noobness of this question. Searching has given no answers.
I want to install third party EXS samples of trumpet sounds. I understand that the EXS instrument file has a corresponding .wav or .aiff sample file.

  • Why can't EXS find my instruments and samples?

Why can't EXS find my Instruments and Samples?
    LPX 10.0.7
I have had issues with this problem before, and have spent a few hours looking throughout the many related threads on this forum and on Logic Pro Help without finding a workable solution.  So I will jump in again and hope for someone to shed some light on this.
Here is the scenario- I have two rigs, one in my studio and another on my laptop (2.5 gh Intel core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM). I have a duplicate of my sample library on a portable drive, which I take with me when I'm using my laptop. I recently copied a Project I'm working on from the portable drive to my main system. When I open the project, I get a message telling me that certain (not all) EXS files are not found.
    Some further pertinent info:
I have not saved the EXS files with the project- the project uses a sizable template and that would be cumbersome.
All of the EXS instruments/samples in the Project are there on both my internal sample drive and the portable drive.
The aliases linking my Application support Logic folder and the sample drive are correct and in place.
This happens whether I have the portable drive mounted on my main rig or not. And whether I open the Project from the portable drive or from the copy on the internal drive.
I have reindexed the internal sample drive with Spotlight. Didn't help.
I have refreshed the Instrument menu from within EXS. Didn't seem to do anything.
    Anyone?

Hi Sig! Thank you very much for your reply. But my version is iLife 11, and it should have an iWeb and iDVD

  • Can't see my own sampler instruments or presets in 64 bit version.

If I load up 9.0.0, I can see all my own presets and sampler instruments. But they are not showing up in 9.1.
I have searched and seem to be the only one with this?
    anyone else?
    Keefy

I was using Logic 9.0.2 before I upgraded to 9.1. After installing the update it has left me with 2 versions. I now have 9.1.1. which is called Logic Pro, and I also have another Logic which was automatically created and labeled Logic 9.0.0. I have checked and it is 9.0.0. (1660.11).
The problem that I have is with the 9.1.1. not seeing my presets and sampler instruments. Not in 64bit mode or 32bit mode.
** Just managed to sort it!
All of my Sampler Instruments/Samples are on a separate drive and are aliased. It looks like the 9.1.1. version looks in the Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support for the Logic Folder with all the settings. So I have aliased all individual folders (ie Bass, Piano, Synth) as apposed to the sampler Inst folder and it works!
I take it that it no longer references to the home (user/libary/application support/Logic) for Insts & Plug in settings.
    Phew!
Okay, cheers all and back to work I go ! ! ! !

  • Sample libraries - string sections... is there something I'm missing?

Pretty much unconditionally.... well I've only used the EXS24 package that comes with logic and recently got KH emerald, but any time I write something with multiple string sections I pretty much always start out with the individual sections. Violins, viola, cello, etc.
I fine tune automation and velocity, and still find myself unsatisfied, so just to compare, I switch all of the tracks to the full string section, and I've never really had it not sound, well, better.
The frustrating part is that I cant just switch around as I please because it completely throws off the fine tuning of velocity so that it sounds awkward and choppy again.
So maybe I can see how the raw sound of just violins playing would be desireable if it were out of the context of something orchestral, but what am I missing? It just doesnt seem to blend when I use the separate section samples.

But going off of what you said regarding strings... I guess I'm just surprised at how... unimpressed I am with a lot of the KH instruments I have played around with, given what I had heard about the library. Things like obvious timbre changes on only one note of a scale not based on velocity... the oboe seems to be recorded so that it sounds extremely breathy and more like a bassoon saxophone hybrid than an oboe, and all but like 2 of the varying options tend to have very intense vibrato that sounds very uncharacteristic of any oboe I have heard within an orchestral setting. Also it's almost like sometimes the mic switches places from note to note, because the breath of a wind instrument player suddenly becomes very audible.
Yea, this is why, if you are really serious about this, and can justify the expense, you really need to own several libraries, and learn each ones strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes, amongst all the high dollar samples, that one oboe sample from your old mirage sampler still speaks in the track better than any other. And while that's a slight exaggeration, I think most here would agree with that statement.
It takes a lot of experimenting before what comes out of your speakers matches what's in your head, and truthfully, I don't think that ever totally happens. You find a compromise you can live with.
I know Kirk's stuff is among the best value for the money, but I know several folks who feel the same way you do. It's a highly subjective thing, so just because one guy gets a lot of milage out of it, doesn't mean you necessarily will.
I'd throw out VSL as an strong contender. Do check them out. No libraries offer "Demos", as far as I am aware, because of the size of the samples. But each website has many, many demo recordings, some submitted by users like you and me. So go listen to those, and see which ones "speak" to you.
    Ravich wrote:
I know they say that digitally modifying the pitch (like using one sample for a range of notes or whatever) is a bad thing, but it would seem to me that those sorts of inconsistencies are worse.
To the best of my knowledge, the "big" boys aren't doing that anymore, because hard drive size and sample length are really not much of an issue these days.
To sum this up, I remember reading a quote back in the mid 80's, when sampling was taking hold. Someone said
"A sample is the right note, played at the wrong time".
Indicating that while the pitch of the given instrument sample is the playing the right note, it wasn't performed at the point and time you are using it, or in the context that you're using it.
When you think about how true that is, it's amazing we can get useable results at all out of samples.
Just realize as good as it's gotten, it's a far cry from the real thing...
