Intel Core Duo case badge
I've managed to find original Intel Core Duo case badges, just wondering if they would leave any markings on the iMac should I decide to remove it at a later date? Perhaps someone with PC building expertise who knows more about the material these badges are made of could comment.

If you remove it later, it will most likely leave an adhesive backing/residue on the case of the iMac. Ive found this out from playing around with badges on PC's. You can get the adhesive off, but it takes a good amount of scrubbin'.

SATA 2.5" drives either need a PCI-SATA card or a Firewire SATA case to connect to a PowerMac G5 or Mac Pro.

Usually though, moving drives from one machine to the next simply makes user data transfer quicker, and is not a way to migrate applications or operating systems. This can get real sticky going between PowerPC and Intel Macs as this migration tip explains:

OK dear forum readers,
I am planning on upgrading my PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 to the Intel Core Duo platform. I have no idea where to start. So I am looking for suggestions/short list of what I need to do once I have both computers sitting next to each other. Do I need a cable? Do I need to buy additional software? Just as an FYI I do not backup to .Mac or anything. Though I do regularly do a PSyncX backup to an external hard-drive.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

CoreDuo sounds like iMac (not Mac Pro) so you can't just pull the drive and plug it in. There are SATA cases with FW and SATA interface of course. If you are selling the G5, I'd keep the drive and keep my files. I'd use your backup drive and Migration Assistant .... very caustiously... and reinstall applications.
Cache folders, drivers, anything that goes into the top level Library and System/Library should not be reinstalled.
Not all programs that are PPC work under Rosetta.
MacIntouch and Macfixit have lists of what is compatible or is in UB native format. -

i seem not to be the only one who can't make it run. i've searched here through the forums and apparently it's wacom drivers fault that causes painter to crash on the intel core duo platform...
if that was the case wouldn't wacom updated their drivers long time ago? i'm sure such an issue would've been huge for corel, enough to contact wacom and adress it so that they update their drivers or something.
i tried to install older wacom drivers but painter 9.5 is still not opening up.
painter 9.5 is out since february and this issue must have happened since the intel (core duo) introduction. i just can't believe these two companies would not care about it.

There's a warning with IX.5 to clear out the preferences (hold down shift while launching) on the first post-update run. You may want to see if that clears the tablet crash thing.
So you may want to remove the program, run the installer, and run the update, and hold the shift key during the first run. -
32-bit Intel Core Duo ok with upcoming 64-bit Leopard?
How well suited is the 32-bit Intel Core Duo in my MacBook Pro to run the future 64-bit Leopard OS? What would be the compromises?
Should I sell my Core Duo now while I can (maybe...) and upgrade to the 64-bit Core2 Duo. Would a 32-bit chip such as the Core Duo struggle to operate efficiently - or at least as fast as it does under 32-bit Tiger - when run within the 64-bit Leopard OS?

If all else is equal, a 64-bit MPU will be slower than its 32-bit equivalent. A study conducted by DEC found that, on average, compiling for 64bit programs decreases performance by 5%. This is because 64-bit address pointers occupy more space, resulting in higher data cache miss rates. In fact, 64-bit ISAs still support 64-bit addressing and 32-bit data operands, specifically to keep code size down and the miss rate penalty to a minimum; thus 32-bit integer data is still going to be used when the larger range of 64-bit integers are not needed.
What good is 64-bit computing?
There is one good use for 64-bit integer arithmetic: 64-bit flat memory addressing. So it's not clear that going 64-bit, in and of itself, would yield any improvement in performance; it may well be worse in some cases (and your analogy might well be true, depending on the cache algorhythms and efficiency).
Certainly if one processor has a wider memory bus than another, then the first processor should, all else being equal, outperform the second processor. I can't find specs on the memory fetch for the Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo, so I can't say whether or not they differ. The PowerPC G5 processor actually has a 128-bit wide memory fetch (64-bit in and 64-bit out) though it's classified as a "64-bit processor" (based on it's memory address space, I would presume).
So, as you allude, one has to be careful making performance estimates just based on a desciption of a processor being "32 bit" or "64 bit". We'll have to wait to see reasonable benchmarks between the Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo running a 64-bit OS before we'll really know what advantage, if any, there is.

