Insufficient privileges WD external hard drive

After getting into an endless restart loop, I archived and installed a clean OS. Now I cant access my WD external (my Passport) HD because "insufficient privileges".
I have explored various threads and tried even using terminal to no avail .
chmod 775 "/Volumes/volumename/" to remove the privilege.
In Get info , sharing and permissions, it shows as access "custom" and it wont allow any changes to this.
Any ideas?

Select the drive then Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Ownership section at the bottom look for a checkbox in the lower left corner labeled "Ignore ownership on this volume." If it is checked then click on the lock icon and authenticate. Uncheck the box. Since the only thing you've mentioned is "custom" I'm not sure what to tell you to do other than be sure all entries except Everyone is set for read and write. Everyone should be read only. Now open the Terminal and at the prompt enter:
sudo chown root:admin /Volumes/"volume name"
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted.
killall Finder
Press RETURN.
You should see the correct ownership and privileges in the still open Get Info window if all is well.
Now this only affects the drive itself. It will not change anything you have stored on the drive. If you cannot access your files, then we need to know what specific permissions problem you have in that regard and whether it's limited to some files or everything on the drive.

  • "Applying privileges to external hard drive" won't stop?

I recently got a new MacBook and migrated all my data from an external harddrive to my new machine. I use the external drive also for storing my media, but since using the new machine I have to authenticate every addition/change to my media in the subfolders with my system admin password. I looked around and found in the drive info a section on Sharing and Permissions and selecting my account clicked "apply to enclosed items" thinking this would solve my problem (do tell me if it won't!). The process, however, is taking forever. I did something that might have been stupid, namely quit the process "locum" in the activity monitor as I assumed that was the application process. I then tried to "apply to enclosed items" again, but the process wouldn't start. I then restarted my machine and started the process for the third time, but it's now been over an hour and there's no sign of progress.
So my question is firstly, is what I'm doing going to help me with not having to authenticate every action in the drive subfolders? Secondly, is the length of the process related to the amount of data on the drive (I have just under 400GB) or is something going wrong?
Thanks very much for reading, I'd appreciate any help you might be able to give!

In the Get Info panel, there should be a box to "Ignore ownership on this volume" Check that box and you should then have full permissions.

  • HT1751 I am trying to backup my iTunes library onto an external hard drive but it won't complete due to 'insufficient privileges for some of the items'. Am I doing something wrong and is there a solution to this problem?

    Hi All,
I am currently trying to backup my iTunes library onto an external hard drive so that I can copy it onto my new Macbook Pro. I have been following the steps posted on the Apple website however each time I get a dialogue box stating:
'The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items'.
Is this because I have items that were bought under another persons iTunes account? If so, is there a solution to this problem? Or am I doing something completely wrong?
    Thanks in advance,

  • When I try to access files on my external hard drive on one macbook, it says I have insufficient access privileges. I use the external hard drive on my other macbook and it works fine. How can I fix this problem?

I've tried looking the answer up on google, but I've come up empty handed. Do I need to change permissions somewhere? I've tried setting everyone to have read and write acess on both machines and that didn't work either.
My macbook that works perfectly with the hard drive is running snow leopard. the other macbook is running leopard. i'm not 100% certain what brand my external is but it says firewire800/usb2.0 on it.
i appreciate any help i can get!

I bought a 160gb iPod classic every time I try to put music on my external hard drive only copy up to 1500 songs and then freezes Itune me and I can not close, asks me to restore the ipod as factory, and do nothing . I try to close the program and itune will not let me, I try to turn off the computer and I can not shut, I looked to see if the iPod disk errors and says it's okay. I restored it about 8 times and I've put music and videos but I always delete everything. I crushed and Selection Menu to enter diagnostic sistemade or ipod and I put the manual test where I enter the IO and q tells me everything is fine. I have already given several Format directly from the Windows 7 and anything either, I always delete everything from passing over 1300 songs and I congeal whole team. No longer have to think of this company because Apple gives no solution has this issue.

