Intel-Based 08 Aluminum iMac(2.44 ghz) Ram upgrade issues...

I bought 4 gigs of ram from newegg (2x2gb sticks). When I put them both in, the computer just wont boot. The fan goes on, the screen remains black, and the fan stops in a few seconds. When I tried another configuration, a new ram stick (2gb) and the old one(1gb), the computer boots up perfectly and shows me that I have 3 gb of ram. Also, I tried this configuration with both sticks of 2gb ram so i think this issue is not related to the new ram. The ram I bought was:
Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Memory For Apple iMac Model KTA-MB800K2/4G
I made sure that my EFI was up to date and im running 10.5.5
Thanks

Yeah I'm with Dennis on this one. It sounds like you are using the wrong memory. Symptoms are similar to what this user had: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8230546#8230546
I use Kingston in my imac and they work perfectly fine if you buy the correct ones. Been using them for years.

  • 24" iMac (Primo 2009) strange RAM upgrade issue

I have a 24" iMac (Primo 2009) at work. I been granted a RAM upgrade by the IT department and have received 2 indentical 4 GB modules.
The 24" iMac (Primo 2009) uses 1066 MHz DDR3 modules and supports up to 8 GB RAM in 2 slots. I have purchased RAM from this source http://www.dustin.dk/product/5010642132/corsair-4gb-ddr3-1066mhz-1x4gb-so-dimm-i mac-macbook-macpro/#intcmp=searchProvider_SiteSeeker (Corsair Mac Memory so they SHOULD be fine.)
    Here's the issue:
I had 2x 2GB modules. I have taken both out.
I have inserted the new 2x 4GB modules but the machine refuses to boot. It gives off 3 beeps-interval-3 beeps-interval (repeats).
I took out one of the 4GB modules from slot B. It boots.
I inserted the one I removed in slot B again so we're back at 8GB. same beeps. No boot.
I switched the 2 4GB modules from slot A+B around. Now beep-interval-beep-interval (repeats) No boot.
I inserted one 4 GB in slot 1, and one of the old 2 GB in slot 2. It boots with 6GB RAM.
I inerted only the one that won't boot when in slot B in slot A, beep-interval-beep-interval (repeats) No boot.
OK - so logical deduction tells me one of the new 4GB RAM modules is defective. No matter what configuration, booting fails with that specific module inserted, though there are different beeps. I also know tha both slots work since the machine works with 6 GB RAM (2+4).
So I called Dustin, and since we're a big customer they sent a new moduel for free. But, I have the same isssue with the new module!! What are the chances I have recived 1 working and 2 defective modules? not big right? So my iMac seems fine with the old 2GB modules and one of the new 4 GB modules, but says no to the 2 other 4GB modules.
YES - I have tried resetting PRAM and SMC to no avail. Any clue?

Switched the 2 modules around, so there's now a 2GB in slot A and a 4 GB in slot B. Still works fine

  • How can I check for spyware on my Intel based mid-2007 iMac running Lion?

I recently received a message stating that my Intel based iMac desktop may contain spyware plus a friend sent me a copy of an email to my iCloud email address that i did not send to him, i was not even home using my iMac on that date. I do have anti-virus software on my iMac from Integra and I do a scan each day before i shutdown the iMac and have not received any such warnings from that software.
I do appreciate any and all advise I can receive in this matter. A long time ago I did receive an email a Yahoo based email address and was notified that I could possibly loose my email account due to junk email being sent from my iMac. I did have the support/warranty from Apple at that time and a phone rep did talk me through steps to check for any intrusion to my iMac with negative results, the iMac was clear of any spyware, etc.
Hoping there is the same for this issue.

You can't use a specific Mac OS X disc for a Mac with a different computer. First, call Apple and buy Mac OS X Snow Leopard > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 Then, make a backup, insert the DVD and upgrade OS X. Finally, open  > Software Update and install the most recent version

  • IMac RAM upgrade issues

I have a 2007 iMac(2.4 Ghz "20 running Snow Leopard) with 1 MB of RAM. I recently purchased 4 MB of Kingston RAM from NewEgg (2 x 2 MB). When I put both 2 MB sticks in the slots, the computer does not start up (it shows the blank screen and you can hear the hard drive whirring, but nothing else). I can only get the computer to start if I have the original 1 MB stick in the left slot and one of 2 MB sticks in the right slot. Is there anything I'm overlooking?
And yes, I did the upgrade properly.

