Intel iMac/Pro Book compatible Audio Interfaces?

Does anyone know if there are immediate plans for major audio interface manufacturers (MOTU, Edirol, M-Audio) to release drivers compatible with the new Intel Macs? Until that happens, no switch for me. I'm happy with my current machines, though, even though my iMac is now used to show how much speedier the Intel models are!

The American National Association of Music Merchants annual winter convention is January 19 through 22nd in Anaheim, California.
All of the major audio interface manufacturers will present their wares at this convention.
If they have not made announcements already, it is my guess that each company will announce their plans for Intel on Mac support by the end of this convention.
Non-Apple computer software developers will probably make similar announcements.
Watch http://www.harmony-central.com for press releases.
(I check Harmony Central each day to see what is new in the musical instrument and audio hardware fields).
My advice is this: the Mac on Intel iMac and MacBook Pro systems are going to start shipping over the next two months. Apple has announced that GarageBand 3 is already Intel-native, and that Logic will be Intel-native by the end of March (no word on Logic Express).
If you buy a new Intel on Mac system right now, it is a safe bet that some audio programs and audio hardware won't work natively right now.
But within a few months, every company should update their products.
Watch Harmony Central.com and read up on the news.

  • Al iMac + FW800 HDD + FW400 Audio Interface

    Hi All.
    I need some technical advice.
I understand that if I connect a FW800 + FW400 at the same time that the FW800 will drop to FW400 speed (and I'm fine with that) as they use the same bus.
My question is... will both ports operate as inidividual FW400 ports (ie sharing 800Mb/s or will they be sharing 400Mb/s like if you normally have 2 x FW400 on the same bus.
What I want to do is attach a RAID (mirrored) Hard drive setup (Taurus RAID II) to the FW800 and a Firewire Audio Interface (such as a MOTU) to the FW400.
Most of the audio interfaces I've looked at say that they need their own FW400 port (which I take as meaning not sharing the 400Mb/s bandwith with any other devices).
I do have several work arounds if this setup is going to cause problems (ie using a USB audio interface or a ADDA converter attached to the iMac's optical in/out... but this limits my choice of interface).
I really wish now that I had saved a little longer and got an entry level MacPro instead... but am very happy with my iMac (and man does it run quiet... my PC friends are all very jealous!!)
Thanks for any advice you can give.

    Thanks to you both.
Some people seem to think its been fixed, others seem to report they are still having problems... but its hard to tell whether its the audio interfaces they are using or an actual problem with the firewire bus.
I think i'm going to use an ADDA converter and the optical ins and outs anyway now... so I'll probably never know the answer to my question... but thanks for the replies.

  • Why distortion when output through computer out but not audio interface out?

    Equipment:
Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 digital audio interface
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 Mac Mini with 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Software:
    OS 10.8.2
    Mainstage 2.2.2 32 bit
I'm running a mic into my digital audio interface, which connects via Firewire to my computer.  The mic input is mapped to an audio channel strip.  When I attempt to run sound out using the stereo out on my computer, it works okay for about 10 seconds, but then starts progressively becoming more distorted.  At first, I thought it might be a bit rate issue, so I dropped it down very low.  This corrected it momentarily, but, again, after about 10 seconds, the distortion came back.  When I change the output to one of the audio outs on my digital audio interface though, it works fine.  However, I don't have the Y cable I'd need to take 2 of the mono audio outs on that device and merge them into a stereo out that I could plug into my computer speakers (that's all I've got right now), so I'm stuck with mono out.  Do you know why I'm getting this distortion on my computer's line out?  I don't have audio distortion problems if I'm watching Hulu or anything, and my Saffire drivers appear to be up-to-date and Focusrite says the device is supposed to be compatible with Mountain Lion.  Help is much appreciated!

  • Audio interface and software for my 13" MBA?

I just bought a new Macbook Air, the $999 13" model, and installed OSX Mavericks
I'm looking to purchase a compatible audio interface and recording/editing software to use with my XLR microphone.
Any pointers? I just don't want to spend $500 and get home and have it not work!

