Intel Core Cuo 17" Shuts off unexpectedly + cannot run on battery w/o power

Laptop is 13 mos old... not ure if i just need to replace my battery or not.. but it just shuts down on me randomly. It has been a few weeks of just observing this situation and trying to figure it out, but it is becoming more and more frequent. Today i came home and opened it up without the power chord in, showed 100% battery... surfed the net and noticed the % dropping slowly to about 96% after about 5 minutes, until it hit 95 and shut off completely. I started it back up without the power chord in, the apple on sound chimed...and then went blank before the apple processing icon could come on. I plugged it into the power chord, started it up... and have been working on it for over an hour now just fine...BUT with the power chord in. I downloaded and installed the battery update on the apple website... Restarted...(with power chord in) booted up, and looked at battery icon. Listed as 0% with the charging icon. I am back to 100% since typing this post... what do i do if this doesn't do the trick?
1. How long does a standard apple battery supposed last with average use? 1 year? I don't use it for work... just leisure.
2. Do i just need a new battery? hate to buy one if i don't need it since they are $126...
FYI -
here are my system profiler power settings: (note capacity is 0, but my icon says 100% and plugged in with power)

  • New iPhone 5s shut off unexpected and won't turn back on

I just received my new 5s. I activated it. Made a phone call. I was downloading my apps, and using them, when the phone shut off unexpected. I tried to turn the phone back on, the apple logo appeared, then it went to the waiting circle for a couple of minutes. After a couple of minutes the screen had a blue screen for a second, then it went back to the waiting circle, then it turned off. I've tried turning it on a couple of times with the same results. Help!

    Hello Keith,
Congratulations on your new iPhone 5s!  I would be concerned too if my iPhone shut off unexpectedly and would not power on.  I found an article with steps you can take when you encounter an issue like this.  I recommend following the steps below:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Macbook pro charge cord stopped working & shuts off unexpectedly

    Hello,
All of a sudden, my charge cord has stopped working - I'm not sure if it's my actual computer or the cord.  It does not light up at all anymore and the battery icon says "not charging" sometimes.  It also will shut off unexpectedly and when I manually turn it on I get this message "can't verify the identify of the website" and the clock gets set back....help

Does your MBP get HOT when you are playing games, as they use quite a bit it the way computing cycles and generate a lot of heat.  I had this issue with my kids machine, try rasing the MBP up off ahy hard surface you mat have it on while playing. (I used 2 1"X1" strips of wood the increase air flow around the machine. The exhaust vents are in the back under the hinge, keep yhem clear. This simple fix seemed to work, no more problems. There also cooling trays with fans that are commecially avaiable. Are your fans spinnig up to cool the MBP? If not you might want to try a smc reset which controls the fans.

  • Why does my ipod classic shut off unexpectedly

Why does my ipod classic (80 gb) shut off unexpectedly?  This happens often and more so when the earphone (any earphone) moves.  The only time it does not shut off is when my ipod is lying flat on a table.

    Hey madelinefrommiami,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
After reviewing your post, it sounds like it may be a hardware issue if moving the earphone shuts off the iPod. A frustrating situation for sure. Take a look at this page for information on available service options.

  • Shutting off unexpectedly

Twice recently my powerbook has shut off unexpectedly while I was on Safari. It restarted back up ok. Any thoughts? I did get a cheap replacement battery awhile ago, but it shows as being fully charged and has worked ok before this issue started happening.

You bought a junk battery, apparently. Replace it with a real one.

  • MacBook Pro shuts off unexpectedly

So I've had my computer for a while, I think I got it back in March 2006, and around August 2006, I was having trouble with my battery where it would be fully charged, but would automatically shut down when I took the charger out. I went in to the Apple Store and they were able to replace my battery with a new one. Lately my computer gets really hot, so I bought a laptop fan to help cool it down and that helped a lot with how long the battery can last without the charger. This week, my computer began to shut down unexpectedly even at 79% battery life and when I try turning it back on, it'll begin the process of turning on and just shuts down again. As of right now, my cycle count is 246, and my full charge capacity is only 934 mAh. I began to calibrate my battery so I'm hoping it works, but it's not looking so good. I was wondering is there something I can do myself, or should I take it to the Apple Store and if I do, will they even replace my battery? Thanks!

You could try resetting the SMC, but it sounds like you may have a defective battery. Here is the link:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
Be sure and print out the article and take it with you, as not all Apple employees are familiar with this particular battery program. But if your battery meets the criteria, you should be able to get a free replacement.
However, it sounds like you may have developed a heat problem, and this may well be contributing to your battery problems. There are a couple of things to check:
First, run the Apple Hardware Test and see if you get any error codes that might indicate a failing thermal sensor (SNS) or fan (MOT). Use iStatPro to check that both fans are running and that they speed up with the heat and that both run at about the same speed.
Second, open Activity Monitor and set it to show all processes and look for some process which is using a lot of the CPU. Sometimes these things will run in the background and cause excessive CPU usage and heat.
    Good luck!

I couldn't find the edit button on my original post so I am posting an update here.
I have gone through more apps and have had good luck on all but one more.  And it's not that the app doesn't work, I am talking about the Yahoo Weather app, It works fine, but when you swipe between cities the screen lags a bit and it sometimes doesn't move between pages the way it should.  On iOS 7.1.2 it was smooth as butter but on iOS 8.0, not so much.  I will post a note in the app store to let them know.  I really like the Yahoo app better than the new stock app.
I have been going through my games and they all work fine. Angry Birds (Original and Stella), Canabalt, Minecraft, Bejeweled 2, Silly Walks, PopWords, Doodle Jump, Deep Green all seem to work just fine.
Starbucks app works as it should.
I will stop back again next week after I have had the weekend to play with it in detail and post my thoughts again.

  • MBP powering off unexpectedly when running on mains power

I have an early 2006 MBP 15". For the past few weeks it has been powering off unexpectedly while running on mains power. If I take the battery out and continue on mains power there is no problem.
I replaced the battery with a new one but I still have the same problem with running on mains power, battery installed and powering off unexpectedly. This happens about 5 minutes after powering up.
Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this?
    Thanks.

Hello J.C Thanks for your response. I tried resetting the SMC but the problem still occurred. With some further investigation I have narrowed it down to a USB accessory. Either mouse, keyboard or iPhone docking station.
Seems weird that the problem didn't occur when the battery was taken out but still running on mains power.

  • My Imac 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo keeps powering off

    Hi all,
I have a 20inch 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo (Imac 4.1), Over the last few weeks the Mac would just power off on the odd occasion when using Apeture, I put this down to being the just overworked for processing picture. This seems to have been getting worse and kept occurring more and more often. Light Internet browsing was fine..
I decided after some time to replace the 2gb memory i had to see if that would fix the issue, this seemed to work for a few days then the same issues returned.
I now seeing this issue occured just by opening Safari and decided to rebuild the Imac, I completed the Snowleopard install and all seemed ok for a day then it re-occurred again and seemed to be worse, I then removed the 2gb memory and just kept with the 512mb as when bought... Still it keeps powering off. I have moved to different power sockets and still see the same issues.
Please note in order to power the Imac backup up I have to leave the power out for about 20-30 minutes, If i leave the power plugged in it never boots backup up.
I now decided to even revert back to Lion OS, but it just powers off during the install...
I thinking it sounds like a Power supply issue but would like confirmation before I take it to a repair shop..
    cheers
    Dan.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.
