Intel Imac (2007) Wont turn on!

Hey guys, I've got a weird problem and I think I've tried all the troubleshooting solutions. My Imac won't turn on. It boots up and does the gong sound, then the screen goes black. I tried unplugging it, tried the command-option-p-r, tried removing and reinstalling the ram. It boots into windows with bootcamp no problem, but it won't go into Mac OS (Leapoard 10.5.5). Any suggestions? Please tell me I don't have to take it in or reinstall leopard!

Hi,
have you got this sorted yet? I have a very similar problem with my intel iMac. It won't go any further than the white Apple screen and then the progress wheel spins and spins. Tried every boot key combination I can find, won't recognise (or boot up from) startup disk, my other (G4 iMac) won't launch it/mount it via Firewire. Have now used DiskWarrior five times but it seems to indicate no major problems... but the thing won't boot! Please let me know if you get any answers. I will do likewise.

  • My Intel imac  won't turn on

Hi! My intel Imac suddenly, and without apparent reason, shut down, and won't turn back on. When I press the power button, sometimes it makes a small noise, but then nothing happens. I have unplugged all the cables, and also tried resetting the SMC, and still nothing. I see some of you have had a similar problem, I don't know if any of you found out the reason why this happens. The computer is almost brand new (I've had it for 3 months) and up until now I had had no problem with it.
    Thank you!
    Nadia

You've (unfortunately) joined the growing list of users that are having problems with their iMac. Mine was purchased in September 2007 and I went through two bad ones before I finally kept one until last week.
Last week: the iMac totally died. It's at the Apple store getting the logic board and PSU replaced. Look through this forum and you'll see a number of other users with random reboots and dead iMacs.

  • IMac G5 wont turn on, strange clicking sound

Brought my iMac home from work (where it was working fine). Plugged it in and it wont turn on. I hear a strange clicking like sound and then that stops. Help!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You should try booting from the OS X install disc. Then open Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu (don't run the installer). I fear something has gone awry with your hard drive.
Let us know how you get on.

  • My Imac G5 wont turn on

Hi i need help, my computer is not working, it wont turn on?

Welcome to Discussions - can you be a little more specific - do you hear nothing at all when you turn it on?
    In that case,
    1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    3. Wait 10 seconds.
    4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    5. Let go of the power button.
    6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Let us know if that works.

  • Intel iMac will not turn on. Won't boot up from install disc either.

The last couple of weeks I have been noticing lag, freeze and graphical issues with my Intel iMac -- ever since I installed a video game called Warcraft 3. My computer's specs are way beyond the recommended specs of the game (it was released in 2002) but even when playing the game I would have graphic and freeze issues. It would get to the point where I would have to power off my computer and power it back on to get out of the freeze.
Tonight when it froze my computer, my whole screen was given a "digital green" tint. I can't figure out any other way to describe it. I powered the computer off, turned it back on and the usual Apple that pops up when the computer starts up had the same "digital green" lines through it. After that it goes to a grey screen and sits there.
I put in the install discs that came with the computer and powered it back on -- same scenario would play out. It was like it wasn't reading the discs. I turned it off again and held down "Option" when powering it on and it asked me what I wanted to boot from: the hard drive or the install disc (the green tint was gone). I chose hard drive and my computer booted up like normal finally, but once the desktop screen finished loading, the whole screen turned green and froze again. I powered down, turned it on with "option" again and chose to boot from the install disc (now the hard drive and install disc labels had the green tint too). Nothing happened. The computer went right back to a grey screen and stayed there.
Any ideas what the problem could be and how I might fix this?

    Hello fallingisfunny
As described in the link below, run the Apple Hardware Test a and see if it detects a hardware issue! If a hardware problem is found then you will need to take the iMac in for service!
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Apple support will probably have you do an *Archive and Install* or *Erase and Install* from the OS X Install Disk. If you have everything backed-up, you might give that a run as per the article in the next link!

  • Bondi Blue iMac 266 wont turn on at all.

OK, WELLLLLLL, i know you guys probably see this kind of thing everyday. i looked around the forum through all those "imac wont start" pages and none help. mine seems to be a different problem. ill try to give as much info as possible.
ok, i push the main power button, it chimes, HD spins up, everything seems just fine then click click click, and the whole thing goes off (no it doesnt boot up and monitor is just off, the whole thing goes off). if i remember correctly, the power light never turned green, and if it did it was for a short time. after it does this, pressing the power button does NOTHING, no noise at all.
i have 2 other identical macs so ive done a little experimenting (the other two work flawlessly) first i tried just swapping the computer out (not the board, the whole slide out thing, cdrom, hd logic board and all) that didnt work. while i had it out, i tried the computer part from the problem mac, in the other case (the one i knew worked) it worked, but when i installed some updates and restarted, it wouldnt come back on. it did the same as the other the power button did nothing, no noise whatsoever.
so im confused as ever. seems like both parts are broken haha, the crt part AND the computer.
blah, im gonna fiddle around with it a little more see what i can do.
any ideas??? (ALSO, it says 10.2 but honestly i have no idea what os this imac has, but im pretty sure its 9.1)
    iMac G3 (CRT) 266 MHz / 512K Cache/32 MB/ 6GB HD/24x CD-ROM/ RAGE PRO / 6MB SGRAM/ modem   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   Bondi Blue/Green W/E it is haha

