Intel-Duo 20" iMac/Intel Chip Not As Good as Motorolla/Memory/System Delays

I admit - I am a World of Warcraft type guy. If I boot up the system - and just chose WoW - all is good. If I start Safari, it hangs for a bit - then loads. If I am running WoW - and Safari is up, WoW gets choppy. If I close Safari - and I have been playing a while, WoW remains choppy.
It seems to me that memory management of the iMac is not very good. Either ram is not flushing or there is a conflict between Safari and other programs. I have not put it through lots of tests- but I notice a major difference.
My old G4 portable - 17" PowerBook, actually handles this so much better. Am I the only one to notice a quality difference between Intel and Motorolla?
Thanks.

There's no difference in memory management based on hardware. Memory management is a function of the operating system and would be the same regardless of which platform is running OS X.
The problem you describe may more likely be related to the GPU and amount of VRAM and installed RAM as well as the screen resolution and bit depth.
Inasmuch as you did not provide the hardware configurations of both machines it's pretty difficult to identify any differences. Safari should not "hang" during startup which may suggest your system needs repair.

  • Need advice Imac G5 Intel Duo 2 Core 2ghz will not power up DEAD

Hi all. Hoping for some friendly advice. I have an Imac G" Intel Duo 2 Core about a year old or so. My adult son was using it. Never a single issue and a very mild user. He reformatted it the other night and turned it over to me because he got a new one. I'm thrilled since I'm still using my G4 733 I've been faithfully keeping in operation since April 2001 with almost no issues. The only thing I have done is allow it to auto update everything the night before last. It's set to sleep the screen after an hour and the whole thing about 2 hours. Been working fine and just touch the keyboard and back to life.
Well this afternoon went back to take some more tutorials and it's just dead. As if it had gone to sleep but no amount of button pressing helped. Unplugged everything on USB, firewire. Using apple bluetooth KB and mouse that came with it. Both had new batteries as of other night. Left power cable loose for 10-15 minutes and no help. Held the single power button for long periods, tried holding it while plugging in to wall, tried other wall outlets. Wiggled chord to see if flakey... read articles on resetting some macs but nothing helped so far.
    Thanks

Well update I did finally get it to come on after a couple hours of coming back and fiddling. In efforts to fix it I looked up the number on the stand and it looks to be made mid 2007 which means likely no warranty.
I popped out the memory under the little bottom edge cover and dusted off some of the woolies. Didn't help but I blew into the round fan vent on the rear and a good bit of dust even came out the top edge vent. Looks like my son gathered some dust in this thing.
Still thought it would not come on but pressed again and suddenly it's ON and working but the cooling fan seems to be stuck on fast mode. I can't see any way this thing is having heat problems in my office which is a little warm but not hot.
So likely will take into service to clean and dust it out etc and maybe this fan will begin running right. This iMac has never given one ounce of trouble either. I'm posting this using the iMac
    Any additional advice appreciated,

  • Mac Mini Intel Duo or Imac g5

I have an imac g5 with that lovely logic board problem and a fan that is on 24/7 that sounds like a rocket. It has 1.5 gig of ram in it right now. I am thinking of getting rid of the imac and purchasing an intel mac mini duo with about 1 gig of ram. Would the mini stand up to my imac g5 as far as speed and using programs? I will only use photoshop cs 2 (which i know runs under rosetta)so I know it might be slower in that program.. how much slower are we talking about? Does it take a couple minutes to finish a task? I'm just doing web graphics so nothing major like 3d or anything like that. I am thinking of purchasing a 20" display as well. Any thoughts on if I should wait until the mini gets a speed bump or just keep what I have?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.5 gig RAM

I did the same, switched from a iMac G5 20" 1.8 GHz and 1.2 GB RAM to a Mac mini Core Duo 1.66 with 2 Gig RAM witch a 23" CD.
For me the Mac mini is quite faster then the iMac. Universal Binary Programms are as fast or faster as on the iMac. I only have a small amount of not so much used PowerPC Programms which are not available as Universal Binaries today (one of the is Photoshop Elements 4 and Office 2004). Office runs very well for me. Photoshop is slower as on the iMac. I do not make difficult stuff in Photoshop so Performance is for me still ok, but if you work the whole day with it I would wait for a UB Version.
Something which I will change soon is the 5400rpm Harddisk, when doing a lot of Disk I/O (copying Files, backup etc.) it's slower than in the iMac. I probably will change it to a faster 7200rpm HD.
Overall I'm impressed from the Mac mini and the change was a success because I have one Windows Programm which I need daily and that was a pain in Virtual PC. Now with Parallels Desktop it works like a charm.

  • Firewire 800 xHD with intel duo core imac?

