Intel iMac Core Duo will not accept OS 10.4.8 update

In a rash moment I once more decided to respond to Software Update's continual reminder that I have not updated to OS 10.4.8. I tried twice before and each time resulted in disaster with what I have been told is a kernel panic. During boot-up the screens wipes to grey with a black square saying 'RESTART'.
Then follows days of scouring backups to get everything back again. Well it just did it again. Why will it not accept the (Combo or Delta) update. Some have pointed fingers at RAM but why should the RAM work fine for more than a year and suddenly not for OS 10.4.8 and then work fine again once it has all been retreated to OS 10.4.7 ?

This is all just too weird !
The Apple Hardware Test CD would not run. I tried twice. It got as far as the 'probe' and didn't get any further.
Swapped out the 2 x 1Gb RAM cards for the original (piddling) 2 x 256Mb and tried the AHT again. It ran and found no problems.
AHA ! So it was the memory all along.
Put the 2 x 1Gb cards back in and ran AHT. It ran and found no problems
Okay, let's try the new 10.4.9 update via Software Update.
SAME THING AS BEFORE. Grey screen with the little black one saying restart.
Okay I'll put the 2 x 256Mb cards in and see if it manages to start. Before doing so I gave it one more try and after a self-induced restart halfway through boot-up it started - with the 2 x 1Gb memory.
Went back to Software Update and found a Java update and Airport. Ran them and when it restarted we were back to the Grey 'panic screen'. Tried once more - same thing. Swapped memory for the 2 x 256 and the iMac started. Tried a restart just to make sure. Back to the panic screen.!
removed and replaced the 2 x 256Mb and it started up. Restarted - Panic Screen.
Put in 2 x 1Gb - it started. Restarted - Panic Screen again. Replaced 2 x 256 - started. Restarted - Panic. Restarted - It fired up. Now I'm writing this whilst it is on because I cannot guarantee it will restart without swapping memory or reseating it or maybe just ******* into the wind.
Poxy **** thing can't make up its mind. There is no pattern.

  • Problems Installing VPN Client on Intel iMac Core Duo

We tried installing the VPN Client software (v.4.9.00.0050) on an Intel Core Duo iMac by dragging the application into the applications folder on the hard drive. When trying to start VPN Client, it gave a message referring to "architecture not supported) and wouldn't start up. We have installed this successfully on other macs outside our office without problems. Does anyone have any suggestions?

For such appkcation to work in a platfrom you need to install the application using the stansard installer supplied with the application.

  • MacBook Core Duo will not load pages on known working router

I've got the original Core Duo black MacBook running OS 10.6.5 that's having problems with Wi-Fi. It will connect to networks at my school, but at home, it will connect (very slowly) to my Linksys G Router that works with my phone, my iPod touch, and my Early 2008 Aluminum iMac (OS 10.5.8), but it refuses to load web pages in Safari or Firefox, as well as it will not load the iTunes Store. If I turn on Internet Sharing at the iMac, I can use that signal to access the internet. This is not a distance issue as it has worked well in the past and the router is right next to the iMac I am using for Wi-Fi right now. I have had the issue before, but it wouldn't load pages from any Wi-Fi source, so I replaced the AirPort card with a genuine Apple 802.11N card, thus resolving that issue. I have tried resetting the router and the modem, but this has not helped.
    Thanks in advance.

Have you checked for firmware updates for the router?
If you connect to the router via Ethernet, can you get to the Internet without issue?

  • Finder/Help Blank, Jumpy or Missing on Intel iMac Core Duo

I'm trying to access the 'help' menu in the finder. I get a variety of problems but generally the help menu is blank or does a merry dance whenever I try and use it. In particular, the second item on the help menu is the offending one "...Work, Play .... It appears to have a missing icon - which is replaced by a '?'.
I've tried most of the so-called solutions including an erase/reinstall but to no avail. They DO NOT HELP. This has been the case since day 1.

PS. Please do not delete/archive or mark as 'solved' until it really is. Thanks.

    Mind if I try, Al?
    Hi Spetsnaz, try this:
Navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/caches and delete this folder:
    com.apple.helpui folder.
Try Help. Did that solve the problem? If not:
Navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences and delete the following files:
    com.apple.help.plist
    com.apple.helpui.plist
    com.apple.helpviewer.plist
Log out and back in or restart.
    Let us know.
I'm not sure about any Intel specific issues but this might help.

  • Intel iMac Core Duo: iSight/iChatAV 3 Focus Problems

My dad and I have matching Intel iMac's with same RAM etc. What I am finding with iChatAV in a 1-on-1 video chat is that in the little window that shows me what I look like, my video looks awesome, yet my dad's video looks quite out of focus. He experiences the same thing on his end. He looks fine, and I am out of focus. We are both trying iGlasses as well because the iSight is just too dang dark on its own.
Now when I had my PowerBook G4, Panther, and an external iSight whenever I chatted with buddies both my video and theirs looked AWESOME. Almost like watching HDTV.
This is very strange. I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this in iChat under the new Intel iMac's, as this is VERY unacceptable quality. I'm sure it cannot be a bandwidth issue as we both have 7Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream. And the quality I saw on the Keynote was much better than this.
Anyone else used both cameras and is finding this with the new Intel's?