  • Can't set up an iPhoto library on external hard drive: access privileges

    Hi all
I am trying to set up an extra iPhoto library on an external hard-drive to store some of my photos.
I get the following message: 'iPhoto cannot create a new library in this location because you do not have enough access privileges.'
The external hard drive is Formatted: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), is 500g capacity and is empty. Also 'Ignore ownership on this volume' is ticked.
I am the administrator of this computer (imac) which is running Yosemite 10.10.1
Any clues as to what I need to do to make this happen? I'm not much of a techie!
    Cheers
    Finella

Once you've confirmed that the EHD is formatted correctly and all is well (run Disk Utility and repair the disk) try the following to create an almost "duplicate"  library on the EHD:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the EHD as the location where you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • External Hard Drives Mysteriously Losing Read/Write Privileges...

I am currently running 10.5.8 OSX and for some reason all of my external hard drives are mysteriously losing their Read/Write privileges on my Mac Pro. I have not altered anything within my account or settings to my knowledge. I continue to have to unmount the drive, connect it to my MacBook Pro, reset the privileges, then re-mount to the Mac Pro to get it to Read Write. What could be causing this?

    HI,
    Try repairing disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Please help - external hard drive security / privileges issue.

Yesterday while messing around with my mac I stupidly changed a setting I can't seem to remedy.
I may have somehow selected an obscure security / privileges option, most likely within the 'get info' option and now my external hard drive icon is not visible on my desktop so I can reselect it to unselect the setting. I know its ok because 'disk first aid' can verify its presence but I can't see it.
Urgently need access as I have data i need to retrieve.
    Please help.
    G4 OS 10.4

I`m a little confused. Disk First Aid is a utility from MacOS 9.
Do you mean disk utility ?
If yes, in the upper line is a button for unmounting a disk. I don`t want to try it, but is it possible that a unmounted disk can be mounted again ?
I just found out, that when you move the cursor over the button, it says: unmount or mount a disk. Maybe that`s it.

  • External Hard Drive not allowing Macbook enough Privileges - HELP PLEASE

    Hi all,
Im new to the Apple Notebooks, bought my Macbook pro yesterday.
I need your help with moving pictures etc to my external hard drive which is a Buffalo DriveStation 2TB USB 2.0...
I've tried a few online video's explaining the "Change your import storage to the External hard drive" etc and holding and dragging into my hard drive but no hope.
My mac pops up with something like "OS X doesn't have enough privileges" also another note came up "Microsoft Software is not supported on the OS X"
Any tips or should I look for a different hard drive?
Any help with be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jo.

The drive is probably formatted in the Windows NTFS format. you need to format it in the Mac format. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a partition table of GUID. You do that in Disk Utility.
Go to the Utilities folder in the Applications folder and open Disk Utility. Select the top most entry for that external, it will have the drive model and size. Click the partition tab and then select one partition from the Partition Layout area drop down. Make the Format as stated above and then click the Options button and set that to GUID. lose the Option window and click the Apply button. All data on that drive will be erased so if you have Windows files on it that you want to keep save them to a Windows computer before you start this process.

  • On my mac I have my downloads from i tunes. I have previously transferred thousands of songs onto an external hard drive. How do I show these songs and albums in my i tunes on my mac without adding them to the computer as there is insufficient space ?

PLEASE HELP ME. I transferred my music library onto an external hard drive as it contains about 30 000 songs. I got a second hard drive as extra security and loaded the songs onto that as well. Both hard drives now contain my music library however when I click onto my i tunes on my mac I am only seeing the music that I have downloaded from the i tunes store that has been kept in the cloud. How do I get my music from the hard drive to be recognized on my mac? Please, please, please help!!!

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.