I need to get some new desktop external hard drives for backup. Want firewire, but all are 800s now.
Can I use them on my iMac6,1 - intel core 2 Duo? ca. 2008-2009. Has 3 ports for 400 Firewire (+ 2 USB which is too slow).
Also, Seagate used to be flawless. Now I read reports of them going bad in days or months. How is WD now? Recommendations?
    Thanks.  ~Ann

First off, FireWire 800 is backwards compatible with FireWire 400 - you just need either a FW800 - FW400 cable, or an adapter you can attach to an existing cable. Many vendors sell them, including MacSales. Then you can use your FW800-based drive on a machine with only FW400 ports (or vice versa).
As for brand - we all have our own horror stories as well as praises to sing. Personally, I run away, quickly, from anything WD and would err towards Seagate or Hitachi (even though the latter is now part of WD <sigh>).

  • 2.0 GHz Intel Quad core i7 vs. 3.7 GHz Intel Duo Core i7 Processor: Why not make the Quad Core 3.7GHz?

I don't really understand processors, but is the 2.0GHz Quad Core i7 really a better processor in terms of performance? If it has 4 cores why not give it greater processing speed like 2.7 or 3.0 GHz?
I am asking because I am thinking about getting the high end Mac Mini, but I see that it's processor runs at 2.0GHz and the others in the line run at 2.5 and 2.7 respectively. Why is this?

    I'm really oversimplifying here, but...
Let's just assume that each core runs at full speed all the time, the total performance of that processor would be the sum of the running totals of each core:
    Duo Core i7 = 2 (cores) * 2.7 GHZ = 5.4 Ghz total processor power
    Quad Core i5 = 4 (cores) * 2.0 GHZ = 8.0 Ghz
Like I said, oversimplified.  But, you get the point.  Not to mention, most apps still aren't optimized, so at a given time they only use a single core anyway. In this case, it'd be more beneficial to have more cores, since they would (hypothetically) be able to run more simultaneous processes (four vs. two in your case).
I gues the greater question is: what were you planning on using the mini for?  Most CPUs go underutilized anyway, so you may be better off getting a 2.0, and maxing out your RAM and maybe adding a SSD.  Those upgrades (the SSD especially) will result in a very noticeable increase in performance.

  • Intel duo Core and CS2 - does it work?

    Hi guys,
I'm doing really well. I ordered a 17" imac 1.82Ghz Intel Duo Core and I have not as yet received it.
I have alos ordered Aperture (which will work but possibly quite slow) although I have upgraded to 2Gb Ram.
I have also ordered Photoshop CS2 (full version) and I'm confused. Can I install it? Will it work?
If Aperture is slow and Photoshop CS2 doesn't work what can a amateur photographer use. I'm cheesed off because I ordered an expensive machine and software and before I have even received it I'm seeing that it might not be suitable at all.
Can someone give me some "peace of mind" please.
    17" IMAC (1.83Ghz) Intel duo Core / 2GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Although you can use CS2 with an Intel Mac you should be aware of a significant problem which relates to its installation on them since the last Security update. According to Frank, one of the more senior members of the boards , with a good knowledge of this area:
The CS2 installer will fail if you have applied SU 2006-003 prior to the installation of CS2 on an Intel-based Mac. You will be required to reinstall Tiger, otherwise you will be only able to reboot the machine via a Netboot, CD boot or Safeboot. The Finder is completely locked. It is unknown at this time which extension is causing the issue. Adobe has acknowledged the problem.
One workaround that I am aware of has been suggested on MacFixit:
    MacFixIt reader David Warren writes:
"I had the startup freeze like others. For my MacBook Pro the answer was removing the Adobe VersionCueCS2 from /Library/StartupItems.""(from MacFixit - http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2006051507495116 )
To do this, though, you would need to be happy starting up in the non-standard ways suggested by Frank. I wouldn't normally suggest this for a new Mac user. If you plan on going down this path post back and we can tell you how to.
I guess the real answer is that you will need to know whether the security update has already been installed on your new computer. If it has, then you should wait until Adobe have a fix for the problem before you install Photoshop.
If it hasn't, install Photoshop BEFORE you upgrade with the Security Update, and don't re-install it thereafter until the Adobe fix arrives. You should also remove the relevant startup file, just to be on the safe side.
So whoever warned you about installing it was doing you a favour, and a "simple google search", might have got you into quite a lot of strife!
    Cheers

  • EA Game (Harry Potter Deluxe Edition) will not play on iMac Intel Core Duo

I have repeatedly tried opening the EA/Aspyr Harry Potter games (Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets) on my iMac intel core duo. It fails to open, with all attempts ending in a window that tells me it has failed and offering the option to cancel, retry, or report problem to Apple. This occurs with both discs/games. Is the software simply not advanced enough for the new iMac? Has anyone opened this at all?

