Intel iMac and 3rd Gen ipod

This problem involves iPods, but I believe has more to do with the iMac/OS X.
I installed the security update that was released in early March, and since then, neither of the two 3rd generation ipods in my house will work with my iMac. However, they WILL work with my girlfriends iBook, and she did NOT install that security update from early March.
Essentially, when I doc either of the iPods on my iMac, they freeze up, whir like crazy, and I can't even force quit. I have to just pull them off the dock and reset them by holding down play and menu. The ipods still work, and will still interact with the iBook, so I do not believe this to be a problem with the iPods themselves.
I've brought this matter up in the iPod forums, and have gotten no real resolution. People suggest the 5 Rs, but that DOES NOT fix the problem.
Any insight? Anyone?

I'm not sure why you are having problems, but my 3g iPod works great. No issues. I have all updates offered by Apple installed.
Have you tried a different firewire port & plugged directly into the Mac?
I have read on these groups of some folks having problems with firewire ports.
Also, plug it in & then run the Console (...Applications/Utilities), see what the log is saying.
Good luck,
Steve

  • RDS data display and 3rd gen iPod nano

Will RDS data be displayed for compatibile stations when using the Radio remote with 3rd gen iPod nano?

Since the iPod radio remote isn't compatible with the 3rd gen nano, the answer is probably no.
I've found that the radio/remote often does work with iPods that are not listed as compatible, but that some of the features (such as RDS) do not or at least if they do work, they're pretty hit and miss.

  • Dual Universal Bluetooth GPS Receiver and 3rd Gen iPod Touch

Has anyone used the Dual  Universal Bluetooth GPS Receiver with a 3rd Generation iPod Touch?  I understand that the Bluetooth connection only works for the headphones so I was wondering how this unit uses the Bluetooth connection.  Does it work?

I was looking for a way to get around that, as it sounds plausible. But i have had iTunes on a previous machine here at the office and it worked fine. Right now, the only option i have in iTunes with it connected is to "eject" the ipod. Not neccesarrily an error # message, but one does come up that says "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your network connection is active and try again"
as for restoring at home, it just goes through the motion on the progress bar, but when it reaches around 100% it says "failed to restore. ___" i cant remember the rest as i was up til 2am, and back awake at 6am trying to figure this out...
Last night, there was no battery icon, and the screen stayed illuminated in recovery mode...i updated iTunes, and restarted my laptop at home, and now this morning the screen times out and dims, and there is all of a sudden a battery charging icon in the upper right corner. It would not "power down" at all last night...there was no "power off" slide option after holding the button(s)....this morning it will power off.
It also wouldnt connect to my car radio this morning like it would last night when i came home. The radio doesnt even recognize it anymore.
here is a quick screenshot of what i see...nothing...with it plugged up...

    Thanks!

I don't know which iPod that is exactly. If it connects via Firewire it will charge from the iBook.

  • Firewire and 3rd Gen Ipod

I have an Emac with USB 1.0 only. When I connect my Ipod 3gen to it using the firewire, it does not recognize it i either Itunes or finder. I believe Firewire is faster than USB 1.0 but can I use it and if so how?

  • Nike + and 3rd gen ipod?

Hey. I was wondering if the Nike+ products are compatible with the small Gen. 3 ipod. I think the software is version 1.2.1 or something like that. I also recently got a mac and my ipod is formatted for windows so I think that means I can't update the software on the ipod?

I was wondering if the Nike+ products are compatible with the small Gen. 3 ipod.
If it's an iPod touch or iPod nano, yes. Otherwise, no.

Not without restoring the iPod, which erases its contents.

