Intel iMac 17" 1.83Ghz Memory Issue
Hello,
I recently received an iMac that would not boot. After seeing the ram used was Hynix I figured the RAM was bad (I've had nothing but problem with Hynix in Apple and Dell products).
Turns out I was right; after pulling those out and putting in a stick of Kingston, everything worked.
However, for some reason my iMac can only have 1 stick of RAM in it. The slot doesn't matter, as long as there is only one stick. If I put a second stick in, I get no boot audio and the screen stays black.
I've tried 2 x 1GB DDR2-667 and 2 x 2GB DDR2-667. Tried these in my laptop with memtest86+ and they had no issues. Currently I'm just using 1 x 2GB stick.
At first I was concerned that the memory controller was bad; memtest86 on the iMac would fail regardless of the RAM but this turned out to be an issue with memtest86 and mac hardware.
Does anyone have any suggestions, or has anyone else experienced an issue like this?
I'm open to reinstalling OSX (currently running Ubuntu 8.10 and Windows XP on it) if there are any diagnostic tools on it that may be helpful in finding out what this issue may be.
Thanks
Hi Termina
The Early 2006 Core Duo and Late 2006 17" 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo iMac's only support a total of 2GB of ram.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23843?viewlocale=en_US
2 x 1GB modules would be the maximum ideal upgrade for that system, but if there is a bad slot then you should be fine running the current 1 x2GB module.

Intel iMac freezes, reboots and other issues
Intel iMac 17" 1.83 Ghz model (Had for a while now)
1 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM installed (Mac detects this fine)
Mac OS X 10.4.8
Beginning yesterday, the Mac froze when shutting World of Warcraft (which had been installed and working for at least two months). Computer completely hung. Restarted machine.
A few minutes later, the machine just switched itself off (or appeared to) - screen goes black. I held in power button for five seconds until I heard a click in the machine. This has happened repeatedly.
One time, the machine froze and the monitor refreshed at a visible rate (I could see the scan line) - each time the screen got darker.
Often, it will turn on, but the OS won't load unless I hold Alt down, or if I use OptionAlt+PR.
Ran disk utility from the install disk, only minor issues, all fixed. The problem of turning off still occurred.
Nothing in the kernel panic log. Diagnostics in System Profiler is saying it passes on the power on self test.
The confusing thing is, that after last night, I pulled the plug out, went to bed, praying to the computer fairy to fix it. This morning, it ran fine continuously for about 8 hours, running WoW, IRC app, iTunes etc. all fine.
Could it be a power supply issue? Is the thing overheating (the Mac is up to date with EFI Firmware update and SFC Firmware update).
I'm utterly stumped as to what's causing it. I don't want to send the thing off as then I'm without a computer.
Any ideas or advice?Has it done it since?

Hi, I just thought I would provide my experience here to both see if others have seen and dealt with the issue - and to alert others that this may be something worth considering in upgrading from Mac OSX 10.9.3
My 27" iMac 11,1 update to 10.9.4 was a disaster. From the time I restarted my Mac it bogged down in performance and my applications were being paused (as seen in the Force Quit window). The mermory task_kernel was grabbing over 5 GB of my 8 and not letting go. At idle with no applications running all was fine with memory, but the moment I launched any of my standard browser (Firefox or Safari) or Windows apps (Outlook, PPt, Word, etc) or nearly anything else the Mac ground to a halt and applications were being Paused. Quitting applications did not release memory from task_kernel.
I finally re-installed Maverics from scratch and nothing changed. I tried Disk permissions and cleaning out as much as I dared and re-updating things like Flash but nothing made a difference.
For 3 days I searched all over the net for answers and could only find some reference to changing files that are energy-management related. Apparently this was an issue for many portable users in the upgrade. I tried their work around but this did not work for me either.
Being without a working Mac was getting to be too much so I finally decided to go backwards and used Time Machine (thank you, thank you, thank you Time Machine!) to go back to my last backup with 10.9.3. I held my breath when it started and with Activity Monitor running all started fine... and stayed fine! And has for days now.
By the way, I have an identical iMac with same software that was not upgraded that has stayed fine as well with every other upgrade but 10.9.4.
I do not know why this problem happened but clearly 10.9.4 is either not properly tuned for my Mac or it is creating a not so obvious conflict that is beyond my ability to manage. I could spend days trying to figure this out - or - just leave well enough alone and hope that Apple fixes the issue or let's us know what is going on that we should fix.
For now, it's goodbye 10.9.4 and will be looking forward to but apprehensively at 10.9.5Sorry, I had it ready didn't post. Even have the log file as it was happening. I took a video of Activity Monitor during it too.

