Intel gma945, mesa 7.5.1 slowish performance?

im running kernel 2.6.31-rc9 for the record:
installing mesa 7.5.1 and all its deps for intel hardware drops from 800ish fps to about 400fps
downgrading to 7.5-2 and all packages linked to it fixes it.. anyone felt the hit?
packages which needed downgrading are
intel-dri 7.5.1-1 --> 7.5-2
mesa 7.5.1-1 --> 7.5-2
libgl 7.5.1-1 --> 7.5-2
xf86-video-intel 2.8.1-1 --> 2.7.99.902-1
any of these packages could be the culprit....

  • Xorg - Intel GMA945 - Can't get it to work

    Hi,
    It's been quite some time now that i am trying to run my X server on my Macbook. The graphics processor is an Intel GMA945, I've tried all version of xf86-video-intel, with xorg.conf, without, with different settings and options in xorg.conf. Nothing works.
    In most cases with the most recent version of xf86-video-intel (git or testing/), I just get a grey/back screen with my cursor, which eventually freezes after some time. The whole system is not frozen I can still SSH, but the whole display is stuck. CTRL-ALT-F[1-9] won't work, the only thing I can do is reboot. With the driver version in extra/ it works most of the time, if I specify to the driver in my xorg.conf to use XAA (instead of EXA or UXA which simply won't launch). But that leads to miscellaneous problems, such as font scrambling, and random freezes etc. And when it works, with xcompmgr launched there are some issues.
    The funny thing is that I've been able to run the latest drivers with UXA, compositing, DRI2 and all (even played OpenGL games! \o/), but after a reboot it all went back to the old crap.
    I love Arch, I love linux, I love open source, but I'm sick of it not working T__T. I am not blaming anyone, I could go ahead and but I can understand better why people don't use it (:

    I updated all graphics related packages to git versions. That is:
    intel-dri
    mesa
    libgl
    dri2proto
    glproto
    xf86-video-intel
    The only I got my X to launch without freezing was to add:
      Option        "DRI" "false"
    To the Device section.
    But this setup doesn't work properly. I get random freezes. I can still move the mouse and see the cursor moving on screen, but nothing else. Changing to a VT1 (CTRL ALT F1) or any other one, "un-freezes" the X server. And when I return to X I can see that things I typed had been taken into account. (For example while writing this message, it hanged, I continued typing some characters, and when I came back to X after doing the "un-freezing" thing, the things I typed were there).
    Also my fonts and others things like images (suck as the website icon on the firefox tab) get scrambled too.
    I tried without a xorg.conf, X launches but I can only see my cursor and a black screen. I can move the cursor but can't do anything else, like changing to another VT.

  • Dell 1564 - Intel I5-M430 - Overheating issues, very slow performance

    Hi,
    I have a dell 1564, with an I5 M430 cpu. I have cooling issues and as a result my CPU temperature peaks close to 90~95 degree Celsius sometimes on extended full cpu usage. In such situations , I cut down my usage , and manage to bring the temperature down back to reasnoble ranges of 60~75 degrees. However often in these situations even after cooling down, my cpu performance becomes very miserable. Normal browsing which usually uses 10~15% cpu show up as taking 80~90% cpu (as per top/ and other process monitors). I ran the "N-Queens" benchmark from  hardinfo show drastically reduced performance. Post overheating the benchmark takes 35s, after a reboot it takes only 7seconds. I'm trying to track down the reason for this but can't seem to figure out what's the issue. Can someone help me out in this? I'm basically looking for a solution where I don't have to reboot every time I cross the temperature threshold just to get normal CPU performance again. Ideally if its downclocking somehow I'm hoping that it should reset back normally after temperature returns to normal ranges.
    Stuff I've tried:
    * dmesg : No new messages added during/after the overheating
    * cpu scaling : cpu frequency reported by /proc/cpuinfo are back to the normal 2.26 GHz which is my peak scaling. Also I've tried all scaling governors , and even locking the frequency to 2.26GHz , doesn't seem to bring back the performance.
    * suspending and resuming , in hopes of reseting any CPU modes. No luck, CPU still in bad performance. Only a reboot fixes it.

