Intel imac line out hifi trouble

Hello all, i just tried an unsucessful search and decided to just post my question. I bought an imac intel duo a month or so ago. I was not impressed with the speakers so i bought the apple hifi to go with my ipod and also plug into my imac. Everything worked fine for about 3 days. Then any audio output coming from the computer is messed up. It is just garbage coming over the line. I unplugged the hifi and it plays fine with the ipod and the internal speakers for the imac work fine. Also when i plug in a pair of head phones the imac line out sounds the same garbage as the hifi. Can the line out jack break on its own. Also i live in north louisiana and the closest apple store in 3 hours away in dallas. I have the apple card plan for 3 years, but i really don't want to drive all the way to dallas. If anyone has heard of this or has a fix please email me at [email protected] I can't guarantee you i can find this thread again to read the response if i get any.
bye and up till now i have loved my imac
roland

I bought the applecare package, and they are sending someone out to take a look. I removed parallels and windows xp virtual computer, Although, i would like them back, if they caused the problem, it didn't correct it when parallels when bye bye.
Anyway, hopefully this applecare rep, will be a smart fellow and know his stuff, and not rip apart my machine. I am kinda worried. Anyone had any experiences with applecare outcall tech's. Let me know, i always prefered the incalls better myself, but this is my first time again.
Don't know if anyone got my lame pun, but any feedback about applecare would be apprecieted... And i will update the result and if the problem is solved, i will change the status of my question to answered.

  • 06' Intel iMac: lines on screen

    Howdy!
    ...I have a 2006 intel iMac (17" 2.0GHZ)...-it's been a trusty workhorse for years.
We recently started seeing vertical lines on the right side of the screen, just a few at first then a couple more down the center. Now there is a solid barrabout 1.5 inches wide down the left side of the screen. Im afraid that my mac is about to die
After researching the problem with various web forums i learned that this is a flaw in this particular model.
Does anybody know if Apple would be willing to fix this without charging me?...I've read in some cases they have done this for customers.
Any insight on this would be most appreciated!
    Thanks!

Same problem with a 2006 iMac 17".  Apple used to have a maintenance program (EM80) that would fix it, but Apple expired it in spring 2011.  The support line said they were out of parts, unless you live in California, which apparently requires manufacturers to maintain parts for seven years!  The stupidity of telling me that should be obvious.  Also, the local Apple store quoted $600 to repair it.  How they can do that if Apple is "out of parts" is beyond me.
The support desk did offer me $100 toward the purchase of a new iMac; the local store offered a 15% discount.  From all the discussion and forums, it's obvious that this is a manufacturing or design issue and not a random event.  Several thousand users have been impacted.  I'm disappointed that Apple will not stand behind their products.  Certainly makes me less likely to purchase another one.

  • Intel iMac connection to HiFi uk

Can anybody advise re the best way to connect my iMac - 6 months old - to an Hi Fi. A modest Yamaha one - DAB and CD in one unit. All these HiFi units have digital OUT but not in.
How do I get digital out of the iMac?
Do I need a special cable to convert DVI to sound only?
Can I use an external soundcard - Creative or Firebox?
Am I fretting needlessly and just connect the 3.5mm h/phone socket to the photo in on the Hi Fi?
    Any Mcviews?

    You have many options, including:
    1. Use an Airport Express, this has optical and stereo output for your hi-fi, and can receive music from iTunes
    2. Use an Apple TV which has optical and stereo outputs, although maybe overkill if you just want audio
    3. Get something like the Squeezebox from Slim Devices, also has optical and stereo outputs and does not require iTunes (but does require you run a small server process on your Mac instead)
I have all three in Brixton !

  • Internet connection on Intel iMac cuts out after screensaver.

Hello. First, I need to point out that the issue I'm having is specific to this machine; other computers in our home network running a myriad of operating systems have no trouble whatsoever sustaining their internet connection, including a MacBook. Whatever's going wrong is going wrong with this machine only.
We have a DSL connection from Verizon, being split through a NetGear router. We have tested this connection wired and wirelessly, and there is no flaw with it. The only problem is the iMac; the problem persists when it's connected to the router using an ethernet cable AND when it connects wirelessly through AirPort.
The problem is this: Whenever this iMac goes to screensaver or goes to sleep, its internet connection stops working after it wakes up. I don't mean to say that the connection gets interrupted, rather that it stops working entirely. I cannot ping any address from the terminal, not even the router. Safari and Firefox both stop recognizing the internet connection. The computer has to be restarted before the iMac will realize it has an internet connection again.
What can cause this, and what is the solution? Thanks.

