Intel Based Xserve extreme Kernel Panic

My Xserve is suffering from a complete kernal panic. I have swapped out the ram, tried booting from DVD and Admin Tools DVD and every time I get to the log on screen I get the Kernel Panic error.
I have tried safe mode and got the same results. Has anyone seen this happen before?

Are you saying that booting off the DVD gives you a panic?
If so, I vote for serious hardware issue. If you've replaced the RAM you could also try removing all removable components (installed cards, additional drives etc) and that might help but I have a feeling it will end up being something like a mobo issue. To KP a boot off of an optical seems like there must be something fundamentally wrong.
Sorry to be so negative,

  • RAID for Intel based Xserve

Why haven't we heard anything about a RAID card for the Intel based Xserves? Why did Apple release this product without a RAID card? Can anyone shed any light when and if Apple will provide a RAID card for the new Xserve? Will one of the older cards work in the Intel Xserve? I'm really annoyed Apple released the new Xserve without a RAID card option.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the hybrid
SAS/SATA support in the Xeon XServe. I don't know if
    there's a SAS/SATA RAID 5 card on the market
(remembering that the G5 card was a rebadged LSI
card), or how you'd prevent people mixing SAS and
SATA drives on the same card (which is going to be a
    really bad idea).

The problem is hooking in to the ADM data - no cable/jumper connector to take over the motherboard controller's data stream to/from the ADMs.

  • Intel Xserve and kernel panic on high I/O load

    Hi everyone,
Having added our 1st Intel Xserve to our server farm for test purposes we have encoutered several kernel panics on high I/O loads to Xsan volumes and standalone Xraid's.
Below is a portion of the system.log after restart.
The amusing part of this is that the crash reporter that suposed to log the reason for the crash crashed itself.
I was trying to use the new Xserve as a backup server but even with about 20% load on all 4 processors it will panic and restart.
Verdict: absolutley unreliable and useless if you need your Xserve to shuffle a lot of data around. The kernel drivers for the Apple FC card has also been changed which caused problems with our Archiware Presstore backup software.(kernel panic)
Looks like Apple is tampering with the multi core kernel of 10.4.8 on the Intel Xenon Processors at the moment and hasn't got it right yet. Well, we got one revision left to get this fixed before 10.5 comes out and that's still miles away from being usuable to say the least.
Thank you Apple, for selling your latest products that don't work as usual.
Any comments of similar experiences are welcome.

While I have found a few problems as well, I have gotten the intel xserve fairly stable (it did take a while and a lot of apple support calling)
I haven't had kernal panics, but I haven't been able to get the processors above 45% when doing compression. Also, I had some nasty lun masking problems with the fibre card which did result in corrpution of a HFS raid volume.
On the topic of xsan and the intel xserve, it is a BAD idea to try to install anything prior to 1.4.0. Had hangs, crashes and even corruption of the serial licensing daemon. Installing 1.4 and upgrading to 1.4.1 was a huge fix to those issues.
Overall, after a lot of work, it is working well, and does play back 100MB/s video extremely well off an xsan volume. Although, I would be fully content if I could get compressor's utilization of the CPU from 40 to 100%.

  • Extreme kernel panic

I just experienced a kernel panic on my 1st gen Macbook Air running the latest version of snow leopard. The greyed out screen asking for a reboot apeared and I shut down my machine. At the next boot the greyed out screen appeared during the apple logo load up screen. Even though I disconnected everything I weren't able to get past this screen. I then tried safe boot to no avail and then tried to run a hardware test by pressing "D" during startup. This resultet in my mac just closing down where it would earlier display the "You need to reboot..." screen. Now everytime i startup this happens, Thus:
    I press start
    the Apple logo appears
the spinning loading logo appears together with an empty progress bar
    The mac shuts down
Before all this happened I did get an display box asking me to close some open programs to free RAM even though I only had Mail, Safari and iCal open - don't know if this indicates faulty RAM.
I will try to boot from install disc when I come home but any other help would be most apreciated.

If you're unable to boot into hardware test in addition to being unable to boot normally, then you've probably got a hardware problem. Could be a RAM issue, as already mentioned, but it could be something else as well. Your best bet is to contact Apple for service.