    Any suggestions , to either fix this , or ways to track down the issue, will be much appreciated. Will be happy to provide more details , logs, or specs if required. I'm right now totally clueless as to even how to figure out what's going wrong so anything is welcome.

    The one thing that sticks out is Firefox is using an excessive amount of CPU resources.  Delete Firefox and see if there is an improvement.

  • Intel Duo Core vs. Quad Core performance issues

    I'm comparing performance of my multi-threaded server software on two machines and three OSes and finding some puzzling results.
    Computer #1
    Intel® Core 2 Duo (T7500)
    2GB RAM
    4M Cache, 2.20 GHz, 800 MHz FSB
    Mac OS X 10.6
    Java 1.6u17 (Java HotSpot 64-Bit Server VM)

    Intel® Core 2 Quad (Q8300)
    8GB RAM
    4M Cache, 2.50 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB
    Ubuntu 9.10 or Windows 7
    Java 1.6u17 (Java HotSpot 64-Bit Server VM)
    Results:
    Surprisingly, my Java program runs significantly faster on the Mac (Computer #1) than on the PC (Computer #2) running either Linux or Windows. The latter runs at 60%-75% of the speed as the Mac.
    I'm not understanding this as the Mac is 3 years old and has a slower clock speed than the PC which I literally just purchased.
    Experiments:
    -tried testing with both Java 1.6u19 and a 1.7 beta on Ubuntu, saw improvements of up to ~10% on the PC
    -disabled 2 cores in Windows 7 so that's it's duo vs. duo instead of duo vs. quad; no difference
    -changed the Ubuntu processor setting to "Performance" instead of a power saving/efficiency mode, no difference
    -tried -Xconcurrentio on the PC, no difference
    I reckon I'll have to go into profiling the code to shed some more light on this, but thought I'd ask if anyone has seen this sort of thing. I'm not comparing apples and oranges, am I?

    I notice the Mac processor has a bus/core ratio of 11 while the PC has 7.5.
    7.5/11 = 68%, coincidence?!

    Harm is correct, look at the Premiere Pro CS4 Benchmark (PPBM4) results and see the result for those two processors.  While you do get a small incremental inprovement it probably is not with the cost.

  • 32-bit Intel CPU + Wine + Intel GMA945

    So this weekend I decided to try installing Touhou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom on my laptop. I already had Wine installed to run a PC98 emulator, so I assumed it would work fine.
    I get a waterfall of errors whenever I try to run wine th07.exe claiming that the setting the pixel format failed, "call to IWineD3DDevice_CreateSwapChain failed" and that it can't create the front buffer. Who would have thought a search for "failed to create the front buffer" would only return Wine source code?
    I tried downgrading to xf86-video-intel-legacy to see if that would actually change anything, and it did. I got the game to run, but at about 1-2fps and with horrible texture issues. I got an error saying it couldn't use GEM so it downgraded to default; looking that up hints that my (stock Arch) kernel would have PAE enabled and that would be causing it.
    edit: Forgot to mention, I have since gone back to the latest xf86-video-intel, and I do appear to have GEM working when grepping glxinfo for it.
    I've searched the board for issues similar to this and all I've found are problems related to Wine on 64-bit systems, and people are recommended to install nvidia-utils. That won't install (as intel-dri requires libgl, and nvidia-utils conflicts with libgl), and besides, I somehow nvidia would magically make Intel cards work right with Wine.
    Does anyone have an idea what might be up? I've spent literally all night trying stuff and nothing worked.
    If anyone needs me to post config files or output from a command, let me know which ones.

