Insufficient Bandwith

Hello everyone... First time poster here as well as newbie Mac user. =)
Apparently like many others, I am experiencing the "Insufficient Bandwidth" error when trying to start a video chat. Here are the details:
I was able to initiate a video chat w/ my girlfriend (Powerbook G4 12") just fine between my house and her mother's house. (Seattle, WA: Comcast)
Now she lives in an apt (Memphis, TN: RoadRunner) and we are getting the "Insufficient Bandwidth" error whenever we try to initiate a chat.
She does have a D-Link router and we have tried rebooting it as well as upgrading the firmware.
We can both initiate a chat w/ the "appleu3test02" account.
Bandwidth checks show that both of us are well within the acceptable range. (>3000kb down and >200kb up).
Both of our Powerbooks are less than 3 weeks old and we both have Mac OS X 10.4.2 installed.
Any help would be appreciated! The only reason I bought us these Macs and iSights was to video chat while she was away and now we can't even do that. =(

You're welcome, Vincent.
Your plan to have your friend test from other locations seems a good one to me.
Also, you have made a clever analysis regarding the autoresponding test sites in the Want to Test your iSight With Another Person? FAQ.
You are right that if a user can get to the "Autoresponders", they should be able to get to other testers. Have you both tried testing with other humans? If you can get with others, just not each other, you may have what Ralph John's calls the "certain buddy" problem. Try Ralph's suggestions at Can not connect to a certain Buddy. (You may have to scroll down to get to the Certain Buddy part.)
... a month ago when she was still here in Seattle, we were able to video chat using the same PowerBooks and iSights.
If you need more ideas beyond those listed above to get things working, it seems to me that you will need to trouble shoot to find the PROBLEM that is causing your current SYMPTOMS.
Because you had iChat AV working previously, you can try any applicable suggestions in the How Can I get iChat working again? FAQ
That, along with the link above and my Using iSight with iChat AV post offer the best ideas I have for tracking down your issue.

  • Insufficient bandwith for video discussion

I am getting the error message "insufficient bandwith" when starting a video with one other person.
We both have iChat AV 3
    I've got a G4 10.4.2.
I tested my bandwith speed and got:
    downstream: 965 Kbps
    upstream: 118Kbps
which is well above the minimum required for iChat.
    Can you help?

    HI Christine and Steven,
Welcome to the Apple Dicussion Pages
iChat can be capped in what Bandwidth it sees and uses in two places on the Mac.
Go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming Speed.
In the drop down slect the speed that matches you download speed. For some reason the Automatic setting does not always do it.
In iChat go the the Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit drop down and set it to NONE
IF this does not improve things then go to USers/(Your account)/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.ichat.plist and restart iChat.
IF this does not work then tell us which version of Quicktime you have ?

  • Insufficient Bandwith (Phone)

My ichat with isight works great untill I want to have a phone chat.
It is interesting that there's more then enough bandwidth to to have a video
chat but not enough for a "chat" without video.
When trying a phone chat the system times out with the Insufficient bandwidth
    story.
Have I set up something wrong. Using Verizon DSL

    Hi John,
What is the Buddy at the other end using ?
There can be problems with Audio only chats from Tiger to Panther, particularly from a G5 running Tiger.
At the moment we have not found a work around for this.
Audio chats work on the same port s as Video chats so if one works so should the other (with the possible exception listed above).
Can you give us more details ?
    Ralph

  • IChat AV: Problems one after another

Hi, I had posted in one of the other threads but know that I am not supposed to hijack, so I hope you'll bear with me if I start another one.
I have been trying to set up an iChat with my brother so that my kids can talk to his kids (and so that the cousins can see each other while doing this, of course). Neither of us has done this before, but we're both reasonably proficient around our Macs, or so we thought, so we didn't expect it to be difficult. (And eventually we want to set our folks up so our kids can all talk to them as well.)
When we tried a couple of days ago, however, we got the dreaded Error -8. Now, after my having fiddled with portforwarding, we are getting an "insufficient bandwith" message. I don't know if this is a step forward or a step back, but we are tremendously frustrated.
As I said, I started setting up PortForwarding for my router, which is a Dlink DI524. The page is at http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DI-524/
I was able to do so for the first eight ports (5060, 5190, 5220, 5222, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678). [I think I did it right, although I was not able to set up the static IP like portforward.com says to do, because when I try to enter a manual IP, I seem to lose all internet connection, no matter what I do.]
I was not, however, able to do this for the 20 port range 16384-16403: the Dlink DI524 control screen only lets you do one port at a time in the Advanced --> Virtual Server menu where portforward directs you, and because of the typo, portforward.com doesn't say what to do with the ports 16384-16403. And I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the insufficient bandwith message.
There is a way to enter a range of ports under the Advanced --> Applications menu of the dlink setup, but I would need to enter a "trigger" port to do this. Any ideas what this might be?
In any case, we both have iChat --> preferences --> video --> bandwith limit set to "none." We went to the system preferences --> quicktime --> streaming menu and tried first "Automatic" and then "1.5 Mbps" each (quitting iChat in between each time).
Here is our current error message (with addresses ***ed out), and any help, assistance, etc., would be tremendously appreciated. Sorry for the length, but I don't know which part of it is relevant, since it's all indecipherable to me. For now, we're using SightSpeed, which works well, but the picture is not great when you go to full screen, and as I understand it iChat, if we can get the **** thing to work, will be sufficiently better.

