Intel GMA 965 - Macbook

Any clues as to when the GMA 950 integrated graphics will be replaced by the GMA 965, now that it's released ....

  • External Monitor - MacBook - Intel GMA 945

    Hey guys,
I've run into a problem running Windows Vista Ultimate on my 1st gen Macbook with Intel GMA 945 chipset. I have upgraded to Leopard.
Running a Mini-DVI to DVI converter and connecting to my LCD does not work any longer.
    * I have run the external monitor on XP and Vista on previous versions of Bootcamp.
    * The external monitor works fine on the Leopard side.
    * When I plug in the cable my MacBook screen "flickers" - as if the graphics card detects the external monitor.
    * When plugged in, the inbuilt Intel GMA 945 graphics driver does not display the option to "Output to" - something it did on previous versions of bootcamp.
    * The inbuilt Vista multiple monitor detect thingo no longer pops up when I connect my monitor.
    * My LCD monitor says that there is "No sync detected" when I plug in the cable.

Sorry for reviving this thread from the dead, but I found a workaround and wanted to share it:
As mentioned on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/796030 this is a known(?) bug with Kernel versions newer than 2.6.34.
So after downgrading to this version I was able to use the full resolution of the screen, but with a ~ 200pixel wide stripe missing between the monitors (External left of internal => virtual Screen of 3200*1200) and a equally sized stripe of the most left screen on the most right side. This stripe was only missing for the screen, but not for the mousecursor => If I wanted to press a button I had to press it ~200pixel right of it
(But I was able to use Composite Effects in Compiz)
This was resolved by disabling Composite in xorg.conf
    not the full xorg.conf
    Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Disable"
    EndSection

  • Intel GMA and OpenGL 1.2... update? Even the Radeon 7000 supports 1.3!

It seems that on several large projects (VMWare, a few games out there being developed for OS X too), the issue of the Intel GMAs not having proper OpenGL support in Apple's drivers have been a problem for months now.
The thing is, the GMA 950 is capable of OpenGL 1.4 functions, the GMA X3100 is capable of OpenGL 1.5 functions. Unfortunately, the drivers for both have never been updated past 1.2...
What's going on?! As usual the only two ways to fix this are workarounds (disabling multi-texturing for example, something that has to be done by the developer), or simply booting into Windows where Intel actually took writing the driver seriously.
I understand that Intel and Apple are supposed to have something special going on (promising more custom projects like the MacBook Air), but why are they not keeping these things more on top of the ball?
If there haven't been any bug reports about it, take this one as a big one. I'm sure that a lot of people (even those who don't know why MacBooks and Mac Minis can't run certain programs they wish to use in OS X), would appreciate it.
    Thank you.

  • Adding more RAM to Intel GMA 950?

So I've had my iMac (see bottom of post for specs) for a while now and I love everything about it, except the Intel GMA 950 intergrated graphics. It works, but as far as games go, I can hardly play Halo. It's gotten better since 10.5.6 seeing as it boosts graphics performance, but it could be better.
I'm aware that it's VRAM is shared with system memory, so is there any way I can give the chip more of the system RAM to use? 2gb is plenty, so I'm willing to share some. Any help is appreciated.

    Jerroslaw,
since you’re running Mavericks, open up Activity Monitor while you’ve got your usual selection of apps running, select its Memory tab, and look at the Swap Used setting in the lower left. If it’s displaying “0 bytes” as the amount of swap used, then extra RAM won’t make a difference. Otherwise, to answer your first question, whether it’s worth it or not depends upon how frustrated you are running your usual selection of apps with 4 GB of RAM. It might be that the cost of replacement RAM modules outweighs your level of frustration — only you can make that determination of worth. I would recommend that if you do choose to purchase replacement RAM, that you get a pair of matching modules — either 2 × 4 GB = 8 GB, or 2 × 8 GB = 16 GB, to replace the pair that is currently installed.
For your second question, you don’t have to use Apple-brand RAM, but you do have to use RAM with the same characteristics as your factory-installed RAM uses. Any worthwhile purveyor of RAM for Macs will let you easily locate modules that are compatible with your Mid 2012 MacBook Pro.

