Intel iMac Power / Overheat issue?

Hi there,
I have an Intel iMac from 2006. About 2 years ago it started to just turn itself off randomly as if there was a power failure. When it does, the only way to power it back up is to switch it off at the plug, switch it back on and press the power button (strangely) twice. I have noticed it seems to be temperature related - when my iMac reaches around 78C (which I'm pretty sure it should be able to handle fine?) it tends to be in the danger zone and at any minute can switch itself off.
I've got around this by using smcFan Control - which thankfully displays the temperature in the menu bar meaning when I hit around 72C I can whack the fans up to full blast to keep the temperature down. Being a sound studio computer - the hum of the fans really isn't ideal, but it at least makes my computer usable. However, I'm currently in the middle of a big project on Logic and I've had to turn my room into a fridge (window open-more clothes on) to be able to work on it as all the processing involved heats it up to 75C+ in no time.
I was hoping someone could shed some light on this or at least tell me if I am right in thinking that 78C is nothing really and the iMac should deal with it easily.
I have seen tons of posts regarding the G5 iMac power problems and similar problems with the intel iMacs - I've done all the hardware resets (PRAM, SMC, PMU) as suggested in these forums but nothing has helped.
I have had the power supply changed in the past (before this problem arose) as one day it just went kaput. Don't know if that makes any difference but I'm pretty sure that the problem started a little while after the replacement was installed.

LR is a Universal Binary app. YOu're good to go. I did a migration from iBook to MacBook recently with no issues.

1st Gen iMac Power Supply Issue

I just got my iMac G5 back from Apple after having the power supply and logic board replaced for the second time in two years.
It is apparently a fairly common problem with the first generation iMac G5s. I've basically been told it's a problem with no real solution and that they'll fix it for free (for the first three years). It's great that I'm within the three years, but if it happens again after October, I'm likely going to have to foot the bill to get it repaired.
Does anyone have any more detailed info on this issue (other than Apple's Repair Extension doc)? Would turning off the computer each night prolong the life of those parts? Would turning it on/off everyday reduce the life of those parts?
Any thoughts/comments?

Just to add to BB's comments, I doubt that leaving the computer on will have any benefit at all for you in terms of longevity. If you have problems with faulty capacitors , and the like, in fact it will probably make the issue worse rather than better (though I doubt this will be a problem for you if your logic board was replaced after about April 2005). Doing so will probably also add a little extra wear to the bearings of your HD (unless you have it set to spin down when not needed) , and will cost you a little more (but not a whole lot - though when we all leave them running the environmental costs continue to mount) in electricity over time.
You should probably also shut down every so often anyway - maybe once a week or so, to help clear some potential memory issues that can persist with some applications even under OSX, and you should certainly shut down at and start up again at any time when you notice slowdowns, program "hangs" or other problems.

Slightly Different CRT iMac Power Up Issue

So I saw several variations on CRT iMac Start-Up Power issues, but none seemed quite what I have going on. I have a graphite CRT iMac (bought around 2000) that I was hoping to limp along with for a good chunk of this year but realized it's time might almost be up. I'm now worried it sensed me drooling over a new Mac Pro, got jealous, and fried itself... grin
The house had a power outage recently, and I do keep it plugged into a surge protector. However since then, when I press the power button it gives an initial chime as usual for a second with what sounds like the drive starting to whir and then immediately shuts down again. Repeat presses of the power button do nothing... UNLESS I unplug the power cord and plug it back in and it does the same chime w/ immediate shutdown.... I've opened the case, attempted to reset the CUDA or whatever it is called (if I'm pressing the right button like I think so...) and tried to blow the dust out as best I can. I've tried booting it upside down as suggested in other items. I haven't replaced the battery, which I assume is the one that looks like a short fat AA battery (Made in France which I found interesting for some reason...)?
Any input on this would be greatly appreciated...
I have replaced the slot loading CD/DVD drive in this machine twice just fine, so I do have some experience with the innards to draw upon.