  • Problems with Windows Media Player for OSX and IMAC G5 Intel Duo

I was able to download Windows Media Player 9 for Mac but when I surf on the net and I click on the WMP files, instead of opening automatically, it downloads the content and only then lets me open it.
Also, with live streaming, when I click for the window to open it will say that: "Some content on this page requires an Internet plug-in that Safari doesn’t support. The application “Windows Media Player” may be able to display this content. Would you like to try?".
Except that I already downladed WMP... It worked fine with the PowerPc G5 so it must be the Intel chip. Please help.

    Imac G5 20" INtel Duo 2GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Microsoft has abandoned WMP for the Mac and has ceased development. You may wish to consider and alternative!
WMP 9 for Mac is not a Universal binary, so it does not run natively on Intel iMacs. It runs using Rosetta. If the WMP plugin is installed in HD/Library/Internet Plugins/ for it to run usable by Safari you must be using Safari with Rosetta.
    I have two versions of Safari, Safari - Uni & Safari - Rose, Uni runs natively and Rose uses Rosetta. To make a Rose version;
    1. Right-click Safari and choose Duplicate
    2. Rename the copy whatever you like to tell it from the other; ex: Safari - Rose
    3. Right-click Safari - Rose and choose Get Info
    4. In the top pane of the Info window check the box Run using Rosetta.
You need to use Safari -Rose for websites with WMP multimedia material to get it to play in the browser.
    There are also WMP replacements that you can use with Safari such as Flip4Mac and others. Here is a Discussion that covers many of the alternatives;

  • IMac Intel Quad duo & 10.4.5 Update

I have a brand new iMac - it worked perfectly with 10.4.4 which was already installed. I upgraded to 10.4.5 via Software update yesterday. Since then the machine has significantly slowed in response and numerous errors occur.
This morning after checking the discussions for similar 10.4.5 issues (which are numerous) I decided to run a hardware test and the disk repair utilities off the boot disks. No problems were detected during these tests.
Some of the issues I've noticed since upgrading are as follows :
    a. SYSTEM PREFERENCES - generally very slow to open and quit. Especially when opening Date & Time - this seems to hang in both 10.4.4 and 10.4.5. I have the PID sample files if they are required by Apple. THIS HAPPENS IN BOTH 10.4.4 and 10.4.5.
    b. SAFARI refresh much slower e.g Apple home page
    c. iPHOTO 6 crashed on opening. Wouldn't allow me to report a problem despite clicking on "Report Problem". Re-opening of iPhoto mcuh slower as is viewing and scrolling. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN 10.4.4 AFTER I RE-INSTALL FROM BOOT DISKS
    d. iCAL - slowed right down. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN 10.4.4 AFTER I RE-INSTALL FROM BOOT DISKS
    b. GO > NETWORK : no longer works. (it did in 10.4.4 becuase I transferred old files from my old AGP G4 using an Ethernet connection). It appears briefly once only but dissappears immediately. (the time it took 10.4.5 to initiate File sharing on the Intel was four or five times longer than on my Powerbook 800Mhz (File Sharing on both was started at approximately the same time in order to copy files.). THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN 10.4.4 AFTER I RE-INSTALL FROM BOOT DISKS
    d. iTUNES - when playing multiple tracks/playlists it will skip the end of every song and jump into the next. This has never happened before, and I have not configured anything since the new installation and subsequent software upgrade. This happens in 6.0.3 and the newest version - the last 5 seconds are skipped on every track/song/audio/podcast etc. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN 10.4.4 AFTER I RE-INSTALL FROM BOOT DISKS
    e. FRONT ROW took at least three to four minutes looking for artists in my iTunes directory ; eventually the rotating icon dissapeared, and the menu system became responsive again. In 10.4.4, the day before, it all worked instantly, with no delaying rotating icon.THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN 10.4.4 AFTER I RE-INSTALL FROM BOOT DISKS
    f. Accessing .mac account through the System Prefs; again compared to the day before with 10.4.4 it was hugely slower. So slow that I went to make a coffee. (I have a 1.5-1.7Mps broadband connection.).THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN 10.4.4 AFTER I RE-INSTALL FROM BOOT DISKS
I decided to Re-intall 10.4.4 from the boot disks. The customisable options (e.g to turn off Norwegian / Korean fonts; not to re-install iWork trial etc) was not available; it took three attempts for it to recognise that the "install" key had been pressed (I've isolated any mouse issues by using two different mice). There was no need to press three times - it is just slow (10secs +) to respond.
Apart from the SYSTEM PREFERENCES, 10.4.4 is significantly better. You can see by my comments in CAPS in a-f above.
Is anyone else experiencing similar issues or is there a potential issue with my install ?

iMac Intel Quad Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
    G4 AGP 500Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4)

