Intel Duo iMac FCP Specs
The intel iMac seems like a great way of getting a cheap suite to do an edit before taking the project over to the G5 for titling and SFX etc. I was wondering how much difference added memory and an improved graphics card will make.....
I'm going to be editing HDV footage, assuming Motion etc to be too slow on it. I have a G5 suite already so am looking to keep costs low- my setup would be
17-inch widescreen
1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor
1GB RAM
ATI Radeon X1600 graphics with 128MB GDDR3 memory
Is this really cutting corners?
I hoped to be able to author DVDs though, using DVDSP4- would the iMac take a week to burn a disk?
Does anyone have an Intel iMac? I'm aware of having to wait 4 weeks for the Universal software and am happy with this, but have some concerns about the hardware.
Many thanks for any advice, its all a little confusing.....
Oliver Gray
Dunno for sure, but I'd guess the ATI Radeon x1600 is faster (and I know it has more VRAM) than my lil ole 64mb ATI 9600 that I'm running Motion on at home...Plus, the processor beats my Dual 1ghz DPMD G4 and that handles FCP5 just fine along with DVDSP...

Install issue ARD on imac intel duo G5
On installing Remote Desktop Administrator then the update to 2.2, I get the following error:
"The Remote Desktop Administrator software failed to start due to an unexpected error.
The Remote Desktop software may not be installed correctlyor the computer may require a restart."
I've run it just fine on an older 10.4.5 G3 533 mhz dual and never had an issue. Is there some update the intel duo imac needs? It's 2.0 ghz. I've restarted, cold-booted several times as well as restarted, resinstalled, removed the .pref file and reinstalled all to no avail. If anyone can make any suggestions I appreciate it.ARD 2.2 will not work Intel Macs without modifying items in the System folder.
Even then it will not be supported by Apple, so use at your own risk.
Simply do the following:
Ensure ARDAgent.app is not running (make sure that Remote Desktop is disabled in System Preferences -> Sharing)
Then go to System --> Library --> CoreServices --> RemoteManagement in the Finder, and Get Info on ARDAgent.app. Check "Open using Rosetta".
Also, since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic before you post a question. -
Major problems with my new intel g5 imac
I recently purchased a the new Intel duo imac (20", 512 ram). The computer has been a total nightmare and I finally have a little bit of time available to hopefully start addressing some of the major issues. When I first got the system, I easily hooked it up and starting using it, everything appeared to be fine. However, I began to notice almost all the applications were unstable and always lagging. For example, the pinwheel idle icon would come up for seconds at a time while switching from safari to itunes on the bottom dock. I installed CS2 on it and realized it was barely useable, it would always crash at least once or twice during a session. The application itself was so slow, it was painstaking just to clone or resize an image. I was really frustrated at this point because the system ran extremely slow compared to my 4 year old PC, which ran photoshop and the internet flawlessly. I thought that maybe I needed to start updating the OS, because I was always prompted to do so when I would start the system up.
I was hoping maybe the updates would make the system more stable and fix the problems I was having. I went ahead and approved all the updates to the OS etc. The update on the OS was around 190 megs, so I went to dinner and came back. When I got home it told me the updates where complete, I just needed to restart. Upon restarting I was met with a flashing Apple, the system would not allow me to get into the OS, it was stuck at start up with a flashing apple with an X through it. I did nothing but download the updates and restart. After an hour of trying to boot up in every why possible, I finally had to boot from CD, nothing solved the problem (disk repair etc). I finally had to break down and reinstall the OS.
Now I am back to square one again, the system is useable but every application is painfully slow. I can't for example, Use Safari, listen to itunes and type in Word. It has to be one or the other, if not the lag is unbearable. Photoshop CS2 is once again barely useable, when you start the application up you can literally read every name that comes up in the splash screen because it goes so slowly (on my PC all that start up info flew by so fast I couldn't make out any of it).
I am at my wits end with it because I love the system I just need it to be functional. I was on some other forums and people suggested I had bad ram, but I have no way to test if the ram is actually bad. Others said I was a moron for trying to run CS2 on a intel mac because it barely works (go figure). They said my only option to running decent applications like photoshop consistently was to install boot camp then windows. I don't want the solution to my problems to be the installation of an OS that I am trying to move away from, because of its supposed inferiority. I think it's sad that people need to install windows just to run photoshop and/or any software with high requirements because the new Intel mac does such a poor job. I know I need to update the system and the OS, but I don't want to have to reinstall and lose everything if it fails upon restarting again. I want things to stop crashing out of no where. Can someone please help me.
Some screen captures of some crashes.

