Instruments are wonky

I've got a problem with the instruments. This applies to the software keyboards inside GarageBand as well, though I have an M-Audio 49e externally.
The instruments either don't respond, respond intermittently, or respond and then cut off (the grand piano won't sustain a note; the note may sound, but then will suddenly stop). Doesn't matter whether I'm using a software keyboard with a mouse or the M-Audio, they all respond the same way.

Adjust the touch sensitivity of the keys:
Increasing the touch sensitivity makes notes sound louder or softer depending on how hard you tap the keys.
Tap the Keyboard button , and turn Velocity on.
Pinch the two ends of the Velocity bar apart to increase the sensitivity range, or pinch them together to decrease the range.
Drag the Velocity bar up or down to move the sensitivity range. This is particularly useful after pinching the ends closer together to limit sensitivity to a narrow range.
The same goes for the drums. If you do not want touch sensitivity, turn "Velocity" off.

I Get an Error "To Access Your iTunes Library ..." And Other Things Are Wonky Too ... Can't Reset ... Internet Radio Drops ... But Things Look To Be Set Up Okay

When I use my Apple TV and try to play music from my computer I get an error: "To access your iTunes library on Apple TV, turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer using 'myname'"
On my computer n iTunes Preferences / Sharing I have the "Share my library on my local network" checked with "Share entire library" -- no password, no update play counts. I've turned it off and on again.
The Apple TV settings show we are "talking to" my WIFI -- it has my network, shows a good signal strenght, all sorts of internet addresses and IP stuff I don't understand ...
The "Internet" tab works with some of those things I'd never use -- like I see the current NHL standings.
My TV works and I get an ATV signal and those little chimes / bongs when I hit things in the menu. And when it works I get audio so the cables and TV are okay.
In the past I had trouble with the settings for my favourite Internet Radio stations (the provider changed their URL but Apple didn't update the presets for a while) but those are now resolved.
I had a crappy old G class router and week signal strenght but I have a new N class Cisco router with a strong signal.
But other things are wonky:
* I play interent radio and my station will go fine for about five minutes then stop -- the little wheel spins trying to reconnect. Sometimes it resets but more often than not it won't. I just tried again four hours later and the same thing.
* I've unplugged the ATV and plugged it back in but no noticable improvement
* I tried to do the factory reset from the ATV menu. It says it will download the latest bla bla bla and after a few minutes tells me "Apple TV can't download latest update right now, try again later" -- I've tried three times today always with the same results.
* I unhooked it from the power and HDMI and plugged it into a Micro USB cable and plugged that into my Mac -- it doesn't show up in the devices in iTunes.
* I have a bunch of photos in a folder that I use for my ATV Screen Saver. A few weeks ago I added two photos to that folder -- they don't show up in the ATV screen show but the others still do.
* When I started today I checked my iTunes and the airplay icon didn't show in the bottom right (beside the genious icon and the little thing to show or hide the sidebar). Now I noticed the Airplay icon is there. When I try to switch from playing through my computer speaakers to my Apple TV I get an error "An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the Airplay device "Apple TV"" -- the ATV shows that Airplay is on.
* I see from the ATV settings that I'm running ATV Software 4.4.3 (3323) and when I do a "Update Software" on the ATV it tells me that my software is current.
* My iTunes is 10.5.2 (11) and my OS is 10.6.8 -- both are up to date.
Yikes and double yikes!
Any ideas?

I love the idea of the ATV more than I have loved the little black box but ... famous last words ... my ATV seems to be working better these days.
A big challenge for me was too many variables at play -- new router, new ATV OS / firmware / whatever, changing internet radio presets, a less than perfect physical set up ... and a short attention span from yours truly.
Here's what I did. Somwhere in these changes things got "fixed."
* I unhooked the ATV and did a factory restore by hard wiring the ATV to my computer with a micro USB cable (no external power needed) working through iTunes (I run iTunes 10.5.2 on an iMac with OS X 10.6.8).
* after the reset I now have ATV (is that an operating system or a firmware?) 4.4.4
* then I plugged it back into my home theatre and it didn't work :-) but in slightly different ways. The settings showed that I was connected to my home network but I couln't get connected using my Apple ID and no internet radio. (it is often counterintuitive -- like why when I want my ATV to talk to my iMac over my local network am I logging in to the iTnes Store with my Apple ID? but there you go.)
* I booked with the genius bar at the Apple Store and put my ATV in my pocket. They pulled out a TV, HDMI cable, ATV power source and even the remote -- all I provided was my little black ATV. We hooked the ATV to their TV and from the Apple Store (using thier WIFI) I logged in using my Apple ID and the thing worked fine.
* so now I knew that my ATV was up to date and it worked in the Apple Store using their network so it looked like the issue was my network.
* rebooted my router and noticed that when I had upgraded to the new super dooper Cisco n router we had plugged my iMac direct to the router via ethernet cable. I unhooked the ethernet and now just run my computer WIFI using AirPort.
And ...
It works. I use my ATV exclusivly for music -- my iTunes and internet radio and AirPlay -- and now both work fine. The ATV does pick up photos from my iPhoto for the screen saver and all that other stuff -- netflix, youtube, the hockey scores, ... all seem to be there. And my son played a video off his iPod Touch using AirPlay.
I know my approach is more scattered than a proper scientific try but ...
From my experience ... reset the ATV and get it up to date; see if it will work on someone else's network; check your network set up.