    HI Stuart,
In this one we are talking about Internation Standards and who sticks to them.
Apple has decided that iChat fits the profile of an VoIP application and therfore needs to use the International Stand for making the connection using SIP.
The standard for SIP says this has to be on port 5060 (In fact 4 ports - 5060-5063)
Now technically to be VoIP you also have to be able to contact POTS (Plain Old Telphones Systems) numbers but Apple have never done this despite setting up their own SIP server (SNATMAP)
Now take Skype for instance - this is a combo Video IM and VoiP app but DOes Not stick to the SIP protocols (At least not for the Video or Audio IM side).
Consequently it does not use the ports 5060-5063.
What this does is allow it to use ports below 1024 (Above which you have to use UPnP or NAT + an opening method).
This means you can set up your network really badly (ignorantly even) and these apps will work.
SightSpeed is just a Video IM app and is not VoIP/SIP so the above does not apply until you get to the working port bits.
I hope this adds to your knowledge and is clear enough in these terms.
By this point you should be able to create a stable network with only one DHCP server if needed and able to set the modem up for any app including allowing your Children on line with the 1000+ ports that Rainbow Six: Vegas needs for the X-Box 360 game on-line (this is the biggest I have come across)

  • K430 Bad streaming problem - help needed

    Hello everyone,
I wonder if any of you can help me or have had a similar problem.
I bought a Lenovo Ideacentre K430 Desktop PC (Intel Core i7 3770 3.4GHz Processor, 16GB RAM, 2TB HDD, DVD, LAN, WLAN, Nvidia Graphics, Windows 8)  two months ago via Amazon and on the whole have been very pleased with it.
However I have had a major problem when it comes to streaming video. For example, when watching TV programmes via BBC iPlayer it will stop after about 45 secs and say that there is insufficient bandwith.  Yet, when I run the BBC diagnostic it says the streaming speed is 3621 kbps and is sufficient.  (I have two laptops in the house and both of these stream video without any problems).  I also have the same problem when streaming video from other websites.  When using websites generally they seem to load quickly and also when downloading items it seems to do these jobs at a good speed: it is just when streaming it seems to have a problem and stops.
I have even switched the K430 desktop to an ethernet cable to see if that helps - but the problem still persists. All the other devices in the house, i.e. iPhone, Wii, laptop all stream via the wi-fi without any problems.
I'm not that technical , so any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    many thanks,
    Matt

    hi Pikemonster,
    Welcome to the Forums.
Just to verify, do you get the same issue if you stream via flash player using i.E., Chrome, or Firefox?
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/tv
Also, have you tried to adjust the video quality (i.e. medium, low, etcl)
    Regards

  • IChat AV 3.0.1 Set-Up For Netgear RP614 v2 router

I have been having constant intermittent problems with iChatAV 3.0.1 (OS 10.4.2) on my PB G4. The error I get is "Insufficient Bandwith" when I try to connect with a PC (using Trillian Pro) or MAC (using iChatAV). I have the cable modem plugged into the Netgear. I then plug a PC, X-Box, Laser printer and an Airport Extreme (configured as a remote repeater) into the Netgear. I use the Airport Extreme wirelessly with my PB G4 17" and an Airport Express in my stereo for iTunes. The Netgear was configured to have all blocking turned off, manually set IP addresses for all computers and X-Box. And the UPnP enabled along with the maximum open port settings for iChatAV (TCP & UDP @ 1024-65535) for use with AOL/Trillian programs. If anyone has the Netgear RP614 v2 router working perfectly with the iChatAV 3.0.1, please post the settings ASAP. I talked with Apple service yesterday and they illuted that they have a problem with the bandwith errors. They said they are working on it !