  • Xserve smbfs kernel panics

We have an Xserve1,1 in a datacenter that was recently upgraded to OSX 10.6 and now crashes/reboots at least once a week. It runs right next to another Xserve1,1 running 10.4.11 and an Xserve3,1 running 10.5.8 that don't exhibit any problems.
Since upgrading to 10.6.4 we've seen this crash log twice:

    Hi dkmi
I'm having a very similar problem. What was it in this log that pinpointed RAM for you? I'd like to see if my logs have the same thing.
    Thanks!

  • Netboot clients boot into kernel panic

After upgrading my 10.4 server to 10.5 I created a new 10.5 boot image from a new MacBook. Clients (including the Macbook used to create the image) attempting to boot just go to a kernel panic. So, I created a new image from a 10.5.1 retail CD. Same results. both images created using image creation tool on the server.
Then I created another boot image on a new iMac with server tools installed (and updated). boot image was copied to server. Same result.
This is Apple Case #103074193. So far all data is flowing from me to them-nothing coming back.
If you have any insights into this I sure would appreciate hearing from you.
    Thanks
    Jim Pattison

I have an XServe G5 that was upgraded from 10.4.x to 10.5.4, and this alone did not fix the problem. I also had to stop the NFS file sharing service and restart it. The problem was hit-or-miss, but seemed to affect mostly my G5 iMacs, none of the Intel iMacs experienced a kernel panic when netbooting. I'm not sure why it wasn't affecting all of my netboot clients, probably only 25-30% of my G5 iMacs ever had a problem, but those that did were always a problem. Thanks for putting me on the right track with the original solution, I would have never guessed this to be a server-side issue.

  • Kernel panics: what does "Core FIR register check failed" mean?

I have an XServe dual G5 2.0 running Server 10.3.9 unlimited client version that began experiencing frequent kernel panics when I let it install the two most recent security updates. Before I installed those updates, the machine had been up without problems for 220 days.
It is not heavily loaded; it runs a Bugzilla via Apache2, shares some files out via SMB and AFS, and runs a jabber server with less than 20 users.
It generates entries in /Library/Logs/panic.log, but I can't make any sense out of them because they only have numeric entries in the stack traces and a bunch of register values.
I've tried a whole bunch of smallish suggestions on fixing problems with this, including repairing permissions on the disks, repairing the boot volume with Disk Utility, resetting all the NVRAM values, and resetting the PMU. Today I installed Xserve Remote Diagnostics and ran the normal, extended, and memory tests.
The memory test completes without errors. The normal and extended both get errors on the FIR. I've attached the log text from XServe Remote Diagnostics.
Is or could this FIR problem be what's causing my xserve to kernel panic? Anyone have an idea what I can do about this?
    Thanks,
    Frank

I see that "Panic(CPU 1): Unresponsive processor" and that makes me "feel" like it may be a hardware error.  It could be ram related.  Maybe not.
Can you run the Apple Hardware Test from your installer dvds?

  • Can too much memory lead to a kernel panic on a MacBook Pro? specs 2.4GHz intel core i7 16GB DDR3 RAM   late2011..My laptop began suffering from kernel panics 3 mos ago first noticed using public wifi. Gone thru apple support all the way to engineers

Can too much RAM memory in a late 2011 model macbook pro lead to kernel panic? That is what I was told by a senior supervisor from apple support who troubleshot this issue.First noticed this problem in Dec 2014 while using a private wifi at a relative's home. Did not occur again until Feb1 using a public wifi at a hotel. Never happened on my private wifi network until last night  attempting to use airplay. ( have used airplay before without issue). Late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.5; 2.4 GHz Intel core i7, 16 GB DDR3,AMD Radeon HD 6770m 1024 MB graphic card.  The laptop came with 8GB RAM and I installed 8 GB about 2 years ago for some reason I cannot remember... probably because I thought the system was slowing down a little. I know that sounds silly. I do not run multiple programs at a time except I leave 6-8 website tabs open simultaneously. I don't photo or video edit.  I would describe my use as "light"  based on reading these blogs.I had purchased apple support and spent hours on the phone with them in early Feb moving up through support  and senior support to sending logs to the "engineers." Of course lots of things were done some of which I am sorry to report I cannot recall their technical definitions. Deleted  3rd party apps/programs; re-worked start up menu; re-installed operating system; reset " this, that and the other" using acrobatic simultaneous key strokes both in and out of safe mode..Anyway the results from the engineers came back and they suggested that if it happened again I was to remove the 8GB of RAM I had installed as the system was getting confused as to which chip to use.( that is my interpretation of what was said..prob dumbed down for me)...Anyway 1 day after these pronouncements came down I read that Apple had agreed to fix  graphics cards in some late model 2011 MBPs. I felt this was unlikely to be the issue  given all that had been done including an extended hardware test but called the Senior Support Supervisor I was working with to ask him to make sure. He never phoned me back. Should I go to the trouble of removing 8GB of RAM from my laptop? Of course I will try it as the alternative is a new computer.Blogs read that this model can support 16GB but Apple didn't test for it. Senior Supervisor claims this is my trouble.  Does that make sense?  Not to me....but it is clear to all my level of knowledge.  Can a malfunctioning graphics card be missed by an extended hardware test? I appreciate comments.

