Intel iMac RAM install problems

Hello,
I have recently purchased a new 17" intel iMac with the standard 512MB memory. Looking to add more RAM, I bought a third party 512MB chip and put it into my computer. It worked fine for as long as I had it on. After I shut it down and booted the next day, my iMac did not recognize the new RAM. I took the RAM out and put it back in and it worked until i shut it down again. Since then, I have had to take the door off for the computer to see the RAM. Anyway, my question is has anyone else had this problem, and is there a solution, other than buy expensive Apple RAM.
iMac intel Core Duo 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

What brand RAM is it and who did you buy it from?
There is no such thing as "Apple RAM" as Apple gets it from a variety of sources. I use Patriot RAM in both my first gen G5 iMac and my BlackBook with no problems at all. Others have used Crucial, G.SKILL, Mushkin, Corsair, Samsung, OWC as well as a ton of others with similar success.

  • Does intel iMac ram have to be "matched" pairs?

    Hi,
I jsut got a 17" intel imac core duo and i have a 1gb memory module to go alongside the installed 512mb, my question is can i do this (1.5gb in total) or does it have to be 1gb x 2 or 512mb x2 as in the dual powermacs etc?

As others have stated, you would never notice the difference between matched 512s and the combination of 512MB and 1GB sticks. What you will notice is that your Mac will be able to run more apps at the same time, have more windows open, and run non-Intel native apps faster due to Rosetta's love of RAM.
Plus, you would have maxxed out one slot. If you add a single 512MB stick to what you already have, then the next time you go to upgrade - to get an upgrade worth doing - you will have to take that out and add RAM. If one slot is already at its maximum, then you will only have to replace the original 512MB stick.

  • Cannot boot my Intel iMac after installing Snow Leopard on an external USB

I have an Intel iMac with Snow Leopard installed. I have several FW and USB external drives. When I installed Snow Leopard from the Apple install disc on one of the USB drives to act as a backup the system rebooted and the Apple logo appeared and then the spinning gear wheel. After a while the logo was replaced by a circle with a line through it. I booted back into the install disc and tried Startup Disc from Utilities and selected Macintosh HD with the same result. Then I restored the system on my internal drive (Macintosh HD) from Time Machine. Still no luck. Does any one have any ideas before I reformat and reinstall from the SL installer disc?

Thanks for the replies. I was under the impression that Intel Macs can be booted with a USB drive
I just learned today that this is true from one of our Level 4's. PPC macs can't boot on USB drives and I thought that carried over to Intel, but I was wrong.
    Didn't mean to misinform you!
Ultimately, I reformatted my internal drive, reinstalled the OS and did a restore from my latest Time Machine backup with Migration Assistant. I didn't lose any data but the restore process took 3+ hours.
    Great! Glad you had success!

  • Intel iMac airport connection problems

    Hello,
My new intel iMac connected up to my 802.11g 3come wireless modem/router fine, the strength in excellent (always full or nearly full) but the connection is very very intermittent.
It will only work for a minute or so but then the internet will go down on the machine for about 30 seconds, then come back on.
The network file sharing also goes down. Other Windows PCs on the network do not have this problem.
I have tried the following, none has had any effect:
[*]Turning off all other network PCs
[*]Disabling all encryption on the router
    [*]Using different browsers
[*]Calling Apple support - first they asked me to adjust some networking options, we also setup a new network connection. They then sent me a replacement iMac - it's exactly the same
The firmware is up-to-date on the router.
I am aware there are similar posts in the forum, but other people's problems seem to be to do with their speed. None of the solutions have helped.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your support.
    Davood

I wasted hours and hours trying to figure out a similar problem with my machine. Apple Support denied all knowledge of known issues, but then I came across a discussion titled "Will Apple react to the Airport problem with the new iMac (Intel C2D)?" - you will find it on the 5th page (at the moment) of these topics.
It is one of the largest threads I have seen in these forums (113 replies). I tried to add an update, but curiously the thread is now locked - Apple are obviously keen to censor further discussion on the subject.
Apple do now acknowledge that there is a problem with Airport and the Intel-based Macs. They are supposedly working on a fix, but when that will come is not clear.
I would urge everyone with Airport issues to pester Apple Support until they solve this problem.