    Hmm, I used to play this same game in wine, and it worked perfectly. (this was a year ago before all the xorg/intel upgrading) I just tried executing th07.exe in wine, and now it no longer works... I tried it in an old wine prefix to a wine  version I know used to play it, and it still fails... no idea what the problem is...
    So yeah... i guess if you want it to work you need some different xorg/intel driver combination...

  • How to make xf86-video-intel Stable (crashing every day now)

    Hi.
    Having major issues with the new intel driver.
    It crashes randomly  (every day), when it crashes - machine has locked up, I cannot get to console (ctrl+alt+f1, etc), I can see the mouse pointer and move it , but am unable to do anything else.

    Does anyone know anything I can do to make it more stable, it is a really important desktop that is our office gateway - crashing is not good.
    I have tried nopat and also disabling composite and GLX, still crashes...

    This is my fourth notebook with intel-chipset in about five years and in that whole time I never experienced a driver which was usable. performance has gone from bad to worse with change to UXA acceleration. When I start openarena, it takes about five minutes until whole machine freezes (this is my only way to make the crashes reproducable). On every of my machines for the last years. And every of them had a different chipset.
    I get no messages in any log file and the crash is not reproducable but completely random. Sometimes my machine has no crash for two or three weeks and then it crashes about 10 times a day.
    Meanwhile I am extremely f*ing annoyed by this f*ing drivers, but there's no alternative, especially not in the segment of subnotebooks.
    But, if anyone knows a possibility to get this shitty drivers stable, please let me know.
    Btw. on intel GMA945 it worked much better for me with the following lines in your xorg.conf Device section:
    Option          "AccelMethod" "XAA"
    Option          "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
    Give it a try and wait for your next kernel panic

  • How do I set up Intel Smart Response on my hybrid drive

    I own a HP Pavilion dv6t-7000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC. I have a 1TB hard drive with a 32 GB SSD used for caching and accelerating using Intel's Smart Response Technology and Rapid Storage Technology console. I had to send in my computer for warranty service that included replacing the hard drive. I appears that the SSD may not have been configured.  Below I have screenshots of the screen that now shows after the POST (that didn't appear before I sent it in for service) and the Intel RST console.
    I'm just trying to get it back to its original settings, where it uses Intel's Smart Response Technology to improve performance.  How should I configure the SSD given what shows in the screenshots below?

    It is fixed now. To fix it I did a complete backup of my files and settings, then, in the Accelerate window I clicked on Disassociate. I also reset to SSD to available. After rebooting a couple of times, all appears to be normal.

  • QT not playing sound for MPEG1 files on my Intel Mac

    My QT Pro (latest version, automatically updated regularly) on my new Intel iMac will play the video of MPEG1 files, but no longer plays their audio. The same MPEG1 files play fine on my "Wintel" machine at work using QT for Windows 7.0.4 (the non-Pro version). QT still plays AVI and MOVs fine. Is there a known bug with the Intel version of QT?
    The last time I played an MPEG with no problems was on my older G4 Mac, just before purchasing the Intel Mac one month ago. I performed the software migration from old to new Mac using the Apple's Migration Assistant, then Software Update fetched and installed the newest version of QT. I haven't tried reinstalling an older version of QT yet. I was hoping to find some insight here before doing so.

