Insufficient priviledges to access backup files ... ? Cannot migrate data

Need help. I have a WD 320 gig drive with (3) Partitions:
1. Mac OS File system
2. Mac OS File system
3. MS DOS file system
I am trying to migrate the files and dir's on this drive to another, but am unable to. History:
The drive was used as a USB/FW backup. Time machine can access and write to the Mac partitions. The drive has been backed up both via FW/USB and Airport disk. Drive is now filling up and I cannot access the backup files (dir's) to copy them: " Sorry, you do not have sufficient access priviledges..."
If I disconnect and try to migrate the files manually via FW or USB - I get a similar error. Windows is visible both online and off. What gives ? Is this a result of Airport disk ? Time Machine ? or both ?
I used to be able to migrate files on and off just fine. By only recourse will be to partition and erase it seems. Need any help ......thanks

airport disk TM backups are stored differently from backups to directly attached drives. remote backups are stored inside a sparse bundle. you can simply copy the sparse bundle to a new location. backups to directly attached drives do not use sparse bundles. they can not be migrated by hand. if you need to migrate them you'll have to clone the partition they are currently on. use CCCloner or Superduper for that.

  • Installer has insufficient priviledges to access directory...

When installing 9.0, I get all the way to the end then get an error stating
"Error 1303: The installer has insufficient priviledges to access this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Resource\Font\PFM. The installation cannot continue. Log on as an administrator or contact your system administrator."
Sounds easy enough, but I already am logged on as the administrator. This is my personal computer and I have the only user account on the system. It lists my user account as the administrator. Being the only user account on the system, it's impossible to NOT be the administrator anyway.
What am I missing? The previous version of Reader has disappeared and I cannot view any PDF files. I am using Vista as my OS on an HP Pavillion Entertainment PC (laptop).
Thanks for any suggestions you might be able to offer...
    Denise

I am having the same error on Vista and, like you, I am an administrator (it's my personal laptop).  I followed the instructions here:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/329/329117.html
...(not noticing that that solution addressed the Program Data folder, not the Program Files folder), and it didn't work, but I wonder if a similar procedure on Program Files would work.  But I don't know anything about theVista security system, so I'm a little wary of trying it.  Would appreciate any thoughts.

  • Installer has insufficient priviledges to access this directory

OMG.........I am ready to throw my PC, and IPHONE through the window. I am having issues with my ITUNES. I deleted everything possible to ITUNES and APPLE and now that I am reinstalling ITUNES, I am getting this error message.
This is the error message that I am getting:
The installer has insufficient priviledges to access this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\PictureViewer.Resources\da.lproj. The installation cannot continue. Log on as adminstrator or contact your system adminstrator.
I have one Computer - with Windows Vista and I dont know how to log into it as the adminstrator...I am lose and need some help, PLEASE!!

The installer has insufficient priviledges to access this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\PictureViewer.Resources\da.lproj. The installation cannot continue. Log on as adminstrator or contact your system adminstrator.
That one can indicate file/disk damage. So the first thing I'd try would be running a disk check on the C drive.
There's instructions in the following document. Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
[Check your hard disk for errors|http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Check-your-hard-disk-fo r-errors]
Does the disk check find/repair any damage? If so, reboot the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • The backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used

I am trying to restore files from an NT back up on a SBS 2003.   The backup was taken on this machine and trying to restore to the same.   I get this error: The backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used.
I tried copying it to a different machine with no luck.  Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Since the backup file cannot be restored on a different machine, the backup file could be corrupt. You need to use some third party recovery utilities to restore the backup file.

    B Noir --
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your taking the time to help me with this problem.  I'm doing a healing technician training class at my church, and have most of my study material on my ipod.  It cashed this weekend which hindered my preparation for my class tomorrow night.  I went to the local "Apple Store" late last night and they could get me up and running.   They suggested that I call the APL CARD line which I did today, but they gave me a nice run around seccession, and did nothing.  Then I was lead to "Google" my question, which eventually lead me to the "Apple" site.  Praise the LORD for your help and may you be richly blessed with multiplied blessings in all that you put your hands to do.  May you receive a great harvest.  As far as I'm concerned you were used by the LORD, and are the real genius!!!

