Intel iMac Bootcamp question

Hi - I just installed Windows Vista Home premium on my new 24" Aluminum imac w/4 GB ram using the latest version of Boot Camp. It seems to work fine except for one odd issue - the mouse doesn't seem to work! I have the wireless mighty mouse - anyone else come across this problem? Apologies if this isn't the best place for this question - I didn't see a Boot Camp forum.
Thanks,
Steve

  • 2 HDD iMac & Bootcamp question

    Hello,
If I have an iMac with 2HDD's, either 2 internal or 1 internal and 1 external, is it possible to setup boot camp with Windows booting off the secondary hdd and not the hdd with my OSX partition?  If so, how?  Looking at the support guide for boot camp it mentions to do that I would need to remove the drives of the lowered number bays but I'm not intending this setup for a Mac Pro.
    Many Thanks!

  • Migrating from 1.25Ghz G4 to Intel iMac problem

    Hi there!
    Question in brief:
Can I install old (non-universal) software (such as IDCS2 and Qk6.5) on a new Intel iMac?
    Question at length:
Just got a new iMac here, and wanteed to do a migration (which I've done problem-free between PCC Macs) and have hit upon a problem. The new iMac will not see the old Mac (connections/cables/old mac have been tested). New man just says "Waiting for your old mac to restart"
I came here looking for an answer, and fount this post
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4753948&#4753948
So it looks like it's going to be a LONG job. Can I just reinstall non-universal 3rd party apps from original CDs? We have NO universal software at all.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Kappy
Thanks for your reply. Sorry for not being clear enough – ou see I'm not exactly sure of what migration assistant is capable of.
I know that when you connect the two macs MA Upon start up (Migration Assistant) can copy the user settings. I presumed it could do this because it was copying over the newer mac's user settings at a point where the newer mac a total access to the drive. I therefore presumed that if (instead) the iMac had been started up, and then I ran MA, it would not be able to replace the user data, because it is in use.
That link I put in the original post said that I shouldn't do applications via MA from a PPC to an Intel one. So I'll have to reinstall those from the original disks. That's O.K., right?
    Thanks again ;0)

Tired 5 keyboards on all Usb ports and a hub and keyboard wont boot to startup or safemode of anything but hub gets power. disc drive wont eject or accept a disc cuz keyboard commands not being sent to computer. Keyboards must be connected directly to the USB port, not through a hub.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Question about Intel iMac's and Airport

I'm going to be purchasing an Intel iMac within the next few months and I just want to make sure I have my facts straight about the Airport issues. Is it true that the Airport issues only occur if you're using an Airport base station (do they not occur if you use a third-party base station?). And do you think the issues would affect the speed of my 512k Internet connection? If anyone could post their own experiences, that would be great.

    Hello,
I have been a P.C. user form the beginning of time the VIC 20 to "08088 processor", Windows 1.0 to XP-sp2 and I have made a big change in our life and my family but we are not disappointed but surprised. Make the big step Apple is on the right track and going to be the top. As for your question don't worry.
    My opinion
About your issues, if your are on DSL there are many issues. IMac is not the your problem it would be your provider. For airport no problem, third-party I would choose linksys. My choice for connection is Cable high speed..

  • Migrating FCE 2 on G4 powerbook to FCE 4 on Intel iMac/Mac Pro: Questions

I am interested in migrating from FCE 2 on G4 powerbook (1.6ghz) to FCE 4 on Intel iMac/Mac Pro (have to decide which). I have two main questions:
Will my FCE2 projects, sequences, scratch files etc. (currently on external hard drive) open ok on the Intel based FCE4 system?
How much of a performance boost can I reasonably expect after this migration (for example renderings)?
    Thank you in advance.

Thank you both for replying. Just in case anyone else is wondering about the second part of my question (speed of FCE on 1.6GHz Powerbook G4 vs an Intel iMac), I tested this out this weekend at the local Apple store. I took a 12 second clip on different computers and timed how long it took to render a contrast/brightness change. Here are the results:
    7 sec. iMac
    6 sec. Mac Pro
    9 sec. Macbook Pro
30 sec. My old G4 Powerbook
So a 4-5 x bump! Impressive! Although its interesting that the mac pro isn't radically better than the imac.