  • Ultra 24 and Intel Boot Agent

    I recently purchased a Sun Ultra 24, my first foray into the Intel + Solaris arena.
    The machine has performed flawlessly with a number of x86 operating systems, and the BIOS has seemed rock-solid.
    Yesterday, I decided that I would reduce the BIOS boot time by disabling the PXE Boot, by using the BIOS menu option to do so. Following that change, the various operating systems I've tried cannot enumerate or activate the e1000 NIC. I did attempt to re-enable the PIX option in the BIOS, although the IBA doesn't appear any longer unless I reset the defaults with ibautil from DOS. The defaults reset doesn't survive beyond a reboot (the process is: boot using CD containing DOS and the intel proboot utils, execute ibautil -all -defcfg, reboot.) At that point, the menu is present and everything is back to normal. If I again reboot, the IBA menu doesn't appear during POST/boot and I cannot get the e1000 to function an OS.
    Thank you for your time, and any feedback you may be able to offer.
    UPDATE: I went ahead and did something rather unorthodox: On a hunch, I invoked ibautil with the option to enable the boot menu, believing this would force invocation of the IBA and enumeration of the NIC. It does, and the NIC does display activity and link lights at the rear (which it previously wasn't doing following the disabling of IBA in the BIOS). At POST, the IBA does say that it cannot continue due to a corrupt configuration (which I can eliminate with -defcfg, even though defcfg doesn't "stick" beyond a reboot). So, the NIC is working, but I believe the root issue is in being able to access the IBA menu with the option enabled in the BIOS. The IBA menu apparently is set to disabled within the ctrl-s config menu, and with zero seconds wait, which I cannot access to change. As a result, the NIC doesn't initialize at POST, leaving it dead for all practical purposes.
    If any of you know how to re-initialize the IBA ctrl-s properties so as to display ctrl-s normally without the volatile, non-lasting ibautil -defcfg, and without a BIOS update (Sun hasn't released one for this model, yet) I'd love to know how.
    Thanks again, and hopefully this provides some insight into what to avoid when configuring the IBA and e1000 nic on this machine. Hopefully any answers will lead to the solution for those that have run into the issue.

    I also have this problem, but I don't know how it happened. The machine came with Solaris 10 installed and the network interface worked fine. Then I wiped the machine and installed Solaris Express 01/08 and it worked fine. Then from the GRUB boot menu I booted to "Sun xVM Hipervisor" out of curiosity. It booted into Solaris Express, but the network was no longer available (not even listed in ifconfig -a). From that point onward this computer doesn't think it has a network card in it. I've reintalled the OS, tried Indiana builds, etc. The OS installers don't ask me network questions anymore, and people on the install-discuss (solaris) mailing list tell me that it means no network interface was detected.
    From the BIOS's Advanced/Integrated Devices screen I see that "GbE Controller" is Enabled, and "GbE LAN Boot" is Enabled. When I try to access the Intel Management Engine Bios (CTRL-P at boot), it asks me for a password! I don't know what the password is, and it is not mentioned in the manual.
    I don't like the idea of shipping the computer back because I'll just get an other one with the same problem. I guess it's time to call Sun and get some help.

  • Simple game performance question

    Hi all!
    Today I installed a simple Mah Jong game on my mothers Mac mini Core 2 Duo 1.83 GHz. The CPU performance should be roughly the same as on my iMac(as specified below). She uses a VGA display and has 1GB of RAM and this game doesn´t require very much RAM. How important is the graphics adapter for the performance of this very simple game with very little 3D effects as compared to the latest games on a pc? Do I get a speed boost because of 256 MB instead of 128 MB VRAM? Is it just Intel GMA 950 to blame for less performance or has it something to do with the VGA display?

    Probably. Integrated graphics can't match a dedicated graphics card.
    Another possible contributor would be if the Mini with 1 Gig of RAM has a significant number of other memory-consuming programs running at the same time. This would be especially true if any of the programs invoke Rosetta emulation.
    The 2 gig of RAM in the iMac would be a real advantage if it reduces virtual memory activity vis-a-vis the Mini with 1 Gig.
    A fair test would be to make sure no other programs or widgets are running, and then test the game.

  • Dual Computer / Intel-PowerPC Setup

    Hello all,
    I'm thinking of buying an Intel Mac, but I don't want to get rid of my PowerPC computer, because of all the old applications that aren't Intel compatible. My questions are:
    1) How well do Intel Macs emulate with Rosetta (how much performance is lost)?
    2) Can I link up an Intel/PPC configuration using Firewire Target Disk Mode?
    3) Can I link up an Intel/PPC configuration, taking advantage of both processors, running at the same time, using one monitor? (basically, can I combine the two computers to make a supermachine?)
    I think I had more questions... I will post them later if I remember them...