Thank you, I had looked there and musta missed the 480Mb/s rating. So yes that is USB 2.0.
There is a article at CNet comparing the two cameras:
    "In summary:
    1) The external isight camera is very good (Firewire, F2.8 glass lens, auto-focus, CCD, 30 fps).
    2) The internal isight is quite poor in comparison (USB, plastic lens, fixed-focus, CMOS sensor)."
I tried a few chats with other people using new iMac's today, with the same poor results. It is an inferior camera, hands down.

  • Macbook Pro intel core duo, will not boot to anything.

Greetings, I am currently having issues with my MacBook Pro.  I get the flashing folder with the ?, but I can't boot to any of the startup utilities.  I have tried all that I have read about on other posts, such as, trying to boot with the C key held down (it just gets to the folder ?), booting to disk utility didn't work ( held down keys and it went to the folder ?), I also tried getting to the hardware test, by holding D and having the applications disk in.  And still everything I try gets me to the flashing folder ?.  Also I do have the CD's that came with the laptop and tried to install from the mas os install CD and still get to the flashing folder ?.  The reason it started doing this was because of this......  I had boot camp installed and was running dual boot with windows 7, then I had deleted the mac osx on the drive so I would only be using windows 7.  I wanted to reformat the drive after this, but had a hard time finding out a way to actually do this, as the MacBook unlike PC's, doesn't have any BIOS, and at that time didn't know all the key commands to use at startup.  So I downloaded a program from the net that can run at windows start and delete the HD before the computer fully boots windows 7.  So after I deleted the HD I could not install any program or start any of the mac utilities at startup, and I did the PRAM reset, still everything that I try it gets me to the flashing folder ?, in the end.  Could I have deleted all of the startup utilities when I wiped the HD?  If so how can I get these back on my MacBook pro if I can't get the MacBook pro to read any files or start up utilities?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: I found a way to download firmware, I thought that it could be the reason I get the flashing folder with ?, because maybe I somehow damaged the firmware on my computer when I did the reformat.  Alas I followed the directions to re-install the firmware and still I get to the same flashing folder.  I used FirmwareRestorationCD1.4  I think it is the one I needed for my model, MacBook Pro 15"  intel core 2 duo, and comes with osx 10.5 leopard I think, the OSX CD is stamped 2008 for 15" MacBook Pro.  I can't check the properties of my MacBook because it has no programs on it, but this is what I think it is from memory and deduction.  Well now I guess I have to ask the question, is the firmware the programs installed such as disk utility, and recovery mode?  I need to read more I guess, and also I thought I needed to take the 1.4 off the end of the FirmwareRestorationCD in order for it to work, but the instructions for making and using the firmware CD is a bit vague.  Another factor in this to make things more difficult, is that this computer is my second computer and it's a PC laptop, so I used a program download from the net to write .dmg files to disk, it's called Transmac, could this be another fault in my creation of the CD?  I am out of ideas again as to what I need to do to get mac OSX back on my computer,  I am still a bit new to the way macs work, so I could definatley use some advice.  thanks.

  • Pre-Intel Imac G5 17" Will not boot past safe mode, tried everything!

I have a 17" Imac with leopard that has been working fine until just recently stopped booting in anything other than safe mode. It will load the apple screen fine, then a ghost mouse image appears in the top left corner, which then appears, and sticks like you can move it. The blue screen appears and you now have your normal mouse that you can move around with the other one still froze in place, then the blue screen turns dark blue, then black and thats it. Your left with the mouse and a black screen and nothing else. I have tried resetting the ram, the hard drive checker command, apple, F O commands, single user mode, I checked the LEDS on the back the first one is always on, the second comes right on and the third lights when its supposed to. I did a complete erase and install of leopard and when the computer booted up you saw the the ghost arrow, and the same thing, but I waited awhile and you could hear the "Welcome to Leopard" music playing in the background It just doesn't make sense why the computer is not booting. Any advice is appreciated. I have tried it all. I am an apple lover, but this is one time where I am honestly about to throw it to the road.

Welcome to Discussions - from what I have seen, this could be your capacitors on your logic board about to fail, I'm afraid the cure would be a new logic bard. If you can take the back off and check to see whether the tops of the caps are bulging, that would be a definitive clue.

  • IMac's game will not accept my password i had previously entered and i see no way to change or find correct password to get into game center.  What do i do to enable game center ?

imac's game center for free games etc. on mountain lion won't allow me access with entering password i had previously installed.  So why can't i change or use my previous password?  i know of no options to enter and use my game center which i had previously used.  It is a problem,  what do i do?

  • App store will not accept my Apple ID for updates after installing Mavericks?

