Intel core duo 2.8GHz Extreme - any views?

Thinking of buying a new iMac with the above and would appreciate any views from those who already have one.
Is Apple going to announce an even faster one at the expo on the 14th?
Also, are there any disadvantages/hitches with wireless keyboard and mouse?
Thanks in advance.

Worth noting: If you are planning on installing Windows with Bootcamp, you can't eject the install CD during Windows setup ( because Windows doesnt recognise the Apple wireless keyboard, where the only CD eject button is ).
When you open Boot Camp Assistant the first thing it says to do is *print the instructions* for "Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide" It lists on page 4 *"What You Need"* and clearly states you need "*a USB keyboard and mouse*" not wireless. When you have Boot Camp and Windows installed you are then able to go into Windows and set up your Blue Tooth for wireless mouse and keyboard.
This is using an Upgrade XP Professional SP2 install disk, purchased from a retail store. Half way through the install, it requests the previous Windows software install CD ( Windows 2000, in my case, which I also own ) for verification. No way to get past this that I have found.
The installation guide also says "you must use a single full-install Windows installation disc (Service Pack 2 is required for Windows XP installations). *Do not use an upgrade version of Windows XP.*
I have just this morning installed Boot Camp and Windows XP Service Pack 2 on my Mac, I already have a wire keyboard but I plugged in a wired mouse for the installation and had no problems.
So the disadvantages are extremely minimal, but also think about whether you use the number pad on a keyboard because the wireless keyboard has no number pad.

  • After PMU Reset, my Intel Core Duo widget doesent work any more.. normal?

alldough the Istat Nano temp widget does.. are they the same??
    thanx..!

    Hi,
I had a similar issue... Upgraded Mem to 2G... Everything worked fine for 3 weeks but sometimes I'd crash with the Grey Screen Of Death. Reboot and all's well for a few days... My Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66 is a PVR so it is basically on all the time.
    so I though Memory Issue...
I ran Hardware Diags and was getting random Memory faulures.each time I ran the test... so I cracked open the mini and ran individual tests to see which SODIMM was the problem... 1 only then the Other only, both in then swapped around etc... I found that each SODIMM worked fine by itself and passed HDiag... then in dual combo It failed a Memtest... but when swapping them around... I could not boot up. Power LED would blink and nothing would happen. Swap memory around and boot fine but HDiag fails memory test...
Basically my 3 week Old RAM was Bad so I took it back and got Replacement... I ran all the HDiags test again on the New Memory... all OK now.
You might have some dodgy RAM

  • Mac mini Intel Core Duo and HK Soundsticks USB, Any Problem???

    Hello everyone.
I am thinking of "transferring" my "old" HK Soundsticks USB for my sis's new Mac mini Intel Core Duo.
Is there any issue or problem with the mac detecting the USB speakers?? I thought I read somewhere here a while back that generally the Intel Macs might have a problem detecting the USB speakers.
    Thanks and cheers.

Hi NewMoses, thanks for replying but you have to be specific, if you just bought your Soundsticks, it is most likely the HK Soundsticks II, is yours?? which has a normal audio jack, unlike the 1st Soundsticks, which has a USB input.
I am sure the Soundsticks II with the audio jack would have not much problem on the new Intel Macs, since they are what I considered a "physical audio input", unlike the USB, which involves the USB technology, where more complication may come into play.
    Thanks and cheers

  • Rebuilding aMacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, hard drive failure so rebuilding system.  Aircard will not stop self-assigning IP address.  Any ideas how to resolve successfully?

Had hard drive failure on MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, so had to rebuild the OS on new drive. Was on Lion 10.7.5 prior to failure, but had to reinstall Snow Leopard 10.6.3 since that was most recent OS on media I had.  After finally getting ethernet connection to router working, was able to get to internet and download / upgrade to 10.6.8.  I assume I can probably buy the upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8 from there.
Problem is this, Airport will not stop self-assigning IP address for my wireless connection, and unless I can get wireless back on this laptop, doesn't make a lot of sense to continue the rebuild and reinstall of all the software that was on it prior to HD failure.  Only way to my home network and router is ethernet now.  Everything else on my network (Apple MacBook Pro laptops, iPhones, desktops, and non-Apple printers and laptops) is hooking up to router wirelessly fine.
Any ideas how to resolve successfully so that the airport will stop self-assigning and allow the router to assign the IP address?

    Hello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
#Open Firefox ''Options'' window (''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux) as follows:
#* In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options'' for Windows or ''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux.
#* In Firefox 28.0 and previous versions, click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
#In the Firefox Options (or Preferences) window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n upgrade options for early Intel Core Duo iMac

I have an iMac from mid 2006. I recently purchased a Timecapsule - partly for the wireless back ups, and partly to upgrade my wireless network to 802.11n. There is a software upgrade from Apple that upgrades older 802.11 a/b/g Airport cards in the iMac to 'n' standard. Here is the link:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/D4141ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mco=MjIzMDkzNA
The page states that the upgrade is compatible "If you have a Mac with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)". What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work. I have also tried to install Airport Extreme updates (2007002 and 2008004) and these report that the hardware is not compatible. Doing some searching around these forums and others, the issue with the original Core Duo iMacs not being upgradeable to 802.11n is out there - shame Apple weren't more explicit.
I have seen that there are various USB based 802.11n adapters available. Whilst searching on this topic, I also came across a site offering various Mac upgrades, including an upgrade to the Airport card to upgrade wireless capability from 802.11g to 802.11n. It looks like a straight replacement for the internal card - link here:
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?productsid=461
The company offering this is in the UK, but the product appears to be from a Sonnet, a US company. Does anyone out there have experience of installing this product (or having it installed) and can you comment on how it performs? Is it a seamless replacement for the original Airport card?

What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work.
If it says you need to have a Core "2" Duo processor, then it seems to me they are telling you very clearly that it will not work with the earlier Core (no "2") Duo iMacs.
The "late 2006" iMacs with Core 2 Duo (except for that one education model they mentioned) have wireless networking hardware that is 802.11n capable. When they were initially sold, Apple chose to NOT enable the "n" capability for some reason; maybe because the standard was still in flux and not enough testing had been done with the driver. Later, they enabled the "n" capability with a firmware update. But that was only possible because the wireless hardware was already capable of doing "n."
Earlier iMacs do not have this hardware so there is no way to enable it with a firmware or software update. 802.11g is plenty fast enough for Internet access (you won't notice a difference with "n"). If you are using Time Machine over wireless, it may take a while longer to do that initial backup (you could connected it by Ethernet cable when it is doing that initial backup), but subsequent backups are incremental, so the "g" versus "n" speed difference will not be as critical. Since your iMac is Core Duo (32-bit) and the future of Mac OS X is 64-bit, especially after Snow Leopard's release, it may be best to save your money and keep your iMac intact (not opened).
