Intel chips in power Macs?

I'm thinking of getting a Power Mac G5 sometime soon - maybe a quad.
What I'm wondering is this: if Apple are switching to intel chips for their iMac range, does this mean that logically they will in future be used across the board, including in the Power Macs?
I know that software such as Photoshop and Final Cut is now being reconfigured to run on intel based systems - could this mean future problems for users who are stuck with powerPC chips, or will the two systems exist side-by-side?

If you can wait, wait and see whats out there, Apple reported that all Apple computer will switch over to intel by the end of this year and if you can hold out until then, you might find something that would be right for you and maybe it will run your apps better and faster, as for myself I'm in the same boat, still debating over weather or not getting the PPC PowerMac Quad or Intel MacPro G6 (if thay call it that). I'm going to wait and see whats out there before I buy a new Mac because you never know what apple might release with the PowerMac like front row w/ controller sense apple is already doing it with MacBook Pro notebook. You might alot more stuff with your PowerMac.
And here is something to think about Intel is also making a Quad Core chip and it should be release by 2007. Some people will say if you need a computer then get a computer and other will say wait, it all depends on you and what your going to do with it once you have it, So good luck to you whatever your going to decide
on your computer needs.

No, you cannot install an intel chip.
But you can install Leopard, just not Snow Leopard.

New Mac Pro (Intel) booting a Power Mac (PC) OS

I have the newest version of the Mac Pro G5 and I'd like to know.... if by installing the OS drive from the older PC based G5, can I still access it as a mountable drive and more importantly, can I make it a bootable drive and boot from it, running the older OS ?
The old drive is running 10.5.8.... it's going into the latest Mac Pro G5. My instincts tell me "no" but it sure would be convenient while I grab some things from my older drive.

Welcome and hope you get a lot of fun and enjoyment from your Intel Mac!
No way can you boot from a G5 OS, even the Apple Partition Table has been known to cause trouble, or the presence of the OS.
The Mac Pro is never called by or use "G5" which refers to 5th generation PowerPC.
Best bet is pull the data you want off the drive and initialize it.
Also, using migration assistant is well known for causing so much trouble and mischief, strongly recommended not to use it for apps, just your data, media and preference files (mail, web etc) and do clean install of your apps.

Even if most apps are Universal Binary, it doesn't take much, not worth the savings, if you do go against instinct, I'd actually make backup images / clones first. May as well get a good backup set with SuperDuper to start off on right foot.
The newest Mac Pro (Intel, Xeon processor "Nehalem"). And your Mac will come with 10.6.2+ build. It would be a stretch (of the imagination) to boot properly.

Can I install Mac OS 10.4.7 CD's meant for an imac intel chip (Jan 2007)??

Can I install Mac OS 10.4.7 CD's that came from an imac intel chip (Jan 2007) ONTO an ibook power pc G3? The ibook only has a CD drive and I believe the OS installs are CD's not DVD's as there are 2 of them. The ibook currently is running OS 10.3.9 with 23 GB on the HD at the moment. I may be able to free up some space though by dumping Microsoft Office. I know for sure I had 10.4.7 on there before but I got a used HD and there is only 10.3.9 on it. Sigh.

I got a gigadesign 1.467 single processor upgrade for my tired 'ol G4 466 about a year ago. I paid around $450 at the time and now they have a 1.8 single for $299!
I have zero bad things to say about the upgrade. Easy to install (although a little nerve wracking!) and it's been running hassle free ever since. It's given me the juice to take advantage of Space Designer as well as keeping up with my CPU sucking Native Instruments software.
I did plenty of research as far as compatibility before comitting to the upgrade and have had zero issues.
Obviously a new computer is the next step but that processor upgrade has kept me chugging along enough to stay in the game thus far.

Intel chips and Macs

I've been a happy Mac user for 3 years and love my Power Book G4. I'd like to buy a Power Mac G5, but am thinking of waiting until the ones with Intel chips are ready. Has any developer out there tested these machines? Regretfully, I need to use several programs for research that are only available for a PC and don't want to resort to using Virtual PC. I did find some open source programs that are similar but my boss doesn't like the output. Is it likely that this software will run on a Mac with Intel chips?

And you could be waiting the longest for a PowerMacTel machine, because the G5 chip is very good bang for the processor buck right now and there isn't a space/heat issue like there is for say laptops.
Also a LOT of software will have to be reworked for MacTels, so early adopters won't be able to run the majority of PPC G5 based software, even though some have recompiled and are ready to go already.
VPC supposedly only uses one processor (nice of Microsoft to do that), so unless your PC based programs are not to heavy they should run fine on the PPC PowerMac G5.

Okay looks like I didn't understand the format for these questions. I have used my Mac BookPro almost exclusively for work and my Power Mac for my home recording studio but now want the Power Mac to be a second computer for my work. So I need to upgrade to Lion and install office 2011. So, considering my subject line, any help offered is appreciated.