  • Trying to lear of way to verify 1s and 0s written to newly formatted drive in iMac and 3rd gen Time Capsule

after choosing format, initially, for Time Capsule, further chose to write 1s and 0s and I don't see either progress bar or any other indication process completed. Will lights blink differently? Is there other way to verify process completed?  Apple offers us the option to write zeros but without way of confirming they were written. I find this puzzling, at least.

after clicking on object representing TimeCapsule, a dialog box appears with menu tabs across top, last one being "Disks" and clicking that one shows device HD capacity, below which are buttons to Erase Disk... or Archive Disk...  Choosing Erase Disk... brings up verification dialog with drop down "Security Method" whose initial option is "Quick Erase (non-secure) then there is "zero out data" "7 pass erase" or "35 pass erase"
huge problem here is there is no apparent progress bar so it appears to be impossible to verify what if anything has been done, which makes each of the menu options other than "non-secure" as essentially meaningless

I've been trying to download Trenches II onto my 3rd gen ipod touch, but when I do it says that it's incompatable, the only problem is that I fufill all requirements (iOS 3.1 and 3rd gen ipod minimum)

Please check the model number on the back. If it is A1288, it is a 2nd gen unit.

  • Connection problems using Macbook pro and 3rd gen firewire ipod

    Hello,
I have been trying to get my girlfriends old 3rd gen ipod to synch on our mac but when connected, the ipod charges but is not recognised at all by the mac. nothing shows up in itunes, or the desktop but the ipod is definitely charging and connected fine. I was told by someone that the newer versions of itunes are not back compatible with these older ipods so ive wiped itunes, reinstalled the earliest mac version i can find (7.4) with no success. I cant find any mac versions older than this although windows versions are readily available.
anyone had a similar problem and know how to remedy this incredibly annoying problem?
thank you very much for your time.

  • Transferred itunes library from Windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. plugged in 3rd gen Ipod. Ipod icon appears along with playlists, music etc. Songs are grayed out and won't play. Please help!

I recently transferred itunes library from windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. The transfer was successful, however when I plug my 3rd gen Ipod Nano into the new PC, the Ipod icon appears along with the music, playlists, etc. The songs are shown but are 'grayed out' and wont play or sync. The 'Devices & Printers' window in new PC shows icon for Ipod driver & is OK. The icon for the Ipod appears but depicts a delta shaped warning icon that states that the Ipod is'not operating properly'. Tried troubleshooting. The troubleshooting message states the the Ipod is 'disconnecting'. Can you help me with this problem?

Then, I dropped the entire itunes file from the old PC (XP) into an empty external drive.
That "itunes file from the old PC"?  Is that the iTunes folder, from the old PC, that was in the user home folder's Music folder?
All of the library, playlists, etc. from the ipod as they always have been are shown, by they are 'grayed out' and will not open or play.
That's on the iPod, correct?  Are all of your old playlists in iTunes, from the old PC, still there in iTunes on the new PC?  Are the songs in iTunes still playable?
This document provides the steps to transfer a complete iTunes library between two computers.  See the section called External drive.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - Apple Support
There are many steps, but this is a summary.  (1) On the old PC, consolidate all of your iTunes data into the iTunes folder.  (2) Copy this iTunes folder to the external drive.  (3) On the new PC (that has iTunes installed but NOT running), replace its existing iTunes folder with the one from the old PC (on the external drive).  When you run iTunes, it uses the iTunes folder from the old PC, and it should look like iTunes on the old PC (with all the playlists, ratings, play count, etc.), and your iPod will see the iTunes library as the same iTunes library (because it is the same library).
If you did something different, and the old PC is still accessible, you may want to try it using the method from the linked document.

    Hi ChristianHelpplz,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It seems like your iPod touch is not recognized by iTunes on your Mac, but your iPhone 6 is working normally.
I recommend starting with these steps to troubleshoot your iPod touch and connection with your Mac:
    Check your USB connections
Unplug other USB devices from your Mac and try again.
    Try a different USB port.
    Try a different USB cable.
    Restart your device
Restart your iOS device or reset your iPod.
    Restart your Mac
Turn your Mac off and back on.
    Update your software
Check for software updates on your Mac.
    Check for an iTunes update.
    Check your security software
If you have security software installed, learn how to resolve issues between iTunes and your security software.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