ok well just to clarify it a little bit, i just took the board out unhooked it all removed battery memory, etc (not cpu though), put it back in, plugged it back up, hit the power button. it chimes, hard drive spins up, the light is orange the whole time, then right as the light turns solid green i hear a click and the whole thing goes off and wont turn back on. also, i tested the battery and i think its dead. would a dead battery cause all of this????

  • Severe graphic problems on Intel iMac (2007)

iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (white, 2007)
Works OK in OS X 10.6.7 in Safe Boot mode, but with regular startup is unusable and experiences severe graphic problems and freezes, such as:
Spurious lines across the screen and in various application windows.
Mail window breaks up into a patchwork and mail refuses to quit
Safari window displays severe artifacts and locks up
Dock severely distorted; some icons extremely garbled and unrecognizable
We tried erasing and reinstalling OS 10.6, up to 10.6.7, restoring only the primary user, but the same problems persist. No applications other than from the installation disk were installed.
iMac originally came with OS X 10.4. Upgraded to 10.5, then later to 10.6. Since upgrading to 10.6 (now 10.6.7), have had increasing problems with display artifacts. Now it's so bad we can't operate unless we go to Save Boot. Then, it seems to work fine, but Safe Boot turns off sound output, so iTunes and other audio capabilities are lost.
Since it works OK under Safe Boot, what items could be removed to restore proper operation?
Is there a way to restore sound output while operating in Safe Boot?
Is it just a bad idea to upgrade to MacOS X 10.6 on a computer that came with 10.4?
I'm considering erasing and returning to the original MacOS X 10.4 installation, but I'm concerned that photos in iPhoto will not be compatible with the OS 10.4 version of iPhoto.
    Hope someone can help. Thanks.

    Thanks.
    Or buy a new one.
It passes the Apple Hardware Test, as well as TechTool Pro hardware tests. But clearly something is wrong, and worse than when it was even a few weeks ago. I even tried erasing and reverting Tiger, and it was better, but still had some obvious artifacts and stability issues. Apparently not a drive problem either, since it occurs when running from various external drives as well.
    Appreciate the help.

  • Intel iMac will not turn on

So here's the deal: The other day I noticed things were acting buggy on my Intel Core Duo iMac (the white, matte-screen one). Performing simple tasks like opening a folder or window caused the spinning beach ball for at least 30 seconds or more. Email wouldn't open without the spinning beach ball going on for at least a minute or two. Also, there is an intermittent click coming from inside the computer. Maybe every minute or two--click.
So I restart. Things seem fine. But then the hang ups start again. So I boot from my Snow Leopard disks and run Disk Utility. Verifying permissions takes a very long time but I finally get to repair permissions. Then I try to verify the disk and repair but I get an error message in red saying something like "this disk cannot be repaired". So I shut down and try to start up from Disk Warrior. Once the Disk Warrior window comes up the iMac shuts down. I try this a couple of times.
I check the forum and try the suggestions of holding down P and R (or something like that), unplugging and pressing the "on" button before plugging it back in. Nothing works. I get to the gray screen and it shuts itself off.
After that I try to start it up as usual and when the gray screen comes up I have an apple logo and beneath that a status bar and as soon as the status bar is complete the computer shuts off. I try this a couple of times. Finally it won't even start up at all. It's as if it's not even plugged in. No chime, no internal noise, no "on" indicator light, nothing.
If my hard drive has failed, does this mean my computer will not even turn on? If my hard drive has failed and I could turn my computer on, what would I typically see? A blank screen? A question mark?
    Any ideas or suggestions?