Intel Imac Tiger 10.4 boot issue/USB Boot
Intel 20 inch Imac had been CLEAN install Tiger 10.4 from
Grey Original install disks. ALL hardware and O/S working perfectly fine.
Tried to upgrade to Leopard 10.5 but after startup the installer does a "data integrity check"
and reported a " dirty/defective " spot on the Leopard dvd disk and then it offered selection
to restore/reboot back to the original Tiger 10.4 O/S.
The Installer script/process failed and somehow screwed up the boot process.
The leopard disk would not eject. (I have since manually removed it and destroyed it as defective).
What I get now on boot up is the boot tone grey-white screen then the apple shows up then I get
a black screen with the following error message:
localhost:/ root# CSRHIDTransitionDriver::stop
IOBluetoothHCIControler::start Idle Timer Stopped
At this point I hit Enter key and get the following standard root prompt:
localhost:/ root#
I can traverse directories and list files ( cd dirname ),( ls -al) and the original clean Tiger 10.4 instalation
seems to be present and largly intact.
Many commandline commands work but many do not issuing an error like path/image not found.
" info diskutil " displays man page for diskutil. ctrl c exits the man page.
" diskutil list " returns the following:
dyld: Library not loaded: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/R/Frameworks/WebServ icesCore.framework/Versions/R/WebServicesCore
Referenced from: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices/.frameword/Versions/R//CoreServices
Reason: image not found
Trace/BPT trap
I have tried ALL the usual boot up keypresses that should invoke boot selection menus and other
such utilities but none of these work.
I need some kind of manual command/script/other process to repair the boot process or to FORCE
a boot to an external USB dvd drive from which I have the Tiger install disk so that
I may format the hard disk and redo a clean Tiger 10.4 install.
If there are any mac/BSD/Linux command line gurus in Long Island, NY area
I would be happy to demonstrate this most agrevating issue at the site.
Tnx for your help

Intel iMac Randomly restarts, and delayed boot-ups when powered on from off
First, bought the iPod (20gig w/ photo display). Love it. Still use it. Never a problem.
Then bought a MacBook in '06. Love it. Only a few problems along the way but easily fixed.
So, based on that, bought the 20" aluminum intel-iMac (2.4GHz, 2GB memory, 320HD)in October. Loved it. Never a problem. Not one. Until...
...I installed Leopard. What a headache. I've solved all of the problems with help from the forum etc. except one:
iMac waits 3-20 minutes before it feels like "waking up" after I've powered it on, and when it does finally boot-up into OS it restarts upon a whim, sometimes after half an hour or so and sometimes after just a few minutes. Problem.
After searching the discussions and reading through the posts I can't find a solution.
Any suggestions?
(There's nothing external connected to iMac except the keyboard. There are no 3rd party upgrades. All updates successfully downloaded. And I've unplugged the power cord several times. It is the only way to get the iMac to power on and, eventually, boot up again.)
Any help is much appreciated.
TulliverThanks for the reply, Dennis.
I was able to try the SMC instructions and use Disk Utility before posting my question. It didn't help.
Since posting my question I talked to the Apple guys where we purchased our iMac and after discussing the problems they're quite certain it is a hard drive problem. I take it in tomorrow.
The problem with my post is that I left out the most glaring symptom (good thing I am not a doctor).
My Mac's start-up disk is not named "Macintosh HD". It was. Now it is named ""?????????. So, even though both "Repair Disk" and "Apple Hardware Test" came up just fine, no problems, there is something wrong with my Startup Disk. I had hoped upgrading to Leopard using the "erase and install" method would fix the problem. It didn't. And I just now brought the iMac to its original "Tiger" state and the startup Disk is still called ""?????????. The Apple guys say HD problem. They'll figure it out for certain on Monday.
Thank goodness for back-up hard drives.
Thanks again Dennis for your input.

