Intel iMac 24 display problem with colours

Hi,
Tonight for no apparent reason my imac screen has gone weird. The colours are reversed with black becoming white and vice versa.
Restart - no change
Display resolution - changed but made no effect
Ran CD hardware diagnostic to no avail
Weird thing - when I boot up in Windows its fine.
When I log in with another account name its fine
Please help

Beatsuite.com:
Check Universal Access in System Preferences and see if white on black is checked instead of black on white under Display. If not that then I don't know.

  • Intel Imac display problems

I have an old intel imac (17 inch white screen) bought just over 5 years ago.  The imac has just 'died', the screen will not display anything.  It will chime on starting up and I can hear activity but nothing displays on the screen.
I returned it to my local Apple store, upon investigation they said the graphics card had gone (£500 to replace) so I bought a brand new iMac a few days ago.
All of my data is backed to up an external hard drive.
I run a database programme on the old iMac called 4D, which has a huge amount of data stored in it (all backed up).
I have installed the most current version of 4D on my new Imac, but it will not open the data on my back-up (error message: data cannot be published).
I have installed my old original version of 4D from my original bought CDs, but again it will not read the data.
The guy in the Apple shop gave me instructions on how to link my old 'dead' iMac, to my MacBook Pro via a Firewire cable, and using Target Disc Mode, I should be able to access the dead iMac hard drive on my MacBook ... have just tried this and the dead iMac hard drive will not show up on my MacBook.  It does not appear on the desktop as suggested by the guy in the Apple shop, nor does it show up in System Preferences > Start Up Disk as an alternative disc to boot from.
What I need to do is access the 4D database on the dead imac, so that I can export the data as a text file, to put into a new application on my new iMac.
Althought the data is backed up to the external hard drive, it is backed up 'in the database' ...  and I need to EXPORT the data, which I cannot do unless I can open the database ... which I can't !
I'm going round in circles with this, so if anyone can please point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Rock of Ages.

make sure you execute the instructions for target disk mode properly, because your screen is dead and you won't see the icon displayed.
    see here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8443.html
you may have to hold the T longer on the deadhead mac.

  • IMac display problems with gray to white gradients

My early 2006 iMac 20 has problems displaying gradients going from pure white to light gray. The web colors are #000000 to #EEEEEE (RGB 238 238 238 and 255 255 255)
My cheaper Acer and Fijutsu Siemens displays can handle this very well, but my iMac cuts the gradient prematurely and makes the gray darker. It looks as if the gradient on my iMac is a dark gray bar and a white bar, instead of a smooth gradient compared on the two other monitors.
I know the iMac doesn't have the best display for a designers need, but it can't be that 'cheap' or can it? I have tried to calibrate the display with both manual expert mode and using ColorSpyder. The latter gave me a blue/magenta colormode with beige gamma each time, so I gave that up.
The frustration is that I have use my iMac as secondary display and one of the other primary. It is not the optimal arrangement for an office environment.
Does anyone have the same problem or do they have any good advice for me as of what to do?

Thanks for all the speedy replies.
    Barbara:
This was reassuring news, I have been using Spyder2express with both the bundled calibration software and another professional (and high revered) software, which name is completely lost to me right now.
In both cases, with blinds shut, lights turned off and no other interference, I got a beige/dark result from both. With a bit of flicking with the settings, I managed to produce only a sick magenta result.
Your post reassures me that it can be done, so I am going to borrow the Spyder2 again and try all over, even read myself to death on the instructions once more.

  • Display problems with Kwin on intel hardware

    Hi all,
Since the latest update of xorg and intel drivers, I have a display problem with kwin's expose-like feature. Before I file a bug,
    - Is anyone experiencing the same problem? Do you have a workaround?
    - Does anyone know what could be at fault?

BTW, could you also try Ctrl+F11 and rotate the cube for a while? You should notice some flashes and very bad performance, even with direct rendering.
I will, and I hope you'll contribute your logs to the bug report! The question is where to submit it: I'm pretty sure the bug is upstream, but is it a kwin bug or an xorg/intel bug?
Ctrl+F11 works "fine" on my system, even though it crashed kwin the first time I tried it :-)
Well, that's a very tough question! I was thinking to fill a bug report in Arch's bugtracker, although I also think it is an upstream bug. Problem is, after reading this http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2 … paces-4-5/ and this http://www.itnewstoday.com/?p=1803, one can realize the absolute *Mes(s)a * that dominates the whole graphics stack....

