Intel Core i5 vs Intel Core i7

Other than the processor speed, is there any other benefit to purchasing the i7 quad core over the i5 quad core IMac? I will be buying one of the new IMac's in a couple of weeks and wanted to know what other people though about it.

If you can afford the difference then for sure go for the fastest you can get.
Especially that you are a heavy gamer, the faster system you get now will last you the
longest for the more demanding games that will be coming out in the months and years to come.
Not to mention the big files on Aperture.
Thats if you plan to keep your new iMac for more than 2 years.
If you keep your macs for less than that then the i5 might be a viable option now with what is currently out there software wise to take full advantage of the quad cores.

With two more cores, there is one third more heat. To compensate for more heat the processor runs at a slightly slower speed. You still get better performance; because you have more cores. When not all cores are in use, the other cores can actually run faster then the chip is rated.

Difference between Intel Core Duo and Intel Core 2 Duo

I bought my MBP in November of last year, before the update on the Pros. However, it says about the new Pros that they have Intel Core 2 Duo processors, which are faster than the Intel Core Duos of previous MBPs. I know I bought mine before they updated them, but my "About This Mac" says that mine has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. So, did they update the processors before this latest update, or do have one of the new Macbooks somehow, or what happened? And, is there any difference between my 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo?

Only the original Intel machines came with Core Duo processors. The principal difference is that Core Duos are 32-bit and Core 2 Duos are 64-bit processors. There were also increases in available clock speed, L2 cache, and frontside bus speed. The first models only addressed 2 GBs of RAM. Later models had a different memory controller that enabled 3 GBs of user accessible RAM (4 GBs installed) and even later models such as yours had a memory controller that enabled accessing 4 GBs of RAM (4 GBs installed.)
The first Intel Minis came with a Core Solo processor which had only one core instead of two.

Intel Core 2 Duo or Core Duo???

Greetings! I have a 17" MacBook Pro that I purchased last August 2006. How can I tell if it has the Intel Core 2 Duo or Core Duo processor?? Apparently, there is a difference in the maximum memory that can be installed: 3 GB for the Core 2 Duo and only 2 GB for the Core Duo. Any know how to determine the processor type?

i was only half serious about the rumour sites thing.. actually you're the perfect example of someone that has the right attitude to making a computer purchase. you understand that all manufacturers including apple aren't about to start yelling from the rooftops that a machine will be replaced with a faster one coming up in a couple of weeks. it just makes no sense to freeze the sales of the current machine prematurely, and people know they can always pick up remaining stock of the outgoing model at a reduced price after the new one is announced. you've also stated that while the new machines seem a little faster (well duh what's new under the sun?), you're happy with the performance of the one you have, and it does what you need it to do.
I think it's only ever a good idea to keep the most casual eye on the rumour sites, just to get an inkling of any possible new developments. but it's pretty much a dumb idea to base your shopping on what they say. in my case, I waited for the core 2 duo machine because I happened to be looking to buy one literally just when is started making the tech news that the core 2 duo chips for laptops were making their way into machines, and some PC laptops were already shipping with them. it seemed the sensible thing to do to wait a couple of weeks before placing my order, and I was in a position where I could wait anyway. i also knew that I'd be waiting at least a couple of weeks if not more for any machine I ordered to be shipped because I was always going to order a custom configuration anyway. so in my case it paid off.
but I read a lot of people putting off buying a machine for frankly silly reasons, fed by the rumour sites. a lot of audio pro logic users (like myself) are fixated on the idea of waiting for the next generation intel portable chips because of a combination of some kind of power **** fed by the rumour sites. and also a lot of them are also PC users, and so they are terrified that whatever they buy now might be a bad choice because leopard is around the corner and it might change the ballgame, causing problems with machines bought earlier.. it can all be quite misleading and make you wait without a machine for no good reason. and then when you look at the intel info on what the next series of C2D chips will be, it's only a speed bump to 2.4Ghz above the 2.33 that it currently tops out at. I'm sure there are other enhancements too, but it's hardly earth-shattering. and then on top of that, there's just no way that leopard is going to have any issues at all, esp compared to vista, with recent machines, and probably not even much older ones too. in fact, sometimes it's a bad idea to buy a machine that comes pre-installed with the latest OSX because it has been the case in the past that the firmware on these machines doesn't allow them to retrograde to work with a previous OS version. this can be a big issue for some users! for example if you are an audio pro, and you use digidesign hardware, they are notorious for taking a long time to release drivers for new OS versions, and not only that, their previous drivers often just won't work at all with newer OS's until they release their newest driver, unlike other manufacturers whose drivers often survive the transition without requiring an update just to stay functional. so in cases like this, listening to the rumours too much and holding off on buying can actually be totally the wrong thing to do.
anyway, I've just had a little rant haven't I? glad you're happy with your machine, and for anyone else reading, I hope I've given a little perspective on the matter.