I'm quite impressed by Apogee Duet. 2-channel & no MIDI (still does provide some control function with its single knob) which sounds like it suits what you're looking for. Very simple & elegant design, the sound quality is supreme considering its cost.
Near field monitor of my choice is KRK V8's. Nice natural sounding set of monitors. In comparison to competitors at the price range, these sets 'breathe' & provide a bit more air in sound production without exaggerating any particular freq.
When it comes down to choosing monitor speakers, go to a local pro audio shop & try out a bunch so you can compare. Just remember to bring test CD that you know well what it should sound like.
    Good luck!

  • My 24" iMac won't read audio cds--ejects them after about 15 seconds

My 24" intel iMac won't read audio cds. It ejects them after about 15 seconds. I have virtually never played cds on this machine in five years. It plays dads with no problem. Anybody have any feedback. I also saw a fix by deleting some presence files.

I saw this on a forum from about four years ago:
    Trash the following folders:
    com.apple.kernelcaches (from System/Library/Caches
    extensions.kextcache (from System/Library
    CDInfo.cidb (from Home/Library/Preferences
    Restart
    Could this be a fix.
Unfortunately, I can't reset PRAM. I've done it a thousand times over twenty years, but my machine simply boots up without the extra chimes.

  • 10.4.7, Intel iMacs & MS Word

    Good morning.
At Berkley we have just migrated to a G5 Xserve with Tiger server and upgraded all our workstations.
The workstations are running Tiger 10.4.7 and are a mix of Intel iMacs, Mac books, eMacs and iBooks.
Among the applications is MS Office 2004 for Mac with service packs up to 10.2.4, and I’ve applied 10.2.5 to one of the Intel iMacs.
When the Intel iMacs are running MS Word, it unexpectedly quits just after a job is sent to a printer. It does not matter which printer, and it only happens on the Intel iMacs. The MacBooks and the Power PC machines are not affected. The iMacs have 512MB of RAM and are fine otherwise. Disk permission repairs do not make any difference, neither has the 10.2.5 service pack.
I’d appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

I'm confused about the update service pack. Office 2004 should be 11.2. I assume that's what you meant.
Was Office 2004 Test Drive uninstalled before installing the full version of Office. It is well known that installing the full version without uninstalling the Test Version will cause problems.
I'm also wondering if 512meg is enough ram to run it smoothly and not cause problems. Office has to run unde Rosetta on intel macs which may use more system resources. I run it on a mac mini with 1gig ram and hadn't had any problems with it. Also prints fine on several printers over my LAN.

  • R24 (Audio Interface) on LP9-Latency vs Distorted Input

    Hi All,
I just hooked up my R24 on Logic Pro 9 as Audio Interface & Surface Controller. No matter how I try to play around the I/O Buffer Size, sound just not right!
I/O Buffer Size from 32samples to 256samples - Sound (Guitar) is just perfect, BUT, It was high latency!
I/O Buffer Size from 512samples to 1024samples - Do not have Latency issue BUT sound was distorted (like low power)!
What's wrong with my setting? Thanks for your precious opinions, appreciate!

I agree about the Saffire. It is an amzing interface!
The other way that I used to get around latency is this...
1/ Direct monitor on the card. That is, set your USB/Input balance on the Mbox
2/ In logic record enable a track. Set up a send to a reverb bus, and set it to 'pre fader'
3/ Turn your fader right down to kill the direct signal.
You will have your system latency on your reverb but hey... it's reverb. If your latency isn't TOO big this should be acceptable.
But trust me, you'd get amazing results from the Saffire! The EQ and Compression strip on the inputs (optional) sound great. I loved mine, going to buy it back!

  • What audio interfaces are compatible with the iMac/Intel computer?

I see that MOTU has Intel-compatible drivers for its high-end audio interfaces. Are there any other audio interfaces--USB or Firewire--that are at present compatible with the Intel Duo Core machines that are under $300? I've checked with Tascam and Presonus, and theirs are not yet compatible. I have an inquiry in to M-Audio, but haven't heard back yet.
PS: Does anyone else think it is just a teensy bit dishonest of Apple to be selling audio interfaces in its online store without pointing out explicitly that they don't work on the Intel machines?