I don't know about that... but your CRT iMac symptoms sound like a bad analog video board. This is the part that connects internally to the CRT. When you first start the iMac, the startup process checks the board. If it does not pass a test, the iMac shuts off (probably for safety reasons). Pushing the button again does nothing, until you unplug it, which resets the iMac to try again.
The same thing happened to my iMac. Is your iMac a slot-loader or a tray-loader?

G5 20" iMac Power Supply Issues Again!

Well, both of our old G5 iMacs have had the logic boards replaced under the extension repair program. Also one of of them had the PSU replaced as well under the same program. Well, now the other one has gone south. I pulled the power supply out and it had several bulging capacitors so I replaced them. However, I also noticed that there is a fried surface mount transistor right next to position R4 on the under side of the board. I've replaced the caps but I can't figure out the values of the fried transistor. I've taken some pics of it. I'm really hoping to track down the part and fix it myself. However, if not, might anyone have a replacement PSU for this 20" imac or know where I can get one inexpensively?
2nd question:
I went though the process of a service agreement on the Apple site. I entered the problems and got to the final page and it quoted me $74.95. However, I'm not sure what this charge is for. Do I ship the entire iMac in? or is this for a replacement PSU? I'd really like to make a trip to the Apple Store but we're stuck at home with a newborn for the next several days.
Anyway, any information would be great.

Hmm but you wouldn't have a service agreement on this machine. Call as DaddyPaycheck suggests.

Wow you must be pretty good to want to try to replace that SMT transistor! I'd be afraid that there would be other damage as well: diodes, power ics, switch mode chips etc. I've got 4 G5 supplies here and only one worked after the cap swap. I didn't feel trouble shooting the entire supply was worth the time.

I extract 2 12V leads from the hard drive power plug using a pin extractor like here:

If you look at the iMac G5 ALS pinout:

On the right you see that the difference in the first 20 pins is: Pin 12 -12 VDC and Pin 18 - 5VDC. So I extract those two pins clip them off. Shrink tube the ends and replace them w/ 2 yellow leads (+12VDC) that I extract from the hard drive leads. Once cleanly extracted they just push and lock in place.
Note that pins 11 (black, ground) and 22 (Brown + 24VDC) are not covered. If you have the early ALS you don't need these two leads (go figure) but if you have the later or 20" you need a separate supply for those leads. I use a old 24VDC PowerBook supply for that. Model M7783 it puts out 24VDC at 1.0A.
It's kind of messy but all the parts fit behind the iMac and aren't seen.
Also it seems like you're watching your pennies w/ the new baby. (been there)

Moving to Germany with my IMac- Power Cord issues

Hi,
Does anyone know how I can safely use my iMac G5 in Germany? I bought it in the U.S. but will be moving to Germany for 2 years. I would like to bring my computer with me but as far as I know, the line voltage of my computer cannot exceed the following:
 Line voltage: 100-120V AC
and Germany uses a 220 volt/50 hertz system. How should I deal with this? Can i just use a regular power converter?

These people will sell you one for $145 (the ALS PS also fits the "first generation" models), or replace it themselves for you for $195. (about the same price many Apple places charge for the part alone)
Expensive, I know, and you can get a 350 watt (about the size you need to relaibly run an iMac) "voltage converter" for significantly less, but if you go down the latter path make sure you get a good one.

IMac Power Up Issue

I had a weird problem this weekend. My Mac locked up after a Microsoft Word issue. After the forced quit I tried I turn on the Mac. I heard the CD make a noise but nothing else. The screen didn't come on and no noises from the Mac. I hit the power on button a few more times and nothing at all - not even the CD drive. I check all my connections and power cord and everything seemed ok. Hit the power button again and still nothing. I unplugged the Mac and moved the plug over to another outlet on my power strip. Hit the on button and everything came right up. At this point I don't know if I have a bad power outlet on the strip or if completely unplugging the unit caused it to start up. Anyone else have this issue?