I have recently installed Mavericks on my Macbook Pro.  After installing it the two new updates for iPhoto and iMovie popped up.  I click on the 'update' icon and I am prompted for my Apple ID as usual.  After entering the correct ID the prompt disappears as if correct, but then re-appears asking for the password again.  The prompt does not actually say that the wrong Apple ID or password has been entered.  The updates do not install and the prompt remains.  I know I have the right ID because I can install other apps using the same ID.  I definitley have the right Apple ID.  Now I cannot open iPhoto because it says that the application is not compatible with the OS!  Has anyone got any tips on how to install these new updates and get around this error?  Any help would be appreciated.

Following the info from support I enrolled into something called Mac Up to Date program, then you give them your serial number, invoice, etc... and then they seem to review the information and decide whether you qualify or not. I am still waiting for the answer, but I seem to be eligible (bought my new iMac on the 2nd of October and a few days after it was announced that all new Macs would receive iWork for free, so I guess my computer qualifies as 'new' - it is a late 2013 model after all).
But right now all iWork apps still appear to me as paid apps on the Mac App Store. It would be much easier if they appeared as free apps right away, but it seems the Mac App Store is a bit temperamental. And then there is the problem with the iMovie and iPhoto updates, which some of us are unable to get and that it is not even generally acknowledged by the support staff.
All these issues with the App Store are surprising for a company that takes pride in making things 'easy'

  • My cd player on my apple will not accept the blank disc to burn it keeps spitting it out

    My imac
cd payer will not accept a blank cd -r to burn music it keeps spitting it out

Typically this occurs if the CD/DVD drive has been captured by a virtual machine, such as VMWare Fusion or Parallels.  If you have a virtual machine, then either close it, or disconnect the CD/DVD drive from that machine.
If that fails, try my other solution:
Subject:   Blank CD/DVD Not Recognized by Mac OSX
Problem:  Inserting a blank CD/DVD does not automatically launch the preferred application.  The report indicates "unrecognized format"
Solution:  Deleted the WDNotifier.app from the "Macintosh HD - Library - Startupitems" folder, then re-start Mac OSX.
Analysis:  WD Notifier is capturing the blank CD/DVD status and blocking it from being reported to Mac OSX.  This appears to be a Western Digital bug in their app.

  • My 2011 intel dual core duo iMac apparently has "Airport" ans apparently it is "on" although the icon (upper right) is gray. I'm not sure what "airport" is

My 2011 intel dual core duo iMac apparently has "Airport" ans apparently it is "on" although the icon (upper right) is gray. When I click on the <gray> airport icon it says it's "on" and the option is to turn it off.
I'm not sure what "airport" is, and I have no idea what a router is supposed to accomplish. I got a "smartphone" (not an iPhone, an android) and at a "Smartphone class" at the senior center I was told I need a router.

    Oly wrote:
OK, so, in installing a router could I attach the router to my Verizon DSL modem and have the iMac get it's internet from the router by wi-fi?
This way I could place the router 1/2 way between the only two places in my home where wifi devices (wife's tablet, my iMac) are.
    Yes, exactly.
For the router I suggest you consider one of the three Apple AirPort Base Stations, not only because it will be easier to get help with using them on this website, but they are generally regarded as the most reliable wireless routers. Technical support directly from Apple is free for the first 90 days.
Slightly cheaper alternatives exist. I have tried other manufacturer's wireless routers, and I don't recommend them.

  • Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.

My Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.  I've tried Option key, and Control S keys and it still will not boop up.  Can anyone help?

If you are running Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are running Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.

  • Imac intel 2 core duo running at 117 Fº. Is this healthy?

my imac intel 2 core duo running at 117 Fº. Is this healthy? The fan speeds are ODD: 998 CPU: 1198 HDD: 1199.

What you need to understand is that your processor has two different temperatures. The temperature that escapes when it leaves the processor dye is called the t case. The temperature for each core is called the tcore. If your processor temp were to be a problem one or two things can happen. The system will shut down immediately to protect itself. For quad core temperatures for example, it will shut itself down at some point at 75-80 degrees Celcius. Operating temperature of about 40-60 C when the system is fully stressed is a target temperature.

  • IMac Duo will not stream Quicktime behind my router.

Just bought a new iMac Duo it will not stream QT behind my Linksys router. Now I know this is a bug in QT and a port not being open for this new version of QT on the Duo because all other Macs I have work fine.
If I move the iMac Duo to a DMZ zone it will stream just fine.
Now what UDP or TCP port range do I need to open for this iMac Duo version of QT 7.0.4 to stream properly ?????
    Thank you for your help.

Does this affect the system even without the firewall turned on? I don't have the firewall enabled (at least I think it is off - bear with me as this is my first Mac I noticed that neither the HTTP (port 80) nor UDP (port 554) work for my iMac, although my wife's iBook G4 and my other PC, an Athlon64 Windows XP box, play streaming Quicktime flawlessly over HTTP behind my NetGear DSL router. My iMac fails with connection error -5420.
All things considered, since I am a recent Mac owner (only had the thing for a about a week) and it is my first, I am very happy. I am just a bit disappointed in Apple for a problem like this since media technologies are their bread and butter.
Any more thoughts are certainly welcome.