PS: I Xbenched my Imac I got a score of 50.05 the average for all is 65.48 Why is that?
Respectfully,
-sbI do know that it is easy enough to test the RAM yourself to a fairly good degree.
Memtest is simply the best ram-testing utility for the Macintosh platform with the ability to find intermittent memory problems that are the frequent cause of unexplained crashes or freezes in Macs running MacOSX. Memtest can identify random memory problems that commercially available utilities miss completely.
Memtest 4.13 is now distributed as a universal binary. Just double-click the OS X image file to mount it and then double click the package file to install. Besides providing support for the new Intel-based Macs, version 4.13 also adds improved status reporting for each of the individual tests.
http://www.memtestosx.org/
Memory: 512MB is very minimal. Meaning programs may not have enough to load into memory or take advantage of OS X memory management. Rosetta is almost a mini-OS but very RAM hungry. If you can, I would add another 1GB of memory at a minimum. But first test what you have now.
Also, do run Apple Hardware Test fully as well.
In a very rare case, it could be the disk drive itself that just needs to be erased.
Have you tried repairing your disk drive from the Install DVD? good idea. And backup your system and files to FireWire goes mostly without saying as essential.
If your system does do a forced shutdown/freeze, I would not rely on it repairing itself, I like to boot into Single User Mode (command + s) and run the fsck routine.
CS3 will not be out for -?- 9 months or more and then be "Universal Binary" format. Until then, well, CS2 is itself memory hungry and people buy G5s etc so that they can use 4GB RAM or more.
The ideal would be to upgrade to 2GB RAM, Micron/Crucial or Samsung as well as RAMjet, some place reliable and that warrants their memory fully. I don't think you'll be happy with just the 512MB. And everything was fine to begin with, so that's good.
And there probably are some special concerns with Photoshop, with plug-ins or other applications, or just a corrupt plist/pref file.
Without "adequate" or enough memory, any OS is going to page itself to death, 'thrashing' as it is unable to page into memory enough to run properly.
OS: 80-200MB
Safari or web browser: 80-400MB

I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram. Will I be able to run Lightroom 5 okay if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion? What will happen to the applications that aren't 64-bit compatible? Also the Eye-one Display 2 colorimeter to calibrate the monitor will not run on Lion, so that will be an expensive upgrade to an i1DisplayPro. Is the upgrade important enough to offset the expense? I have an Epson R2000 printer. Will there be problems with the drivers if I upgrade to Lion? It would be great to hear from other mac users who are also photographers and who print their own photos.
Before upgrading to Lion be sure to read this link:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
Adobe lists these requirements:
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html
Looking at http://www.everymac.com/ even the earliest 2008 iMac was fully 64 bit, even though Boot Camp doesn't support 64 bit Windows on that machine. -

Have a 3.06GHz intel core 2 duo for FCP?
I all... I have a 3.06GHz intel core 2 duo IMac that I'm using for FCP.
At 3+ years old, I'm wondering if it's time to invest in a new Imac?
GHz speeds haven't gone up by a lot but I have to believe that speeds have?
Are render times in FCP or Compressor substantially improved to justify this purchase?
Thanks so much for your help!
- BKIf you want flexibility then consider moving up to a mac pro, that'll give you a solid base for a performance boost. Unless theres anything wrong with your current machine, you might want to wait a month or so and see what kind of horsepower the new version FCPX plays best with.
cheers

Need to Install Safari 6.0.2 on a white Intel core duo iMac. Had to throw out 6.0.3 because of conflict with required software. Downloaded wrong version that was for Mountain lion (I am running 10.7.5). It installs but won't open, says it is for Mountian Lion.
Of course I can't throw it away since I get a message it's part of the sytem. I have two Macs, an i-Mac flat screen that runs on OSX.4.11 and i-tunes 9 and a MacBook Intel Duo that runs on Snow Leopard and i-tunes 10. I have carefully followed all the Advanced instructions for sharing music libraries, which is not a problem; however I am unable to transfer following the instructions to drag the music I want from t he i-Mac flat screen library onto the MacBook. Help! Please! Also, my new Nano will not accept i-tunes 9 which is where I have my old i-pod contents stored--the old i-pod died. Many thanks!
UPDATE: I disconnected the iPhone, restarted it, and tried again to sync it with the iTunes library on the iMac. This time it worked
Now I'm going to try to transfer the music into the iTunes library on the PowerBook, then sync with that, delete the library on the iMac, and sync the (hopefully full of all my music) iPhone with the iMac again.