    KVM = Keyboard Video Mouse. They aren't too expensive, just look for the type of ports you are going to need. For the Mac Mini's you will have to get one that uses USB ports. Something like this

  • CS2 on iMac Intel?

    I currently have a 3-year old G4 Powerbook w/ only 768mb of RAM. I'm looking to upgrade to a more powerful machine that can handle tons of large RAW files. My question is a two-parter:
    1) I know Adobe PS CS2 is not universal, but what are the chances of CS2 running smoothly on an Intel iMac w/ 2GB RAM?
    2) Depending on the answer of the question above, would it be a better decision to buy a refurb iMac G5 (w/o the Intel) rather than an Intel iMac?
    Basically, what is my best Apple computer option for running CS2, Aperture 1.1, and other high powered software on the same system at the fastest speed possible all for under $2,500?

    In the interim your could go with a 15" or 17" PowerBook G4, an iMac G5, or Power Mac G5. Adobe CS2 on an Intel at this point will suffer a performance penalty running under Rosseta. Or you can do as earlier suggested, wait until CS3 debuts in 2007.
    Apple has said it would be a year to a year and a half before all programs would be Universal Binaries. Running Aperture on a Mac or Intel Mac would be a smooth process since it is already a Universal Binary. The Adobe CS2 would suffer a noticeable performance penalty.
    A PowerBook G4 w/120GB HD and 2GB of RAM will NOT be a problem. I am using that configuration right now and have not experienced any problems.
    An iMac G5 and a Power Mac G5 have a minimum of 160GB HD's but would surely outperform any Intel Mac at this point because of Rosseta. But for the time being Apple is currently carrying the Power Mac G5 however the cost is twice the amount of an iMac G5 if you can still find one.
    If you do your homework you can find a iMac G5 for $1,000 all over the internet. I've found that a iMac G5 is still a HOT item right now specifically because of the programs which run natively on a G5.
    The G5 is still in demand and those older, wiser folks blessed with plenty of wisdom have known this all along and have waited patiently waiting for the Intel Macs to catch up.

    I would like to ask if current version of Firefox can used Intel AES-NI instruction to accelerate HTTPS performance? (if AES cipher is used of course)

    Has anyone used the intel HD4000 integrated video for group video.
    7-Way requirements:

    A graphics card's perfermance varies GREATLY reguardless of how much memory it has.

    I have to disagree with your direct assessment of the lower end  i7 and the i3.  The bells and whistles (higher DMI, the ability for better performance out of the upgraded video) of that particular i3 may allow it to perform better than the i7 as a total package.  I wouldn't be focused on the i3, i5, i7 mumbo jumbo, just the specs.   I tend to take into consideration what specs are designed to do, focus on the singular component in the evaluation towards the whole to give an over-generalized recommendation.  It would be difficult for anyone to list every possible combination of hardware.  I also don't see them dropping stand-alone dedicated video card requirements any time soon.
    In any case if you notice the trend of the FAQ,  I would infer something closer to a mid-range  i7 similar to the i7-3520 in spec.  That would probably meet the low end of the recommended spectrum (you could always go higher).   As far as video, there seems to be a concern more with processing speed rather than graphics.    The i3 is probably a good budget CPU that meets the requirements of a 7-way call.  You could always get a better video card than the onboard, but I don't see why in this scenario it would substantially bottleneck things.  Even if it did, you could probably pick up an inexpensive/used quality Nvidia or ATI PCIe card that would outperform the onboard.

  • Intel 945 + xorg

    Hi. I have latest Xorg installed (xorg-server 1.1.1-3) and all of the xorg packages but one thing is bothering me. If this is Xorg R7.1 then where is intel driver which is presumed to be better at handling widescreen resolutions than old i810 driver. Or maybe this isn't xorg R7.1?If not , where can I get intel driver (I don't mean "i810" driver for intel based cards but "intel" driver for these cards)??