  • Intel GMA X3100: could you guys let me know what games run well?

i purchased a macbook 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and was wondering if you guys could let me know some games you may have had experiance with that run within a decent range of quality (that also isnt 27 years old) with the Intel GMA X3100 processor. im not a HUGE gamer looking to play doom 3 or anything. just browseing the market, trying to see what games i should even consider looking into.
so far looks like the upcomming game Spore will run and so will age of empires 3.

    See these benchmarks:

PRO GRAPHICS SHOOTOUT: MacBook 2.2GHz "Rosa" with GMA X3100 versus 2 rival Mac laptops

  • Radeon 9000 vs Intel GMA X3100 graphics

    which is better Radeon 9000
    or the intel GMA x3100
    graphics card
because i want to play sims 2 on a new macbook
    thanks

    Good morning,
Well, this is not an easy, clear cut question. The Radeon is an old, out of date card however it does have a dedicated GPU and Memory on board. The 3100 is an integrated chip with shared system memory, however, it is much newer and up to date.
I'd put my money on the 3100 myself, however, neither is really up to the task of playing The Sims 2 in my opinion, that game (on the PC) taxed my CoreDuo with a GeForce 7900GT. :P
    Hope this helps! 

  • Is Intel GMA X3100 graphics enough?

Does anyone know if the updated MacBooks with the Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor now supports some of the build transitions that were previously unavailable (burn, flash etc...)
    Thanks

Good question. I'll have to stop by my local Apple Store to check (I was there during the Leopard release, but didn't look specifically for that).

  • Will Diablo 2 work in bootcamp or parallels with the Intel GMA X3100?

I have the Intel GMA X3100 graphics card on my new macbook which seems to be incompatible with Diablo 2. Usually you have to install a beta copy to run it, which is incompatible with Battle.net. If I install parallels or boot camp, will I be able to play Diablo 2 on battle.net?

You need to use the Diablo II native installer.
    http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=20758
So, you download it, run it, and it will ask you to insert your play discs.
But for myself that didn't work. The game was originally written for OS 9 so it seems to have issues I think.
If that native installer doesn't work then you can install windows on boot camp. All you need is a copy of XP SP2 disc or Vista SP1. Then you can run the boot camp utility (That will create disc space for windows, or called partitioning). I would recommend running any games in boot camp than parallels/VMware fusion. In virtualization(What parallels/VMware does) you're running windows on top of OS X, which eats up a lot more hardware resources.

  • Will Diablo 2 work in parallels even if I'm using an Intel GMA X3100?

I know that Diablo 2 won't work normally (without downloading extra software) in 10.5.5 with the Intel GMA X3100. Will Diablo work in parallels with these settings though? How about in boot camp? How about in 10.5.6? This is on my refurbished macbook.

  • Blurry Cover Flow Scrollbar on Intel-GMA Macs?

I noticed many people are suffering the blurry cover flow scrollbars in iTunes ever since 7.0.0, it never got better even in 7.1. While other people are saying no problems at all no matter what they do.
Also it seems this bug only happens on Macbooks and Mac-minis, both of which are using intel-GMA graphic cards. I don't know what Mac are being used in the development of iTunes, but I think Macbook Pros and iMacs are preferred. The developpers may never know this. And I think the difference between intel Graphic Units and independent Graphic cards may lead this problem.
Let's hope developpers to solve this. Does this problem happen on other kind of Mac?

I had actually not encountered this little quirk until I updated my Mac mini to 10.4.9... when I did, this occured. Happens in the iTunes window (which is temporarily fixed by adjusting the Cover Flow display size) and in full-screen, both the scrollbar and the volume toggle are blurry. Updated from 7.1 to 7.1.1, same thing. Tried in another user account, same thing. I deleted my root-level cache (/Library/Caches), same thing. Aside from totally re-installing iTunes, I'm at a loss as to what to do, and it's such a minor thing that re-installing the application seems pretty drastic. Hope someone figures this out. Definitely gonna keep plugging away at this, though, and I'll post if I figure out if there's a fix for this.

  • 64MB GeForce FX Go5200 vs. 64MB (shared) Intel GMA 950 - Which is better???