How do I find out which instruments are used by software instrument loops?

This isn't so much a problem, it's just something that's been bugging me - how do I find out which instruments are used by the software instrument loops?
Usually clicking on a track will bring up the instrument name in the track info pane, but if I do this after importing a software instrument loop into my song it doesn't show anything. Any ideas?
PS I have used the search function so I apologise in advance if there's an obvious answer.

Why is Logic is saying that instruments are not found?

Logic is saying that instruments such as pop horns and several others are not found, could somebody please tell me how to fix this? I currently have Logic 9 express. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All my instruments are returning VISA Errors

I recently added the Lake Shore Model 336 Cryogenic Temperature Controller driver to the instr.lib folder under National Instruments program files. When I tried running one of the example programs that came with the driver, LabView returned:
Error -1073807346 occurred at VISA Open in Lake Shore 336.lvlib:Initialize.vi->Lake Shore 336 Write Curve.vi
Because I was working on another VI at the time I just ignored the error and planned to fix it later. That other program, which had been running a servo motor error-free for the last week, also starting giving an error:
Error -1073807343 occurred at VISA Clear
Could improper installation of the Lake Shore drivers somehow affect my other instruments? I am currently running LabView 2012 and have NI-VISA 4.6.

To recap:
The original problem was that the servo motor stopped working when the Lake Shore Temp Controller was connected and drivers installed.
The temp controller does not work as well.
You corrected the servo issue by replacing the USB cable to the servo (which uses an Arduino), but are still having issues with the temp controller.
Both devices are recognized by MAX.
Do you still get the -1073807346 error? Or is it different now? That error means "VISA: (Hex 0xBFFF000E) The given session or object reference is invalid."

My support system ensures that I don't look totally incompetent.
Proud to say that I've progressed beyond knowing just enough to be dangerous. I now know enough to know that I have no clue about anything at all.

Logic 10 at start up askes to download content. After doing so it asks again repeatedly. Midi instruments are corrupt. ???

Noticed that the SoCal midi stick clicks were replayed to another instrument. the program asked to download additional content. after doing so the program repeatedly asks to perform the same task. a continual loop after download is complete. Also notice other midi instruments being replaced. Buggy, this software be!

Downloading 'Additional Content' or the Logic Pro X app Tips
Pay particular note to the tip about using Ethernet rather than WiFi...
Also make sure you repair permissions using the Disk Utility before trying again....

Some software instruments are not working when midi controller is plugged in for logic pro x

So I have made a track and I have been using my midi controller. Some instruments work when i record on the track. But if i change to some other instrument i.e. the vintage organs, then it won't work. I have bypassed all control surfaces and it still hasn't worked.

Some of the vintage organ patches use different Midi channels.....other than Chan 1 for other registers... Example Chan 3 might be used for the pedals... and Chan 2 might be used for the lower keyboard/register of the organ...
Check your keyboard to see what Midi channel it is actually transmitting on and set it accordingly....

My impression is that the likiehood of recording failures increases significantly with those series record recordings scheduled well in advance where the timing/content of the program episode is revised in the EPG. Typically the sports channel programmes are most likely to fall into this category but other entertainment channels particularly those showing several different series of a tv show can in my experience cause issues.

Music App playlists are wonky after 7.0.6. update

After updating my iPhone to 7.0.6 I'm encountering two issues w/ Music app playlists.
1st: If I manually select (touch to play) a song the app plays the one two down from it. Example: if I have Song 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 in a playlist and touch song 3 song 5 plays.
2nd: When organizing a brand new playlist the song I drag from the bottom of the list sometimes either disappears or duplicates itself elsewhere in the playlist, i.e., I end up without the song or it shows in two places w/i the list.
Question is, is this a known bug or is something corrupted in either my Music app or copy of 7.0.6.? I'm out of town right now so I have no way of doing a backup and restore, but curious to know what the problem might be.
FWIW I've already tried shutting down and restarting the iPhone and also quitting the Music app are restarting it.

Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

Instruments are so quiet!!