All I did was turn off the Mac and changed to a different AC receptical on my power strip. Hasnt happened again. It could be the AC receptical but I dont have any way to confirm it. All I know is that it all working. You might be able to do the same but instead of unpluggng and using a AC port try to plug it into the same port and see what happens. Maybe unplugging the Mac from the power sourse reset something. Go figure.

Headless g4, ibook and intel imac (2.33ghz) issue

Ok so I have a small network hooked up through an ethernet switch. I have my iMac running ARD 3.2 and it works perfectly with my ibook both through ethernet and airport. When I plug my headless g4 quicksilver into the ethernet swtich I get nothing. Even using a fixed IP address and searching for it on ARD wont allow me to connect and control it. I've tried attaching a VGA cable and the VGA to mini DV adapter to my ibook and using that as the G4's "monitor" and nothing still. When i boot from the g4 disk on my ibook, I cant see any of the SATA drives hooked up to the SATA card inside and i am at a complete loss of what to do. I really need to be able to access those hard drives and do not have a monitor with which to set up the g4 tower. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That won't work. The video port on your iBook is output only, for using an external monitor with the iBook. You cannot use that port to use the iBook's screen with another computer.

I presume you mean via Firewire Target Disk Mode? If so, that won't work with drives connected to an any PCI card. Target Disk Mode on a G4 will only show the primary ATA hard drive connected to the motherboard's ATA bus.
As to ARD, I presume that you are certain that the ARD client on the G4 is active and appropriately set up? If so, I've read reports of difficulties observing and controlling some systems when they don't have a monitor connected, at least to get things set up and working. So it's quite possible that you'll need to borrow a monitor for the G4, at least temporarily, to get everything set up and working, particularly if you haven't or aren't certain you have set up the ARD client.

Should I get a 20" or a 24" Intel iMac (display quality issue)

Hello everybody,
next week I'm going to buy a new iMac.
I was about to purchase the 20" but with 2,4GHz and the bigger graphic card.
Because I do a lot of graphic and video work.
Now I read that a lot of people seem to have problems with their 20" screen.
There should be a faded upper left corner (because of the hot HD). And the colors are different depending how you move your head. The upper part is much brighter than the lower part, and so on...
Now my questions:
- Does this affect only the first iMacs produced, or are the iMacs in the stores right now still affected?
- Is the 20" with the bigger graphics card (same as the 24") has a better display behaviour?
- Are there happy designers out there with a 20" iMac?
- Or is a 24" the only solution for a graphci designer (I'm afraid it's to big for my table).
Any thoughts, suggestions, experiences are welcome,

Well, from a business standpoint I have just approved a final document which will add the Apple iMac 20" to our student-side standards list. What this means basically is that we've tested, extensively, the 20" iMac and found it's quality (as a whole) to be above and beyond what we normally receive from our other vendors.
One thing to keep in mind is that when you read the posts here things seem a lot worse than they are in the real world, this is because the Apple Discussion Forums are intended for support purposes so the majority of people posting here have a very specific problem. What isn't reflected here are those out there who have had no problems at all with the iMacs and are happy computing along and will for many years.
From a Graphic Design point of view I think you will be unhappy with both iMac models, sadly, due to the glossy screen which is more oriented towards consumers. You might give thought to a MacBook Pro with an external screen as an option as the specifications are virtually identical to that of the iMac, and it's portable!

Intel iMac power up automatically

Hello,
I have this problem since a few days. I shut down the computer normally and then, some minutes later, it automatic power on...
All the power options are disabled in System Preferences. The only change I have made to the computer is removing the bootcamp partition i created some months ago. I removed it with the bootcamp assistant so there shouldn't be a problem.
Any ideas? It's very annoying.

