INsufficient storeage space on IPOD shuffle

My new 1 GB IPOD shuffle seems to run out of storeage space after about 50 songs. It is supposed to store approx. 240 songs.
An error is posted on my computer and everything freezes.
It almost seems that I did not get 1 GB worth of memory.
Help???

Are you doing some math & figuring you have 3.60 MB
left so that is 30 minutes?
well, assuming that i have 240 songs on my ipod and each are actually 4 minutes long, that would mean that i have 960 minutes worth of songs. 960 minutes is 16 hours, so that means, 1 GB - which is what the ipod shuffle can only hold/have - is 16 hours. i've already added all of my music (of my choice) on my ipod and my music list is 15.5 hours. so, if there is 16 hours total on a 1 GB of space, that means i have 30 minutes left of non-music.
i've already figured out my problem. all i wanted to know why there is already 3.60 MB (but now that i think about it, you are right that it's something like 3 minutes and something seconds...i actually made a typo...it was 366 MB (no decimal point, i thought i saw one), my bad!) being used by an unknown/"other" file and how to delete it if at all possible. that's my bad for not being clear.

  • New ipod shuffle 4 running 1.0.2 won't autofill randomly as not enough space

My old shuffle 2 could autofill from a large playlist, eg all my 5* songs, even if the playlist was much bigger than the shuffle size. The shuffle 4 won't do this. Is there a solution?

    Hey surfthemaze,
Thanks for the question. Let’s check the settings of your iPod shuffle to make sure it matches the following:
    Syncing music to iPod shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1719
Syncing music using Autofill to iPod shuffle (3rd and 4th generation)
    1. Connect iPod shuffle to your computer and open iTunes.
    2. Select iPod shuffle in the Devices section on the left side of the iTunes window.
    3. Click Settings in the main iTunes browser window, in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
    4. Select your settings in "Autofill settings" and click OK.
    5. Back in the main iTunes browser window, click the Autofill From menu in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.
    6. Choose the music source list or playlist you want to Autofill on your iPod.
    7. Click Autofill in the main iTunes browser window, in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. The iTunes LCD will display the sync progress and notify you when the iPod sync is complete.
    8. If you have turned on disk use, disconnect iPod shuffle by selecting it under Devices and clicking the eject icon.
Note: iPod shuffle is ready to be disconnected when the status light stops flashing.
    Thanks,

  • HT1477 I am trying to install a new iPod Shuffle and my pc does not pick it up.  My pc is running windows 8.1 os.  I do not see that os in the list of operating systems.

I am trying to install a new iPod Shuffle and my pc does not pick it up.
My operating system is Windows 8.1 and windows 8 does not appear
in the list of operating systems.

You are referring to OFFICE 2010, not Windows XP or 7.
And which version of Windows do you have?
NEVER begin before you have a backup, ideally one you have tested and know works.
You don't really install Boot Camp, the Assistant is a partition tool utility.
You may just want Office 2008 for Mac.
If you need Office for Windows, perhaps run Windows in a VM like Parallels or Fusion.
Buy some backup drives and start using TimeMachine for one backup, then weekly backup with SuperDuper.
IF there is now a partition for Windows, all you need is to buy Windows, and I would recommend Windows 7 Home Premium (retail) which is about US$149.
Has nothing to do with free space. Office 2010 isn't to boot from. In fact, you can copy the disc to a folder (1.25GB) and run SETUP from there.

  • If I purchased an ipod shuffle in 2011, and I am wanting to get an ipod touch in a few weeks, would I be allowed to purchase one, or would I be told that I couldn't by a store?

