Intel iMac, old Photoshop

Not sure what category my problem fits into. Ages ago I bought Photoshop 6.0 for my G4/500. I upgraded to OS10.3.9, and I upgraded my Photoshop to CS2. I just got an Intel-based iMac, and want to transfer CS2 over, but when I try I get a message that says "one or more files in the Adobe Application Support folder, necessary for running Photoshop, are missing. Please run Photoshop installer and re-install Photoshop." Then I get a message that says"Your Adobe Photoshop user name or serial number is missing or invalid. The application cannot continue and must now exit." I can't reinstall Photoshop 6.0 from the original disc since it is a Classic Application and won't work with Intel-based Macs, and since I bought CS2 as a downloadable upgrade, I can't install it without 6.0 installed on the computer. I don't want to have to buy CS3 software when all I should have to do is buy the upgrade, but I have no idea what to do here. Anyone more experienced than I (which means almost anyone reading this!) got any thoughts? Thanks very much for your time.

You cannot just copy the CS2 Application folder over and expect it to work. It needs to be installed properly or possibly transfered over using the Migration Assistant. There is usually a way to install an upgrade clean by entering the the Photoshop 6.0 serial followed by the CS2 serial. I would contact Adobe Support and see what they recommend. Just an fyi CS2 is not optimized to run on the Intel platform either so ideally you will want to get the CS3 version of Photoshop for the best performance.

  • After Migration to new iMac, old Photoshop won't launch

I used the Migration Assistant in Firewire Target Disk Mode to transfer my old Apps and files and folders from my intel Macbook to my new 24" iMac. I had to do it several times since it transferred Applications okay, and all the folders, but the folders were empty on the new machine. I finally had to drag and drop the contents of most folders. Everything seems to be working okay now except for one glaring failure. My old Photoshop 7.0.1, which was working just fine in Rosetta on the Macbook, no longer works at all. It will not even launch. I get an error message that due to an "unrecoverable error" in programming, Photoshop will close now, almost as soon as it tries to start. I have a number of other Power PC applications (even Adobe ones) of similar vintage that are working just fine. I tried reinstalling the Application entirely (still have all my old Apps!), but it had no effect on the failure to launch. I checked with Adobe and they declined to support such an old version. Any ideas on what could be causing this that I might check? Having blown all my money on the new iMac I really cannot afford to purchase a new Photoshop right now.

Photoshop 7 is not compatible with Mac OS 10.5 and Adobe offers no fix. You'll need to upgrade.

  • Intel iMac and PHotoshop Elements 4 compatability

Can anyone tell me if Photshop Elements 4 will run on the new i-Mac with Intel Processor? I'd like to know before I buy it. The sales people say Yes, but does anyone have experience with it yet?

I have experience with Photoshop from CS2.
Until PE is a Universal binary it will run with Rosetta, the emulation software in OS X that translates PPC code to Intel code on the fly. The software should run fine. It may take longer to start, but then it should run as fast or faster then on a PPC Mac. Rosetta and PPC apps use more memory so you should quit any apps you aren't using until you get Ub updates for any PPC apps you are running.

  • Anyone ran Photoshop or Adium on at new Intel Imac

i really want a new one.... but as a hobby photographer i really use photoshop cs2 and adium chat software. could anyone comment for me!!! if it does work how well?

Hello. My husband is a photographer & upgraded the RAM to 2GB on his 20" intel iMac. Photoshop CS2 & Bridge run fine, only a wee bit of slowness--but not sluggish by any means. The resolution is beautiful on this machine & I think you'd be happy...but if you can max the RAM to 2GB, then definitely do so to keep PS happy

  • How do I use my Intel iMac to see the screen on my old G5

The screen on my old G5 is fading fast and I would like to connect it to my newer Intel iMac and use it's screen to be able to see what i'm doing. Is there a way to do that?

Fortunately I was just able to make out the Screen Sharing check box on my older Mac. As soon as I checked it and opened the file on the newer Mac there was the screen. Perfect. Thanks so much.

  • Old ibook connected to Airport extreme on Intel iMac looses internet.