Intel iMac Power / Overheat issue?
Hi there,
I have an Intel iMac from 2006. About 2 years ago it started to just turn itself off randomly as if there was a power failure. When it does, the only way to power it back up is to switch it off at the plug, switch it back on and press the power button (strangely) twice. I have noticed it seems to be temperature related - when my iMac reaches around 78C (which I'm pretty sure it should be able to handle fine?) it tends to be in the danger zone and at any minute can switch itself off.
I've got around this by using smcFan Control - which thankfully displays the temperature in the menu bar meaning when I hit around 72C I can whack the fans up to full blast to keep the temperature down. Being a sound studio computer - the hum of the fans really isn't ideal, but it at least makes my computer usable. However, I'm currently in the middle of a big project on Logic and I've had to turn my room into a fridge (window open-more clothes on) to be able to work on it as all the processing involved heats it up to 75C+ in no time.
I was hoping someone could shed some light on this or at least tell me if I am right in thinking that 78C is nothing really and the iMac should deal with it easily.
I have seen tons of posts regarding the G5 iMac power problems and similar problems with the intel iMacs - I've done all the hardware resets (PRAM, SMC, PMU) as suggested in these forums but nothing has helped.
I have had the power supply changed in the past (before this problem arose) as one day it just went kaput. Don't know if that makes any difference but I'm pretty sure that the problem started a little while after the replacement was installed.
Thanks in advance!

Performance issue with brand new intel iMac extreme
I am at a loss to explain a problem I've been having and I thought I might put it out to you guys.
In September I purchased a macbook Pro (2.4 ghz, 4 GB RAM) to use in video editing with Final Cut Pro, and for the most part I've been thrilled. I use 1TB LaCie external drives connected via FW800, and perform Multiclip editing with 4-5 video streams at a time and only on occasion have dropped frames during the editing process.
In December I determined that I needed to have an additional system, and thought a 2.8Ghz Intel iMac extreme would be an excellent choice, since for the same price I could get a little more power in the processor, more hard drive space and a bigger screen to work on. When we picked up the new system in the store (The Grove Apple Store in LA), we had them upgrade the memory to 4GB.
Since day one we have had performance issues, including problems playing streaming and DVD video, severe delays mounting and unmounting drives (firewire and USB) and application images, and freezing while doing even simple tasks like printing or checking email. These problems occur even while there are no external drives are connected. I have none of these issues with the Macbook Pro, which has virtually an identical set of programs installed, and both running the same version of Leopard.
I already took the original iMac back to the store, and they exchanged it, but did not have 4GB sets of RAM in stock so they took the RAM from the original machine and put it in the new one. They said if I continued to have problems then it was most likely the RAM and I should come back when they got more in stock. I DID have the same problems with the new machine, and took it back to the Apple Store and they swapped the memory. It seemed to improve the issue, but now I'm seeing the same severe performance issues again.
All tech support can do is tell me to do a PRAM reset, which seems to improve things very temporarily (but that may be my imagination) or have me restart, which at least has the ability to make the printing of documents capable.
What I'm wondering is if it is likely that the RAM is the issue and I just got another bad batch, or if the iMac has some weird glitch that isn't present in the macbook Pro...?? Or could I have possibly gotten 2 bad systems in a row? It's extremely frustrating, and I KNOW it shouldn't be this way! It's so bad I get better performance out of my single-core G5 tower! How do I get a good working system that operates like it should? Am I better off getting another Macbook Pro? I'd rather not for several reasons...
I have xbench on both the MBP and the iMac and can provide test numbers if they'll help, as well as any other info.
Thank you so much for reading my novella of a post and also for any insight you have!
Best,
TravisHi!
I got the same problem with my MacBook when it still was new in may 2006. It was supposed to be one of the faster Laptops around but it was soooo slow it drove me nuts. I can only advise to have a look if there is something hugging up your RAM and run some tests using these programs on your machine:
Xbench:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10081
MenuMeters:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10451
If they show any unusual results you might have your problem...
As to my problem with the MacBook: I did a complete re-install (writing the harddisk over with zeroes) and suddenly everything was just fine. (But be sure to back all your files before that, I learned this one the hard way.) I know it is just a standard answer, but it worked out for me this time...
Hope this helps in some ways.
Cheers,