What are the rules of purchasing an ipod?, Do you have to wait until your ipod won't charge anymore to get a new one?, I bought the most recent ipod shuffle in two thousand eleven, and it wasn't what I expected it to be, and I am planning on getting the ipod touch in a few weeks with my own money. What are the pros and cons of the ipod touch?, I have a friend who has the ipod touch and he says it is amazing!, also what is better the black player, or white player?  What earbuds could I purchase?, The original ones that come with the ipods hurt my ears and they don't stay in well, also is it necessary to get a case, or should I just forget about it?, is facetime free or do you have to pay for it?. Is it necesary to have 32 gb?, or should I stick to 8 gb?

no, you have every right to buy an ipod, no matter how receant your old one. plus the company wants the money from buying an ipod. Pros and cons of ipod touchs are generally up to the user, but they are pretty cool.  Black or white depends on your choice. Earbud wise, you could go for out of ear ones like headphones or even those ones with a removable tip. You WILL NEED A CASE for your ipod, as of they absorb shock if the ipod is dropped and prevents the thin glass screen from breaking. facetime is free as long as there is wifi. As to whether you want a 32gb or 8 gb is up to you, how much space do you want? What i will tell you about having an 8gb with apps, songs and movies it that it is actually really small. so it all depends on what you put on it. THERE are NO rules of purchasing an ipod.

  • How can I sync both Music files and Podcasts to my Ipod shuffle 4th gen?

I have been trying to do this for a very long time. I own an Ipod shuffle 4th generation and I want to be able to listen to music, podcasts, etc without having to switch between the different formats using Itunes. Everytime I try to sync music and podcasts to my Ipod, it will only play one of the two types but not both. I have plenty of space on my Ipod but it just won't sync music and podcasts together. I have tried using Smart playlists but whenever I try to add the different types of media, it shows nothing in the playlist. Any help with this would be appreciated.

If you are using automatic syncing, you need to set up syncing on the shuffle's Music tab and Podcasts tab in iTunes...
Select your shuffle in iTunes.  There is a bar of "tabs" (starting with Summary).
Click on Music there.  This Music tab is where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the shuffle.  Sync Music is checkmarked, if you use automatic syncing.  Your entire iTunes Music library (plus podcasts) probably will not fit, so you can select to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Below that, make a selection of songs to sync by checkmarking playlists, artists, albums, and/or genres.  For example, if you want to keep it simple, create a new playlist in iTunes and put ALL songs you want on the shuffle on that playlist.  Back on the Music tab, find and checkmark only that one playlist under Playlists as your selection of songs.
Click on the Podcasts tab next.  This is where you tell iTunes how to sync podcasts to the shuffle.  Sync Podcasts is checkmarked.  Make you selection of podcast episodes below.
When you click Apply, your selection of songs and podcasts sync to the shuffle.  Going forward, all changes to your iTunes library that relate to your selection on the two tabs sync automatically when you connect the shuffle, or when you click Sync.
When you use the shuffle, podcasts do not play from the default All Songs list.  To play podcast episodes, you use the VoiceOver feature to select the podcast from the playlist menu.
This document has information about setting up and using VoiceOver on a shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4322
You can also play podcast episodes from a playlist.  If you put podcast episodes on a playlist, that playlist needs to be checkmarked on the Podcasts tab, where is says Include Episodes from Playlists.  You can then use VoiceOver to select that playlist from the playlist menu.  To play podcast episodes from a playlist, the shuffle's power switch must be in the play-in-order (middle) position.  The podcast episodes will then play in playlist order (as you organized them in iTunes before syncing).

  • Ipod Shuffle 2nd gen isn't recognized by my MacBook with new cable.

I have an Ipod Shuffle 2nd gen, I used to charge it with the original dock that came with it, but my cat ate that and I had to buy a new cable. I'm a newbie to computer stuff so bear with me if the info I provide is insufficient. The cable I bought looks like this:
    http://www.reghardware.com/2009/03/13/ifixitshuffledisassembly/
But now when I connect it to my MacBook Pro it won't get recognized at all! Does this new sync cable only work with the latest generations of Ipod Shuffle? What gives?

The Apple store shows that the type of USB cable you bought is only compatible with the 3G and 4G shuffles.

The 2nd generation shuffle is compatible with the dock style USB cable:

  • IPod Shuffle 2nd Gen suddenly freezes PC and I've tried everything, Help!