While memory is supposed to be able to run slower than rated, I've always thought it's best to get the memory that is defined for your system.  I would return it and get the 667Mhz version.  Both OWC and Crucial are also respected sources for mac memory.

  • Intel based 21.5" iMac freezes on restart

I have a mid 2010 21.5" iMac running 10.8.1 and whenever I try to restart it freezes on the gray screen. I then have to force power it down and when I power it back up everything seems to be fine. This is not new since upgrading the software.  It seems like it has been doing this ever since I first got it.  Not really that big an issue but certainly annoying.

Are you restarting from Sleep Mode or completely off?
    Try a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

  • Applecare for an early 2008 aluminum imac 2.4 ghz 20"

I have a fast question.. My imac, specs listed above, has had no problems since first boot-up (*knock on wood*).. Problem is, the end of its warranty is fast approaching; this coming May to be exact. Before I roll some hard earned cash across the counter for applecare, I would like to see what other users' experiences has been like with it. Would it be a problem having my machine repaired if I'm located on a military installation in japan?

I don't know about getting service at your location. You may want to contact Apple to get the official information.
As for the value of AppleCare itself, it needs to be considered as insurance. Like any insurance, the purpose is to mitigate the potential loss from an unknown risk by paying a known cost. The +unknown risk+ in this case is failure of your Mac due to a manufacturing defect. The +potential loss+ in the worst case is a Mac that becomes useable and needs to be replaced; the financial loss to you is the cost of that replacement Mac. The +known cost+ is the premium, in this case the price for purchasing AppleCare.
So the real question is, can you readily afford the cost of replacing your Mac if you experience its loss? If yes, you probably should NOT get AppleCare; the risk to you is not that great. If no, (you cannot easily afford to get a new Mac) then you should consider AppleCare. The key consideration is that the cost of AppleCare versus the Mac's replacement cost. Another consideration is the extent of coverage; it is not protecting against an accident or theft. It is protecting you against hardware malfunction caused by manufacturing defects, during the three years from data of purchase.

  • IMac 2.93 Ghz internet speed issues

I just got a new 2.93 Ghz iMac and everything is working fine except the internet. When I go to some pages (such as Facebook), it takes FOREVER for the images to load! The whole page will load but the pictures will take forever. This happens to me on Yahoo and some other sites as well. I have boot camp set up on my computer and when I access the internet from the Windows side, everything loads as it should, so I don't think it's a hardware problem or an incompatibility with my router. I've tried every browser known to man for the mac and I have the same issues with each one. Does anybody know what the problem could be?

    Ok.
Is this Safari and Firefox you're referring to?
    Try these DNS numbers.
    Open System Preferences/ Network/Advanced/DNS.
Add these numbers to DNS Servers
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Click OK. These are safer/faster than most ISP's NDS numbers, and have been patched against DNS poisoning.

  • Early 2008 24" imac ram upgrade issues

Hi everyone.  Hope you guys can help diagnose a problem I have with my imac.
It's an early 2008 24" imac with 3.06 Ghz processor and an NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GS 512 graphics card.
After buying Empire: Total War I thought it best to upgrade the 2GB RAM to 4GB, and purchased 2x2GB sticks 800 Mhz 6400 DDR2 SDRAM.
When they arrived I put them in and the system booted up normally.  I could surf the net ok, but when it came to watching a video on youtube full screen, or playing a game, it would cope for 30secs-1min and then the spinning coloured wheel would show.  I'd then hear noises that sound like a cd trying to eject then the system would hang.  One of three things would then happen:
    - it would automatically reboot showing the multi-lingual startup message that the system was not shut down properly
    - a grey blank screen would appear and not change
    - the grey start up screen would appear with the Apple logo and spinning circle, which would then stop spinning and not change.
If I manually rebooted I just get a black screen and can only hear the fans softly spinning.
I've tried swapping the ram sticks but get the same as above.  It will boot and work normally with either one of the 2GB ram sticks installed on it's own.  It will also work normally with the original 2x1GB sticks installed again.
I don't get the 3 beep warning at startup.
Any thoughts on why this might be happening?  Would the graphics card be the reason for this issue?
I'm not sure if these are related but a few weeks ago I noticed that the brightness would randomly change from normal to half-brightness then back to normal.  These would change every few minutes or so and isn't dependent on what programmes I have running.
I've also recently noticed that the top and back of the imac is getting quite warm to the touch and no don't leave the system running when not in use.