2007 Intel iMac with sleep/wake issues
Subject: 2007 Intel iMac, 2GHz, 4GB RAM, 10.5.6
I'm having difficulty troubleshooting this one and would greatly appreciate any advice/help. Basically this iMac will develop all kinds of problems over night. It will be put to sleep in the evening and in the morning it will be off or it won't wake from sleep. I don't think it's a power issue, as other computers aren't affected.
If you manually turn it off and then on again, it won't recognize the startup volume. Usually at this point nothing will work except Diskwarrior will find and repair some errors and it will work again for the rest of the day, but come morning, the problems return.
I've replaced the memory, changed all peripherals, completely rebuilt the OS (clean install), even replaced the battery backup unit. I've reset the PRAM and the SMC, ran surface scans on the hard drive, as well as all available tests in Tech Tool and Rember. Nothing found. SMART status is clear.
It seems to only happen over night. If I put it to sleep mid-day, it'll wake just fine, although perhaps there's a difference between that short sleep and its nightly slumber which is the key??
I don't think there's a software issue because the person who uses it basically only uses Mail, Safari, Firefox, and occasionally iWork apps. I'll put the latest crash report in a follow-up post, but I don't quite understand its contents and I'm hoping it will provide a clue which someone can help me with.
Thanks for reading this far - I look forward to any responses!
ReyHere's the latest crash report. It seems to have originated after sunday night's crash, which is why it shows 10.5.4, which was installed by combo update yesterday. Last night's crash doesn't seem to have a report...

64 bit and the iMac 24", 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory
Hello,
I am confused about the whole 32 bit 64 bit situation
I have installed Snow leopard on my new iMac 24", 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory.
Can this machine run 64bit? I thought it was a 32 bit machine.
Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Most Apple application run in 64 bit mode no matter what. Third party apps will if they are designed to. The unix kernel defaults to 32 bit mode for compatibility reasons. You can switch it to 64 if you like. I tried it and lost my Kensington mouse driver. Switching back to 32 brought it back. There is very little reason a normal user would need to run in 64 bit mode... but dangit I WANT to! Sadly my extra mouse buttons are more important...

Reformat usiing the original install disc then update to v10.6.8.

is my imac with processor 2.4 GHz Intel core 2 duo with memory 1gb 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM compatible with lion????, is my imac with processor 2.4 GHz Intel core 2 duo with memory 1gb 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM compatible with lion????
According to the Lion webpage, you would need to add more RAM to your computer and check to make sure you have about 7GB of free hard drive space.
The page can be found here if you need more info:

I have an iMac OS X ver 10.7.5. Processor speed is 3.06 GHz intel core i3, and the memory is 4 GB 1333 MHz RAM. My online banking app is being updated and requires OS ver 10.8 or newer. When I ask for available updates, the system says there are none available. How can I update my system to ver 10.8 or newer to accommodate the new banking app?
You can update directly to Yosemite (for free) through the App Store (this is 10.10). Make sure your existing applications will run on this OS.
If you wish to stay at 10.8, you can order this through the online Apple Store (it's $20), and they will email you a redemption code to be used on the App Store.

Intel iMac Noise Issues?
I am considering the new iMac Intel Core Duo. My brother has the original iMac G5 and has always complained about how loud it is with fan noise (and it is loud!). I was curious if the Intel iMac has removed this issue? I've seen them at the Apple Store here in San Francisco, but in the retail environment of that large space there is no way for me to know what it would sound like sitting in my home.
Thanks for the feedback ...From all reports it would seem that Apple has corrected whatever caused all the noise in the first gen and ALS model G5 iMacs.

I recently started experiencing memory issues with my iMac due to One Drive using up to 5GB of my iMac memory (total of 8GB). Every time I start up my iMac Activity Monitor shows One Drive uses around 4-5Gb of the internal memory for no reason. Previously Onde Drive seemed to work fine, it's only since about 2 weeks I notice this. It's really annoying as the iMac freezes up regulalrly and I need One Drive to synchronise my files across different devices.
Has anyone experienced this too and are there any known fixes?Yes this is happening to me too, since the last upgrade. Eventually MacOS starts insisting I "Force Quit" all my applications as I have run out of application memory.
OneDrive doesn't appear in that list because it's not an application... but Activity Monotor clearly shows it's the culprit, taking up 5GB+ of RAM.
I've raised the issue on Microsoft's forums:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/forum/sdperformance-sdother/onedrive -for-macos-memory-leak/fe04cf60-949f-47b6-b886-10539b5c5cc3?tm=1397636232934