  • Permissions problem when copying files from external hard drive

    Hi.
I have recently reinstalled leopard (wiped the hard drive clean) on my macbook pro. (10.5.4). I had used Time Machine so I have a complete backup. But I only wanted a few of the files so I didn't do a backup restore. I went into the file directory of the backup on my external hard drive and dragged the folders I wanted back over to my laptop.
But I'm in permissions **** though! When I want to copy them over I get an alert saying you may not have privilege to do this and asks for my password. I enter my password and it copies fine. But every time I want to do anything with those files (like move them, or delete them) I have to re enter a password.
So, inside of the terminal I do a "ls -al" command to see whats going on and find that everything is the same as a natively created folder except for a '@' on the permissions column. I do a "ls -al@' to see more details and I get this:
    drwxr-xr-x@ 6 xenition staff 204 Jul 20 17:08 Assets
    com.apple.metadata:_kTimeMachineNewestSnapshot 50
    com.apple.metadata:_kTimeMachineOldestSnapshot 50
I did run repair permissions from Disk Utility and it didn't solve it. How can I resolve the permissions on these files?
    Message was edited by: risingtiger

run ls -aleO on the copied files and see if there are any ACLs or flags.
BTW, another (and possibly better) way to restore files from an old TM drive is via TM interface. control-click on TM in the dock and choose "browse other TM disks" select a disk to browse and go at it. when you try to restore something you'll be prompted for a location to restore it to and maybe a password.

  • How to delete music from an external hard drive

Hi I have 1 Toshiba and 1 WD Elements external hard drive which is working find the only problem I have is  that I can not transfer files music videos nothing between this 2 external Hard Drive's and I can not Delete  anything while they are connected to My 13 inch MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite 10.10.1
please let me know what do I Have to do Thank You

A word of warning. You can change privileges for yourself as an administrator (Me) but don't interfere with others in the list on the left ("System" "Wheel" etc.)
Here's a shot of the Get Info window for a partition on an external hard drive whose icon I selected on the desktop.
Yours should look something like this. The one you want is the one at the top (Me).
Move your cursor to Read only in that line and click on it. You should get this, or something like it.
Now move your cursor to Read & Write at the top on the left and click on it.
    This should be the result.
You now have read and write privileges for that disk or partition and should be able to put files on it or delete files.

  • Can't download iOS 5 to my old iPhone 4 - I get an error message saying I don't have enough space on my computer, but I know that I do.  How can upload successfully?  Or can I hook up an external hard drive to ENSURE I have enough space? If so, how?

I just tried to download the new iOS 5 software during my sync with iTunes on my computer to my iPhone 4, however, I got an error message saying that I did not have enough space on my computer to continue (even though I am pretty sure I do).  It offered me the choice of deleting much of the media on my iPhone in order to continue, which of course I declined.
How can I ensure that I have enough space on my computer to download the new iOS 5 software?  I don't want to delete anything on my computer and I have already defragged.  Can I just hook up an external hard drive which I am certain has enough space?  If so, how can I ensure that iTunes recognizes the external hard drive as the drive that it should be downloading the software to?
    Thanks

Why, if it told you you have insufficient space on your computer, would it suggest making more space available on your phone?
At a guess, you have insufficient space on your phone. Installing software will typically require more space than the final size of the software, perhaps even twice or three times as much, for the installation process. You can easily dump some videos or music temporarily, and then synch them back in afterwards.

  • HOW TO MOVE YOUR ITUNES LIBRARY TO AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