    HI John,
From this page http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/RP614/default.htm I can see that you must have a newer firmware then the pics show as UPnP is not on there.
Static Addreses do seem to do better in some cases.
The PC applications should be able to use UPnP but I am not sure about the X-Box.
You should not need to port forward all ports and do UPnP at the same time. I would turn off the Port Forwarding you have and use it only for the X-Box, if needed, on the ports it needs.
The error mesages and Connection Doctor details are not as good in iChat 3 as they were in iChat 2 (and those took some working out).

  • 1 to 1 connections ok but not conferencing

    Hello,
I am trying to do 3 person conferencing with ichat but i never manage to get the third person. He always get a "insufficient bandwith" message.
I opened all the ports from Apple's article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208
I i try to establish one to one connections with the same persons it works withtout any problem. Are there additional ports required for conferencing ?
We all run 10.4.3 on dual G5's and SDSL Lines (2 mbps up & down) so i can not believe the real issue is bandwith so i was wondering: do many of you manage to establish audio or video conferences outside their LAN ?
    Thanks for any help
    Laurent

    Hi Laurent,
In that case check the following:
    1) The MAc Firewall is set to have iChat ports open if ON
and the Advanced Button is not got Block All UDP Traffic set.
    2) Check each computer's System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming Tab > Connection Speed Drop down and set it match the download speed.
    3) Check iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit drop down is set ot NONE.
    4) Check ports are open in some form in the modem.
    5) Make sure there is only one DHCP server on each LAN.

  • Bluetooth Mouse movement on Mac Mini Core Duo

Bluetooth mouse movement and tracking is a bit strange. The pointer overshoots the target and 'hugs' the edge of the screen. It's not a problem with one particular mouse - two different manufacturers behave in exactly the same way. Both mice work fine on my PPC machines. Any ideas or solutions?

I use a Logitech MX900 Bluetooth mouse with my PowerBook and for the most part it works fine. There are times when it just loses the plot and behaves like yours. I don't think it is a case of insufficient bandwith as Michael suspects but more a problem with intereference. I do notice that when there is a high use of my Airport connection the erratic behaviour is more prevalent.
If you use both Airprt ans Bluetooth concurrently you might want to switch off Airport off to see if your mouse goes any better.
Either way though you will find that a wireless USB mouse to perform better under most, if not all, situations.

  • Help!!! can't audio chat..

i used to be able to audio chat but now i got this message insufficient bandwith. tried to adjust the bandwith but still not working.

    Hi,
In System Preferences (Square icon with Cogs in the Dock) > Quicktime (An Option on the third line of icons) set the Streaming tab to 1.5Mbps in the drop down there.
Restart iChat to "See" this new speed.
In your routing device set it to allow it to Respond to Pings. (the default is normally to Block them - wording may vary)

  • Bluetooth Mouse X7500 on MAC OSX

I bought an X7500 bluetooth mouse for my Mac. There is a MAC logo on the box, but I am not able to find the driver for MAC anywhere. (OSX 10.9.4).
The mouse has been paired to the lap-top, and functions very well, as it is decently sized. The left and right buttons are good, and the scroll-wheel scrolls with two speeds. I may also push the wheel to move the page around.
The scroll-wheel may be tilted left and right, and I assume that this is supposed to cause the current object moving left/right but nothing happens. I also assume that the two buttons on the top left-hand side are for back and forward. When I push one of them, it has the same action as pushing the scroll-wheel.
Is there a driver for this mouse somewhere?

  • Configuring iSight??

I bought a new Apple computer last month. I bought an iSight camera and also bought an iSight for my son living across the country. He has a iBook he bought earlier this year (new). Is there some trick to this? We are unable to connect with Video to each other (getting error/insufficient bandwith messages). I have checked the bandwidth speed for my computer online myself and with my server and it seems sufficient. I am plugged in with the firewire directly into my computer. I have DSL (no router). I read a number of articles last night and I went into System Preferences and Quicktime and set the "Stream" rate at lowest setting for DSL. I set the prefs for iSight at lowest for DSL. I have no problems with regular chatting. I see myself in my screen when I go to preview. So does he (himself). He uses a router and changed between 2 routers last night and used another from a different location this morning (his work as a computer programmer). Still no connection. I turned off the Firewall. I turned the other computer in our house. I unplugged my firwire ext. hard drive. I went into System prefs - Sharing - Firewall - hit "new" - chose "Other" - under TCP Port numbers I added 5190, 5298 - under UDP Port numbers I added 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403 - and named it "iChat AV". (I read this in an article on a website concerning iChat AV). Still nothing. I called the local Apple Store and they tried connecting with me in iChat video and we both got the same error message.. I called Apple support, they told me to call the server. I called the server, they told me to call Apple.
I cannot find another thing to try and I am not a computer expert. Why is this so difficult? Can someone tell me what to try next? Thanks. (I haven't seen my son in over a year and I am dying to get this working).