I should also point out that the issue is specific to Mac OSX. This computer has a Windows XP partition. I just tested the issue on the Windows partition, both with screen saver and standby, and it was able to sustain its internet connection with no issues whatsoever. To clarify, multiple computers with Mac OSX have not had this problem, and this computer, using a different operating system, has not had this problem. The issue is totally isolated to this one specific machine, using one specific operating system.

  • Hdajackretask line out question

    Hi there!
I want to remap (retask) headphones jack (3.5 mm) to act as line out.
Trouble is in that I can choose only from "Line out front", "Line out back", "Line out center", "Line out side", but I want just one simple "Line out" to connect to 1 channel amplifier.
What can I make in such situation? Will "Line out front" be suitable in such situation? May be "Advanced options" checkbox will help (but I don't know how to configure port in this mode)?
    Thanks.

Better audio would be relative.  Remember the audio will only be as good as the weakest link in the chain.  If you are prepared to use high quality audio files, amplification and speakers or headphones, then yes, you can get better audio performance.  But if you are only planning to make a partial commitment, you aren't going to get any gain and will just waste your money.
Here is an example of a iPhone/iPad/iPod D/A device on Amazon.  I'm sure there are many more you can check out.
    http://www.amazon.com/Nuforce-ICON-IDO-SILVER-Audiophile-Grade-Headphone-Devices /dp/B005LRTH5Q/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1414176166&sr=8-7&keywords=ipod+lightning+ cable+headphone+amps
You don't want to go too cheap because a poor quality D/A converter may make the audio worse.  What devices like this does, is take a function that your iPad already does through built-in circuitry and do it externally with the assumption that you can buy a D/A converter and amplifier with higher quality components than those used by Apple.

  • Anyone using a NEW intell iMac with Logic?

I've got many great responses on both sides to my question regarding my quest to determine which machine to use with Logic -- new Mac Pro (the ultimate) or new iMac (likely cover my bases for a long while and save major cash now). One point raised against iMac was fan noise smack dab in the middle of the listening field with the older iMacs. So a sub question to my original is this:
Are there any NEW intell iMac users out there who are using Logic? Is fan noise a problem? Generally, how do you like the iMac's feasibility as a music workstation with Logic? How many tracks/effects are you running and how is it working for you?

Before those concerns are completely alleviated, go over to the iMac hardware forum and do a search for firewire issues. Like actual physical problems with the jacks on the 20" iMac and having drives just completely "disappear".
the reason you will find issues including firewire ones on the imac forum is because it is a forum for people with issues. it may or may not be the case that there is a subsantial issue with FW on the intel imacs, but obviously people who are having issues are going to pop up there making it seem like everyone is having an issue.
for certain types of music production, an imac would be completely unsuitable. but for others it will be ideal.
there drawback of having 800 and 400 FW bus shared is that if you have a 400 device it will slow down 800 devices to 400. that means it would be ideal for impiro to have either both FW drive and interface as 800's or not go to any further expense of getting an 800 hard drive to use for audio since he would not beneift from the speed.
not a great big deal IMO.
iMac DOES lack expandibility, but it doesn't lack horses. actually i would say (and have said) that impiro would do better with an older tower to allow for expandability because he doesn't need that many horses to do what he needs to do. and i certainly feel that it is unnecessary to spend money on a computer that would be better spent on other things relating to the move to computer based music mixing.
never-the-less, the kind of live musician-audio-based music impiro is going to be making is childs play for modern computers. he will be able to run loads of tracks and plug-ins before a new imac will even break a sweat. even with an interface and a FW drive on 1 bus running at 400. he just won't be able to run loads and loads.
and man....even if he decides to get more heavily into it and start buying third party cards and this that and the next thing he can look at the next computer being a tower. personally, i am changing my computer every 3 years or less - it'll take him at least that long to find the ceiling on a new imac.

  • I just replaced the power supply in my Intel imac and now the screen is really really dark and I see the missing folder icon, what do I do?

The power supply in my Intel iMac went out (and smelled pretty burned) so I replced it and now when I start it up the display is so dark I can hardly see it and it shows the missing folder icon. Is it the inverter? Or if shine a flashlight on it and re-install the OS will changing the display settings maybe fix it?