  • IMac RAM upgrade - Problem with PC2-6400S-666?

    Hi, everyone -
I updgraded my iMac5,1 (according to specs found here) to 3GB RAM. Ordered the modules from Other World Computing. After installing the RAM (and reseating it numerous times) I received repeated kernel panics. (The Mac would "see" the memory as 3GB, and would run fine for a few hours, then kernel panic.)g
I have isolated the problem to the 1GB module that OWC sent me: If I replace the OEM memory that came with the Mac, it runs fine. If I run it with just the 2GB module from OWC, it runs fine. Whenever I install the 1GB module, I run into trouble.
During this process, I noticed that OWC had shipped me a 2GB module (OWC-branded, PC5300 DDR2 667MHz 200 Pin, which matches the Apple-recommended spec), but the 1GB module is (Samsung) 2Rx16 PC2-6400S-666-12-A3.
OWC is trying to tell me that this Samsung module - which they substituted because they were apparently out of stock on the 1GB OWC PC5300 modules like I ordered - has firmware that will enable it to work with my machine, but obviously for whatever reason it does not. Perhaps it is simply defective, but I am trying to get them to send me a 1GB module that matches the 2GB module (OWC, PC5300, etc) just because I am more comfortable having the modules be the same spec. (Plus, that's what I ordered; a 3GB kit that was supposed to include all one type of memory.)
Has anyone experienced problems running PC2-6400S memory in their iMac? And do you think I am being reasonable to try and insist that they send me a 1GB module that is exactly the same type as the 2GB module? (Doesn't that theoretically minimize potential problems?)
I have usually had pretty good experiences with OWC, but this has been frustrating (they have also been slow in responding to me, which is disappointing.)
Thank you for any advice or insights!
    Christina

I would absolutely insist that they exchange the incorrect stick and ship what you ordered. They are usually very good, but maybe you just got a rep who was not in the best mood? In any case, at this point, having a trail in writing would be good, so send them an email and politely but firmly insist on the correct module.

  • RAM installing problems!

    hi everyone,
i just got my new imac and i´m trying to install the extra 1GB into it. whatever i do: it just doesn´t go all the way in! i´ve started off trying really carefully not to break anything. then i apllied more and more force and still nothing. i double checked with the seller that it´s definitely the right RAM. they told me that in fact on the new imac you have to be quite brutal to fit it in. but there´s only so much force you can apply to a highly sensitive chip, isn´t there?! the other strange thing is: the other RAM is stuck! i cant get it out no matter what i do! has anyone had the same problem?
    thanks,
    j*

It took me two tries to install my 1 gig memory chip from Crucial. The first time, I didn't press hard enough. I was afraid that I would damage the chip. Anyway, when I rebooted the iMac, I got the dreaded "3 tones every 5 seconds." I had to remove the memory cover, remove the chip, and reinstall it.
The "Everything Mac" booklet's instructions on inserting new RAM said that you would hear a "slight click" when the memory was seated. That was NOT my experience--I heard a quite noticeable click on my second attempt. (On my first attempt, I'd imagined a slight click.)
I inserted the chip straight in, with no downward pressure. I pushed it in with two thumbs, one one each side of the chip, increasing pressure until I heard the noticeable click.
    Hope this helps.

  • White 20 inch intel mac osx install problem

I'm trying to reinstall OSX Lion onto an older, 2.16 GHZ, 20 inch intel Mac. I had to reinitialize the hard drive before the install. When I try to perform the install it tells me that "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer.  The disk was reinitialized using Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I have noticed, however, that when I select the hardrive (not the partition) in Disk Utility that the Volume Format is MS-DOS (FAT).
Any suggestions or workarounds would be appreciated.