I'm having no trouble sending stuff from my iPod Touch to my TV via Apple TV, but can't seem to get my
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac to do so, as the mirror icon is not appearing in the Menu bar on top.
1. Can my processor mirror?
2. If so, how do I get the iCon to appear in the Menu barLooking at your processor, you haven't got a compatible Mac. AirPlay Mirroring requires a Mid 2011 or newer iMac > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
To mirror the Mac's display to the Apple TV, use an application like AirParrot or Beamer > http://www.airparrot.com
If you want to use AirPlay to send music or videos to the Apple TV, open iTunes and you should see the AirPlay icon on the iTunes toolbar -
Problems with Windows Media Player for OSX and IMAC G5 Intel Duo
I was able to download Windows Media Player 9 for Mac but when I surf on the net and I click on the WMP files, instead of opening automatically, it downloads the content and only then lets me open it.
Also, with live streaming, when I click for the window to open it will say that: "Some content on this page requires an Internet plug-in that Safari doesn’t support. The application “Windows Media Player” may be able to display this content. Would you like to try?".
Except that I already downladed WMP... It worked fine with the PowerPc G5 so it must be the Intel chip. Please help.

Imac G5 20" INtel Duo 2GHZ Mac OS X (10.4.6)
Imac G5 20" INtel Duo 2GHZ Mac OS X (10.4.6)Microsoft has abandoned WMP for the Mac and has ceased development. You may wish to consider and alternative!
WMP 9 for Mac is not a Universal binary, so it does not run natively on Intel iMacs. It runs using Rosetta. If the WMP plugin is installed in HD/Library/Internet Plugins/ for it to run usable by Safari you must be using Safari with Rosetta.
I have two versions of Safari, Safari - Uni & Safari - Rose, Uni runs natively and Rose uses Rosetta. To make a Rose version;
1. Right-click Safari and choose Duplicate
2. Rename the copy whatever you like to tell it from the other; ex: Safari - Rose
3. Right-click Safari - Rose and choose Get Info
4. In the top pane of the Info window check the box Run using Rosetta.
You need to use Safari -Rose for websites with WMP multimedia material to get it to play in the browser.
There are also WMP replacements that you can use with Safari such as Flip4Mac and others. Here is a Discussion that covers many of the alternatives;

New iMac w. Intel Duo 2 Core - Apple Applications keep crashing
Any ideas what gives? I'm new to iMac and so far the experience has not been good ... the Apple applications (i* apps, safari, mail, dashboard, finder, even system preferences!) keep crashing hard with kernel exceptions. I haven't installed anything other than Apple software, so I don't know what gives. Looking for suggestions/help on what this could be. Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Usually when it's the Apple apps that are crashing,
it's often a font conflict. Printers, scanners and apps load on fonts
that may cause problems with the original font setup.
A quick way to check that is to:
Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates.
A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family.
You can resolve duplicates by selecting the each bulleted font
(one at a time) and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
If you try the above, and still have problems,
I highly recommend that you post this over in the Intel Based iMac Forum
here:

This is assuming that after you loaded on major programs & updates,
that you repaired permissions. Section A from Trav's Tips below:

Is there a virtual pc or Windows emulator for iMac intel duo?
Hi there,
I just got a new iMac intel duo last week and its fantastic. Unfornatuly I need to run a stock market program that only runs on windows...
This is the only program that i need to run on the windows platform.
I was told to get the intel duo as it was the way things were going and that I may have to wait for the software side of things to catch up.
I currently have a workaround that is painfull, but I would like to have it all on the one machine...
Is there a virtual pc version for the iMac intel duo or are there other emulators I could use??
Desparate..
iMac intel, 2G memory Mac OS X (10.4.4)Thanks for the advice... does anyone else know of another product? I heard that the responce time for it wasn't good?