    Hello,
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
    iStat Menus...
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
    And/or iStat Pro...
    http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
EDIT: you won't find iStat Pro at BDAqua's link any longer. (No longer supported by the developer, and not completely compatible with Mountain Lion, but most of its features should still be working.) It's here
    https://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Do you have a link to the exact RAM you bought?
That grapics card is known to be a problem, but the brightness issue seems more like the Backlight or Inverter.

  • IMac keeps crashing after RAM upgrade

I used the website crucial.com to max out the RAM in my iMac. I ordered the RAM they said was for my computer but ever since I have installed it it seems my mac crashes almost on a daily bases. Sometimes its when openining an aplication. Sometimes its when coming back from screen saver mode. When it crashes everything on the screen freezes including the mouse. On occasion the screen will just go grey or black and be unresponsive. How can I fix this? What could the issue be? I keep my iMac updated when it tells me to update but what can be done?

Yeah, sounds like classic symptoms of a bad stick. Odd that crucial send you a bad one- they're usually pretty good. Happens occasionally to anyone though, I suppose. I suspect they'll probably be willing to replace it.
If you got two sticks, maybe you could try booting the mac with one at a time, it's probably only one stick with the failure.

  • Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.0GHz Mid 2007 RAM upgrade

    Hello
I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my 2007 Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.0GHz Mini - I've gone to the Crucial website and it's recommended via the scanner software on there, a 2GB kit (2 x 1GB sticks - http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=C8AF5484A5CA7304) however I thought that this model could handle up to 4GB (although only "see" 3GB), yet the Crucial site says that the 4GB kit from here http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT2KIT25664AC667 isn't suitable for use?
Is their site wrong on this matter or is there a specialised 4GBG kit they produce for the Mac Mini?
    TIA!

Crucial sticks to official maximums given by the manufacturer. This is because they don't want to get ensnared in support issues when firmware updates are required or when you don't see the literal full amount of memory the hardware (sticks of RAM) supply.
Other World Computing is more helpful in this regard, and guarantees their memory just as well as Crucial does.

You have to weigh which is a more effective solution for you.

  • Early 2008 iMac 2.4Ghz. Ram Upgrade

Hi, I have Kingston KTA-MB667/2G (2x2Gb kit) that i used on my Macbook Pro. Anyhow got ride of MacBook Pro kept the ram. Just bought a Early 2008 iMac 2.4Ghz Refurb with 1Gb of Ram (PC-6400 - 800Mhz). I am wondering if my Macbook Pro ram will work in the iMac. I know the ram will probably run slower as i am installing 667Mhz on a system that can support 800Mhz, but i am running memory intensive apps (vista on parallels, etc...) thus want more ram. Rather use the ram i already have instead of spending 60$ on a new 800mhz kit (times are tough right?).

I know the ram will probably run slower as i am installing 667Mhz on a system that can support 800Mhz
Actually, the RAM will run at the speed designated by the logic board. So if you installed faster RAM, it would not run any faster. If you installed slower RAM, it probably will not work, because the logic board will try to run it at the specified faster speed.

  • I Mac (intel based) with OSx 10.6.8, screen shows blur / hazy rectangular patch in the middle. It was small earlier but is growing in size now. How to get rid of it?

My iMac (intel based) all aluminum, OSx 10.6.8, 2.5 GHz Processor, bought about 6 months ago. It was working fine till now. Last few days a hazy blur patch appears in the center of the screen. It's growing with each passing day. How can I get rid of it? Pl help me to understand the problem and the right solutio.
    Thanks in advance.