  • Intel imac display glitch and involuntary restart

Just want to know if anyone else has experienced this specific problem, there are plenty of complaints about intel imac displays but I can't be bothered to sift through them all trying to find a match for my problem.
A couple of months ago I was watching a video in quicktime and noticed that my screen was glitching and flashing fragmented diagonal lines - like a commodore 64 loading type thing. Then the spinning-ball came up and a force quit didn't do anything so I had to force shut down. I started up and it occured again. Then the screen went blank/black, but still lit up, and restarted without me doing anything. It also got stuck during start up the second time this occured. I panicked and ran out to buy a 500GB external drive, backed up all of my work and then re-installed mac osx from disk, archive and install job. This seemed to sort it and for the following two months it seemed OK. No sign of any problems.
Since then I have updated from 10.4.7 to 10.4.10 (which I have suspicion that it screwed the firmware in my motu 828 firewire audio interface, costing me a £130 repair - but that's another painful story).
It happened again tonight (the screen thing, not the motu). And the ball came up and I couldn't do anything. Force shut down, restart - screen glitching again. Then I had 2 unexpected restarts, one getting stuck in startup. Then a successful startup but accompanied by the glitchy graphics, mainly red/pink pixellated diagonal lines flickering in and out. I ran a disk first aid - no problems. Did a disk permission repair. Shut down and ran a hardware test, the first few minutes of the test the screen was still at it but then stopped glitching, hardware test found no errors (it was an extended test too). Now I'm back on it and it's all OK.
    Any suggestions/similar stories?
When it occured 2 months ago I had the original ram that came with the imac. Now I have 2x1GB sticks of crucial ram.

That's it! Well, that's what I have. Unfortunately, I don't know about the cause, but I don't ever recall having it prior to an update going back about a year ago. I recall an update, and that update being immediately followed by some sort of Apple Graphics something-or-other. I feel pretty certain that's when I first noticed this. I just had my LCD replaced for another reason, but I think you'll agree, it's not an LCD issue. In my case, browser activity, scrolling up or down in a page, seems to be the most common trigger. I've also seen "pieces" of the torn page, on the screen when minimizing the browser to the dock (usually Firefox, but I think I've seen it with Opera and Safari too). Is there a way to find update packages installed somewhere? I'd know it if I saw it, and I'd definitely try removing that suspect package/update.

  • Imac display problem, the resolution seems to be unusual, top bar and all folders on the desktop background is off the screen

Need help with 21" imac display problem. The resolution seems to be unsual, everything on the desktop background goes off the screen. The resolution is set at 1920 x 1080

Quit the game and restart the iPad.
To quit the game - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesn't work try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • New intel iMac 20" problems...please advise.

I just purchased my first Mac last week. It is a 20" Intel iMac Core Duo with 2 gigs of RAM (apple RAM installed on site). After a day of use I began to have random kernel panics. Later, my system would shut down after two hours of use. I reset the SMC and that did the trick for 3 days. Now the top of the unit near the camera is getting hot and when I boot up from a shut down, the system does not boot to the desktop... it boots right into sleep mode, then takes about 15 to 20 minutes to wake from sleep mode where it goes into a couple of restatrs. Over the phone assistance has not been able to diagnose the problem and hardware tests all indicate that there are no problems. Furthermore, my work hours make it realy difficult for me to schedule time with a genius. I switched from a pc to a mac because I was tired of the problems with my pcs, but I am having far more trouble with my mac.

I will call apple when I get home. I have apple care for three years. The tech support has been good, but they are worried about the heat eminating from the area by the camera. Sadly, all the techs at my local apple store tell me that they are unfamiliar with the new intel iMac core duo and don't know what else to do. To top it all off, there was a popping sound from my mac and the the sound went out. I toggled the volume on the keyboard and the sound came back. I was told over the phone that I have to make an appointment with a genius to look at my system, but that they would only replace it if necessary. Sadly, my work schedule does not permit this. I wish I could just walk in and get the blasted thing replaced.

  • Display Problem with my Mac Pro and LG Flatron Wide Monitor in Mountain Lion

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my Mac Pro has display problems with my LG Flatron display.  The image is displayed with a black bar on the right and on the bottom.  And the left side of the content is not visible.  I tried every resolution available in the Display System Preferences, they are different in terms of how big the black bars are, and what part is not visible, but none of them are correct.  I held down the option key to try to detect displays or switch to resolutions that are not normally available.  When I restart the image is lined up with the display, but if the display ever goes to sleep or gets turned off, the image reverts to being off center, and the only way I can get it back is to restart...  The interesting thing is that this monitor works fine with the same machine if I reboot using BootCamp into Windows 7.  The Monitor also works fine, connecting the same connector to a Mac Mini, although that mac mini is running 10.6 and not Mountain Lion.  I've reset the SMC and restarted countless times, I don't see any other levers to pull or things to try...

That card is for a PC it may not give you Startup and Option-Boot screens.
The 7950 "Mac Edition" card has a very distinctive look:

Seeing as how there are so many thread with people posting issues with their 20" and 24" iMac displays, I was just wondering if there is anyone who DOESN'T have an issue with theirs?