Is it possible that kadmind is causing this issue because it is being sandboxed?
Can anyone suggest/decipher? Is this familiar to anyone?
The hardware seems to be fine with no other issues, changes in last month.
Feels like launchd is crashing on something but not clear what. I'm a little lost on how to proceed.
    Cheers.

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If it's recurrent, the possibilities are (1) a damaged OS X installation; (2) a hardware fault, which could be internal or in a wired peripheral device; and (3) an obscure bug in OS X.
You can rule out the first possibility by reinstalling the OS. Probably there will be no change. In that case, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or unless it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at leasttwo independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Kernel Panic with Netboot Across Subnet Intel iMac

I have a problem with trying to netboot a intel iMac across the subnet. It connects up goes to the spinning globe then the spinning globe stops spinning and I get a kernel panic.
I've tested that the mac can netboot in the same subnet as the netboot server. But I've got no idea why it's getting a kernel panic when trying to netboot across the subnet.
I'm using bombichs NBAS version 1.2
OS X 10.4.6 Server on the netboot server
I've created the intel netboot image via the updated 10.4.6 "System Image Utility" and have enabled it via Server Admin.
Here is the log I get after the restart.

  • Intel Mac Mini Core Solo - Kernel Panic on Boot

I was wondering if anyone who has purchased the Intel Mac Mini is having issues with Kernel Panics during the booting sequence?
I got a Core Solo from the local Apple store (couldn't wait to play, I'm waiting on the Core Duo I ordered online to come still ). The first thing I did was fire it up check it out for a few minutes, then I put the install disc in and reinstalled a clean OS, with less options because I'm planning on hooking it up to my TV so I don't need space hogs like Garageband etc on my TV computer. I got the updates that popped up, then shutdown the computer. I took it out to the living room and hooked it up to the tv and I got a black message about needing to restart (a kernel panic) right when the blue progress loading bar comes up on boot. I spent a while with it trying to figure out what was wrong, ran the Apple Hardware Test, booted it fine in Safe Boot. Finally I got tired of it and reinstalled the OS again.
It was fine for a day, working fine out on the tv. I brought it back in my room to play with a few things like Darwine, etc. Shut it down, came back an hour or so later booted it up and got the kernel panic on boot. Safe boot still worked fine. I spent some time trying to look for panic logs but didn't see any. I ran the disk utility and did a Full erase and it worked fine. I reinstalled the OS again. Ran MemTestOSX and it worked fine. I left it running the Apple Hardware Test for about 6 hours or more, and it performed perfectly.
This morning it still seemed ok, except sometimes on a cold boot when the blue progress bar screen should come on... my monitor just shows black and the light on the monitor goes inactive. So, I press the button on the back to sleep it, then bring it out of sleep with the keyboard and the OS is sitting there booted.
It seems like a weird combination of software and hardware problems, but maybe it's all hardware problems. I can't get past Safe Boot working when the OS stops loading. Right now the computer is working fine.
I'm waiting for my Core Duo to come in the mail and verify that it works flawlessly, then I'll take the Solo to the store and ask them to look at it.
Anyone have any similar experiences so far?

It seems like the mini is doing alright so far. I think maybe the full erase solved whatever issue it was having. I also got my Core Duo Mini yesterday in the mail and it's performing like a champ. Definitely a nice machine.
I'll close my question for now, since the Core Solo Mini seems alright. But, as a warning don't get on Front Row's bad side. I tried force quitting it because it was taking too long to load the videos folder and then tried shutting down from a terminal and ended up having to turn the machine off.

  • Help, Kernel Panic transferring HD to new Intel Imac

My Imac 500 has a Kernel Panic error and I will need to get my files to my new Imac Intel. Can I do this without resolving the Kernel Panic error? Will my Intel Imac see the HD on my Imac 500 while it is in this error mode?
    Any help is appreciated.