This part gets confusing for me.
There is a line from the phone jack that goes into the modem, a phone line that goes into the 2Wire, there is a line (ethernet) from the 2Wire to the modem, and ethernet line out to the computer from the 2Wire. I have PC Port (2Wire) USB adapters on the 2 computers in the bedrooms connecting through the phone lines. I don't know if I described this clearly enough, but it has worked for me for several years now. By not mentioning Router, I meant like wireless, or Airport.

  • Trouble streaming movies or catch up players

Everytime I try to stream a movie through a site, a catch up service through bbciplayer or itvplayer..... the stream is interrupted, constantly pausing or stopping all together, after originally believeing the problem to my router I had this changed to no avail, the connection is fine although sometimes the site will state "insufficient bandwith" if i then re boot the site it may play for a bit or may fix the problem all together. I have to research alot of streamed programmes for uni, this can't be a site problem as it is several different sites and it can't be an internet issue as the provider has checked the connection. The wifi will constantly say " searching for networks" and will randomly change my selected network.....i have tried clearing cache files also. any help will be greatly appreciated

    Hi Tricky,
It looks like a flag was removed from your account as part of a trial you are on. I have added it back in
You will unfortunatley need to launch the app, close it and then re-open.

  • Tweaks aren't eliminating Insufficient bandwidth

My daughter and I have not been able to video and are getting "insufficient bandwidth" error messages and Connection Doctor always says our bandwith is 49 and 50 is the minimum required, but we have checked our speeds and they are 350 or greater (upload). After one tweak, I believe after closing the firewalls, we repeatedly got messages that we had declined to videoconference but we HAD accepted. ONE SINGLE TIME we videoconferenced and audio was fine but the pictures were horribly pixelated and unrecognizable.
Since that one event we are back to "insufficient bandwidth" errors and no resolution......and most bizarre....during the attempts to video I can hear the camera taking snapshots when I,m not asking it to...(I don't even know where the snapshot button is)
We bought an iBook G4 and an iSight camera and before shipping it off to her my husband and I set it up and had both iBooks sending and receiving great audio/video, using wireless in our home with cable broadband(Time Warner). We shipped the new iBook to Texas and my daughter has highspeed via satellite dish (WildBlue).
1.My download speed ranges from 1-6 and upload is about 350 and hers is the same.
    2. Both firewalls are off
    3. Her streaming is set at 768 kbps DSL/Cable and mine is set 1 Mbps Cable (the guy who installed the dish said hers was a form of DSL which doesn't use the phone line)
    4. We do not have Viex installed on our computers
    5. We used the Quicktime 7.0.1 Reinstaller for QuickTime 7.0.4
    6. I use a DI-524 wireless router
Where do we go from here?

    hI George,
Where do we go from here?
System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab
    Set this speed to 1meg
The Satelite connection is going to be very difficult to get to work at an acceptable level.
iChat makes a bandwidth check at the start up of the application.
Satelite connections tend to start slow and get faster as the data being sent or downloaded increases. This mean the person is not flat out when iChat reads the speed.
iChat work within the speed it detected.
Attempt to fool ichat by starting it up when doing a download or Uploading to a web page or similar met with little success as it also ignores what is in use and aims to use the spare capacity which in effect does not exist with Satelite.
There is not much you can do about this except move house again or get a new daughter

  • Adobe Bridge CS5, error when creating contact sheet "There is insufficient disk space..."

I am running Bridge CS5 for the first time and I receive this error when attempting to create a contact sheet. "There is insufficient disk space to complete this operation." The image files I am using are web optimized and very small. The error even occurs when attempting one small image. I have gone back to using Bridge CS4 and it works just fine. Any help?
    Thanks!

I think I narrowed this down to having a network volume mounted with a share name of "Users".  The strange thing is even you if unmount the volume you will still have problems.  However, if you avoid mounting the volume entirely (from boot) it will be OK.
The solution, it appears, is to rename the sharepoint to something other than "Users".  This worked for us.  I'm not sure if it matters whether the server is Windows or Mac OS.  In our case the sharepoint was an AFP volume on Mac OS.
We had other errors related to Bridge such as "unable to create folder" and the path in the message appeared to be /Users/currentUser/.....  which made no sense at all.  However, if Bridge was internally trying to use /Volumes/Users (the mounted sharepoint), it would not only not find "currentUser", but it would not have permissions to create that folder either.
So, another possible solution could be to grant file creation rights on the network volume "Users".  Another not-so-great idea.
    Hope that helps someone else!