  • I backed up 10.4 but cannot migrate data, need help

Hi, New here. I had a 1 on 1 training and was recommended to back up my computer (Tiger OS) which I did. I installed Leopard, but cannot migrate data back. I backed up on a USB IOmega drive. The person I spoke with at the apple store either did not know or did not remember to tell me to turn off the File Vault. Now I cannot bring back much of the data or settings I had.
Here's my question, If I reinstall Tiger, will I be able to transfer the data back from the back-up drive, and then just do an upgrade instead of a complete fresh install of Leopard?
    Thanks,
    Mike

You should be able to mount your file vault directory- the sparse image- within Leopard from your backup, and then copy the data to your new user directory.
You should be able to copy the data from your backup drive if you re-install Tiger, but since its not clear why you can't copy the data from the drive now, its not clear whether the issue preventing you from getting at it will go away after you reinstall Tiger.
I think maybe you might want to restate your problem in more detail.

    Hi,
    What operating system is the
destination server you tried to restore, Windows Server 2008 R2 or other operating systems?
According to the following link, the Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility is not fully compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2.
Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility

If this is the case, please try to restore them to a Windows Server 2003 computer and copy the data out.
If the operating system is not Windows Server 2008 R2, please try to repair the .bkf files with third party tool, such as “Repair My Backup”.

  • Windows Authentication login cannot access backup files stored in Users\[User] folder.

I am currently logged in to my database engine using SSMS and Windows Authentication; specifically, I am logged in with Joe-PC\Joe, where Joe-PC is the domain name of the machine hosting the database, and Joe is the user that created the database.
If it matters, I am running all of this locally from Joe-PC.
I have a .bak backup file stored in my C:\Users\Joe\Desktop folder that I am trying to restore.  However, I get an error saying 'Either the location does not exist, or the current login account does not have access to it.'  I am certain the location
exists, as I am looking at it right now, and I can't see why Joe-PC\Joe wouldn't have access to it's own user folder.
I am absolutely baffled as to why this is behaving this way.  I am fully aware that I can work around the issue, but I'd like to know why this isn't working as it seems like it should.  Does the Windows Authentication that SQL Server uses not have
the permissions that the account would normally have?  Is the Windows Authentication user even the same thing as the user that logs into Windows?  What else could be going on that I don't understand?

    Keith
Thanks for your answer.  My user account is one of two administrator accounts on this computer (the other is only set up for consistency sake, and has probably only been logged into a total of 5 times; all of our computers have the account though, so
I thought I should put it on here as well).  The issue isn't that my account doesn't have restore permissions, just that SSMS can't access the user folder when logged in using Windows Authentication.  Another issue that I assume is related results
in a lack of permissions on backup files until I manually set permissions to 'Everyone' under the backup file's properties\security tab.  Also, not sure if it matters, the backup is taken from a customer's computer running Win 7 Pro x86 while my computer
is on Win 7 Ultimate x64.
Not sure if this helps pinpoint the issue, but my current workaround is as follows:
Copy the .bak file to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.WSA\MSSQL\Backup (default backup folder)
Right-click the .bak file and go to the properties toolbox.  Select the Security Tab, give full permission to 'Everyone'.
In SSMS, select 'Restore Database' after right-clicking on 'Databases' in left-hand tree.
Give the DB a name, restore from device, select my file.
This method hasn't failed me yet, but any deviation (other than setting permissions before or after moving) causes me to get access errors when I try to restore.  Fortunately, this isn't a production database engine, just a testing environment, but
I'd like to get an idea of what's going on, because I know it's only a matter of time before I or a customer runs into this issue.

  • Unlock / Access BACKUP files from Time Machine????

