Intel C2D vs CD

I have considered a MBP 17" model. I am axiously awaiting the new Mac OS, and I was wondering if it will be a noticeable difference between a 32-bit processor vs a 64-bit processor on the new OS platform? I do a decent amount of gaming, researching, networking, and using Office.
Do I benefit? I am a student and it's a $500 difference. Is it REALLY worth the C2D over CD? I like newer, greater things, but in this case, it's $500, not $200.
Are 64-bit processors here to stay awhile? I thought 32-bit were around for a while.. and I'm hoping 64-bit will be for a few more years, or am I totally wrong? I understand technology cannot be caught up, but I wouldn't like to be left behind.
Thanks for your help,
-Nick

Nick,
Given no one knows what Apple has in store other than what is on Apple's own website, and that Moore's law is inevitable, you best just get what you need when you need it. Leopard's features as much as anyone knows are right on http://www.apple.com/macosx/
Until that changes, any advice about whether to get the CoreDuo or Core2Duo as relating to Leopard is spurious at best.
The Core2Duo MacBook Pros have the advantage of 3 GB of RAM versus 2 GB of RAM for the CoreDuos, and larger build to order hard drives, and usually an option to purchase the 3 year AppleCare plan (that's three years from date of computer's purchase) anytime in the first year. Some refurbished Macs may have that option depending on the store. Also they have a better graphics card, and better cooling technologies, and support for the new 802.11n standard, if http://www.apple.com/appletv/ interests you. The CoreDuo theoretically supports it to, but if my experiment with video sharing on iTunes has anything to say, 802.11g is not presently fast enough for video streaming via wireless. That may change once the AppleTV is released. My order status says I'll be getting mine on March 6th. By then I should be able to say if the 802.11g can handle it to the AppleTV on my iMac G5. If that can handle it, the CoreDuo shouldn't have a problem either.

  • Hello, I have iMAC 7,1, 20 inch, 4gigs of ram, Intel C2D perfectly runing OS Mavericks (10.9.5), will update to Yosemite, slow down my iMac?

    Hello, I have iMAC 7,1, 20 inch,
    4gigs of ram,
    Intel C2D
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
    HDD 320gig's
iMAC is perfectly runing OS Mavericks (10.9.5), with no lag, and no sluggish working, Multitasking is AWESOME (i have PC, with 8gigs of RAM, GeForce GTX570, etc etc), but i must say this MAC is running way better   a way way, faster and I am Loving it!!! I am using it for making music, and video editing, i am Using Final Cut Pro x, Ableton 9, Logic Pro x, and bunch of other apps and it is working perfectly, and i am so shocked how machine old like this can do that stuff better than any PC i had, and not to mention that I use more time on iMAC than on PC, i use Windows PC just for occasional gaming, but that is like 10% of time, so i use my MAC in 90% of time.
So, enough of my iMAC. I am wondering if I update it to Yosemite, will my iMac slow down, and not continue to work like on Mavericks? Will it become sluggish and unresponsive? Will it affect reliability and stability which  have on Mavericks? And will update delete my personal data (tons of Logic, Ableton and Garage band projects, and tons of Final Cut Pro projects), Applications (because I have some apps which is hard to find these days)...
I know bunch of you guys would tell me to backup my data, but i don't have External hard drive (they are pretty expensive in my Country), I have some friend who could borrow me External HDD, but they have their data on it, and they mostly use windows.. I did not use Time Machine yet, but i think probably it would format HDD on Macs partitions, so, i will do it on my own guys (don't judge me about that guys please)..
So if someone could answer me that, i will really appreciate that.
    Thank you, and best Regards!!

I recommend you upgrade your RAM to at least 8 GB for good performance with the apps you're using. Also keep a minimum of 25-30 GB of free space on your boot drive for optimal system and application performance.
The maximum RAM a 7.1 iMac can address is 6GB, the OP can keep one of the 2GB DIMMs and then add a matching 4GB DIMM. If  the OP decides to do this, please only purchase from Crucial or OWC at www.MacSales.com.
However as described on a 8 year old iMac, I'd stay with Mavericks and then when considering upgrading upgrade to a more up-to-date Mac.