Intel iMac freezes, reboots and other issues

Intel iMac 17" 1.83 Ghz model (Had for a while now)
1 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM installed (Mac detects this fine)
Mac OS X 10.4.8
Beginning yesterday, the Mac froze when shutting World of Warcraft (which had been installed and working for at least two months). Computer completely hung. Restarted machine.
A few minutes later, the machine just switched itself off (or appeared to) - screen goes black. I held in power button for five seconds until I heard a click in the machine. This has happened repeatedly.
One time, the machine froze and the monitor refreshed at a visible rate (I could see the scan line) - each time the screen got darker.
Often, it will turn on, but the OS won't load unless I hold Alt down, or if I use OptionAlt+PR.
Ran disk utility from the install disk, only minor issues, all fixed. The problem of turning off still occurred.
Nothing in the kernel panic log. Diagnostics in System Profiler is saying it passes on the power on self test.
The confusing thing is, that after last night, I pulled the plug out, went to bed, praying to the computer fairy to fix it. This morning, it ran fine continuously for about 8 hours, running WoW, IRC app, iTunes etc. all fine.
Could it be a power supply issue? Is the thing overheating (the Mac is up to date with EFI Firmware update and SFC Firmware update).
I'm utterly stumped as to what's causing it. I don't want to send the thing off as then I'm without a computer.
Any ideas or advice?

Performance issue with brand new intel iMac extreme

I am at a loss to explain a problem I've been having and I thought I might put it out to you guys.
In September I purchased a macbook Pro (2.4 ghz, 4 GB RAM) to use in video editing with Final Cut Pro, and for the most part I've been thrilled. I use 1TB LaCie external drives connected via FW800, and perform Multiclip editing with 4-5 video streams at a time and only on occasion have dropped frames during the editing process.
In December I determined that I needed to have an additional system, and thought a 2.8Ghz Intel iMac extreme would be an excellent choice, since for the same price I could get a little more power in the processor, more hard drive space and a bigger screen to work on. When we picked up the new system in the store (The Grove Apple Store in LA), we had them upgrade the memory to 4GB.
Since day one we have had performance issues, including problems playing streaming and DVD video, severe delays mounting and unmounting drives (firewire and USB) and application images, and freezing while doing even simple tasks like printing or checking email. These problems occur even while there are no external drives are connected. I have none of these issues with the Macbook Pro, which has virtually an identical set of programs installed, and both running the same version of Leopard.
I already took the original iMac back to the store, and they exchanged it, but did not have 4GB sets of RAM in stock so they took the RAM from the original machine and put it in the new one. They said if I continued to have problems then it was most likely the RAM and I should come back when they got more in stock. I DID have the same problems with the new machine, and took it back to the Apple Store and they swapped the memory. It seemed to improve the issue, but now I'm seeing the same severe performance issues again.
All tech support can do is tell me to do a PRAM reset, which seems to improve things very temporarily (but that may be my imagination) or have me restart, which at least has the ability to make the printing of documents capable.
What I'm wondering is if it is likely that the RAM is the issue and I just got another bad batch, or if the iMac has some weird glitch that isn't present in the macbook Pro...?? Or could I have possibly gotten 2 bad systems in a row? It's extremely frustrating, and I KNOW it shouldn't be this way! It's so bad I get better performance out of my single-core G5 tower! How do I get a good working system that operates like it should? Am I better off getting another Macbook Pro? I'd rather not for several reasons...
I have xbench on both the MBP and the iMac and can provide test numbers if they'll help, as well as any other info.

I got the same problem with my MacBook when it still was new in may 2006. It was supposed to be one of the faster Laptops around but it was soooo slow it drove me nuts. I can only advise to have a look if there is something hugging up your RAM and run some tests using these programs on your machine:

If they show any unusual results you might have your problem...
As to my problem with the MacBook: I did a complete re-install (writing the harddisk over with zeroes) and suddenly everything was just fine. (But be sure to back all your files before that, I learned this one the hard way.) I know it is just a standard answer, but it worked out for me this time...