Thanks for ur quick reply to my problem. I tried all of that with no results... I did notice tho that the lights next to and above my caps lock key and my num lk key are now flashing. They flash in unison three times then there is a two second pause then they flash three more times and this repeats. They may have been doing this before I tried this solution but I did not take notice until now... I was also wondering how I am supposed to know, after pressing f10 to enter bios, how I can tell if my new drive is being detected when my monitor will not function? Was pressing f10 supposed to possibly make the monitor turn on? In a last ditch effort to try and further identify the problem, I re installed my old drive. Before replacing it my computer would begin to boot then display a hard error that would not allow me to continue booting and run Windows. My display would still work but I could not run Windows. After re installing the drive the monitor will not turn on. I'm beginning to think that I have a bad monitor. Is there a way of testing this with out buying one? Where does the monitor connect to the mother board? I wonder if maybe its been jarred loose, although I highly doubt it, it may still be worth looking at. Thanks again for your advice.

  • Intel iMac keeps randomly dropping Airport connection

My Intel Duo core iMac keeps randomly dropping its Airport connection. It never used to do this until a few months ago. The Airport menu bars randomly show half grey, or all grey, and either I have to turn Airport on/off from the menu to get all the bars back to black, or sometimes they just come back on.
Logically, I guess it can only be three things, a problem in the (a) Intel iMac (eg. airport card), (b) my Airport Express Base station, or (c) my ADSL 2+ NetComm modem router. Now, fortunately I have a first generation white G5 iMac set up side by side to help diagnose the problem. When the Intel iMac airports bars go half grey or all grey, the Airport bars on the white G5 iMac stay black or at worst show one grey bar.
At face value, I guess this points to the Intel iMac itself being the problem? Or could it be that the Airport Express Base station is the problem, and the Intel iMac is more sensitive to the problem than the white G5 iMac? I'm sort of leaning to the Airport Base station as the problem because when the Intel iMac drops out, the white G5 coincidentally drops out albeit by only one grey bar generally.
Its quite annoying because its so unpredictable and intermittent. My Intel iMac has full Applecare, but I would feel stupid to haul it into Apple only for them to say I wasted their time and the problem must be the Airport Base station/modem router.
    All comments welcome!

Well, for what its worth, I'll give you the update to my problem. The Apple technician said during all their testing, my Intel iMac never dropped the Airport connection once - and the problem might be some interference between the iMac and the Airport Express unit. That didn't quite make sense because my white G5 iMac seems fine; the occasional variable signal but not a full drop out. Anyway, the technician said he applied a 'few software updates' - although I don't know what these updates were, especially since I always apply Apple public updates as they are released.
Now, when I got my Intel iMac back about a week ago, I am very happy to say the dropout/weak signal problem appears to be no more (touch wood). Thus, I don't know what was done, but it has seemingly fixed things so far.
Would anyone know what updates Apple might have applied - and I assume its something that is not readily available to the public, since I always keep an eye on public software updates.

Hold down the option key and select

  • Xbox 360 - Optical line-in pass through 5.1 to optical line-out on an iMac?

Hi guys, i'm in the market to purchase a new 5.1 surround sound system for my room and the following issue has been purplexing me.
IS it possible to daisy chain my XBOX 360 to my iMac with optical cables and pass through 5.1 surround sound to the decoder on the sound system?
So i'd have an optical cable from my xbox to the line-in on my iMac. I'd use Rogue Amoeba's Line-In app to pass the sound through to the optical line-out and through to the sound system.
(I know it works using stereo sources, but i don't know about 5.1 digital sound.)
I also know i could just connect them both to separate optical ports on the sound sytem, but i'm trying to listen to 2 sources at the same time. (5.1 from XBOX and music from iMac).
Any thoughts on this are appreciated!

I'm convinced things work like this:
The SBX-Fi receives the encoded SPDIF.<
The drivers decode it into the 5 digital audio signals. This siimply regenerates what was put into the encoding and has no effect on its "volume."<
The 5 digital audio signals are sent to the SBX-Fi hardware, as is.<
The signals are widened (not sure about the SBX-Fi, but for SBLi've-/SBAudigy-series card it's 32-bits with IIRC 4 bits for headroom, which is 24dB) at input by the SBX-Fi hardware. The additional headroom is probably able to handle most effects/mixing which might happen, but might produce a signal which would clip on output if the intermediate results produce a digital volume over 00%.<
The master output volume operates on the output signals before they are narrowed.<
The output signals are narrowed (dithered) and distributed.<
If that's correct, it means you should be able to simply lower the master output volume in the soundcard mixer; and that presumes something's going on like high Crystalizer settings, or something; to elminate clipping distortion.