I have a 2nd User Account for "work only".   I am preparing to do a clean install of Mavericks and the Time Machine backup files will not let me access them form my main account in the Backup folder.
They have the red circle with - sign in lower right corner.  I have CHANGED them from READ ONLY to EVERYONE, but cannot access them from main account.
I can access them from the 2nd user account, no problem...but my master account, no.  How can i unlock these files so after i do my clean install, i can access these files???
    Thanks

Well what happened was my laptop ran into 2 kernel panics within 2 days (I posted a question here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/25605663#25605663). Which sent ME into a panic. I couldn't trust myself to go any further so I went to the Apple store who then helped did an erase/install for me because they suspect it could be a software issue (maybe it was missing codes or something) and suggested that it would be best for me to drag/drop restore my stuff manually. I'm not very keen on a full system restore either because I know there are some system files which I'd rather not have sticking around (like com.rims which are super stubborn to get rid of) and which could even have been the source of my trouble right now.
I was reading through every single page of Pondini's articles and I'm couldn't find anything which said I could just restore the apps in my apps folder without transferring anything else (ie. the library folder in the macintosh hd folder) since i'm assuming anything from the library folder of the user would be obsolete if I choose not to restore those files using setup assistant. But I'm more reluctant about not using setup assistant for restoring my apps because I don't know how bad it will turn out. Not to mention I won't know if they would restore system root files that should've been long gone since I uninstalled them.

  • Accessing Backup Files On Time Machine From Another Mac

    Hi everyone,
I use 1 Time Machine on both my iMac and MacBook Air.
How can I access the Backup Files of my iMac on my MacBook Air, using the Time Machine?
I hope this is not too confusing! Thanks, everyone!

Unfortunately, what you ask is complex and difficult at best for most users.  Please take a look at this User Tip provided by forum expert Tesserax for a review of the methods that might be used to do what you ask.
AirPort Disk - Remote Access (3 Methods)
Among the methods listed, I use Method 3, so can provide a few tips on that. It does require that your Internet Service Provider (ISP)  furnish you with a a fixed or static IP address for your Internet connection....and....that you have the correct type of modem and router that would allow Port Mapping to be able to reach the data on the Time Capsule.
Most users choose the Back to My Mac Method, abbreviated as BTMM, which is supported by Apple. Depending on the nature of the network at work, you may or may not be able to access your backups at home.  Please contact Apple Support for more details on this.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • OMW cannot migrate data from MSAccess.

I am migrating MSAccess 2003 to Oracle 10g and it seems that all of the schema objects are created but there is the following error when trying to move the data.
"Unable to migrate data from source table lkpDrugs to destination table RecruitTracking_be.LKPDRUGS :
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Could not find file "(unknown)"."
The MSAcess data gets modified to connect to oracle but there is no data.
I have tried to install the Oracle ODBC Driver through the universall installer but I can't find the "projects.jar" file that I am supposed to point to in the unzip directory.
I currently have two data sources defined using "Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)" and "Microsoft ODBC for Oracle"
The other problem that I am having is that I am not sure what to enter into the feilds Username, Password and ODBC Data Source when the modiy access database screen comes up.

    Hi Terry,
I will attempt to address each of the issues that you have mentioned in your post.
    1. In reference to your "Could not find file "(unknown)"." issue, it sounds like your MS Access ODBC DSN "omwb_msaccess" isn't correctly configured.
Please refer to Chapter 4 "Troubleshooting" of the Microsoft Access Reference Guide, which can be accessed via the Help menu item on the workbench. There's a section called "Migrating Table Data Using Microsoft Access ODBC Data Source", which outlines the steps you will need to follow to set up your environment correctly. This should resolve your issue.
    2. In reference to your Oracle ODBC driver installation issue, the latest version of the driver contains a "products.xml" file and not a "products.jar" file as mentioned in its readme file. To successfully install the latest version (10.1.0.3.1) of the Oracle ODBC driver, available for download from OTN at the following location - http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/windows/odbc/index.html - you need to ensure that you are using Oracle Universal Installer v10g. Once you have downloaded the "odbc101031.exe", extract its contents to a local folder on your machine e.g c:\temp. Launch the 10g Universal Installer and select the "products.xml" file from the \ODBC101031\Disk1\stage folder you extracted. You should now be able to successfully install the driver.
    3. You mention that you are unsure what connection information to supply in the ODBC DSN. Firstly, ensure that once you have successfully installed the Oracle ODBC driver, you set up an Oracle ODBC DSN on your machine. This DSN will be the one you use in order to modify your MS Access MDB file using the workbench. Secondly, please go to Help | Microsoft Access Reference Guide on the menu bar of the workbench. Refer to Chapter 2 "Migration Process", specifically the section "ODBC Connection Issues with Linked Tables". This section gives information on what user to use.
    I hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Hilary