For the third time in a year since I got my new iMac Intel Core Duo machine the wireless connection between it and my old 2001 ibook (with and external USB --afterthemac.com) wireless device has lost the internet connection for the ibook. I am using the iMac as a airport base station with my iBook and it has worked flawlessly for most of the time since Feb when I got my new iBook but this is now the third time (for no apparent obvious reason to me) that while the System Preferences for the USB wireless device show a 70-75 strength connection via airport my internet (entourage email, safari browser) and wireless printing are all dead.
The last two times it happened I did a permissions fix on the iBook (nothing happened) and then reinstalled the driver for the USB wireless dongle. And I got the internet and printing through the printer on my iMac back. This did not work this time. I am set to Automatic in my Network preferences and am using use DCHP and have an ip address and such that are dynamically assigned. -- that still shows.
I have also rebooted my iMac, stopped and restarted airport on my iMac "base station" (afer a minute) and still no internet but the system preferences still show a wireless connection. I have run out of ideas to connect and wonder what else I a missing but some sites I have looked talk about the mysterious loss of inernet (while wireless appears to be working fine).
What is really weird is I also tested a Zen-Cart-MySQL server running on my localnet of my iMac and I actually got a connection of sorts by my ibook (once) today. It displayed the text portion of my Zen-Cart test screen but no graphics -- did not work next time. So it appears I almost have a connection of sorts with my iMac from my iBook but definately not an internet connection.
One final note, my new Intel iMac is connected to my cable modem via an old Netgear router (which is working fine for the iMac). I do not suspect there is any reason for this to be the problem since the ibook is using the shared connection of the iMac. But thought I would mention.
The ibook as I mentioned is the old 2001 dual USB model (white) it has only about 400 MB ram, a 10GB HD (but works great for email and web browsing for my wife). It has OS X 10.4.4, I have not bothered upgrading it any further because the HD has only about 2 GB of space free and other than this now third time of losing the internet connection it has worked fine and I hate to mess up this email/web machine my wife uses.
So if anyone has ideas of where I can go next to troubleshoot I would appreciate it.
    Thanks

Ok appears I solved my problem but not sure why.
While I was posting this around I stumbled on a solution so my question is why. I read somehwere about rebooting the router even thoug it is connected to the iMac and my internet works fine there. Well I rebooted that and the internet for my ibook came back instantly. So since the ibook is sharing the imac connection to my cable modem via rouer using the airport on the iMac why would the router block my iBook and not iMac that is directly wired to the old router (it is not a wireless router)
I want to learn why this now works so I can deal with it more effectively in future.
    Thanks,

  • Transfer content from old power imac to new intel imac

What are the dos and do nots when transferring the content from my 6 year old power imac to a new intel imac top of the range?
    Thanks, Tom

There are caveats migrating from PPC to Intel, I had no problems, but see Kappy's fine/detailed "A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs"...

  • Transferring from old non intel iMac to new intel iMac

I have a non intel iMac with 10.5.8 and no 800 Firewire. I have just purchased a new iMac with Snow Leopard and of course, no 400 firewire. The wrong adapter (400 to 800) was sent with the machine. The setup instructions said I could use ethernet after installing a "Setup Program" on the old Mac that was included on the new Mac's disk. When I tried to install the program, it wouldn't install as I did not have 10.6 on the old computer.
Please tell me the best way to set up this new computer: using the ethernet cable and migration assistant, or wait and get the correct adapter and use a firewire cable to transfer. I have not set up the new computer; it is just sitting right now.
    Many thanks.

You're probably referring to the section of this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3231
in the first point under *Starting your migration:*
"Always ensure that the computer you are migrating from is updated with the latest releases of Apple Software. Determine if your computer is up-to-date by going to the Apple menu and selecting Software Update. Apply all the latest updates, including the Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update, before you start your migration."
The Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update link is to this: http://support.apple.com/downloads/Migrationand_DVD_and_CD_SharingUpdate
Which also refers to this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3174
As I read that, it seems to indicate that it's only needed on 10.5.5, so it may not apply to your 10.5.8 Mac.
Try using +Setup Assistant+ anyway -- it may work.
See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups? or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum, for more info and step-by-step instructions.
If you've already set up a user account on the new Mac, you'd have to erase the internal HD and reinstall OSX to use Setup Assistant.
Or, use the similar +Migration Assistant+ per the pink box in the link above. Just note that you can't be logged on to the new Mac with an account that has the same name as any on the old one -- see the last window there.

