Intel chips and Macs

Hi,
I've been a happy Mac user for 3 years and love my Power Book G4. I'd like to buy a Power Mac G5, but am thinking of waiting until the ones with Intel chips are ready. Has any developer out there tested these machines? Regretfully, I need to use several programs for research that are only available for a PC and don't want to resort to using Virtual PC. I did find some open source programs that are similar but my boss doesn't like the output. Is it likely that this software will run on a Mac with Intel chips?

There is DARWINE being worked on right now for the MacTels
http://darwine.opendarwin.org//
And you could be waiting the longest for a PowerMacTel machine, because the G5 chip is very good bang for the processor buck right now and there isn't a space/heat issue like there is for say laptops.
Also a LOT of software will have to be reworked for MacTels, so early adopters won't be able to run the majority of PPC G5 based software, even though some have recompiled and are ready to go already.
VPC supposedly only uses one processor (nice of Microsoft to do that), so unless your PC based programs are not to heavy they should run fine on the PPC PowerMac G5.

I am upgrading from Tiger to SL in a MCBPro with 2 gb ram and an intel chip and I get the following notice:  Installation failed.... THE INSTALLER COULD NOT COPY THE NCESSARY SUPPORT FILES. Any help is appreciated...

Yes.   I've found that works best.  Especially if the drive is external, since external connections are typically slower, and Spotlight loves to eat up space going back and forth.   Time Machine will eat up as much space as it can, and typically needs drives at least twice the size of the original hard drive that is being backed up, if being backed up in full.   So unfortunately there is a lot of empty space that is needed for smooth operation.

  • Is there a conflict with the Intel chip and certain web content?

    Just curious about something...
Somewhat new to OSX...I'm noticing that certain video content,(specifically Comedy Central) won't play for me in Safari, or Firefox browsers. I have Windows Media Player 9, but the plug in or application won't launch when these clips come up. I've noticed on some Power PC machines the clips play in Safari and appear formatted for Quick Time.(Despite the site saying they're designed to play in Media Player 9) Is there some preference that I don't know about? Also how do I install and uninstall plugins for these browsers? Or is it just the Intel chip...I haven't had a problem with any other site but this one.
    Thanks.

Web content not displaying will never be a hardware issue with any computer. You must install the plugins necessary to view it. All plugins are Universal now, except Windows Media, but you can get the Universal beta.
Windows Media - either use Ho Lee's suggestion or download Flip4Mac Universal beta (look on Google).
Real Media - get RealPlayer 10 Universal Binary.
The Flash Player and Quicktime should already be installed. Make sure you have all Apple updates as well.

  • New intel chips, and Logic Pro 7

How well does logic pro 7 run on the new intel chip sets?

According to users on the Logic forum here, Logic Pro 7.2 and above (the Universal Binary release of Logic) works very well on Intel Mac. Anything below 7.2 is PowerPC only, and will work very poorly on an Intel Mac, if it works at all.

  • Does Motion 2 work with Intel chip and or Tiger 10.4.10

I am having a problem with my Motion 2.01 crashing when I open anything. I have come to believe it is a problem with the Intel chip in my new computer or my fully upgraded Tiger OS because I have gotten it to work on an older computer without the chip or updated OS. Has anone experienced this problem and if so what can be done about it? Please help! Thanks. -Michael-

The problem is with the Intel processor and not the OS. You'll have to go to Final Cut Studio 2 and Motion 3 in order to work in your Intel-Mac. Check the System requirements before doing so, if this is your intention.

  • Logic7.2 , Intel Chip and the Emagic a62m A/D Card

Hello: Before I install the Driver for Emagic's External USB Analog/Digital Card, Model "a62m", does anybody know how well it's working with Logic7.2 and the new Intel Chip ? Thanx, MLR ... ps ... The Driver and others can be Downloaded at http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/emagic/DriverFiles/OS%20X%20Drivers/

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

  • HP w/Intel Chip and Screen Saver

My wife's computer is an "entry level" HP (I don't have the model here) with an all-in-one motherboard, using an Intel Chip for video display
For some reason (I suspect a Windoze update) her screen save no longer consistently starts as it should
I am going to check at HP to see if they have a driver update (also at Intel for the chip model) but my question...
With an LCD monitor, is there any "burn-in" danger to the monitor screen if the screen saver does not run?
If yes, my next step if I can't find a driver update at HP or Intel is to find out if the motherboard has a video card slot, and buy a separate video card so the motherboard chip is "laid to rest" and a different driver is controlling the video process