  • Daily backup file with the date in the filename

    Hello,
I like to backup the same file every day of the week. And add the date in the copied filename (for example "meta09-O4-04.rtf") to automate and schedule I can use cronnix. But adding the date in the filename doesn't work for me.
As you can see in the script the backup file must be copied in a directory (for example "vis")that is in the same directory as the main file.
Can some one help me on this?
    backupFileToFolder("Macintosh HD:Users:gast:Documents:meta.rtf", "Macintosh HD:Users:gast:Documents:vis:")
    on backupFileToFolder(startFile, targetFolder)
set startFile to startFile as alias
set targetFolder to targetFolder as alias
    tell application "Finder"
duplicate ("Macintosh HD:Users:gast:Documents:meta.rtf") to ("Macintosh HD:Users:gast:Documents:vis:")
    end tell
    end backupFileToFolder

But adding the date in the filename doesn't work for me.
Might help if you showed how you were trying to add the date.
That said, it shouldn't be hard to do. There are several ways of getting the date in the format you want, either via AppleScript or a simple shell command:
    AppleScript:
set curDate to (get current date)
    set dateStr to getYear(curDate) & "-" & getDay(curDate) & "-" & getMonth(curDate)
    on getMonth(theDate)
set cM to month of theDate as integer
    return text -2 through -1 of ("0" & cM)
    end getMonth
    on getDay(theDate)
set cD to day of theDate as text
    return text -2 through -1 of ("0" & cD)
    end getDay
    on getYear(theDate)
set cY to year of theDate as text
return text -2 through -1 of cY
    end getYear
Note this is a little more verbose than it needs to be, but it has the flexibility of formatting each date element (year, month, day) as you like.
If you want a shell version:
set dateStr to do shell script "date +%y-%d-%m"
Now you have the dateStr with the date you want, so it's easy to rename the file.
Just replace your duplicate command with the following:
set backupFile to duplicate startFile to folder targetFolder
set n to name of backupFile -- get the current file name
set nE to name extension of backupFile -- get its filename extension
set baseName to text 1 through (-1 + (length of nE)) of n -- work out the name without the extension
set newName to baseName & dateStr & "." & nE -- work out the new name using the dateStr
set name of backupFile to newName -- and rename the file

  • Cannot access backup files external drive - only unknown user can

I've been in problems since a while with the _unknown user issue. I've read several discussions like the following:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2290911?threadID=2290911
My problem is the following. I upgraded to snow leopard 10.6.7 and I did a clean install so I wiped out my internal harddrive, I wanted to start from scratch again. I figured that I would be able to access all the files on my external harddrive in my Timemachine backup. Everything works fine, except that I can't access the time machine backup. It says 'you have no access' under Info of these maps and only user _unknown can read and write.
I guess the solution must be that I create a new user account which corresponds with UID of the _unknown user account and that should replace it and should restore access to the files? The only thing is that it is a timemachine backup so I don't know if that poses some additional problems. It would be helpful if someone could explain me what the real problem is, I've been trying lots of thing, but I'm afraid that I would make things worse. So your help we be greatly appreciated!

You will have great difficulty defeating the ACLs and permissions on your backups.
Your best bet is to start over; erase your disk, install OSX, and use Setup Assistant to transfer all your stuff.  See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups?, and note especially the green box there.