You should be able to use the Migration Assistant to move your user account to the new computer as long as there is no problem with the old computer's disk drive.
Shut both computers off and connect them via a Firewire cable. Boot the old machine into Target Disk Mode. After the TDM logo appears boot the new computer normally. The old computer's disk drive should appear on the new computer's Desktop. Open Migration Assistant (Utilities folder) on the new computer and use it to transfer your user account to the new computer.

  • 17" Intel iMac Kernel Panic, Freezing at Grey Screen and Beeping!

    Hi there,
I have a new 17" Intel iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 250 GB, 1GB Memory with OS X 10.4.8) that keeps getting those "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." messages.
It all started on Sunday when I tried to wake the computer (the computer went on Sleep by itself) and got that message so I restarted the computer but it froze on the grey screen (even before I got the Apple) and it beeped 3 times and then the light on front just kept blinking 3 times. I finally was able to erase and re-install OS X and everything was fine until I left the computer for a while, it went to sleep again, and then the message came back. I restarted and it seems to be fine but I'm worried the beeping and freezing will come back.
The first time this happened, I didn't know enough to "log" the kernel panics but I do know that I deleted a lot of the applications (iWeb, Garage Band, etc.) that I didn't need and fidged with the Share folder in the Users folder. I use a Flash Drive a lot and always left it connected to the keyboard's USB drive. Also leave my iPod Nano connected. After I reinstalled everything, I only deleted the Garage Band demos, installed and deleted the Firefox 2.0 and Opera (wanted to just stick with Firefox 1.0) applications. Only used the Flash Drive a little and haven't connected my iPod on yet. Trying to isolate the problem. I can't remember doing anything else.
Here's the log from the latest kernel panic:

I don't know what this part is about because I don't have a Printer hooked up to the computer.
The only other thing I can think of is I also installed WireTap and StuffIt before the initial crashing. I heard StuffIt was causing problems on some Intel Macs. Also changed a lot of the icons and changed the icon for Preview. I "verified" my hard drive and "verified and repaired the disk permissions" (I'm not that knowledgeable about computers let alone Macs). I also checked my hardware by pressing D while the grey CD OS X was running and get this:
    4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040
usually during the initial testing but when I restart and try it again, it's fine.
Well, that's all I can think of. Any thoughts?
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the reply and links!
After the first problems, I re-seated the RAMs. Does this mean I have to buy new memory? This is a pretty new iMac, bought it in May and have only been using it for maybe two months. Haven't done a whole lot with it but I usually keep a lot of programs open at the same time. I have Adobe CS3 installed too and it says it needs at least 1 GB of memory. I've heard people saying it's best to have as much RAM (this Mac can only take up to 3GB) when using those programs. Maybe it's getting too heavy? Should I only keep one program open at a time? Also, which part of my post indicated that it was memory problems? What the "panic.log" stated or that "4MEME/4/40000000: 2F244040" stuff? Anything else I can do to not let this happen again?
    Thanks again!

  • Airport Extreme and Kernel Panic

We recently purchased a new airport extreme because our old airport was not compatible with our Blueray player. We have not had any problems with our iMac or Macbook (both 10.5), but the iBook G4 displays the kernel panic message on startup and when trying to connect to the network.

This is the panic.log dating back to Jan 19.

  • Kernel panic after trying to update to version 10.4.10 (Intel iMAC)

    Hi all,
yesterday evening I wanted to install (via automatic software update) the new software update "Mac OS X 10.4.10 (Intel)" on my intel iMAC. Unfortunately the installation failed and I don't know why. Having not yet restarted I tried the installation again but again it failed.
Then I restarted my iMAC and since then I get every time now a kernel panic: 'Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI"' ... Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 8.9.1 ...
I tried already several things like
    - booting in safe mode (holding <shift>): not possible
    - hardware check (holding 'D' with MAC OS X DVD #1 in drive): detailed hardware check ok
    - reset of PRAM (holding command-option-p-r): didn't help
    - starting in single-user-mode (holding command-s): get same error (panic)
    - start in "open firmware mode"(holding command-option-o-f): not possible
I'm just a MAC user sind February of this year and not yet that experienced with kernel panics and how to overcome such a problem. I hope that someone more experienced can give me a hint or a solution description how to get my iMAC running again.
    Thanks for any help,
    Michael