Imac power issue - randomly shuts down & won't turn on again

Just wondering if anybody could help us with this issue as the Apple Genius's failed to...
Our early 2006 Intel Imac has recently started to switch off at random times. There doesn't seem to be any particular point at which it will do this and no warning either. It's as if somebody has pulled the plug out but the power supply has not been touched! It then often won't allow you to switch it on again until you have left it over night - or sometimes it will switch on after a few minutes.
It is very frustrating as you never know when it might happen, it has been ok for a couple of weeks but now it has done it twice in the last two days.
We did take it to the Apple Store, who said they had kept it on for a day and could not replicate the issue so therefore there is nothing they can do...
If anybody can shed any light on this mystery it would be VERY much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the club of "random shut down".
Since 8 days I am also having this problem on an early 2006 2 GHz intel core duo with OS 10.4.11 After approx. 5-10 minutes it shuts down and the only way to wake up again is to disconnect the plug, wait 10 sec and connect it again and push the start button on the back.
There a many discussions ongoing and also many suggestions (SMC reset, memory replacement, change the power cord etc.). Nothing really worked in my situation. My assumption is something with overheating, but the widget "istatpro" or "tempmonitor" are showing not more than 35°C on the CPU at a max.
I found a little tool called "smcFanControl" to adjust the minimum speed of the fans (my settings: ODD 2850 rpm, HDD 3150 and the CPU fan at 2160 rpm) and since that adjustment the working period seems to be much longer. Sure, there is an annoying noise now, but I can use the imac again.
Hope that there will be a better solution soon.

Intel imac 24" seems to overheat top LH corner and goes to sleep

Intel iMac 24" - Since upgrading to Lion, my iMac keeps halting - particularly whilst playing back video - and goes into sleep mode.
The iMac is very hot in the top left hand corner so I assume that there is a thermal safety cut-out that is putting it to sleep ?
Tapping the keyboard a few seconds later staarts it up again but very soon heating issue causes it to go to sleep again.
I've never opended it up so I don't know what componenet is sitting in the top LH corner that is getting very hot - suspect its the graphics card.
anyone else had the same issue and know how it can be resolved ?

Your machine is working kind of hard, the first thing I'd try is doing both a SMC and PRAM resets, in fact doing 2 of each wouldn't hurt.
With only 493MB of free RAM you should upgrade. One thing you can check when you do this is to see if there is any dust that has accumulated on the intake port, this could be obstruction air flow. Do NOT blow are in but you can vacuum it out. I would recommend using www.macsales.com (OWC) and Crucial as vendors. I prefer OWC because they specialize in Macs so you know what they sell works, have terrific customer service and competitive pricing. BTW OWC has how-to videos that show how to install RAM.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

2007 Intel iMac with sleep/wake issues

I'm having difficulty troubleshooting this one and would greatly appreciate any advice/help. Basically this iMac will develop all kinds of problems over night. It will be put to sleep in the evening and in the morning it will be off or it won't wake from sleep. I don't think it's a power issue, as other computers aren't affected.
If you manually turn it off and then on again, it won't recognize the startup volume. Usually at this point nothing will work except Diskwarrior will find and repair some errors and it will work again for the rest of the day, but come morning, the problems return.
I've replaced the memory, changed all peripherals, completely rebuilt the OS (clean install), even replaced the battery backup unit. I've reset the PRAM and the SMC, ran surface scans on the hard drive, as well as all available tests in Tech Tool and Rember. Nothing found. SMART status is clear.
It seems to only happen over night. If I put it to sleep mid-day, it'll wake just fine, although perhaps there's a difference between that short sleep and its nightly slumber which is the key??
I don't think there's a software issue because the person who uses it basically only uses Mail, Safari, Firefox, and occasionally iWork apps. I'll put the latest crash report in a follow-up post, but I don't quite understand its contents and I'm hoping it will provide a clue which someone can help me with.

Transfer content from old power imac to new intel imac

What are the dos and do nots when transferring the content from my 6 year old power imac to a new intel imac top of the range?