    I currently have a July '04 PowerBook G4 w/ a 64MB GeForce FX Go5200 with 768MB of main memory
I'm thinking about purchasing a MacBook (Black) with Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory
1- Which graphics processor is better, which will yeild "better" graphics?
2- What does it mean "shared" with main memory, is this good or bad?
3- I was planning on getting 1GB of memory for the MacBook, I don't need 2GB's as I have that in my iMac. How much of my main memory will be drawn on to perform graphics tasks and will I need more than 1GB to get the 1GB feeling?
    Thanks in advance,

    Welcome to the discussions!
While I do not have exact numbers, the GMA950 is quite a bit better than even a more recent video card than the Go5200. Arc Technica did a review of the MB back in May and in their benchmarks, they found that in some cases the MB beat the MBP.
That said, you will really only notice the difference if you were gaming on the MB.
The shared memory simply means that a portion of the system memory is set aside for the graphics. Generally, it is considered bad, but again - for gaming.
According to Apple, the GMA950 uses 80GB of the system memory, but can use more depending on the system's needs.

  • I have a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro that has lion installed when I recieved it, according to the support pages AHT is supposed to work over the internet if it wasn't installed, Mine wasn't and it doesn't work. Where can I download it from?

I Have a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro, I recieved it with OSx 7.2 lion installed, I need to us AHT (apple hardware test) according to the support page that I copy here
    Additional Information
Apple Hardware Test is included on the DVDs that are shipped with some Macintosh computers. If the copy on your hard drive becomes unavailable, use the DVDs to run Apple Hardware Test.
For Intel-based Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.4  or earlier, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Mac OS X Install Disc 1  and should be included with your computer.
For Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.5 to 10.6.7, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Applications Install  Disc 2 and should be included with your computer.
For some Apple computers that shipped with OS X Lion, if Apple Hardware Test cannot be found on the hard drive, an Internet-based version starts up instead.
This doesn't work as the additional information statement says it should above.  Could someone at apple give me an idea of where to get it or what the "REAL" solution is, since it doesn't work on an internet version which was confirmed today at the Genius Bar in the Apple store.
    Please help me

Thanks, while it worked on yours it doesn't work on mine, any other ideas?
Are you holding down the "d" key, all by itself, just after the system shuts down for a restart?
And how long did you hold it down?
I held mine down for about 40-50 seconds. Then I lookat at my routers WAN light and it was flickering so I let up on the d key.
If that does not work then maybe there is something wrong with your MBP. Is that the reason you want to run this test, something isn't right with your unit?

  • Intel GMA 945: xrandr trouble

    Hello everyone,
I recently observed that when rotating the screen using xrandr -o, it becomes very dark. I'm on a Thinkpad X60 Tablet with Intel GMA 945 and up to date intel driver and Xorg. I have checked this on a laptop of the same model by a friend also running Arch and she has the same problem. A few months ago, there were no problems with this functionality, although I am unsure when exactly it happened. I don't know which software is to blame either, so I would kindly ask other GMA 945 family users to check if they also have this problem on their machines. Maybe we can bugtrack this together.

I'm facing similar problems with an Thinkpad X60 (Intel 945GM):
Switching with xrandr to the external monitor and disabling the notebook screen works fine. Afterwards if I want to switch back from external monitor to the internal screen, the internal screen does not turn on and stays black.
Suspending before switching back is a dirty workaround but not really a solution.

  • Intel gma 4500mhd with displayport

    Hello.
I have lenovo t500 (2055-2MG) and Dell 24" ultrasharp U2414H monitor. I connected it with displayport - minidisplayport to the notebook, but it does not work with intel gma 4500Mhd. The display shows No signal. I use Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit version.
I read about T410, that displayport is disabled on integrated graphics. Is it concerns for t500 also?
How can I use this integrated graphics with this external monitor?
    Thank you.

Try downgrading the intel video driver and disabeling KMS. I have the same chipset and exactly the same problems with xfce4-power-manager.
    "I downgraded xf86-video-intel (2.10.0-1 -> 2.9.1-1) (+ disable KMS) and now everything works fine."
Thanks for the help! I've tried what you said above and disabled KMS as explained on http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel. Disabling KMS didn't work with 2.10.0-1, but it did with 2.9.1.1.
I havn't been able to test wheter or not this solves the problems yet. It seams to me that the screen brightness is lower now, and that's good. However, for the screen-flickering problem I'm not sure if it's gone or not yet, and as for the the weirdness of the Power Management it is still there (it is still increasing the brightness lowers the brightness instead). However, that's a minor problem compared to the brightness changing itself all the time.
