Intel core 2 duo vs intel core duo

is it possible to upgrade from a 32-bit processor to a 64-bit processor w/o having to purchase a new laptop? if so, about how much would it be to do so?

Unfortunately, the Core Duo is a 32 bit processor. The Core 2 Duo processors are the first 64 bit processors used in the MacBooks. I'm not really sure why they used the Core Duos as the Core 2 Duos were really just around the corner... I guess it was just to get them out. In the real world, right now... there is really no significant performance difference between 32 & 64 bit machines (for the average user anyway). If you plan to keep your current machine, bumping your memory from 512MB to 1 or 2GB would help you out tons.
What specific application are you having difficulty with. I'm guessing there is a fairly easy resolution. If you had an application that ran on 64 bit only, I expect you would know it as those are few and far-between and would be for very specific needs.
Also... if you can let us know the exact message your getting.. .that may help a bit as well.

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Question: I want to update to the new LION OSX, but it says that I need to at least have an Intel Core 2 Duo. When I click "about this Mac," it says that I have a 2.16 Intel Core Duo. Is there a difference between the "Core 2 Duo" and the "Core Duo"?

Well, my title basically asks the question that I am seeking an answer for. Im not sure what year my MB Pro is, and I cant exactly find it on the Apple site. Its a 2.16 Intel Core Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. All I see (dating back to 2007,) is Intel Core 2 Duo on the apple site. Im pretty sure (but not 100% positive,) that my MB Pro is a late 2008/early 2009. Just trying to figure out if I can install LION OSX or not, since it requires atleast intel core 2 duo, and mine says I only have the intel core duo. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Core Duo is 32 bit processor and Core 2 Duo is 64 bit processor
OS X Lion, will only on 64 bit Intel processor Mac's.
The following Mac's that have 32 bit Intel “Yonah” processorsthat won't run OS X Lion.
    iMac 4,1 Early (Jan-Sept) 2006 17"
    iMac 4,1 Early (Jan-Sept) 2006 20"
    iMac 4,2 Mid (July-Sept) 2006 17"
    Mac Mini 1,1 (Feb-Sept) Early 2006
    Mac Mini 1,1 (Sept-Aug) Late 2006
    MacBook 1,1 13" (May-Nov 2006)
    MacBook Pro 1,1 15" A1150 (Jan-May 2006)
    MacBook Pro 1,2 17" A1151 (Aprl-Oct 2006)
    MacBook Pro 1,1 15" A1175 (May-Oct 2006)
There is a difference between “Intel Core Duo” and “IntelCore 2 Duo” processors.
Look under your Apple menu > About this Mac > more information for the details

  • Difference between Intel Core Duo and Intel Core 2 Duo

I bought my MBP in November of last year, before the update on the Pros. However, it says about the new Pros that they have Intel Core 2 Duo processors, which are faster than the Intel Core Duos of previous MBPs. I know I bought mine before they updated them, but my "About This Mac" says that mine has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. So, did they update the processors before this latest update, or do have one of the new Macbooks somehow, or what happened? And, is there any difference between my 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo?

Only the original Intel machines came with Core Duo processors. The principal difference is that Core Duos are 32-bit and Core 2 Duos are 64-bit processors. There were also increases in available clock speed, L2 cache, and frontside bus speed. The first models only addressed 2 GBs of RAM. Later models had a different memory controller that enabled 3 GBs of user accessible RAM (4 GBs installed) and even later models such as yours had a memory controller that enabled accessing 4 GBs of RAM (4 GBs installed.)
The first Intel Minis came with a Core Solo processor which had only one core instead of two.

  • Upgrade Intel Core Duo iMac to Core 2 Duo?

I know that, in theory a Merom processor is compatible with a motherboard made for a Yonah CPU, which is what's in the original Intel iMacs. However, I know that most Wintel laptops require a BIOS flash in order to support the newer processor.
My question: do you think it will be possible for us to upgrade to the Core 2 Duo from the Core Duo? Will the speed increase be worth it? From what I've read, Merom is not that much faster than Yonah, but has anyone seen anything different?