  • A few Questions about the intel iMac

    Hello,
I have just ordered the 1.83ghz 17" intel imac.
I have bought the imac to replace my PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8 as its getting tired and falling apart now (nearly 3 years old) no apple care on it
I Have upgraded it with 2gb Ram.
My question is, i use the desktop mac i have for music using Logic Pro 7 and GarageBand, i have found GarageBand to be slow on my PowerMac G5 would the intel IMac be man/women (not trying to be sexest) for the job?
ie would it be the same power / more powerful than my G5?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Stuart
Ps Sorry if this has been asked about 1000 times, i did do a search and couldn't find the answers i was looking for, but if there is a thread about it please could you be kind enough to reply with the link.

Out of my personal experience, In School I use the Dual 2.0 GHZ G5 with 1GB of ram and I am using at home the 17inch 1.83 Intel iMac with 1GB or ram as well and seeing a big render difference with the iMac compared to the Dual G5. The only thing that ***** but will be solved soon is using non-universal software yet. Rosetta works and you get the job done but you dont see a speed difference using the power PC apps. Anything Universal is really really fast and I am satisfied with the increase of performance.

  • EFI password SET + bootcamp removed: my intel iMAC wont boot...

With my new (and first) iMAC (i think) I have done the two thinghs that made the sistem crash...
    Here's the detail:
    1. I've installed boot camp and try to install windows. But the I say "iMAC is for MAC OSX, and not for windows".
So, I reload boot camp and removed the partition of windows (the OSX partition regain it's original size)
    2. Meanwhile, I've launched Open firmware password (function of a power PC iMAC, founded in an intel iMAC!) and I set a password! I remeber this password (useful if someone can help me)
So, when I reboot, a flashing question mark inside a folder appear for my happyness! :< (the HD index is probably gone...)
With the EFI (the name of the open firmare interface on Intel iMAC) password active, I cannot boot from CD or DVD!!
So i cannot use the original DVD 1 to help me...
Reading the internet seems that apple doesn't provide any procedure to unlock this situation...
PLEASE!! What I have to do?
    Thank
    Mauro

    Solved!!!!
I remove 1 bank of memory, and the PC boot in Mac os X
So I removed the password from efi.

  • My Intel iMac only shows a blinking folder with a question mark when powering it up. What can I do besides running the hardware test of the original installer disc.

My Intel iMac only shows a blinking folder with a question mark when powered up.
I did run the hardware test of the original installer disc and no trouble was found and I am out of options. Does anybody have any advice what to do next

If the drive shows errors then repair, if after the 3rd pass of Repair Disk in Disk Utility it still shows errors it's telling you it's time to be replaced. Take it to your local Apple Store or AASP for repair, when it comes back use your backup (either Time Machine or bootable clone) to restore so you can pick up where you left off.

  • Question regarding DVD/CD Drive on intel imac...

My intel imac dvd drive is playing up. Its spinning longer than it should, making noises it shouldnt be and generally rejecting perfectly good DVD/CDs.
My warrenty ran out and now I need a replacement. I called up Amsys; a company here in the Uk which deal with apple repairs and I was astounded at the quote I was given. £70 labour and £180 for the drive..£250 just for a DVD drive!?! I couldnt believe it.
So, Im asking you the forum, what can I do? Yes I could get an external I suppose but is there another option? Could I get the right DVD drive from anywhere else and install it myself? Is that difficult?
    Any help would be apprecated.
    Cheers

"Playing Up???" You mean "Acting Up???" Gosh, I wish you Brits would speak ENGLISH!!!
Since your warranty is up, a new DVD drive wouldn't be that hard to replace, if you're competent with electronics. There are many websites with step-by-step instructions. (ifixit.com for one.) Go for it! Go with a better quality one that comes with the iMac. My new Aluminum iMac's DVD drive sounds and rejects perfectly good DVDs as your does. Cheapos???
    Cheers!