The partition should be GUID and the Hard Drive should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    BTW it's an iMac.

    hi guys, ive a new 2010 mac pro 5,1 8 core [2x 2.4 ghz ] 12gb
    My ram is as follows, 2 x 4gb modules +4 x 1 gb modules [DDR3 ECC 1066mghz]
    and all slots are full.
TodayI just purchased two 8gb modules, and now no matter what order of slots i put them in, I can only register the 2 x 8gb chips 16gb of memmory that I juts put in, even if the other slots have 4gb ram modules in them, they dont show up in sysytem, prefs[thats after many flashing power light issues and changing slots] they show up as empty dimm slots in system prefes???
have I exceeded my maximum ram with this machine it is now 2 x 8gb chips = 16gb ????
or do I have to buy 2x 8gb modules to replace my
2 x 4gb modules which are instaled but not now not showing up ??
If i take the new 16gb chis out, and replace all lsots with my old memmory i get 12 gb no no probs, i just cant seem to get past 16???
any help at all would be appreciated troops
    many thanks in advance

    Hi amoeba23,
I know its too late now, but in your position I would have imported 8GB RAM modules from OWC rather than buy them from Crucial.
Otherwise, I would have waited until Kingston started selling 8GB System Specific RAM modules for 2009/2010 Mac Pros instead.
To the best of my knowledge there is nothing on either the Crucial USA or Crucial UK websites stating that their modules incorporate Apple Specified Thermal Sensors, which probably means that they do not have them, and I would have avoided them for that reason alone.
In contrast the OWC website states that their modules confirm with Apple's specifications in that respect:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory#1333-memory
Also, there was no benefit in buying 1333MHz modules from Crucial, instead of 1066MHz ones from OWC, because of the limitations of the memory bus speed of your Mac Pro model.
For anything smaller than 8GB RAM modules I always advise UK enquirers to buy Kingston System Specific memory for 2009/2010 Mac Pros, because their modules are manufactured to Apple specifications, including thermal sensors. Personally, I use nothing but Kingston RAM, which has been 100% trouble-free for me, and because I know that their System Specific range of memory has been thoroughly tested for compatibility before being released for sale. Plus there are numerous resellers of Kingston System Specific RAM in the UK.
In addition, and very recently, there were several reports of problems with Crucial's 4GB RAM modules in 2009 Mac Pros, and Crucial UK admitted that they were not compatible, and had to issue refunds.
That is another reason that I would have steered clear of their 8GB modules.
Unfortunately, Kingston do not yet market System Specific 8GB RAM modules for Mac Pros. Quite probably this is because Apple do not sell them, and have not yet officially approved this capacity for use in their Mac Pros. I say this because Kingston did not start selling 4GB RAM modules for 2009 Mac Pros until around about the same time that Apple did.
    Regards,
    Bill

  • Intel iMac RAM: Different from normal 200-Pin SO-DIMM PC2 5300?

    I've got two questions here:
    1. According to this KB doc, "mid-2006" iMac memory should be upgraded in pairs "for best performance." That much I get; however, it also says that "The iMac (Mid 2006) ships from the factory with at least 512 MB of DDR2 SDRAM, in two 256 MB DIMMs; one in each of the memory slots." But according to the Apple Store, current iMacs still ship with one stick. We are in mid-2006, aren't we? So is the article wrong, or the spec page? My brother just ordered a 17" iMac, and we need to know what the RAM makeup really is before ordering more.
    2. While researching RAM upgrades for that machine, I found that NewEgg has two identical-spec Kingston RAM modules that are $30 different in price: Kingston 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory - $88.99 vs. Kingston 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory - $119.99. They've got identical specs, except the more expensive one specifically states Apple compatibility, and is the one recommended for the iMac on the Kingston site. (However, it recommends it for "early 2006" iMacs, and doesn't have a "mid-2006" recommendation, which gives me pause.)
So I'm curious about the price difference -- shouldn't either one work fine in the iMac? -- and the inconsistency between the KB doc and the spec page. Does anyone who very recently ordered a 17" iMac know if it shipped with 1/512MB module or 2/256 modules?
    Thanks, all.