Update: So I took my iMac to the Apple store and they ordered a power supply and a new hard drive. The plan was to install the power supply and see if that's all it needed. If the hard drive was dead they would then install the drive. The wanted about $95 for the power supply, which isn't bad, and $248 for a 320 GB hard drive. Installation was going to be around $85. After I placed the order I went home and checked prices online and found I could get a 1TB hard drive for less than $120! And a 500 GB for around $60! Why would Apple charge me $248 for a 320 GB drive? During this time I also found a local Mac repair shop that was willing to install the power supply for me and, if needed, a new hard drive that I could purchase much less than Apple's price. So the parts came in and I went to the Apple store thinking I could purchase the power supply and walk out. No dice. Apple would not sell the power supply to me. They insisted they can only sell it to me if they swap it out for the one in my iMac. I told the guy, "that's okay, I only want to buy the power supply". He sort of apologized and said they can not do that. ***? Why wouldn't they sell something to a customer willing to buy it?
Long story short, all of my business is now going to the local Mac repair shop and not the Apple store. I'll never take anything that's not in warranty to the Apple store again. And I'm sure they couldn't care less.

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
You clearly have a hardware problem.
If you insert your Leoard DVD can you boot into it using the "C" key at boot?
If not, I suggest bringing your box to the nearest Apple service center.

  • Imac A1224 wont turn on!

I recently went to visit my Grandfather and he had a Imac A1224, which used to run fine, but since he doesn't really understand how to use it he stopped using it for a very long time, I was the only one using it, but only when I visited him so the computer started to get slower, and some lines appeared in the screen. Then after a while I came back, and the computer didn't turn on at all... (He lives in a very very humid area near the beach, I don't know if this is relevant).
Since I cant turn on the computer, I have no idea of what software its using, but here are the specs that I do know,

    Model No.: A1224

  • Oh S_it, my intel iMac 2008 wont boot, flashing question mark is all I get.

Bought a friends' intel duo iMac 2008 which was working just find until a couple of day's ago and now when I try to boot it up all I get is a flashing question mark. I unplugged all components, including the electric cord and that worked the first time but now nothing. I don't have the startup or recovery disks. Must I have these...what's a girl to do? HELP!!!
    Imac 2008 Mac OS X (10.5.4) previously owned, 2G

You don't need those discs, unless you need to test for Hardware, or reinstall the original operating system.
But you should get them anyway. Any software they installed on your machine, you should have the discs for as they are not their's to give away copies because of licensing restrictions.
The first step to try is zapping the PRAM:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Then attempting a data recovery if there is no backup*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html#RECOVER
If there is a backup, initially try to repair the directory*:

  • IMac g5 wont turn back on

Yesterday my iMac processor fan was spinning really loud so I shut down and I was going to give it a couple minutes to cool down. The fan stayed on for like a minute after it completely shutdown. When it was done, I tryed to turn it back on and nothing would happen.
It had stopped working before and I brought it into an Apple store. They replaced the motherboard and the power supply (so they told me) as it was eligible for repair under some recall thing. Shortly after I was upgrading the RAM and I noticed how poorly is was put back together. There was some missing screws and on the power supply there was three screws that was to hold it down but where just set in there and wherent tightened. It was clear it was poorly put back together and I wasnt that happy. I didnt make a fuss about it cause my mac was working again.
I put alot of money in to this mac and I dont need a new one. Its even running leopard! But it was just working fine less than a day ago and theres no reason I see that it shouldnt be working now. If this is because of what apple did to it when I brought it in for repairs then I want them to fix it back and do a proper job this time.
This mac needs to be fixed because its my main computer. It has all my music and pictures that I cant lose. Im a mac lover and after using this same computer both my sister and my brother bought macs. Im not going to go with anything else but this needs to be fixed.
If anybody knows what I should do or who I should call or someway to fix on my own without having to bring it back in to come back in even worse condition, any help will be appriciated. Thanks.

i forgot about this post. well my mac was fixed and im not happy about the service i received. i brought it into the apple store. they told me it was three year and a half years old so it wasnt covered under any warranty or repair program. they said they think its power supply and they would replace it and if it wasnt that they wouldnt charge for it. they called me a couple days later and said it was the logic board and it would cost $499. like 10/15 minutes after that they called again and said it was working and it was just the power supply. my brothers and my guess was they mixed up the original and new power supply and when they went to put the original power supply back in they put in the new one. ive yet to see good repair service from apple. maybe its just at this apple store. i dont plan to go back to that apple store. if i do go to another and get crappy service again i might not be buying from apple again.

  • Mac Pro (2007) wont turn on

I bought a Mac Pro last May, and today our mains fuse went, and it will no longer turn on. There is no smell of burning, and it is pretty dust free. I changed the fuse in the plug to no avail.
Is there anything I can do? I don't have applecare.
What support can I get? It's under 12months old, so under limited warranty. I am no where near an apple store though, so can't just walk in.

You should have been running your system on a UPS for one.
When you need to reset the system, there is an SMC RESET button under drive #4 or zap pram/nvram or unplug from the wall for 30 seconds.
A Mac Pro should be on its own circuit with only little other equipment (no space heaters, window A/C, refrig etc).