  • Just got a 20-inch Intel iMac

    Hi,
I just got a 20-inch Intel iMac and have couple of questions before I even open the box. I'm a PC to Mac changeover guy and I'm pretty new to to the Macintosh platform. I would appreciate your inputs to keep my system flying.
To begin with, I know that I have to upgrade my RAM to either 1.5GB or 2GB and also know Crucial is the way to go.
Apart from that, I have these questions:
    1. What do I first check for after opening the box? (Dead pixels for example and etc..etc..etc..) and how do I do that?
    2. Absolutely reqd tools and utilities to keep the system running at peak.
    3. Absolutely reqd apps.
    4. BootCamp (ofcourse) and is there a Mac OS X video conf. software that can use iSight and also can talk to PC users with any camera? Also, with BootCamp can I have multiple Windows partitions (for example having a partition for scratch disk when doing video editing)?
5.How do I make Apple DVD Player to read a DVD image (ISOs) that are lying on the hard drive? Can this also work when FrontRow is used? I have lot of personal DVDs that I bought and would like to view them from the hard drive instead of running it from the slot.
    6. How do I map the Mac Keyboard to work in Windows when running on XP? Is there a Windows software that runs as a service to make it happen?
Anything else I have to do?
    Rgds.

The Mac is safely nestled in a lot of styrofoam padding inside the box, so I doubt a ding on the outside can do much damage.

  • Emagic mt4 and intel iMac does not work with 10.4.5

    Hi there,
after updating my iMac on 10.4.5 my MT4 does not work any longer. It is still shown in the system profiler! But that`s it! After I`ve installed the latest driver (emagic v1.7), it was not shown in the audio/midi preferences. On my G4 with 10.3.9 it is still working properly. I have tried to use it with Garage Band 3, while I am waiting for Logic Pro 7.2 . It worked in the begining, but now the USB connection on the MT4 does not light up, but the midi devices. My question is: Do I need a driver using Logic Pro 7.2 with an Intel iMac? Includes the update the driver for Emagic MT4?
thanks a lot for any reply, experiences and clues

    Hi Glyn,
I will try to get some driver information of apple. Emagic is apple now, so who else could that know?! I use an m-audio fw audio-interface. For that m-audio got a driver and it works by now. Fortunately! I will tell you if apple got a clue.

  • An Intel iMac AND a MacBook Pro for Logic Pro?

I am torturing myself over this issue lately so any input you guys could offer would be welcome!
    This is the situation:
After 3 months of serious debating whether to purchase a 20" Intel iMac or a MacBook Pro for Logic Pro, I went ahead about 3 weeks ago and got the iMac. My reasoning behind this was that even though I found the portability of the MBP very desirable, the iMac simply represented a better value with the big screen and bigger hard drive. Since getting it, I must say I love this machine and I have not had one single problem with it. Logic 7.2 runs like a dream on it. By the way, aside from maintaing my iTunes Library, occasional iLife stuff and web surfing with Safari, this iMac is for music production only.
    But here's the problem:
Still, I can't seem to shake the desire for OCCASSIONAL portability. Keep in mind, I am only a "serious" music hobbyist; I create instrumental hip-hop, trip-hop, electronica style of music mainly with software instruments, loops and breakbeats. So needless to say, I don't tour or do a lot of travelling. But the prospect of being able to compose tracks or make beats in Logic anywhere is DESIRABLE to say the least. I could compose while sitting on the couch watching a game or laying in bed - even though I have no idea of how often I'd actually do that, just having the ability to do it is VERY APPEALING to me. Throw in the fact that the iMac currently shares deskspace with a PC that my wife uses - meaning that I often have to stop what I'm doing to let her use the space. With a laptop, I could move and still continue my flow. Lastly, I unfortunately have bad knees and a bad back so after a couple of hours (or 3 or 4) of sitting at the desk working on Logic, I am seriously hurting. Not comfortable at all. At least owning a MacBook would give me the option to move around to some place more comfortable if I desire.
    So...
Even though I recently bought a wonderful iMac that works great, I'm seriously considering getting a 1.83 MBP with at least 1GB of RAM and the 100GB/7200 RPM drive to accompany it just for the portability factor. Sure, I could get a used G4 PowerBook or iBook, but all I own is the Universal Binary of Logic Pro; I would have a hard time accepting the decrease in speed I've gotten use to on the Core Duo. Besides, I inherently have a problem buying something (even used) that I know is old and out of date when the latest and greatest is available.
So here is the $25,000 question: Am I nuts for even considering this? Am I placing too much of a premium on the portability as I would use it?
This could easily be justified if I was a working musician on the road, but that ain't me. And you can believe that I'm definately not rich and thus don't have money lying around.
But I have obsessed over this so much lately, I feel that I almost have to get it just to put my mind at ease! I even briefly considered putting the iMac on eBay and just buying a MBP to replace it, but I love the screen real estate I get with the 20" iMac and I question if I'll be truly satisfied with a 15.4" screen FULL TIME. 17" might be better, but I doubt if I can wait until June for them to arrive. In addition, everything would connected via my wireless LAN and .Mac so file sharing should not be an issue.
    Help!!!
What would you do? Sell the iMac or just get a MBP as cheap as I can?
    Opinions, Please!
    20" iMac Core Duo, 2GHz, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HD, 128MB VRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I love the portability my powerbook gives me. You can use a PB in your setup. You can run an external monitor for either PB or MBP. You can node. Universal Binary menas it is an application which has the components written for both PPC and Intel chips-so you don't need to do conversion. Nodes won't require you buy a nother license. so the answer is down to how much the 2 upgrades and 1 crossgrades will set you back vs how much use you'll get out of them. IMO the iMac is inexpensive (I mean that in a good way-worth hooding on to). Maybe just look at a refurb PB unless you really have the extra cash.