My 20" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo had become almost useless due to freezes and crashes- with NO crash reports in the logs.
They were often preceeded by video glitches, so I assumed it was a bad video card- unfortunately soldered to mother board.
Apparently, from forum postings, this is not an uncommon problem. The computer would run longer if the day was cooler, but rarely more than 10 minutes, so I suspected it was aggravated by heat.
Then I found this post from Bodomann on an Apple Support forum:
"Following up on my previous posting regarding my son's late model 2006 iMac that required a $900 logic board replacement:
Turns out the problem is apparently related to a bad CPU temp sensor. I installed 'iMac Fan Control' (Google it) which reported the CPU temp always at 32 degrees Fahrenheit (obviously incorrect). The same software allowed me to adjust the CPU fan manually. After multiple trials I set the CPU speed to 2800RPM after which the system would run forever - never freezing with the dreaded grey box 'reboot me' screen. I tried several times reverting the software to default speeds and the system would always crash within 10 minutes. "
I downloaded free Fan Control 1.2 for Imac from Derman Enterprises (they have an Intel iMac and a Mac Book/Pro version). It installs as a system preferences control panel. I cranked up all three fan speeds. The fans sped up noticeably. Horizontal lines have gone from screen (so far), no color artifacts and no crashes yet. I may have a real computer back! Hope Apple checks this out-
The control panel also gives the temps sensors are reporting at the CPU, hard drive and DVD drive. The CPU sensor reports the CPU temp as 32 degrees F- which is clearly wrong, unless Apple has been installing little refrigerators inside.

Performance of AIR Windows desktop app on Intel i7 4770R & integrated Intel Iris Pro 5200 128MB

I'm developing a Full HD AIR desktop application to run on Windows, and it is likely to use the classic display list, rather than Starling. There will be quite a bit of animation on screen, mostly using GSAP Tween engine.
I usually spec a fast i5 / i7 CPU, with a decent NVidia card such as a Geforce GTX 560. My hardware supplier has advised they cannot provide my requested CPU & GPU combination, and have instead recommended an Intel Core i7 4770R (quad-core, 3.2 GHz) (Turbo up to 3.9 GHz), with integrated graphics Intel Iris Pro 5200 w/128MB eDRAM. The specification of the CPU & GPU look ok, but I wondered if anyone has any experience of using either this CPU or GPU with AIR desktop applications, and what they think to the performance? Should the low amount of 128MB RAM on the integrated graphics be a concern?

1.Make sure you understand the big differences between video and stagevideo, its tempting to think that stagevideo is the better videosoultion in any case, but its not.

3.I don`t know how you encode your Backgroundvideo, there are literally dozens of viable codecs that should differ extremly in how they stress the gpu/cpu. Maybe you have to experiment with a lower than HD resoultion and see if scaling up the background is a good compromise.

IMovie/iDVD and 8-core vs. 4-core

I'm close to purchasing a new Mac Pro and I'm having a tough time deciding if the 8-core is worth the extra money. I've read MacWorld's review and it's benchmark tests. I've also seen some other reviews (Geekbench or something like that.) What I'm unable to tell is how encoding would be effected in iMovie or iDVD. My main work is related to converting analog video to digital and then creating a movie in iMovie and burning through iDVD. So much of my time is spent waiting around for the assets to encode and so time is definitely money. I'm just not sure it's worth the extra $1500 given some of the tests.
Given that I'm not working with 3D or working with multiple tasks or apps (where it seems that the 8-core shines) is there any benefit here in getting the 8-core over the quad-core? Will the extra cores kick in at all just encoding video? If I'm reading things right I'm not sure it would. Which raises another question. What if I finished an iMovie project, shared it with iDVD, and then began another iMovie project at the same time? Would this take advantage of the 8 cores? Also, will Leopard make much of a difference?