In the past few days, my iPod Shuffle 2nd generation suddenly started to freeze my computer moments after it syncs new music onto it or is plugged in for awhile. I've tried everything to find out why it's begun doing this. Here's what I've tried:
    - I recently updated to iTunes 9 around the time it began freezing, and thought maybe that was the problem. I completely uninstalled it and installed an older version. Didn't work.
    - I reformatted and reset my iPod to factory settings. Didn't work.
    - I've done many complete virus scans on my PC. It didn't find anything.
    - I've synced the iPod with another PC to see if it would freeze it. It didn't and works fine elsewhere, leading me to believe there's some software issue going on.
I've checked many forums and read many stories about similar issues but nobody has a concrete answer. I don't have a free Customer Service call left with Apple. Any body have any ideas?
    My computer stats:
    - Windows Vista
    - Plenty of free space
    - HP Pavillion notebook
    - iPod Shuffle 2nd gen
    - Currently using iTunes v. 8.2

Still no solution here, even with the help from Apple's tech support team. The first person I spoke with was the most helpful in knowing about this issue. He guided me on how to cleanly uninstall iTunes (all 6 components) and then reinstall. He said the Apple Mobile Device Support Assistant has been causing issues when updating and sure enough, I looked at the date when I updated to the latest iTunes, it was the exact date when my computer began having the freezing issue. Unfortunately, this didn't work. I completely uninstalled the iTunes again, and tried installing an older version. Didn't work.
I called Apple tech again today, and the person felt there was a conflict issue with other programs, so he sent me a guide on how to use msconfig to figure out which program could be doing that. Again, that option didn't work and iTunes froze again.
I really, really, really agree with the first Apple tech support person I spoke with that iTunes' latest version is the issue. It's no coincidence that the problem began right after the update occurred, but now I'm left with two iPod devices rendered completely useless since whatever was installed onto my PC in the latest iTunes has glitched up the system.

  • My iPod Shuffle 4th Generation refuses to sync up the PC plays count

As soon as a new podcast episode arrives in my Podcasts iTunes library, it shows up in that library with a plays count = 0.   When I start up iTunes and update the podcasts, I then copy all new (unplayed) podcasts to a Playlist named "1-UnheardPodcasts", then mark all unplayed podcasts in that playlist as Played, thereby setting the play count on those podcast episodes to 1.   I then copy a bunch of podcasts to my iPod shuffle 4th gen and wander off cackling into the night to listen to those podcasts.  In the fullness of time, I return to my PC, fire up iTunes, plug in my shuffle and see that the shuffle shows the plays count (on the episodes I have listened to) as 2.   I then sync the iPod to iTunes but the plays count in my "1-UnheardPodcasts" playlist and in the podcasts library both stubbornly remain set to 1.   I then have to manually pretend to listen to the podcasts in iTunes again, fast forward to the end of each podcast, let it finish, then the plays counts everywhere are set to 2.  I can then delete the plays count 2 episodes from my "1-UnheardPodcasts" playlist and all is right with the world and I'm ready for new episodes to randomly appear in my podcasts library.
My older first generation shuffles (both of which died and were replaced by the 4th gen shuffle recently) did not have this problem.  Sync from those would always update the plays count on the iTunes application on my PC to match what it showed for the plays count on the shuffle.
What's up with that?  Is there any way to fix this?  It happens whether or not I completely fill up the shuffle.
I also have problems with getting back to where I left off if I stop playing a podcast by pressing the centre button on the iPod face and then try to resume play a few minutes later.  If I shut down the shuffle and restart it, it seems to always resume play from where it left off.
I've got everything turned on in the iPod settings menu except the thing about reserving disk space for Windows files.
I've got what claims to be the latest version (11.0.4) of iTunes running under Windows 7 (64 bit) on a BIOSTAR MB with an AMD phenom II X4 820 2.8 GHz quad core processor with 8 GB of RAM and at least 50 GB of free disk space.
When I click on check for updates with the iPod attached on the iPod settings window, it comes back with "you have the latest version"