Hi Paul, just wondering, are you a new first-time Mac user? Anyway, FYI, it's a Intel iMac Core Duo, not a "Quad duo", "Core Duo" is the name of the Intel chip iMac is using.
I am hopefullying assuming that there's nothing wrong with the hardware of your iMac, and dives right in what may be the cause of your iMac since the software update.
If you have read enough of this Discussion, you may have come across what is known as the "ritual of doing any Software Updates or Install" as I call it:
1.Before starting Software Update, unplug all external devices, FireWire, USB, hubs etc etc, not just turning them off but unplug the cables off your iMac
    2.Repair Disk Permission
3.Restart the iMac if you wish, then start your SU, do not run any other apps.
4.After finishing SU, restart your mac; If you are updating OS or Security Updates, Restart is required.
    5.Repair Disk Permission again
6.Shutdown and re-plug in everything and start up your mac as normal.
The above procedure is to help prevent any "aftermath" of people experiencing from little problems like general slow down to crashes or Kernel Panic just because they did not repair permisson, or worse, run "tons" of other things while doing SU together as well.
Since you have re-install OS, you can try again to do the Software Update, but maybe this time you can follow the suggested procedures, it works for me and ever since the very first OS X 10.4.1 update until now, I have not experience any major problems on my 3 macs.
    Cheers

Any ideas what gives? Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Usually when it's the Apple apps that are crashing,
it's often a font conflict. Printers, scanners and apps load on fonts
that may cause problems with the original font setup.
A quick way to check that is to:
Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates.
A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family.
You can resolve duplicates by selecting the each bulleted font
(one at a time) and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
If you try the above, and still have problems,
I highly recommend that you post this over in the Intel Based iMac Forum
    here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1110
This is assuming that after you loaded on major programs & updates,
that you repaired permissions. Section A from Trav's Tips below:

Can I install Mac OS 10.4.7 CD's that came from an imac intel chip (Jan 2007) ONTO an ibook power pc G3? The ibook only has a CD drive and I believe the OS installs are CD's not DVD's as there are 2 of them. The ibook currently is running OS 10.3.9 with 23 GB on the HD at the moment. I may be able to free up some space though by dumping Microsoft Office. I know for sure I had 10.4.7 on there before but I got a used HD and there is only 10.3.9 on it. Sigh.

Nope, sorry wont work, those are Machine & Architecture specific Install Discs.
See Tom's, (Texas Mac Man), great info on where/how to find/get Tiger...

  • 20" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo Display problems.

It was hard trying to sum up my problem for the thread title... so let me try and describe what I am experiencing a bit more clearly.
I have recently acquired a 20" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo,2 GHz(aluminum body black plastic back)-with display issues...
The problem is basically that there appears to be no happy middle ground in regards to contrast- it is either WAY too white or WAY too black... I would have to say it is more of an issue with CONTRAST than brightness, it appears that nothing I can do in calibrating the screen really matters.
I have calibrated displays before and never had this sort of issue. It is pretty bad (for example): a royal blue appears as black or gray mac highlight color choice appears as black.... white and medium grays appear indistinguishable.
all this in addition to the fact that there appears to be a gradient to the screen when you display a solid color neutral back ground, not too mention that it is VERY hard to look at this screen for very long and for what I do( 3D model making and texture creation) the display is pretty useless.
I have read about similar issues with this model's screen at other sites, but most of the threads ended without being resolved and were more than a year old.
This machine belonged to my in-laws and according to them, it always looked this way and when they took to back to the Apple store few weeks after purchasing it( brand new), they were told there was "nothing wrong with the display, it's supposed to look that way"... the machine was hardly used(just for iChating with our infant daughters), so I don't really think it is an issue with age or anything.
Now here is the really weird part:
I just upgraded the OS from 10.4 to 10.5 and when the machine first displayed the default 10.5 background(the Nebula one... blueish-pink with stars)... as it was going though the start up IT LOOKED RIGHT.
Once everything was done and all my icons appeared- Boom! Back to ugly.
I have noticed the same thing occur if I shut down the machine.
Startup screen, the default (nebula)background(my choice of background) comes up... it looks fine, the icons start to show up... everything still looks good and then when everything is done... BAM! UGLY!
I'm not sure what to make of this... any suggestions
One last thing- I am VERY familiar with the default background for OS 10.5, I have used it on my iMac G5 for over 2 years. When I say the displayed "looked right" I mean, it looked like what I was used to and how it appears on other machines.
Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.

    mcgyver,
If start up and shut down look correct then something is set or corrupt in the user options. To test this, add a new user and signon as them.
    Regards
Edit: I don't use 10.5.8 anymore so the following suggestions are for 10.6.5.
The things that may affect your display are:
System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing Tab. Display: Make sure Enhance contrast slider is set to normal. Use grayscale is unchecked.
System Preferences > Displays > Color tab > Display profile set to display or iMac. Whatever the default is on your system.