In regards to an 8-core refurb for $3300, that is still a quad-core system.
I've been watching the refurbs pretty closely for a couple of months (waiting to get a new Mac Pro), and have never seen an 8-core on there yet (unless I missed it).
They do have two Mac Pro's that are 3 GHz on there, and they are two different prices. But, neither of them is an 8-core system.
The only obvious difference is that the more expensive one has two Superdrives instead of just one. But, they are both definitely quads.
I am pretty confident that an 8-core system would sell for much more as a refurb than a quad core.
Anyway, I only provide this for information purposes. I hope this helps.

Im thinking of changing from a dual core to a quad core Intel Xeon on my mac pro.
Is this a case of just changing processors or is there,more involved,motherboards etc?

The Mac Pro isn't like a PC. It's much more risk to upgrade processors. It is something I would never do to my Mac Pro.
I wouldn't risk it. But, if you really want 8-cores (and let me tell you, it sure is awesome!), I wouldn't recommend doing it, but I have no other resonable options. I don't think Apple would upgrade it for you.

Yes, the desktop chips are faster due to being quad-core - but getting a quad-core 32nm laptop chip should be faster still.
Unfortunately, there aren't any yet, AFAIK.
..and there are unlikely to ever be, not in this series of CPU in any case. The problem is heat dissipation and power consumption, neither of which are anywhere near a match for what Apple is aiming at with its notebooks. However, AFAIK, you can already buy notebooks from other vendors (can't remember where I read this, CNET?) which do use the physical quad version of the core series CPU that Apple only use in the iMacs. So, you can get a 'real' quad core notebook of some kind, however it won't have anywhere near the battery life of the MBPs (who cares?), and will be in a much less slim case with probably a lot more fan noise, to deal with the heat. Also, it will only, ahem, officially run Windows or Linux or whatever. Officially.
But don't rule out HT! I know I am a bleedin broken record on this topic, but when it's used on the mobile i5/i7, it really does just present itself to the software like it's a real quad core and it really does make a difference. Not on the same order as having totally discreet cores, but it does simply work as if it was and the difference is palpable. The ProTools tests I did in that other discussion really shows it in action. When PT sends work to 4 cores (on the desktop version of the i7), it can run a good whack more plug ins than when it just has 2 cores available to it. It's a pity that Logic seems to be currently ignoring it, but on the measure I demonstrated with PT, it looks like an 'almost' quad mobile CPU is actually a pretty decent tradeoff for a notebook system for the time being, at least for every other app except Logic..
I'm sure future generations of Intel hardware will probably eventually get more discreet physical cores into a mobile CPU that Apple will be happy to use. In fact I found some articles via a google search that suggested the generation of CPUs coming sometime in 2011/2012 will be able to get power consumption and heat down to do just that. But for now, HT is a very reasonable substitute. The other day I was able to easily get about 35 more reverb plug ins to run live on the mobile i7 than I could on my Core 2 Duo and I saw HT working right before my eyes, distributing the work across 4 cores in Activity Monitor. So it's clear that HT can make a significant difference if it's used, even if it will always be a bit less than having a real quad core.
I'd say the next generation of Apple notebooks will be when the number of physical cores gets upped. For now, they won't just shoe-horn a desktop CPU into their sleek notebooks and throw out all of the battery life and slim design principles. But other manufacturers have chosen right now to do this in notebooks, even given the extra heat and power consumption, so there are alternatives out there.. I think Dell and Alienware do notebooks using a desktop i7 (ie, with 4 full cores), but from what I saw I think they chose a lower clocked one so the things don't last 5 minutes on battery and melt down after one hour of use.

So Mike, as far as you state, I can understand that at present, if I change my 2 x 3 GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon with an 8 cores Nehalem I wouldn't get much performance difference..

You have an eight core machine already? If that's the case, I definitely wouldn't bother updating yet. At least not until Logic is updated or they announce even faster macs (which hopefully should be soon).
If you want to see better performance, I'd spend the cash on faster drives or something else.