Read these directions before actually doing anything, just so you can do this right. I've messed things up before, it can get ugly...
That being said, here's what you've gotta do if you're running on a Mac:
Have all your music on the external hard drive. It should be organized in folders the way iTunes set it up
The folders should be organized something like this:iTunes Media (Top folder, everything is inside of this folder)
    Audiobooks
    Automatically Add To iTunes
    Books
    Downloads
    iPod Games
    iTunes U
    Mobile Applications
    Music
    Podcasts
    Ringtones
    TV Shows
    Voice Memos
Those folders are what I have in my 'iTunes Media' folder on my external hard drive. You don't necessarily need to have all of these folders. (I happen to just have a lot of things in my iTunes.)
    Finding your iTunes Library Files
The way iTunes works is there are two parts to make what you see in iTunes work right. There's your media (songs, video, iPod games and Apps, etc) and there are your library files. They tell iTunes what your playlists are, where your 'iTunes Media' folder is located, and a lot of other important things. Here is how to find the iTunes Library files (there will probably be more than one!)
    Look in (yourusername)/Music/iTunes
There will be a few things in here:
    Album Artwork (It's a folder)
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    Itunes Library.itl
    iTunes Media (a folder)
iTunes Music Library Backup.xml (this file might or might not be here. If there is no file with this name, it's okay.)
    iTunes Music Library.xml
Some "temp" files (maybe, maybe not -- they are not important for this)
Anything in the list that is BOLDED needs to be placed in (yourusername)/Music/iTunesIf you copied these files to your external hard drive, you will need to copy them back onto your internal hard drive. These library files do not need to be in the same place as your iTunes Media folder.
Telling iTunes Where Your Music Is
Now that your iTunes Media folder is on your external drive, and your Library Files are in place in "(yourusername)/Music/iTunes", we need to open iTunes.
On the top bar of the screen, go to iTunes>Preferences.
In preferences, go to the farthest right tab, titled "Advanced" with a picture of a gear.
The top section says "iTunes Media Folder location" and underneath that you see a filepath ending in the 'iTunes Media" folder.
This path is probably wrong, not leading you through the external hard drive.
    If it is incorrect:
Click "change" on the right and then locate the folder in the prompt that shows up. Once the "iTunes Media" folder on your external hard drive is highlighted blue, click "Open" in the bottom right corner of the window.
Give iTunes a moment or two (depending on the size of your library) to re-locate all of your songs. Voila!
    If it is correct:Do nothing!
While you're in the advanced section, let's check to make sure you have a few important 'housekeeping' things checked off:
"Keep iTunes Media folder organized" (CHECK THIS BOX!)
"Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" (CHECK THIS BOX!)
At this point, iTunes should be all ready to go. Before I get into any troubleshooting, note a few things:
If you ever unplug/disconnect the external hard drive from the computer, you must first make sure that iTunes is NOT running.
Also, if the hard drive is unplugged and you open up iTunes, all of your songs will have little symbols next to them. Until you plug/reconnect the hard drive, the songs will stay like this and will be missing.
    TROUBLESHOOTING:
Not having permission to access the external hard drive:
In Finder (or on your desktop), right-click the external hard drive (if you don't have right-click, control-click will also work).
    Click on "Get Info"
A thin, tall window will appear on the screen.
Part One:In the "General" section, make sure that "Locked" is unchecked. If it IS checked, uncheck it.
    Part Two:
We are now focusing on the very bottom of the window, where it says "Sharing & Permissions"/
In the bottom right corner of the window there is a small padlock icon. Click it. When asked for an administrator password, type it in, and click "Ok".
You will now notice that the bottom section of the 'get info' window is not greyed out anymore. Make sure your user name (it says in parentheses "(Me)" so there is no going wrong here) has "Read & Write" privileges. If not, click on whichever privilege you currently have, and a drop-down menu will appear. Click on "Read & Write".
If you have any other issues, I will add them to the troubleshooting list to help you out. Hope this was helpful!

My iTunes library is set up the way I said in the top post and works totally fine.
Yes, and that is the default structure to which I was referring.  iTunes will organize it that way automatically unless people do start changing settings (in which case they should know what they are doing and how iTunes works with library files and media structure.)
Both ways work, the advantages of mine would be that should iTunes try looking fo a library, it will always be in the default location.
It makes people think they have to change media location in preferences.  They do not unless they want to relocate media only and leave other things on their internal drive (in which case there is no point in copying library files to the external, and you certainly wouldn't want to then delete them from your internal).
Downside is that then should someone move their iTunes library to anther computer they need to remember to get those library files on the external hard drive.
Just copy the whole iTunes folder and it will get the library files to the other drive in one step, along with all the other files.
Your post has good stuff but it makes a move appear intimidating and look like people have to do a lot of organizing to move the collection.  It also throws in  extra steps (namely altering preference settings) that could cause confusion or even make a mess of things.  If people leave iTunes to default preference settings (which most people do) the move summarizes into a short line:  Copy a folder and hold an extra button the next time you start iTunes.
Note that the instructions in the link I provided earlier do also include many steps, but those are to ensure that everybody does have it all organized correctly before simply copying the iTunes folder.  In the end it is just a simple action.