Shouldn't be having a problem, then. That's the version for ML. Try taking your question to the Safari forum - https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/safari - that's where all the Safari experts hang out.

Hi, first thing I would do is try connecting the Sanyo to another Mac.
On your Mac try going the SMC route:- http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/302002-reset-system-management-controller-sm c.html
Try another connecting cable - Look on the FAQ (Sanyo Site)->http://sanyo.com/xacti/english/products/vpc_fh1a/index.html..........L

  • Mac Mini (Intel C2D) boots up 1 hour after shut down

Roughtly one hour after I shut down my Mac Mini (i.e. LED on the front is off), it boots up again with the chime and everything. This happens at every time of the day and is reproducable. I have not set any schedules (in Energy Saver) and "wake for administrator access" is off too.
I tried to narrow down the problem by disconnecting every single cable on the back. Only disconnecting the power brick helped
It's pretty annoying wen I go to bed and the Mac mini boots up just for the **** of it waking me up with a loud chime. I can barely hear it when it's running so I just keep it on for the night until that problem is solved. Any ideas?

  • 24" C2D Airport Issues

    Hi All-
I've seen many posts relating to all sorts of airport/intel problems, but none that specifically seem to duplicate my own and was wondering if anyone had any caveats aside from waiting for an update from Apple. I'm currently, and preferentially, hardwired to my home network so this is based on principle, not out of necessity. I turn on the airport card in the iMac and am greeted with 8-10 wireless networks in range- one of them being my own. Of all the networks that the iMac can 'see' I can connect to all the open networks without a problem. However my own always gets an error, "there was an error joining this wireless network." I have several other devices that connect to this network without issue (tivos, ibook, airport express, pc laptop...) and unless there is some software issue or perhaps a hardware issue with the new card in the iMacs, this doesn't make any sense. I have a westell dsl wireless router (supplied by my ISP) that is configured for MAC address filtering but is otherwise open- I'm sure that I've added the MAC addresses of the iMac! It operates @ 802.11b and g for the assorted devices and that's about all I can think at the moment in terms of setup. Thanks for any help.
    iMac 24" 2.16Ghz Intel C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have solved my problem. There is an incompatibility with all Intel iMacs with Airport cards and the Verizon Online supplied equipment, the Westell Versa Link 327W. Quoted from CNET:
"Several different wireless connection issues are plaguing users, but so far only one of the issues has a fix. If you aren't able to connect to your wireless network and you're using a Westell Versalink 327W router, then that's the problem. The Intel iMac doesn't seem to be compatible with it, so you'll need to switch to one from a different maker. An AirPort Express Base Station is pricey but will certainly do the trick"
Thanks to everyone that looked. I knew I wasn't crazy .

  • What is default terminal setting for "safe sleep" for iMac C2D

I happened to use a widget for "deep sleep" which frankly I decided I did not need. Of course, after trashing same per the widget directions - the widget had changed a "setting" effecting sleep on the computer. Silly me.
There was an article in MacWorld last fall about "3" being the safe sleep mode to set a laptop (recent) from the terminal command line...but no reference to the iMac .
    http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macosxhints/2006/10/sleepmode/index.php
Not a major crisis, just want to set the "sleep code" number back to how the unit shipped from Apple!
    Michael
iMac Intel C2D 2.16 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   1 GB RAM, Printer HPC3180, Sounds SticksII-Z Harman Kardon

When I had the widget installed, I set it for "deep sleep" if I recall properly. After deciding to trash the widget and its preference file, I noticed that when I put the computer to sleep via the "apple" menu - the light on the monitor quickly went out entirely.
Although I could still "rouse" the computer the by tapping the keyboard etc., the wake up process was extremely slow - in fact, the computer opened up to a gray version of the desktop ...followed by a progress bar...which when completed...opened the desktop to its full Apple glory.
Perhaps, the widget set the computer to the hibernate mode - etc. I actually set the computer back to "0" via the terminal command...but since I didn't know the original default setting, I thought I'd ask...and sadly, I could not find the answer anywhere...hence the query to Apple users.
    Thanks for the info, though.