The max OS for all Macs with a PowerPC processor is Leopard OS 10.5.x.
If you are going to consider getting a newer, but used, Mac, here's the requirements for Lion.
Lion 10.7 System Requirements
    •    Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor (most models released since late 2006 - early Intel-based Macs with Core Solo or Core Duo processors aren't compatible)
    •    2GB of memory (recommend at least 4GB -- and ideally even more, as you'll see benefits in many computing tasks)
    •    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended) for Lion download from Apple App Store; or Leopard 10.5.x if using Lion on USB drive
    •    7GB of available space (10GB recommended)

Fileshare between my Mac Pro Quad Core Intel Xeon (64-bit) & Power Mac 9600

I want to make my Power Macintosh 9600/233 (Mac OS 9) a shared computer with my Mac Pro Quad Core Intel Xeon (64-bit)(Mac OS 10.6.6). I am using a Netopia Model 3346N-VGx DSL Ethernet Managed Switch to network with my Samsung printer and the Mac Book Pro.
I also have a Power PC G4 (Mac OS 10.5.8) connected (via a Ziplinq 48" Retractable Crossover Network Cable) to a Farallon EtherWave 10 Base-T AAUI Transceiver, which in turn is connected to the Netopia, from which I can share files. All of this is ethernet connectivity.
I thought I could connect my 9600 using the same method as for the G4 or by connecting the ethernet cable from the 9600 directly into the Mac Pro Quad Core. However, neither of these methods work.
An additional stumbling block is that I have not used this 9600 for several years and am not sure of its account name. I'm fairly certain of its password. But because I don't have a second monitor for this machine, I can't muddle my way in.
My questions:
1. What might be a network solution to this dilemma?
2. Or, do I need to get another monitor for this computer and leave it un-networked and just transfer files manually?
3. Or, would whatever hard drives are in the 9600 be transferable into the networked G4 or the main Mac Pro? (not sure what they are.)
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Without a monitor on the 9600, almost none. At the very least you'll need to configure the server with appropriate network settings for your environment, and that can't be done headless.
You might only need a display for long enough to setup the network, but you'll need one all the same.
Once the network is configured your options are either AFP or FTP, but I'm not even sure the old version of AFP is supported anymore, which means you may need to fire up an FTP client on the 9600 and push the files to your MacPro.

As mentioned above, you're going to need a monitor at the very least to configure the network settings. I'd be inclined to say at that point you might as well copy the files off any way you can and put the 9600 to rest. If you're really, really fortunate and the 9600 has a CD burner I'd probably use that and count myself lucky

The 9600 shipped with SCSI drives, which no current Mac support (at least without a SCSI card), so there's no way to remove the drive from the 9600 and attach it directly to the MacPro.

'Tis a common problem on old Macs.
Do as Allan says: open the door and blow out all the dust bunnies. Canned air from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack can be handy (though sort of expensive) especially for blowing through the back of the power supply. A cool Mac is a happy Mac.
Be sure your Mac can breathe. The air intake is on the bottom of the case, so be sure a deep pile rug or too many papers on your desk are not blocking the air supply.
Feel the power supply and the processor with your hand. They should be warm but not hot; if you have to move your hand away, that's too hot!
Check the fan on the power supply, and on the processor if it has one. Take a flashlight and peer in the back of the (Mac) case through the grille; make sure the fan is turning. If it's not, the power supply won't work for long.
Fans are not considered serviceable, though they will succumb to mechanics of determination. A CPU fan is easy and straightforward.
A fan replacement will not cure an already damaged power supply; the PS may already be done for. Used power supplies for a DA are hard to come by, and not especially cheap when found (c.$50). An entire working DA or Quicksilver may often be found for under $100 on eBay, and swapping in your HD is easy and simple... this might be cheaper and more expeditious than repairing an expired DA. Replacing a power supply is fairly easy, but it's a nuisance and requires a 2mm Allen head wrench in addition to the usual #2 Phillips head screwdriver.
In my experience, power supplies and CPUs are about equally likely to fail. There are a few other possibilities, but they are not nearly so common.

I have Final Cut Studio V1 - the PPC/Intel V5/5.1 cross-grade version, which would suit your requirements perfectly. (I have it for sale at present down here).
If you keep looking, you're sure to find a similar second hand copy in your area, without the need to upgrade your graphics card.
I'd go for Final Cut Pro as above over any version of Express. FCP has the full version of LiveType - not the truncated version that was released later on.

Hi, I have a Davis Vantage Pro weather station that ran happily on my old Quicksilver Power Mac. Now I have upgraded to a Mac pro machine running Tiger, the 'Weatherlink' software won't work. Davis, a main player in scientific technologies have not upgraded their Mac software (unbelievably!)
Will Rosetta help here? .... or do I need to get a P.C?

PPC apps run transparently on Intel Macs, however, in your case it may be a matter of incompatibility. The software is simply not compatible with the current versions of OS X. This has nothing to do with Rosetta. You would have the same problem on your QuickSilver were you to upgrade to Tiger.
If you transferred the software using Migration Assistant, then try reinstalling the software on the Intel Mac (but first be sure you fully uninstall the transferred app.)