Performance comparison---using LABVIEW..between Embedded and general-purpose Intel's single VS multi-core CPU

kindly, can any one tell me : is it possible to use Labview installed on desktop pc to show up statistically the main performance key features between mutlicore systems and single core systems but with (two versions, embedded and general purpose CPU) . in other words: I'm trying to resemble embedded cpu with general purpose CPU so that i can only work on Desktop pc than say that the obtained results are the same for embedded multicore CPU.

Please look at this page which shows a new feature in LabVIEW 2009, but particularly interesting is the video which shows the performance benefits on a PC platform of single core VS multicore.
LabVIEW doesn't have any ability to emulate a multi-core embedded processor (unless its an intel x86 processor that labVIEW supports!) so to discover the performance benefits of embedded multicore processors, you would need an external hardware board and devise a test in which labVIEW can measure the timing via an external pin toggled by a program running on the embedded processor that could utilise multiple cores (there may be other ways but this is the way that comes to my mind).

Mac Mini Intel 512MB 1.83MHz Intel Core Duo totally useless after update

After performing an update of a Mac Mini 1.83MHz Intel Core Duo with 512MB of RAM, the system no longer functions.
The system will boot up and display the desktop, but all of the accessories in the upper-right corner (Date, Volume Control, Eject, etc.) never show up. All it does up there is display solid white, then it doesn't display anything (just displays the menu bar regular background color).
QuickTime automatically launches on startup, and it appears to stay up until I click on QuickTime and select "Preferences", then it closes.
The only other application that launches is iTunes. I can't get ANYTHING else to launch, including Safari, Terminal and Console. I can't even get "About this Macintosh" to come up. It's lucky I set this particular system up some time ago to accept SSH connections, otherwise I don't know how I would be able to see what's going on. I can SSH into the system from another system (another Mini as it turns out). It's with this that I can see what's going on.
I looked at "top" and I keep seeing "ReportCrash" starting up, running for a few seconds, then terminating and then relaunching with another process ID. Evidently something is crashing and it's trying to report the crash, but it can't complete the process.
I looked at the Software Update Logs (located at /Library/Logs), and here is what it says it updated last night:

This process and Spotlight are two processes that seem to be crashing over and over.
It seems to me that the update last night pushed the memory profile of the "base" operating system (which would seem to include the 4 items updated last night) above the threshold of what is really required for successful operation of the system. In other words the system seems to be running out of memory and essential processes are unable to run, let along other programs.
Has anyone else run into this problem? I looked and I don't see anyone else who has posted with this problem. Then again, if it's their only system, and their system is as disabled as this system is, they wouldn't be able to get online to report it anyway. And since ReportCrash keeps...well...crashing, Apple wouldn't know about it.
I feel my only alternative is to backup the files off of the system (which I am doing now), then downgrade back to OS 10.4 (the system did originally come with 10.4). I just hope I have no impediments to doing so. If I can't downgrade, I suppose I could do a clean 10.5 install and then don't do any updates, but that's no good either. My only other alternative is to upgrade the RAM, I guess.
Bottom line is this system is truly hosed and totally unusable in it's current state.
Anybody have any better alternatives?

I suggest an erase and install and use your backup for any important files you have.
Did you perform a disk check/repair and permissions repair and a PRAM zap before updating? While not required, they are usually necessary to avoid issues.
There are so many reasons for a bad install, that it is impossible to list them all.
Out-of-date software, drivers, etc, haxies, and other software can cause problems.
My three updates were without incident, so it is possible for a perfect update, but unless you supply us with details about your previous system, programs, apps, drivers, etc., it is not possible to figure out what happened.
Again, whenever installing an update to an OS, a clone or other full backup is absolutely necessary, as reading the posts on this board indicate.

I know that some places it says that the voltage is 2.5, but could I push it a bit with 2.6 ? because I really dont want to buy a no-name brand for what I want. However, if not, thats the way it is...

Most boards have the DDR voltage set to 2.6V I believed. So if you put in a 2.5V rated DDR, it will still work. Undervoltage may not. You can always refer to MSI Test Report on DDR http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_trp_detail.php?UID=606
but those are not complete list.