    Hi,
OK...I remember now...mostly I was reading about TV and not computer monitors...about the break-in period...  but the LCD characteristics involving image retention are similar...though more on monitors than TV as TV usually has a lot of image movement...  Here's the best description I can find, and Wiki has more, but this is best I think...
    Image Sticking
What is Image Sticking? What Causes Image Sticking?
Image persistence,         image burn-in, and image sticking are terms used to describe LCD  image         retention. LCD image retention occurs when a fixed pattern is  displayed         over a prolonged period of time. The fixed pattern causes a  parasitic         capacitance build up within the LCD component, which prevents  the liquid         crystal molecules from returning to their normal relaxed state.
All LCDs/CRTs         and color plasma displays are susceptible to image retention, at  varying         degrees. Phosphor based display devices, such as CRTs and color  plasma         displays are most susceptible, and image retention on phosphor  based         devices is often irreversible. Transmissive devices, such as  LCDs are         less susceptible, and in most cases LCD image retention can be  reversed.
The rate of image sticking depends on the image pattern,  duration of         fixed image, the temperature, and production variations.  Likewise, the         rate of diffusion of the image sticking (recovery time) also  depends         on these factors.
What Can Be Done about It?
The best way to avoid image         burn-in is to limit the amount of static content on the display.  Image         sticking may be avoided by turning the display off periodically  for a         period of time between 24 to 48 hours.
To reduce the possibility of image         retention, we recommend:
Displaying alternating black/white images for           48 to 72 hours (our Technical Support Team can provide the  software)
Power down the unit for a period of time (minimum 24 to 48  hours)
Use           a screen saver when the touchmonitor is not in use
Image retention caused         by static (non-moving) images displayed for lengthy periods  (image burn-in)         is not covered under Elo warranty.

    Hi,
When you say you get an error message running the MacOS x installer disc, is it when you boot on the CD or when you insert the disc in your SuperDrive during an open session? Have you tried booting from the CD and running the Apple Hardware Test? From your list of trouble, it looks like a bad RAM, or maybe a corrup hard drive sector, but it could be something else entirely. Next time you boot, try verbose (press Command-V right after the gong), you'll see every step of boot on screen, it'll give some indication as to what makes your MBP hang up. You can also try to run AppleJack in Single-User mode (first install AppleJack ; download from here :  http://applejack.sourceforge.net/ ; install as admin is required ; boot in SU by pressing Command-S at the gong): it's done wonders on my machine more than once...
"Oh, one more thing"... Is there anything connected to your MBP via USB/Firewire/Bluetooth? If so, try and unplug/disconnect everything, then boot up, just so we can rule a bad driver out.

  • Intel Binary and Mac Store codesign

I have a stub project that consists of a few xtras and the following bit of movie script code:
    on startMovie
      _player.searchPathList = [the applicationPath & the applicationName & ":Contents:Resources:"]
      _player.searchPathList.add(the applicationPath & the applicationName & ":Contents:Resources:Branding:")
      _player.searchPathList.add(the applicationPath & the applicationName & ":Contents:Resources:Zoomups:")
      _movie.go(1, "main")
    end
This stub is how we've always done our Mac builds, just adding some files to the .app in the Contents/Resources folder, from a windows build, and it's all good.  Then the Mac App Store came about and this recent Director update allowing us to build Intel-only binaries for the store.  The problem arises during the codesign step for the Mac Store.  If I build my stub as Universal Binary, the codesign process is fine, and we can submit the app fine, but of course it's rejected because of the universal binary.  When I build the stub as Intel Binary, the codesign process fails with the error:
codesign_allocate: the __LINKEDIT segment does not cover the end of the file (can't be processed) in: (*path to the .app*) object file format unrecognized, invalid, or unsuitable  ?
Has anyone figured a way around this?  I'm stuck at this point.

Did you figure this out?  I wonder if I can apply the same solution for an AIR project

  • Relative Noise Output of Intel iMac and Mac Pro

I run a computer based recording studio. I have been using a Powerbook for the last two or so years and I am thinking of upgrading to an iMac or Mac Pro.
However, noise is a sensitive issue for me. I have enjoyed near silence with the Powerbook, which enables me to hear into every aspect of my sound. I would like to continue enjoying that experience with an iMac or Mac Pro and wondered whether you could tell me how quiet these machines are? And whether there are any stats on the noise output of the Mac range?
    Regards,
    Stuart

I'm sure there were some noise figures published once for the G5 and MacPro but I've had a quick look and can't find them on the Apple site anymore.
In my experience the G5 is actually quite quiet compared with say a PC Workstation - that is until the Fans ramp up during heavy processing at which point it does get quite noisy. I expect the MacPro is similar in this respect.
    Hope that helps a bit.