  • MacBook Pro display....problem with coloured pixels appearing

I wonder if anyone can help - I have recently noticed on the left hand side of my display on my MacBook Pro that there is a large number of coloured pixels appearing more and more by the day. I have had the MacBook since Christmas, and it has been treated very well, i have never dropped it or damaged it in any way etc. At the moment the pixels aren't causing too much of a problem but i don't want it to get any worse. Has anyone had similar problems, and if so any suggestions?
    Many thanks in advance

I haven't had any luck what so ever - only thing left for me to try is to completely wipe the system and re-install everything from scratch, if that doesn't work then i think i'll be contacting Apple..... which i should have done already to be honest, would have saved a lot of time and hassle! Only difference between mine and what your describing on your Mac is that the pixels are visible at all times on mine, no matter what apps i'm running etc, it is definately a problem with the screen.....i'll keep you updated with any developments

  • Display problems with iMacs

I have read several posts on problems with some displays  on the iMacs, some with white screens etc. I found a firmware update
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3207. found it by reading some posts at Mac Rumors. I hope this may help with some of the problems.

There's a long thread covering the yellow tinge problem. Worth looking here:

  • Weird display problem with iMac 24"

Hi guys, I have a very weird problem with my 24" iMac. For some reason it seems that after approx. 10 minutes using the Mac, whenever I keep a window on top of another window and then I minimize it, it keeps there like a ghost for another 5-10 seconds until it fades away slowly slowly.
Sometimes it's hard to see it however it's very evident when using a white window (such as Safari) on a dark background (not black).
I'm attaching an image split into 2 parts, the 2nd part is shot exactly after I minimised the browser. It clearly shows a faded ghost image on the grey Photoshop canvas.
    Here's the pic:
    http://www.neilazzopardi.com/imac.jpg
Has anyone ever experienced a problem similar to mine? or am I getting paranoid?
By the way, I bought this Mac, 5 months ago and I don't know whether this problem has been there from the beginning but I only noticed recently while cropping in Photoshop and still seeing the parts I removed away very faded.

den.thed it's not that I took it the wrong way or anything but shouldn't I be doing whatever I like with my iMac?
For the record that is a dark grey Photoshop canvas, which just happens to show the problem much more evidently.
The problem is that it happens on any background (even desktop) with any window, even Adium etc. Their ghost just stays there for a while... I use the iMac for design purposes and it's very annoying especially when cropping a picture and what I just cut out stays there very faded...

  • Older intel mac display problems (x1600)

My mom has an intel imac (the version before the black/aluminum kind) and it had very minor display issues with Tiger (very infrequent horizontal lines). They were all resolved with further point releases of Tiger.
After upgrading to Leopard she has had numerous problems, all revolving around frequent and numerous horizontal lines. They sometimes get so bad that the current window is almost completely obscured.
Here is a flickr set of images that show the problem and the display specs. I know that was happening to users with newer imacs and x1900s, is this happening to other x1600 users?
Any ideas on what is going on? I told her to call apple, but her warranty has run out and she feels uncomfortable calling because she is not a technical person (exactly why I told her to get a mac—I have egg on my face now). Should she downgrade? Can this be a hardware problem?

Hi everyone, i have bought an iMac 20 with a core 2 duo 1 GB ram and an ATI x1600 (a white one, because the screen quality is better than the new iMac 20 alu)
and i've some display problems. First i was on Tiger and i didn't noticed any problems but as leopard came out i rapidly upgraded to it and then came problems with the display.
To make short, the lower part of my screen is lagging anormaly. When i drag a window or even the dock's animations are slower. And it doesn't occur on the upper part of my screen, windows can be dragged smoothly, there is no lag even if the CPU is working at 100% (like on every normal mac...).
I've noticed there is a little bump when i'm dragging a windows from the top to the bottom of the screen, it's like the window enter another area.
I've of course checked a lot of boards on the www, so i've tried a lot of things, my card ATI X1600 128mo PCIe is fully working with core image and quartz extreme.
Some people said to wait that spotlight finished to index, but it's done and the problems are still there.
    Time machine is off
I don't use coverflow and i've tried it, it doesn't change anything.
I've also re-installed Tiger and, wo-ow the problem is still there, especially when all is up to date.
It seems that, the problem come from the last firmware update, i don't know if this firmware update was done for improving compatibility with bootcamp or leopard but for me it has added this strange display behavior.
I've also tried to turn off quartz extreme, and it's even worst, worst on the lower part again but no changes on the upper, everything run smoothly.
As i didn't noticed it when i used my mac for the first days (on Tiger and without the firmware update) and on windows with bootcamp there is still no display problems at all, i keep thinking it's not an hardware problem but a software (firmware, display on Mac osX) problem.
It should be solved by a new firmware or Mac os upgrade until then i have to do with it.
By the way, does anyone knows if there's a way for downgrading the gpu firmware ? (when i try, it say that i didn't need it), it's the only thing that i havent tried.
Thanks in advance, and i beg your pardon for my pittyfull frenglish :s