I have an iPad 3rd generation and I downloaded Garageband. But I couldn't understand something.
For example sometimes the drums sound louder, sometimes they sound quieter. I didn't understand why. Is it because of how I push?
And what makes me mad is the grand piano is so quiet. I can't hear it. Help

Where are GB Instruments Stored?

I'm just trying to figure out where Garageband instruments are supposed to be stored because right now I found copies in two locations:
HD/Library/Application Support/Instrument Settings/Plug-In Settings
and
user/Library/Application Support/Instrument Settings/Plug-In Settings
Any reason why all the instrument files are in both locations? The Sampler files are also in two locations

You probably installed GB several times and gave different answers to the question whether you want to make instrument and loops available to all users (HD/...) or just to one user (user/...). Do you also have the loops in two locations (HD/Libary/Audio... and user/Library/Audio...)?
You should be fine trashing the files in the user folder if they really are identical - for example, if you ever created your own instruments, they should be there. So try taking the folder out of the user folder and see if GB still has all the loops and instruments. Then you can delete the stuff safely.

Why are software instruments so quiet ??

I have been composing with Logic's software intruments and I have found that the overall volume of the instruments are generally very low. When I go to record live instruments over them I have hard time getting the soft instr's up to the volumes of audio tracks. The meters are very low to begin with.
Why do soft instr's record at such low levels?

your question did come across as quite newbie, and it is the sort of thing that a lot of new users do ask... it's easy to misconstrue where someone is coming from on this forum especially when they don't give any details in their question that indicate any specific knowledge about the area in question.

I personally wouldn't even consider it an issue.. modern DAWs are designed to deal with input sources as variable as they come. add this to the fact that they can also generate so much extra gain when you start using piles of plug ins, typical of modern production, so having headroom to spare is not an issue.
also, some audio instruments are going to have a broader range of base levels just by their nature - the EXS24 especially. the output level of a sampler is always going to change from sound to sound depending on the personal taste (or laziness/dilligence if you want to look at it that way) of the person that built the sound.
other instruments just have arbitrary basic levels, probably set that way to allow for the ful dynamics of the instrument to be available without clipping too easily. adjust them either with their own volume control (if they have one) or just use a gain plug in. also, make sure you haven't accidentally sent midi volume or expression control data that is turning them down.

How can I re-index the instrument library?

I've got a few instruments playing just fine in GarageBand, but only as tones in Logic. I suspect that if I re-indexed the library it might solve the problem. But for the life of me I can't remember how to index the libraries in Logic.
All instruments have been installed on the operating system hard drive. I haven't moved a single thing since installation. Only a few instruments are showing up as tones - but they DO play in GarageBand.

(It's improbable, but I think Pancenter may have misread you & thinks you are in GarageBand; but perhaps I am wrong & it is I who has misunderstood. Or, more likely, he does understand that you are in Logic, & is saying that if you were to use GarageBand then you would be using mini-EXS… although if so, you had of course said the same thing yourself, earlier on.)
Anyway: I take it you mean that you are in Logic, but are selecting sounds from the 'Garageband' sub-menu.
+"There is no obvious evidence that it is being played through the EXS."+ If you look at the Track icon in the Arrange window it will tell you that this is so, & the Channel Strip to the left will have a plug-in insert marked "EXS24". So that's how you can check. Double-clicking on that plug-in is also a quick way to open your Software Instrument of choice so that you can access all the available sounds directly (& edit them if required).

Missing Instruments in Loops

I am using Soundtrack Pro in Final Cut Studio 2. The instruments are missing from my loops. It seems the other sound effects and music cues are present (although, I've never seen a list of what, precisely is supposed to be included -- anyone know?).
I have done a search of my hard drive. I've combed through the Apple Loops folder. I've searched for "piano" and "cello" -- I've done a search of .caf files (apple loops). I am pretty convinced the instruments aren't on my hard drive.
In a search of this forum, someone spoke of "indexing"; but first gave the advice to return to "setup". That is a little vague for me --(both "indexing" and "setup") -- can anyone give me some instruction on how to use "setup" to try to add the loop files that didn't seem to make it onto my harddrive, during installation of Studio 2? And then how do I "index", if necessary? Thanks much.

Afaik, there's no instruments coming with Soundtrack Pro, only SFXs and Music Beds. The instruments are coming from Garage Band and/or Logic. However, if you didn't uninstall Garage Band, you should have them on your hard drive. If you don't see any instruments in your STP search tab, it's probably because they're not indexed. To index them, go to the Search tab, in the lower-right and click on the Setup... button. A new window will open. Once there, click on the + button and navigate to that folder: Library/Audio/Apple Loops. Select the folder "Apple Loops for Garage Band". STP should then index that folder.