  • Install intel chip on older mac?

I have an older imac, pre-Intel chip, and I want to know if I can install the Intel chip in it to make it capable of supporting Leopard operating system and the new Intel chip applications.
    Thanks for your help!

No, you cannot install an intel chip.
But you can install Leopard, just not Snow Leopard.

  • Is the upgrade to the 2.33 Ghz Intel chip worth it?

I am going to be buying my first Mac very soon. It will be an iMac and I will use it primarily to power a digital darkroom using PhotoShop initially. Later I may use either Apeture or LightRoom, once they get past version 1 and up to version 2. (I don't care to be on the bleeding edge of software.) I will also use it to manage my music collections using iTunes. I may also use it to run Windows if I can't find suitable Mac versions of certain software, but I think most of my Windows stuff will stay on my Dell laptop. Hopefully, I will keep the iMac a 100% Mac.
Apple charges an extra $250 for the 2.33 Ghz Intel chip and I am wondering what that buys besides an increase of .17 Ghz in speed??? Will it signficatly increase performance using PhotoShop or other image processing software?
    I am NOT a gamer.
Your thoughts on this are appreciated, especially if you have experience with the differences.

Dell   Windows XP   I will be buying an iMac soon to use as a digital darkroom.

a new iMac will still beat the pants off of my buddy's old G5.
Don't like to disillusion you, but my experience has been that this is not something you should count on. I have both a G5 iMac (@ 1.8 Ghtz) and an Intel iMac (@ 2 Ghtz), both with 2 GB of RAM.
The Intel version runs Apple's apps and the Finder noticeably faster than does the G5, because they're "universal binaries" which will run "native" on the Intel. However, many major apps -- for instance, Microsoft Office, Photoshop and most other Adobe products -- are still Power PC apps which run on the Intel version under the Rosetta translator. They're generally about the same speed as on the G5.
My main reason for buying the Intel iMac was to run Windows XP under Parallels, so that I could get decent speed on two Windows-only apps that I need for business. I used to run them, very very slowly, using Virtual PC. They now run more or less full speed -- what a difference. But without this need, I would not UPGRADE yet from a G5 to an Intel, I'd wait until Microsoft and/or Adobe upgrade their products.

  • Can a 2006 iMac with an Intel chip run OS X Mavericks?

My daughter has a 2006 iMac with an Intel chip and 3 gigs of RAM. She's been told it can't run Mavericks. Is this true? Or, is there something missing from her configuration we can add to enable Mavericks? Thanks!

Hi, Ralph. That's very helpful. I did look and discovered that Apple lists my daughter's iMac from 2006 as not able to run Mavericks.
I'll be looking at it later, when I have it in front of me, and I'm going to look for EFI firmware, and at least the latest OS it can run. But it looks like a new Mac is in her future, considering her web use includes streaming video. And because the security updates issue for older Macs is a concern.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Intel chip

I am a video editor who needs to encode multiple bit rate WMV files. Unfortunately, Windows media Encoder is the only software that does this so I must use a PC. With the new Intel Chips in Macs will it be possible to run Windows Media Encoder natively on the OS?
    Thanks,

    Hi Curtis;
No. The Intel chip is running OS X and not Windows so it will not be able to execute Windows Media Encoder.

  • Updgrade to the new Intel chip

I ordered my IMac G5 on November 30th. and received it on December 7th.
When less than a month later I saw the new intel chip and ILife version I got angry to Apple customer service for not telling me about this change.
Is there anything I can do to upgrade my Mac?
    Thanks,
    Adrian

    Hi Adrian;
When you ordered the iMac G5 you had certain plans for it. With the announcement of the Intel iMac, what is your iMac G5 not doing for you now?
Or is this more a matter of envy, you iMac G5 is no longer the newest thing?
If you most have the latest and greatest, you can always sell it on eBay and order the new Intel iMac.
It is your call but if it is doing what you bought it to do, I personally would ignore the fact that is the latest and greatest and just use it.