  • Intel iMac will not boot past gray screen

Intel iMac will not boot past gray screen
    my system:
new (month old) 24" intel imac, 2.8 ghz, 4 gb ram.
running: leopard (upgraded from tiger, which was pre-installed at purchase), installed 10.5.1 update right before this huge problem occurred.
install discs on-hand: two-disc tiget set, single leopard upgrade disc.
    what led to this:
i wanted to install windows using bootcamp on a 50 gb partition.
at this point i was running leopard 10.5
i followed all bootcamp instructions, printing out the guide, as well. once i got into the windows setup, i was prompted to choose a partition to install windows. unlike the bootcamp guide, which showed three partitions, one clearly labeled "bootcamp", i saw only one partition. not wanting to risk writing over my mac partition, i quit the setup and rebooted the mac os. after some googling around, i looked for firmware updates (didn't need any), and then software updates. i decided to try updating to 10.5.1.
i then ran through boot camp again, deleting my previous windows partition, creating a new one, and moving forward as before. once again, i was only shown one partition to choose from in the windows setup. i exited the setup again to reboot through the mac os, but this time, i was only given a blank gray screen.
here's what i have tried so far:
booting from a CD, holding down the C or D keys: no response (in fact, i have to restart the computer holding down the mouse button to be able to eject the CD)
booting with option key held down: gray screen
booting with option key held down with external bootable firewire drive attached: the firewire drive appears as a boot icon, and i can click on it within a five second window, but then the screen freezes after that time period, and nothing changes
booting into target mode while attached to another mac: gray screen (no firewire icon, and drive never shows up on other mac)
resetting NVRAM: i'm able to hear the boot chimes, but no difference in performance. gray screen every time
Safe boot: nothing but a gray screen
    Verbose mode: gray screen
    Single user mode: gray screen
Single user mode with firewire drive attached: occasionally (not every time), i am able to get the white on black terminal to show up. from here, i'm able to run fsck, but it appears to only be checking the firewire drive. i have tried several times to boot from here, and once it took me to a blue screen with movable arrow cursor, but it never went beyond this.
is there anything else left to try before taking it to apple?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd call Apple support at this point. You'll need
to put this issue on the record.
Call U.S. iPod and Mac technical support: 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273)
The wait may be long for an agent to come on the line

If you have the applecare protection plan, I'd ask about "onsite"
    service.