  • Photoshop cs2 & intel-iMac

Ive been having issues w/my iMac.
I'm wondering if photoshop is causing system problems in my intel iMac.
I've seen several discussions and articles that the program was not prepared for the intel switch and is the root of many iMac issues.
Anyone know if it would do better installed on my external HD, or if it wouldn't make a difference?
    Any similar experiences?
    Any fixes?

    Hello, DREAZ
~Bee pointed me to your post for my thoughts, so I will try to help, too. PhotoShop should work without causing problems on your iNtel Mac. Here are some ideas for your consideration.
    (1) If you are working on huge (multiple-gigabyte) PhotoShop images (or launching CS2 by clicking on huge image files,) any computer will respond slower. However, if your saved file size is under a hundred megs, image size is not your problem. If you need to post back for more suggestions, let us know whether you launch CS2 by clicking on the application icon or on the icon for your image files.
    (2) You should have sufficient RAM, but you do not tell us how much free space you have on your hard drive. Use File > Get Info on your startup drive and post back what fraction of disk space is "Available." You should try to keep at least several tens of GB free for best results when working on large PS file. I always keep more than 50GB free on my startup disk (that also holds my applications and PhotoShop image cache.)
    (3) If you have multiple applications open while you are using CS2, quit everything, restart your Mac, and launch CS2 by itself to see whether your performance improves to an acceptable level. If you need to post back for more suggestions, time how long after you click the icon it takes for CS2 to launch and be ready to use after your restart. Post the answer back here.
    (4) You can save your image files to your external drive, but installing CS2 on an external drive will not make it work better unless your startup disk has problems. Do you regularly perform Mac OS X routine maintenance?
    ( "Routine maintenance" means items a) , b) , and c) from
Travis A.- kmosx: Regular Maintenance / General Troubleshooting)
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=196761http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=196761
If you have not recently performed maintenance, do so now and see if you problem persists.
    (5) Have you changed your PhotoShop "Plug-In & Scratch Disk" location or "Memory & Image Cache" usage Preferences? Improper settings for these preferences can adversely effect performance.
    (6) Although I know of no specific problems with any third-party PhotoShop plug-ins, if you have installed any special PhotoShop add-on plug-ins, and if your problem persists after considering the other suggestions here, I suggest you check the plug-in developer's website or technical support to see whether there might be known issues with their software.
    (7) If none of the above helps, we may be able to offer other suggestions based on your responses to the questions above.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • Installing Photoshop 5 on Intel iMac?

I want to use my Photoshop program on my new Intel iMac. My full program is PS5, which had to be installed before I can upgrade to PS7. Has anyone found a work-around the problem of installing this older version of Photoshop on the new OSX? I don't want to pay $600+ all over again for new software if I can help it.
    KCChoirgirl

I am reasonably sure that version of PS is an OS 9
only application. You cannot install it on an Intel
Mac. If your PS7 is an OS 9 version, you couldn't
    update to it anyway.
Adobe has upgrade prices for their software. You may
be able to upgrade to an OS X version for less than
    $600.00.

Thank you for taking time to answer my question. Unfortunately, it is the answer I feared I would get. But the good news is that Adobe HAS an upgrade solution. I have paid for the full version twice as I have two PS5s. (We own a photography studio in case that sounds weird!)

  • Photoshop CS on Intel iMac

Just got a new Intel iMac and installed my copy of Creative Suite on it.
Illustrator and InDesign work fine, but Photoshop CS 'unexpectedly quits' when I try to open it.
Is this a common problem? Any work around?