    My Problem
Immediately after installation, my will have lots of citrical errors and many times, the monitor just went blank and PC restart.
    What I have done:
Updated BIOS to 1.6. THE SAME PROBLEM.
I suspect that it was the RAM, so using only 1x 512MB RAM, that system was Stable. (For Both my RAM – thus, RAM was good)
That makes me suspect that the MOBO. So I place Both the RAM from DIMM Slot 1 & 3 to Slot 2 & 4. The System was Stable.
Back to Slot 1 & 3, THE SAME PROBLEM.
To me, confirmed MOBO faulty and went to change the MOBO.
With the NEW MOBO (same model), THE SAME PROBLEM.
Now I am running my System with RAM in Slot 2 & 4 for 1 week and the System is Stable.
Can someone advise me what the problem? What if in the future I need to add more RAM?
    Thanks

  • Intel iMac airport connection problems

    Hello,
My new intel iMac connected up to my 802.11g 3come wireless modem/router fine, the strength in excellent (always full or nearly full) but the connection is very very intermittent.
It will only work for a minute or so but then the internet will go down on the machine for about 30 seconds, then come back on.
The network file sharing also goes down. Other Windows PCs on the network do not have this problem.
I have tried the following, none has had any effect:
[*]Turning off all other network PCs
[*]Disabling all encryption on the router
    [*]Using different browsers
[*]Calling Apple support - first they asked me to adjust some networking options, we also setup a new network connection. They then sent me a replacement iMac - it's exactly the same
The firmware is up-to-date on the router.
I am aware there are similar posts in the forum, but other people's problems seem to be to do with their speed. None of the solutions have helped.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your support.
    Davood

I wasted hours and hours trying to figure out a similar problem with my machine. Apple Support denied all knowledge of known issues, but then I came across a discussion titled "Will Apple react to the Airport problem with the new iMac (Intel C2D)?" - you will find it on the 5th page (at the moment) of these topics.
It is one of the largest threads I have seen in these forums (113 replies). I tried to add an update, but curiously the thread is now locked - Apple are obviously keen to censor further discussion on the subject.
Apple do now acknowledge that there is a problem with Airport and the Intel-based Macs. They are supposedly working on a fix, but when that will come is not clear.
I would urge everyone with Airport issues to pester Apple Support until they solve this problem.

after playing with it a bit, turns out the problem is with the
SelectivePalette.plugin that gets installed. when you remove that photoshop will work.. the filters will work as well, sorta.. you choose and effect, and apply it, nothing happens. however if you use the PS command last filter command + f it applies what it should have.
    strange.

In fact T5750 means Core 2 Duo 2GHz with 2MB cache and 667 Mhz bus, is better to close search with T5750 if it is the specific processor, if not simply with 2Ghz do the work
The only way is asking to vendor or another owner of the your lenovo model required, tell them that read the "TYPE" code, starts with 0769-XXX which XXX is a letters and/or numbers that specify your model required

  • HDTV +mac book HD Content

    Hello All
I thought to experiment with viewing HD Content on my Panasonic TV
    (TX-32LZD80-Widescreen-1080p) using my Macbook Intel C2D 2GHZ 1.5GB RAM.
I have a mini-dvi to VGA connector and this didn't do the trick entirely.
I mean the resolution options where not 1080p ( i think the maximum was 1200 or 1600 something and the Apple BBC HD Content wasn't that HD
    So.. my questions are:
    1) If i use the Mini-DVI to DVI and a DVI to HDMI connection instead will it give me FULL HD 1920x1080 resolution in the display preferences??
    2) Is there any improvement of this setup as opposed to the mini-DVI to VGA connection?
    thanks for your help

    Hi Tenacity
I finally did figure it out, but they should remove the "support" word from this forum as the least you get from certain users here is support
    anyhow.
I connected the macbook to the TV through a Min-DVI -> DVI -> HDMI lead.
The TV reports 1080p whilst the mac reports 1080i god knows which one is right
the content i watched from apple's website seemed HD.