Is it possible to upgrade the OS from Tiger to either Lion or Leopard on a MacBookPro1,1 2GHz Intel Core Duo (2006)? Need to upgrade Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft software...
Here's something to consider. I see you have 1G RAM. That works well enough for Tiger 10.4. However, I think Leopard or Snow Leopard will be happier if you increase the RAM.
Your MBP can handle up to 2G of RAM. It has two RAM slots'In your case, there would be one 512MB module in each slot. You could replace one 512MB module with a 1G module and have a total over 1.5G. That would be a big help. Or replace both. If you are in the US, RAM is not expensive (see: 2.0GB Upgrade Kit (1.0GB Modules x 2 Matched) for US$33), and the RAM is easily installed even by the most novice user.

Mac mini Intel Core Duo fan very loud and runs at high speed all the time.
I purchased an "Open box" Mac mini Intel Core Duo, 1.66Ghz, 2G ram, 80G HD and SD a few days ago from Fry's.
It runs beautifully except the fan is very loud compared to any Mac my family has ever had. It is so loud that we were thinking of putting it under the desk.
The fan runs constantly, and I mean all the time, at a high speed. You can really feel the air coming out the exhaust vents. The case is always cool to the touch as is the exhaust air.
My aunt bought a similar Mac mini (But only 512Mb ram) the same day. Her's is very quiet. The case feels just slightly warm, not unlike other Mac mini's I've seen.
Should my Mac mini's fan be running this way?

BTW: The "open box" was sealed with a Fry's label and it said that this had a new warranty. Yet, checking the serial number, it said that it had about 260 days left. I guess Fry's is backing it?
Also, someone told me that perhaps the main wire from the fan to the logic board is disconnected.

eMac 1Ghz, iBook 500 dual usb, Mac mini 1.66Ghz Intel Core Duo 2g ram Mac OS X (10.4.8)Since you have 2 gigs of memory, my thoughts are that when the party (Fry's or the origianl purchaser) upgraded the memory, they neglected to reattach the wire at the front of the Mini under the IR receptor at the right front corner that regulates the fan speed. This wire must be unattached in order to upgrade the memory, and is probably why the original person brought it back, because of the fan noise resulting from failing to reattach the wire. If that wire is left unattached, the fan runs continually at high speed to protect the CPU and system in general. If you do not want to use a putty knife to open the Mini, take it back to Fry's and ask someone who is Mac savvy to open it and reattach the small plastic receptacle at the end of the wire into its socket at the right front of the machine. When I go to Fry's, I am always concerned because the employees allow people to pry keys off of the Apple notebooks, so don't expect that their employees to know or care about anything Mac.

Has anyone made a considerable test with GarageBand on an Intel Core Duo Mac. I would like to know if Garageband is really well optimized for that chip. I know that this is not the case for every iLife '06 parts.
Thank you for any informationI have had my Intel iMac 2ghz chip and 2 gig ram about three weeks now. The sound is incrediblly quiet, no pops and clicks so far. I am using both real and software instruments and have been very impressed with the Intel iMac so far.
Even with my Behringer V-Amp Pro hooked up to a Presonus Firepod which is hooked to the iMac the sound quality is amazingly clean.
Previously I was using Cubase on a dell pc and the background noise of the pc combined with the limitations of 512k of ram made music making unbearable. Lots of noise-pops, crackles and missed notes.
After looking at stand alone DAW such as Yamaha, Korg and Akai I decided to go computer based now with the mac. One of the major reasons sound quality combined with screen size, I have the 20 inch iMac. I can stand across the room and still see my meters and waveforms, not so with the small screens on the DAWs.

Upgrading 2006 MBP Intel Core Duo to SSD?
My MBP is starting to become depressingly slow. After some research, it appears I'm maxed out at 2GB of memory! I was wondering if anyone has any experience upgrading the hard drive to a SSD in the same model as mine? Would I notice a huge difference?
I want to install Lion, but am very nervous it will bring my computer to an unusable creep as I've heard from others.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can give info/advice/links, etc. I've never actually upgraded a hard drive before so any tips would be much appreciated!There is a common misconception that computers slow down over time. This is just not the case. There is no reason for your computer to run slower today than the day you bought it. There is usually something which causes your system to become slow. Things like low hard drive space and perhaps applications running in the background that you weren't aware of can impact speed. A failing hard drive can also cause problems.
As you currently have a 5400RPM 120GB hard drive, you will see a significant change in the amount of time it takes applications to launch with an SSD. Keep in mind, an SSD is only replacing your hard drive, so it is only increasing the speed of loading data from your drive. It won't speed up your applications (except, again, the drive access time for applications that may rely heavily on disk use). As you only have 2GB of RAM, your system likely pages data to your hard drive fairly often. This is when your RAM is "full" and it dumps some of the data to your hard drive so it can load more into the RAM. When you have a low amount of RAM to start with, this happens more often. As an SSD is somewhat faster, this becomes less noticeable.
Instructions for replacing your drive may be found in your user's manual. You should avoid going with SATA 6GB (aka SATA III). While they will work, the SATA speed on your system is SATA 1.5GB. Even if you get a SATA 6GB drive, it will only run at 1.5GB... so there's no sense in paying for the extra speed. You probably won't be able to find a SATA 1.5GB drive... but a SATA 3.0GB (SATA II) drive will be less expensive than a 6GB drive and it will perform just as well on your system. The drive in your system now doesn't come close to saturating the bandwidth of your SATA 1.5GB controller. So, even with the older SATA 1.5GB controller, you will still see a significant boost in speed with an SSD.
Having said all that... basically, yes... an SSD will make your system noticibly faster, but it will not boost processing speeds for your applications. -