I had to install Photoshop a 2nd time to get past its quirkiness on Intel through Rosetta. Some folks have dragged the installer from the disk to their HD to install problem apps.
Also make sure after installing that you get any updates for all the CS2 apps. Don't install Version Cue, it is currently incompatible.

  • Intel iMac and OLD G4 (OS 9.2.2) on same Internet connection? need sources

    Hi, folks,
I have a new iMac Intel dual core machine running OS 10.4.7. I also have a very old PowerMac G4 - the CPU rating is less than 350MHz - that has OS 9.2.2 installed. Right now, I'm only using the new iMac, and I'm moving in a couple of weeks.
I’d like to set up the old Mac so that I can use it to listen to Internet radio; we can’t get many stations where we live.
Ideally, I’d like to set up a wireless network, but my phone company/DSL service (Verizon) does not support Macs for wireless, even though they are sending me a wireless router for my new DSL connection! I also would rather not have to go buy a bunch of memory, cards, or a new OS for my old Mac.
Can I set up a LAN so that both Macs can use the DSL connection over Ethernet wires?
Alternately, can a wireless network work with a cable modem set up instead of DSL? We do have access to cable Internet service. (Their web site says it's intended to hook up only one computer, not a network.)
I have never done anything like this before, so if anyone can just point me at a book, article, or web site, I’ll be happy to go read about it first.
    Thanks a bunch.

Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   plus old G4 OS 9.2.2

... my phone company/DSL service (Verizon) does not support Macs for wireless, even though they are sending me a wireless router for my new DSL connection!
They may or may not support it, but it should work just fine. A router is a router is a router; they all speak standard (and pretty ancient, at this point) protocols (DHCP, IPv4, IS-ES, ARP) on the LAN, once you're above the physical/media-access-control layers (wired Ethernet vs. 802.11g wireless).
If your PowerMac doesn't support wireless as-is, then you'll have to figure out whether the router they send supports wired as well as wireless, or else find a wireless adapter for the PowerMac.

  • Weird display issues on 24" iMac (old Intel model)

Hi, I just bought a 24" Intel iMac (used) and it performs great...except I'm wondering if the display is on the verge of going dead because after extensive use the display will get really hot and then weird things will happen like a split moment of discoloration (saw it once on the "word of the day" screensaver), or I might get this weird sort of "fuzzy" black line at parts of the screen or sometimes when I minimize a window or click on an icon in the dock (I have the magnification function set) parts of it may "stick" to the screen. I also tried playing Nexuiz and the game would freeze and/or just have moments where it looks completely weird or excessive screen flicker. When it looked that way I took a screenshot just to see if it would capture it, but when I look at the screenshot everything looks right so I don't think it's the graphics card. Mind you I've never had a problem playing that game on my old eMac. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may fix this problem? Has anyone else experienced this?

I have been having the following trouble with my 2 y/o, 24" iMac: 1. the screen freezes/locks up (for a better description) wherein the entire screen goes blank. It takes a power off/on reboot to get it back. 2. Screen burn (or as Apple calls it, "persistence" wherein with a solid color background, you can still see pages that were previously opened as well as shadows of the icons in the dock. I've had two calls to Tech Support and have taken the iMac to the Genius Bar three times. Nothing was found the first time. The hard drive was replace the second time, and the LCD screen was replace the third time. The lock up has not occurred since the screen was replaced, but I still can see persistence. I can actually read the date on the calendar icon if I move the dock from the bottom position to the left or right of the screen. Part of the persistence has, in fact, gone away, that is, a big, dark area from the bottom to the top of the screen on the left half. I'm about to call Tech Support and suggest that they have done everything they can and carrying this computer back and forth to the Apple store is getting old. Here is an article on "persistence" that was sent by an Apple technician. Perhaps, it will help you.

Can I boot up an intel imac running os lion from a snowleopard install disk so that I can run my old power pc software

If the Snow Leopard install disk came with or otherwise is compatible with your iMac, you can boot from it, but that won't allow you to run software (other than the utilities that are part of the installation set). You will have to install Snow Leopard, either on a partition on the iMac's internal hard drive or on an external drive, before you will be able to run applications.