Well, it looks like M-Audio's Firewire Solo has a beta driver available for the Duo Core. Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. And it's well under $200 at a couple online stores.

  • Audio Interface with Seamless IMac Compatiblity?

    Dear List,
I thought I submitted this question before but I couldn't find it in my stuff, and can't find exactly the same question in here by searching so here goes and sorry if it's repetitive.
I currently use an M-Audio, Fastrack Ultra as my interface, and it causes my IMac to kernel crash fairly frequently, despite the fact that I'm using all their suggested work arounds.  I just looked on their website, and there's no new driver updates, as they have been working on trying to fix that issue.  Thus, I'm going to give up on it and I want an audio interface that works seamlessly with IMacs.   I would like to stay in the 400-600 dollar range.
The tech specs for my IMac and Logic Studio are below:
    IMac 21.5inch Mid 2011
Processor:  2.7 GHz, Intel Core I5
    Memory: 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
Software:  Mac OS X Lion, Version 10.7.4 (11E53)
    VERSION OF LOGIC PRO
    9.1.7 (1700.57) 32 bit
    Thanks in advance
    Joyce

If you can stretch your budget (quite a bit actually, but you can find deals on the net) I can't recommend the RME Fireface 800 models enough. Lots of I/O, never EVER had a crash, and the drivers and tools are rock solid. RME also makes a FF400 which has less I/O, but also costs less. The sound is steller, and it has no discernable noise. These are Firewire interfaces, but they just camme out with one that also talks USB.

  • Audio Interface (Presonus) on Intel iMac - Control software not visible

I'm trying to use core audio compatible Presonus Inspire 1394 firewire audio interface on my new Intel iMac. My main problem is the only controls for the interface are onscreen, but software for said control panel doesn't visibly open. The icon for the device oscillates side-to-side in my dock, and trying to move the inspire file from the desktop reveals that "the app is open." However, I can not see the control panel or any other evidence the file is open. With the help of Presonus tech, I've discovered a couple of things:
    1. The device syncs with my iMac, as evidenced by its presence in the Audio Midi Setup panel, plus
    2. Play back of a song in iTunes goes through the interface's headphone jack just fine.
My install procedure has revealed two things, also:
When I put the software disk in, open the Inspire control panel file, then the control panel is visible. However, when I then plug in the firewire device, I get an eternally revolving beachball and eventually have to force quit (new to mac, but I figure that is my only option at that point.)
However, if I plug in the firewire first, then try to open the control panel file, I get the open-but-not-visibly-so problem I first mentioned (appears in dock, etc.).
Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone experienced a newly loaded app appearing in the dock but not visibly open?
I've tried restarting mac, reinstalling sw and device, downloading said software from the Personus web site (vs the disc supplied version), and both repairing and verifying HD permissions. I am at a loss. Presonus said the device is plug-and-play with core audio. a check reveals the device is PowerPC, but they said it should run on intel mac too, based on their assurances from apple personnel and other stuff I didn't understand (it is an OS X issue, not platform...or something).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

They will, but I have no ETA.

  • Recommendations for intel compatible midi and audio interfaces?

Right now I'm looking for recommendations on a small and cheap midi interface that already has Universal drivers.
Also, what audio interfaces are people using with intel macs? Who has drivers ready besides MOTU?

I've got an m-audio firewire 410, which is supposed to be a compatable interface, but the midi doesn't seem to work at all and the headphone cue only works when you monitor the aux sends.
-Know that even if you get one of the compatible interfaces, you may have to wait for a driver update before it functions at 100%.

  • Apple Pro Audio Speakers on Intel iMac

    Hello everyone!
My new Intel iMac just got opened and is sitting on the desk, but I ran into one issue: The Apple Pro Audio speakers that came with the iMac G4 can not be hooked up. Is there an adaptor I can get, or will I have to make due with the internal speakers for a little bit ? (which by the way, sound really good)

If you're taking speaker recommendations, I love my JBL Creature II speakers. They also come in aluminum, black, and red.
They look a little funky, which is cool, and they sound great!