If you are loading the shuffle manually, by dragging podcast episodes to the shuffle in iTunes, that is probably why the playcount does not update in your iTunes library, after playing the podcast episode on the shuffle (and then connecting the shuffle).
When you use the manual method to load the shuffle, the iTunes library on the computer and the library on the shuffle are separate.  iTunes does not keep the two libraries "in sync."  Therefore, data such as playcount are not synced back to the computer when you connect the shuffle.
If you set up automatic syncing using the shuffle's Podcasts screen in iTunes, iTunes keeps your iTunes library in sync with the shuffle's library (based on how you set up the shuffle's Podcasts screen).  So data, such as playcount, should sync back to the iTunes library.  In your case, if you maintain a playlist in iTunes with the unheard podcast episodes you want on the shuffle, you can select that playlist on the shuffle's Podcasts screen in iTunes (where it says Include Episodes from Playlists).  iTunes will automatically keep that playlist in sync between your computer and the shuffle.
NOTE:  If you are currently NOT using automatic syncing, and you also have music on the iPod, you will also need to set up the shuffle's Music screen in iTunes.  When you start using automatic syncing, any content on the shuffle that was loaded manually is replaced.
The 1st and 2nd gen shuffles used a different very simple software design, compared to other iPods.  They did not have an automatic syncing mode.  You loaded it manually, but it was linked to only one iTunes library at a time.  Therefore, although you loaded it manually, iTunes does keep data (such as playcount) in sync.  On all other iPods, including the newer shuffles, iTunes only keeps the data in sync if you use automatic syncing.

  • Ipod shuffle wont play pls HELP!

    Hey people
If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated. Right. I have windows 98 and my ipod shuffle has been working fine with it, i have been using winamp to transfer songs onto it.
BUT recently, i have transferred songs to my ipod as normal, they look like they have transferred as normal, but when i safely eject the ipod and try to listen to the songs, theyre not on there. just blank spaces where they shud be.
so i just formatted the whole thing to see if that wud work. i went to realplayer this time to transfer songs. again, it seemed as if they transferred as normal. but when i tried to listen to them, the error light came on indicating no songs are on it. BUT when i put it bak into the computer, realplayer indicated the files are on there! the exact songs i tried to transfer!
whyyyyyyy oh whyyyyyyyy wont they play! sumbody purlease help me, i cant hack the boring commute to work without music!!
    thanks!!

Just reformatting the Shuffle with windows will destroy the firmware that runs the shuffle. IF you can't download ipod updater for Windows 98 than you will first half to "restore" the shuffle on a machine that can run Ipod updater. Than you can try and go back to third party windows 98 apps.

  • Trouble restoring my iPod Shuffle (error 1418)

So this is my specification of my iPod:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/ipod/iPod_shuffle.html
I have a machine of Windows Vista and it is a notebook.
My iPod worked absolutely well with my machine and my iTunes for some days.
About a month ago, there was a prompt talking about I need a Windows Update patch installed as removing iPod from a Vista machine eventually hurts the iPod.
I checked every detail with Microsoft.com, Apple.com as well as Google.com and decided to patch my OS with the given link.
However the installer said the update did not apply to my system.
"Ok, then, let's forget it", I thought and just forget about it.
Just for a few song syncs, I found that there is always some error for the iPod and I have to restore it to get it sync.
As well as there is some way to update my songs, I don't mind to do extra steps.
Then, yesterday, I tried the same thing.
Sync it, ok, can't, then, restore.
However, it comes out an error 1418.
    Retry, the same.
Retry again and again, the same again and again.
Then, I started with Googling. And eventually tried to disconnect it and reconnect it when restoring, which is suggested by this site:
    http://www.javatyger.com/2007/02/solution-to-ipods-evil-1418-error.html
    Then, to Apple support.......
I tried the iPod Shuffle Restore Tool, sorry, not for Vista.
Then, I tried to use an old version of iPod updater to restore it, can't.
Now, I have the following symptoms:
    1. iTunes, Windows explorer, actually everything in my machines can recognize the iPod.
    2. iTunes cannot sync. the content.
    3. iTunes cannot restore the iPod and gives error 1418 when trying to do so.
    4. Windows explorer shows iPod in My Computer, clicking its property, it shows no memory space used nor free.
    5. Cannot format the iPod as treating it like an external storage device. Using right-click->format gives no response while using "format I:" in cmd.exe gives "Error in IOCTL Call".
    6. No trace of the iPod having any memory judging from its property and Disk Management.
I hope these information could help figuring out the solution and I will be very thankful with anyone's help.