The mid-2006 iMac refers to the education only iMac released in mid-2006, not as far as I can tell the one that was released in January which is the current spec'ed one. The education iMac has very different specs as you can see here:
    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2006/jul/05imac.html
Being you are in France go to http://www.crucial.com/ or http://www.macsales.com/ where they will make sure you get RAM for the right model.

  • Intel iMac 24 display problem with colours

    Hi,
Tonight for no apparent reason my imac screen has gone weird. The colours are reversed with black becoming white and vice versa.
    Restart - no change
Display resolution - changed but made no effect
Ran CD hardware diagnostic to no avail
Weird thing - when I boot up in Windows its fine.
When I log in with another account name its fine
    Please help

    Beatsuite.com:
Check Universal Access in System Preferences and see if white on black is checked instead of black on white under Display. If not that then I don't know.

  • IMAC 2009 INSTALL PROBLEMS

io have downloas the ARMA 2 demo, how do i install it, it just comes up in text ????????????????

Well, you could install Boot Camp, then get a copy of Windows and install it then boot into windows on your Mac and then run it. The game does not run natively on the Mac OS, but if you install Windows on your Mac, then you will have the game running on Mac hardware, but Windows software.
That is about the only way you are going to run the game on your Mac.

  • Apple aware of video problem in the new Intel iMacs

    Macworld Daily News
    Thursday - February 09, 2006
Apple investigates Intel iMac Front Row problems
    By Macworld staff
Apple has confirmed it is aware of, and investigating, reports of video problems in the new Intel iMacs.
Recent reports claimed that some users had experienced random horizontal lines and other video playback problems when playing video in Front Row.
"Apple is aware of this issue and is looking into it," the company said in an email to a web-based pressure group that has been gathering information on the problem. "If a customer has any technical issues, they should contact AppleCare."
    The problem is allegedly software-based.

"Sure, I'd be more understanding had it been an issue that required a very special set of conditions to trigger"
Apparently it does as this issue is not affecting all users.
"As I was told, affected owners would not be proactively notified"
Where you you prefer them to use their limited resources, trying to figure out who MAY be affected and sending them some sort of detailed action plan, or spending the resources determining the cause of the issue and developing a solution that can be distributed to the ones who need it not only now, but those that may discover the issue next week?
I can understand that you are frustrated, and don't blame you for feeling that way, but this is an all new piece of technology and bugs are going to come up that were missed in testing. No company can afford to test at a 100% level. To do so would drive the costs so high as to make it impossible to sell the product, especially to the market the iMac is aimed at. Apple has a pretty darned good track record of resolving issues quickly when they appear. Until they do you only have a few choices. Use the workaround until the solution appears, waste time complaining about it, or sell the iMac and purchase a different product. That's really about all you can do!
It was good of you to spend your valuable time, and yes it is valuable, trying to help the engineers or service reps solve the issue. That they spent that much time with you should show their commitment to solving this issue.
Be patient, give them a chance, they have not had long to try and figure this out.

  • Intel iMac sleep problem, need help !

My 17" Intel iMac has sleep problem past few days.
I use the Ctrl+Eject on the keyboard to put my iMac to sleep and it only needs 3 to 5 sec before.
But now I use same method, it got 30 sec. to sleep; same result thru Apple menu>sleep.
Used Onyx & repair permissions, still no change.
Anyone know what's the problem, how to fix it?
    Plz help!
    Thx!

    Danlam,
A simple SMC (System Management Controller) reset is known to resolve a lot of sleep/wake related issues.
Here's how to do the reset:
    - From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
    - Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    - Wait at least 15 seconds.
    - Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
    - Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
Follow this link to the Apple Article that describes the SMC and how to reset it in more detail: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
    Hope this helps you out.