    Hello,
People have installed them in the Mac Mini CoreSolo and CoreDuo without a BIOS or Firmware update. So, it should be fine doing the same in the iMac CoreDuo.
The CPU is in a socket in the iMac CoreDuo, so installation should not be a problem (if you don't mind dismantling your computer and voiding your warranty).
Reports have varied on the speed difference. But, you do gain 64-BIT capabilities with Merom. Otherwise, Merom's specs are very similar to Yonah, so the gains are only going to come from optimized routines. Raw processing power probably isn't much different and the bus speed is the same.
At this point in time, you're going to pay a lot for a new Merom chip. So, the cost benefit probably isn't there for an upgrade. But, as they become common and new versions arrive, the chips will probably drop a bit in price and make the upgrade more cost effective.
    I hope this helps.

what was the previous problem you had with the mobo for which you needed a BIOS update?

  • What's the difference between the Core 2 Duo and the Core Duo

I recently bought a new Macbook (Original) with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
I gave my old one to my younger cousin. It has just an Intel Core Duo processor.
    What does that "2" mean?
Does it mean the processor is faster?
I was guessing it means that I can have more RAM (because this can hold 4 GB instead of 2 GB, like my previous Macbook)...
Both these Macbooks have only 1 GB of RAM, yet the new one seems MUCH faster. The only real difference in technical specs is the processor. Could the processor be responsible for the much faster computer, or is it simply because it's a new computer?
    Thanks!

Part of that has to do with the chipsets, although I've heard that some of the Intel chipsets work with both the Core Duo and the earlier Core 2 Duo.
The Core Duo is the dual-processor version of the Core processor.
The Core 2 Duo is the dual-processor version of the newer generation Core 2 processor.
The Core 2 series is more advanced. They likely are produced on faster semiconductor processes in smaller "geometries". I think part of it is a higher operating clock speed, but it could also include advances in processing power where it takes fewer average clock cycles to complete certain instructions. There could be things like more pipelines, faster/more arithmetic logic units, and other architectural improvements that makes it work faster overall even without clock-speed increases.

  • Core 2 Duo vs. Core Duo

Hi. What is the difference between Core 2 Duo vs. Core Duo? Is one better than the other? Does one lend itself better to a HTPC application?

Core Duo is very old technology. The 1st MacBook's (in 2006) were Core Duo.
    See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core
Unlike the Intel Core, Intel Core 2 is a 64-bit processor, supporting Intel 64. Another difference
between the original Core Duo and the new Core 2 Duo is an increase in the amount of Level 2 cache.
The new Core 2 Duo has tripled the amount of on-board cache to 6 MB.

The Westmere is a improved variation of the nehalem. With great price performance ratio.
Westmare allow for 12 cores. The Westmere has 3 times faster AES, pages up to 1GB, and improved VMX. (better encryption and virtualization)
With two more cores, there is one third more heat. To compensate for more heat the processor runs at a slightly slower speed. You still get better performance; because you have more cores. When not all cores are in use, the other cores can actually run faster then the chip is rated.

  • Core Image and Intel GMA950 graphics processor

Does the Intel GMA950 graphics processor support Core Image?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

And it's fast! (contrary to lots of the bad hype about integrated graphics sucking.) Intel and Apple did their homework on these minis.

I have a late 2008 Mac Pro Quad Core 2x2.8 Intel Xeon with Lion 10.7.5… do I need Maverick and will this hardware support the Airplay Mirroring?

It doesn't mention anything about a Mac Pro. So no.

If your computer did support it, you would still need 10.8 or 10.9 for Airplay to work.

  • Mac Mini Intel 512MB 1.83MHz Intel Core Duo totally useless after update

After performing an update of a Mac Mini 1.83MHz Intel Core Duo with 512MB of RAM, the system no longer functions.
The system will boot up and display the desktop, but all of the accessories in the upper-right corner (Date, Volume Control, Eject, etc.) never show up. All it does up there is display solid white, then it doesn't display anything (just displays the menu bar regular background color).
QuickTime automatically launches on startup, and it appears to stay up until I click on QuickTime and select "Preferences", then it closes.
The only other application that launches is iTunes. I can't get ANYTHING else to launch, including Safari, Terminal and Console. I can't even get "About this Macintosh" to come up. It's lucky I set this particular system up some time ago to accept SSH connections, otherwise I don't know how I would be able to see what's going on. I can SSH into the system from another system (another Mini as it turns out). It's with this that I can see what's going on.
I looked at "top" and I keep seeing "ReportCrash" starting up, running for a few seconds, then terminating and then relaunching with another process ID. Evidently something is crashing and it's trying to report the crash, but it can't complete the process.
I looked at the Software Update Logs (located at /Library/Logs), and here is what it says it updated last night:
    2008-04-24 23:16:38 -0700: Installed "QuickTime" (7.4.5)
    2008-04-24 23:19:09 -0700: Installed "iTunes" (7.6.2)
    2008-04-24 23:19:26 -0700: Installed "Front Row Update" (2.1.3)
    2008-04-24 23:20:23 -0700: Installed "Safari" (3.1.1)
I go to /var/log/system.log (normally visible from Console) and here is the last 200 lines of the log:

This process and Spotlight are two processes that seem to be crashing over and over.
It seems to me that the update last night pushed the memory profile of the "base" operating system (which would seem to include the 4 items updated last night) above the threshold of what is really required for successful operation of the system. In other words the system seems to be running out of memory and essential processes are unable to run, let along other programs.
Has anyone else run into this problem? I looked and I don't see anyone else who has posted with this problem. Then again, if it's their only system, and their system is as disabled as this system is, they wouldn't be able to get online to report it anyway. And since ReportCrash keeps...well...crashing, Apple wouldn't know about it.
I feel my only alternative is to backup the files off of the system (which I am doing now), then downgrade back to OS 10.4 (the system did originally come with 10.4). I just hope I have no impediments to doing so. If I can't downgrade, I suppose I could do a clean 10.5 install and then don't do any updates, but that's no good either. My only other alternative is to upgrade the RAM, I guess.
Bottom line is this system is truly hosed and totally unusable in it's current state.
    Anybody have any better alternatives?
    Thanks,
    Robert...

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
I suggest an erase and install and use your backup for any important files you have.
Did you perform a disk check/repair and permissions repair and a PRAM zap before updating? While not required, they are usually necessary to avoid issues.
There are so many reasons for a bad install, that it is impossible to list them all.
Out-of-date software, drivers, etc, haxies, and other software can cause problems.
My three updates were without incident, so it is possible for a perfect update, but unless you supply us with details about your previous system, programs, apps, drivers, etc., it is not possible to figure out what happened.
Again, whenever installing an update to an OS, a clone or other full backup is absolutely necessary, as reading the posts on this board indicate.

  • Core 2 Duo or Intel Core i5?

I am planning to buy a used or refurbished 17" Macbook Pro.
I do a lot of graphics work, using an Intuos 4 tablet. My usual software is Photoshop CS 6, Photoshop Elements 10, Photoshop Elements 6, and Toonboom Storyboard Pro. There's also a very strong chance of my using programs such as Adobe After Effects and Toonboom Animate Pro in the future.
I'm wondering what is best for me: Will an older Core 2 Duo be enough, or do I need an Intel Core i5?

Unfortunately, the 17" was taken out because of not having a high demand.
I'm well aware of the numbers. I'm also aware of the fact that the Retina display could not be produced in the 17" form factor at the time the 17" MBP was discontinued, and Apple did not want its flagship notebook computer to be "outclassed" by the 15" model, which some say is the real reason why Apple killed the 17" MBP. Of course, only Apple knows for sure, and in any case, it's their decision to make...for whatever reasons they want.
But consider this: The 17" MacBook Pro was unarguably the priciest notebook in the Mac product line. I suppose some units might have been purchased by folks who had more dollars than sense — people who didn't really need the screen area, but simply HAD to have the top of the line, the best of the best, la crème de la crème. But I don't think that's true of most 17" MBP users.
In fact, if the posts I've read are any indication of the typical 17" MBP user profile, most of them are professionals who use their machines for productive work. Apple could charge any price and they'd buy it because it's the tool they need. Price is not the primary consideration, which means that the 17" could easily have been a low-volume, high-margin product; IOW, high profit per unit, which is generally not the reason why a company discontinues a product.
So the argument that demand was low doesn't quite ring true. Superficially, it sounds plausible, but I suspect there's more to it.
Anyhow, that's a glimpse into a debate that won't be resolved here. The fact remains that, for those who know the value of the 17" form factor, nothing else will do. It might not make any sense to those who have never used a 17" MBP day in and day out for production workflow. But to those who do, it's a fact.

  • Can i upgrade cpu of my late 2009 macbook from intel core 2 duo to intel i5 for i7?

My macbook is a late 2009 macbook with 2.26GHz Intel core 2 duo processor with 2GB DDR3 memory. Can I upgrade its processor to latest dual-core intel i7 processors?

However drop an SSD in that puppy and bump the RAM to 8 GB and you'll never miss the i5 or i7 processor.

I only deal w/ OWC. Done 6 Macs so far: Mini, MBP MB Unibody 2009 like yours and not a hint of a problem w/ any of the installs.