I have had the same problem with 2 different ipods. I eventually was able to reset one (using the restore utility and Windows XP. When I got back to the main setup screen asking me to name my ipod, i left the autofill box checked. Then when itunes loaded i clicked autofill. Now I have ALL my songs on one ipod but cannot take any songs off it or change playlists.
If you haven't already, try this link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304508 and go thru all the instructions on your XP machine, and see if you get to the same point I am at now. If you do, welcome to a whole new world of frustration!!! then maybe we can figure out what to do from there.
    GOOD LUCK!!!

  • IPod Shuffle with iTunes 6

I recently gave my niece my old iBook running OSX 10.2.8 (she's 11 and the laptop helps her with basic school work). For Christams I bought her an iPod shuffle (2nd Gen) thinking she'd be able to plug the ipod into the ibook and it would connect/work straight away. The version of iTunes on the laptop (iTunes 6) does not seem to support the ipod saying that I have to upgrade to iTunes 7.2 However, iTunes 7.2 will not install on OS 10.2.8. Upgrading the iBook does not seem to be a realistic solution though, as the iBook is one of the old clam shell types with only 10GB of hard disk space and with only a CD reader. Any solutions to this problem will be warmly welcomed.

you probably just need a new laptop.

  • IPod Shuffle 2G Won't Function

So when I plug my iPod shuffle into my computer, I see it pop up in the My Computer, everything is fine. I open iTunes, the My Computer iPod disappears, but everything is fine on iTunes. I go to add new songs and it tells me that it needs to erase everything because it's a new library, again, perfectly fine.
After waiting 8 minutes to transfer 1 song, the iPod tells me there is no free space, so I check the tab and sure enough I have 960mb of "other".
I tried to restore but I get an error message. I tried to reset but it said I needed a 32-bit OS, so I went to my laptop and reset the iPod just fine.
Now when I go back to the desktop, same problems appear, when I copy a song over it waits a few minutes and nothing ends up happening.
The entire time it's waiting the iPod still has a green light.
Is my iPod busted, I want to assume iTunes is at fault but I'm syncing my iPhone just fine, I'm now worried to **** if I want to update my iPhone to 3.0

Try downloading the iPod Reset Utility (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1238 or http://support.apple.com/downloads/iPodReset_Utility_1_0_4_forWindows)from Apple and reset the iPod and then try adding the songs by Auto fill.. This works for me...
But only problem is that when ever you need add a song, we need to reset each and every time and then Update the play list and then do the auto fill...
    *Note:*
The process completely erases all music and data and reinstalls the iPod software version listed below:
    * iPod shuffle (1st generation) - iPod Software version 1.1.5
    * iPod shuffle (2nd generation) - iPod Software version 1.0.4
    Best of luck...

  • Hello, cant clear songs from an Ipod shuffle.

I have an Ipod shuffle that I am trying to clear the songs from and add new songs. When I try and clear the songs it tells me do not disconect and after a while it tells me the update was succesfull and I can disconect my Ipod Shuffle. The list appears to be blank although it still says the same amount of space has/is used as before it was cleared.
I have done the reset to factory settings and that has not solved it. I have then tried to reboot the system and no luck. I have then rebooted the system and still nothing. I have uninstalled Itunes and reinstalled Itunes and still no luck. I have tried 5 diffrant usb ports on this box and nothing.
As a last result I have then installed itunes on 4 diffrant pcs and one lap top and still nothing. The shuffle plays the songs life is good for the most part. I just cant replace them. I even used the auto fill selected the play list I wanted and had the replace all songs selected. When I do this it claims it is updating and then gives an error message of not enough space.
The worst part is the smug sob next to me is enjoying his Iriver man wish I could smack him down. -Nasty I river crap not installed on these machines and never was.- please help me out gang.

    hi acari!
When I try and clear the songs it tells me do not disconect and after a while it tells me the update was succesfull and I can disconect my Ipod Shuffle