  • Intel iMac Component Video Out

Has anyone tried a component video out connection to an HDTV from the Intel iMac? I've read from the ATI website that the new Radeon X1600 card supports component video out with an adapter.
There was never a really good way to do this with previous Mac models.

A little more news about component out from the Intel iMac 20"
The VGA adapter included with my 12" iBook does not fit the mini-dvi port on the iMac. So you need to buy a new adapter from Apple.
    Also:
I tried using a VGA-to-component cable with the iBook VGA adapter and a standard television set. The cable is designed to interface a component-out DVD player to a VGA-in BenQ projector. I ran the cable to the component-in jacks on my Sanyo (analog-non HD) television. No go. Tried several resolutions and adapter refresh rates, and got some smeared video, but it made me nervous and I stopped experimenting. Haven't tried this cable with my HDTV for fear of damage.
Basically, the cable was meant to take a video signal from the DVD player to the projector. My experiment was mac to TV.
So sad, oh so sad ;<

  • Line in of Intel iMacs OK??

    Hi,
for the last 3 years my eMac + Logic have been doing a great job as my recording equipment. I always use the line in of the eMac as audio interface, and I'm satisfied with it's quality (the same applies for it's predecessor, a G3 iMac).
Just curious: is the line input of the Intel iMac just as good?? And how does it work exactly? I'm reading something about a combined analog/digital connector???
    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Jaap

its better. its optical so u can use both optical connects or the 3.5mm jack. this also makes 5.1 output via an optical cable possable

  • Greenish Vertical Lines in Intel imac 21.5" 2008

I have an intel Imac 21.5" 2008 that has some kind of cloudy greenish vertical lines in pairs all over the screen. Here is a photo http://imageshack.us/f/845/img0041wy.jpg/ Any ideas whats causing this?
I had the same problem about a year ago and apple care covered all expenses. Now that i dont have apple care I was hoping this was a quick fix or at least get an idea how much its gonna cost.
Any help would be awesome guys

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
I see the bars. Although it looks like a display issue, first reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 Do the same with the PRAM > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If they don't work, the display is damaged. For hardware problems, there isn't a software solution, so the only thing you can do is to take it to an Apple Store or reseller.
I have never had any problem with my Late 2009 21'5-inch iMac, but in 2012, my GPU failed, I suspect because of high temperatures

  • Trouble with intel iMacs and OD binding

When setting up 12 of our new iMacs at school this fall, I've run into a problem. Once bound to our OD server, the machines will hang intermittently during boot (before a login screen).
In this lab we have 16 eMacs running 10.4.7, and now 12 intel iMacs running 10.4.7. The OD server is 10.4.7 server.
All machines were first bound to our school's AD server and tested. All logged in for two days of students.
Then today the OD server was finally up and running for mcx settings. The 16 eMacs were added without problem. The iMacs were added, but now if they are restarted they often hang. Rebooting them may fix it. Sometimes they need to be rebooted several times.
Once an intel iMac makes it to the log in screen they act as they should. They authenticate first to AD, then get whatever mcx settings they need from the OD.
Tried: clearing out all bindings and caches and starting fresh.
Note: The OD master is not bound to the AD, The OD server's kerberos record is disabled as outlined in this help article (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300765)
    Any help?

You don't really need the old OS 9 printer utility - other than to know how many prints your printer has made. It prints fine in OS X at it's best resolution.
I am using this printer everyday w/ an intel iMac.
Of course ... you need to connect your 16/600 to your network through an ethernet hub.
In System Preferences - Network - make AppleTalk active.
Then go to the Print & Fax preferences and set up new printer.
The 16/600 will show up there.

  • All Intel iMac are running 10.4.4 out of the box, right?

I got my iMac about a couple weeks ago. Since the Intel iMac was released on the same day that the 10.4.4 update came out, I assume all the new Intel iMacs already have that update installed. Am I correct in assuming that?

    Hi Mr. Large
Click on the apple in your menu bar and then click on "About This Mac". This will tell you what version of Mac OS X you are running. If you want to find out more about your Mac's hardware and software you can click on "More Info…". This will open the utility System Profiler (this is to be found in your Utilities folder). It's worth browsing this to see what you have got.