I have an Imac 2.8 GHZ Intel core duo, a month ago during booting instead of the apple picture appears a world picture and takes a lot of time to start, Is this normal?? also I feel the computer much slower since then, does any body know what is this? How can I fix this? Thanks
Gomtomsyetm preferencs and make sure that you HDD is selected as the start up disk. Then start up using your install disc and run disk utility and repair the drive just in case something has gotten corrupt.

Airport sleep/wake problems on iMac Intel Core Duo
I have seen several posts with similar issues but I haven't found an answer yet that has worked for me consistently so I am going to restate the question. I have a 20" new iMac CoreDuo with 1Gb RAM and of course an Airport extreme wireless card. When the computer goes to sleep, first of all it often takes a very long time for it to come awake (on the order of 30 seconds - or more), then when it comes back the wireless connection is 1) either completely missing, in other words, the hardware can't even be found in system information or 2) the airport is detected, radio is on, but it can not find any networks to connect to. The only thing I have found to fix this issue is to do a hard reboot. I have done an archive and install, and have also deleted the system configuration folder multiple times. I have been on the phonw with Apple tech support and they have not helped beyond those two suggestions and the only reason they suggested them was because I forwarded them the posts on these forums that recommended them. Can anyone please suggest a fix for this issue? Assuming, of course, that it is not a case of a bad piece of hardware/firmware in which case I just have to wait for a new driver or take it in to the "shop".
iMac 20" Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.4) 1Gb RAMI have the exact same configuration and I haven't had this problem. I have noticed that the signal has no bars when waking from sleep, but then after a couple of seconds it automatically reconnects. Maybe it IS bad hardware. Have you isntalled any software that is network related (including widgets, drivers etc...) or do you have any drivers loaded... wireless printer driver, etc...
My profiler looks like this (sorry it's in italian but you could still compare the info)...look at the firmware, maybe it's different.

As a last resort, you could completely wipe the computer clean and reinstall the OS. This would eliminate the possibility of any 3rd party stuff interfering. -

I have a Mac mini OS X 10.4.11, intel core duo processor (not core 2 duo), with 512 mb and 1.83 GHz processor. I only have version 9.0.3 of iTunes because it hasn't let me go higher, which I believe is because of the operating system. I want to get my purchased music from the Mac mini to a different computer (that has the latest version of iTunes) and also my iPad. The Mac mini does not meet the requirements listed to simply upgrade to snow leopard or lion. As far as I can tell. Forgive me if I am lacking here...this is new to me. What can I do to get the music transferred. I have invested alot of money over the past few years on all this music that I should be able to transfer. Thank you in advance if you can help me.
If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

Macbook1,1 Intel Core Duo: Support for 3gig RAM??
Hi All,
I've recently upgraded my rather standard MacBook from 80gig HD 1gig RAM (2x512) to a 320gig HD and 2gig RAM (1 x 2gig card). I really wanted to insert a further 1 gig of ram, thus having a 2gig and 1gig in each slot.
However, the computer doesn't seem to boot with 3gig installed.
System Profiler tells me:

I keep reading conflicting reports all over the support site, with some saying macbooks can hold a max of 2gig ram and other saying 3gig is supportable.
I fear that my model may be too old to run 3gig? Is there a firmware upgrade or similar that might allow me to expand to 3gig?
Any tips, advice, feedback or even jeers are welcome!

A Core Duo MacBook supports a maximum of 2GB RAM. A Core 2 Duo MacBook supports 3GB or more depending on the model.
I fear that my model may be too old to run 3gig?