Did you buy this from an individual, retail computer business or Apple reseller?
Do you have or did you get any type of warranty?
Before I make an assumption that there is something wrong with the LCD screen.
Both sides of the iMac's protective glass may just need cleaning.
The protective glass on your iMac is held on by strong magnets.
Power down and unplug the iMac.
You need two small suction cups to remove the glass from the iMac.
These suction cups maybe able to be found in hardware store or home improvement store.
These suction cups are of the type that can be used on window panes to hold small ornaments or hanging items attached to the window glass.
Place the suction cups at top right and left sides of the glass, make strong suction with the cups and slowly pull the glass forward toward you.
Once you have the top loose, grab the top opposite sides of the glass and pull the rest of the glass panel away from all of the magnets.
Place the glass on something soft like a soft heavy terry towel.
To clean the glass, use a non-ammonia type glass cleaner with a non-abrasive cloth.
A fairly decent size micro fiber cloth will work fine.
Throughly clean both sides of the glass, and replace the glass by putting the suction cups back , line up the bottom of the glass and attach the bottom of the glass, first.
Then slowly move the glass panel inwards holding the suction cups and get the glass close to the top and allow it to "snap" in place.
Restart the iMac and see if the blurriest went away.
If it didn't, then you may have to bring in your iMac to an Apple store or authorized Apple service center for servicing or a replacement LCD panel.
Depending on how much you paid for this iMac, get an estimate for repair.
It may cost more than you paid, for the iMac
You may have to consider purchasing another computer.

  • Aluminum iMac USB port dead?

    Hello,
I think one of the USB ports on my Aluminum iMac (2.0 GHz) has stopped working. When I plug in my iPod into this particular port it no longer recognizes the iPod, however when I move the iPod to another port it is recognized. The port worked fine last week. I've tried other things in this port (e.g. USB hard drive), and it's the same thing.
Could this still be a software issue, or is this pretty much a hardware problem?
Is there any other troubleshooting I can do before calling Apple?
    Thanks for any help.

Hm thanks for the idea den.thed
So how do I then see that something is slowing everything down?
    Here is my tree
    http://img408.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture28et1.png
What I find mostly strange is that apparently there are 2 "USB BUss" which are not being used.
No idea where those are sitting, because all my 3 USB Plugs in the back of the iMac are used up.
Maybe they are 2 free ones in my Mac?
Then what also suprises me it that there is another USB Hub in my USB Hub?
I only have one USB hub, that hub as oyu can see has 2 leaves.
One an external harddrive, the other leaf is a USB Hub with the iPod and another external harddrive.
And as mentioned above I don't know where to look now for the thing that is slowing everything down.
    How do I recognize that?
    Thanks a lot

  • Can I restore an intel based iMac9,1 to OSX10.4?

    Hi all,
I have 12 iMacs running 10.5 leopard.  The library has asked me to roll them back to 10.4 so they are compatible with the booking system they use.  They are intel based iMac9,1.  I have got a 10.4.3 retail restore DVD, but that only works for PowerPC based iMacs.  Is there a 10.4 restore DVD avaible for Intel based 9,1 iMacs?
    Thanks,
    Harry

Only iMac 7,1 and earlier shipped with Tiger.  The Tiger retail installer discs will not work with them if they are Intel, and only the prebundled iMac Intel installer discs would install Tiger on them.  All iMac G4s will work with Tiger retail, though some only had a CD drive, and those will require a Firewire DVD drive to install Tiger retail.  All iMac G5s will work 10.4.6 retail, though those Powermac 8,1 could run 10.4.0 & 10.4.3 & 10.4.6 retail, and 8,2 could run only 10.4.3 & 10.4.6 retail.  PowerMac 12,1 early models could run 10.4.3 retail & 10.4.6, only to later only support 10.4.6 retail after serial numbers xx544xxxxxx and higher where x can be any letter or number.

  • Firewire Transfers between Power PC based Macs & Intel based Macs

    Hey All!
I just picked up my New 17 Inch MacBook Pro last night at my local Apple Store, and I was wondering... I have a lot of important things on my iMac G5 (Music, Photos, Family Home Movies) I feel it's such a pain to move them over on a External HD, putting folders together etc... Then it hit me what about a Fire Wire transfer! But since my MacBook Pro is intel based, and My iMac is a G5 based will it work?
    Thanks

    Hello zach:
    Short answer - yes.
I assume you are using the migration assistant. I have used that a well as a bootable clone. In the latter case, I used a bootable clone made with SuperDuper and then pointed the migration assistant at that as I wanted an exact copy of my old system. My old system, incidentally, was a G4.
