Intel iMac Randomly restarts, and delayed boot-ups when powered on from off
First, bought the iPod (20gig w/ photo display). Love it. Still use it. Never a problem.
Then bought a MacBook in '06. Love it. Only a few problems along the way but easily fixed.
So, based on that, bought the 20" aluminum intel-iMac (2.4GHz, 2GB memory, 320HD)in October. Loved it. Never a problem. Not one. Until...
...I installed Leopard. What a headache. I've solved all of the problems with help from the forum etc. except one:
iMac waits 3-20 minutes before it feels like "waking up" after I've powered it on, and when it does finally boot-up into OS it restarts upon a whim, sometimes after half an hour or so and sometimes after just a few minutes. Problem.
After searching the discussions and reading through the posts I can't find a solution.
Any suggestions?
(There's nothing external connected to iMac except the keyboard. There are no 3rd party upgrades. All updates successfully downloaded. And I've unplugged the power cord several times. It is the only way to get the iMac to power on and, eventually, boot up again.)
Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, Dennis.
I was able to try the SMC instructions and use Disk Utility before posting my question. It didn't help.
Since posting my question I talked to the Apple guys where we purchased our iMac and after discussing the problems they're quite certain it is a hard drive problem. I take it in tomorrow.
The problem with my post is that I left out the most glaring symptom (good thing I am not a doctor).
My Mac's start-up disk is not named "Macintosh HD". It was. Now it is named ""?????????. So, even though both "Repair Disk" and "Apple Hardware Test" came up just fine, no problems, there is something wrong with my Startup Disk. I had hoped upgrading to Leopard using the "erase and install" method would fix the problem. It didn't. And I just now brought the iMac to its original "Tiger" state and the startup Disk is still called ""?????????. The Apple guys say HD problem. They'll figure it out for certain on Monday.
Thank goodness for back-up hard drives.
Thanks again Dennis for your input.

My imac randomly restarts and then takes 45 minutes to load. What can I do to fix it?
I upgraded to Mavericks as soon as it released a few weeks ago. This is the only change I've made, no new programs or apps otherwise. Last week my imac randomly restarted and then took 45 minutes to load. It's done this about 5 times in the last week. I need some help resolving this.
I've gone through the disk utility to repair/verify the hard drive, and it's done nothing to solve this issue.
I do have a time machine and am wondering if it would be too drastic to reformat and restore from the time machine.
Any help would be appreciated! I have work to do!

Ipod Touch 5 random restart and wifi connectivity issues
Good day to you sir...
My Ipod Touch 5G 32gb model white has issues towards random restart and wifi unstable even though I have full bars and a working wifi internet connectivity
Here are details that might help on my case..
I bought the Itouch 5 on singapore exactly around January 2013 registered on January 1 on Apple web for warranty.
Around early Feb, i experienced some random restart and I tought it was just some bug after update, it was gone and came back around late march with some wifi issues, but not regularly, only around certain cases on using it for a long period of time. I am still experiencing it now.
The device never experienced drops, dents, nor water damage.. it is protected by an Ozaki case and screen protector bought in a Mac store. Never been Jailbraked. I used it for music, videos and gaming purpose. I have 3 idevice other than the Itouch (iPad 2, Ipad w/ retina display and Ipad Mini with no occuring problems both updated to ios 6.1.3 (so is the itouch). I would like to know what course of action should I take about this problem. I have restored the Ipod Touch 5G via iTunes but the problem still occuring both wifi and random restart. I bought the device on a legit mac authorized dealer. (Power Mac i think) in Singapore, but I live in General Santos City, Philippines. I would gretly appreciate if you give me exact details what course of action should i take.
P.S. my Ipod Touch 5 is running on iOS 6.1.3..If you restored to factory settings/new iPod and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

IMac with bootcamp and parallel boots into windows 7 but won't boot intoxc lion.
IMac with bootcamp and parallel boots into windows 7 but won't boot into Mac OS lion?
Hi,
Thanks for your suggestion. Actually that was not the problem, because I had the Mcintosh drive set as my boot drive. The answer was that my Lion Os got somehow corrupted and I had to reinstalll Lion. This was all after I discussed the situation with the Apple Support people. -
I migrated my old IMac to new and Aperture won't let me import from camera
I migrated old iMac to new and Aperture will not let me import from camera from. Migrating created two users and I get an error message saying I do not have permission write. I have gone to get info and it says I have read and write permissions.
iMac 10.7.5 Aperture 3.4.5nopriors wrote:
I used migration Assistant
That's the problem. Apple doesn't make it clear that you should transfer when the new Mac starts up, not later on with Migration Assistant.
which told me to enter a new name . I had the new computer and old with same name. I called the new user my name with word "old" so not the same name as old Mac.
The problem isn't the names, it's the (mostly hidden) User ID number (UID). See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation of what happened.
Your best bet is to use one of the workarounds (probably #4) in the green box there, to re-transfer your account. It will have exactly the same name and permissions as before.
If you want to change the name, you can, but it takes a minor finagle. Post back if you want to do that. -
my ipod 5th gen crashed unexpectedly while i was using my facebook app and then i turned it off thinking it would restart and be alright but when i turned it on like ***?! some of the applications were gone and the setting and appstore and photos and camera are gone like everything that is on it already .. please help me
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Intel imac display glitch and involuntary restart
Just want to know if anyone else has experienced this specific problem, there are plenty of complaints about intel imac displays but I can't be bothered to sift through them all trying to find a match for my problem.
A couple of months ago I was watching a video in quicktime and noticed that my screen was glitching and flashing fragmented diagonal lines - like a commodore 64 loading type thing. Then the spinning-ball came up and a force quit didn't do anything so I had to force shut down. I started up and it occured again. Then the screen went blank/black, but still lit up, and restarted without me doing anything. It also got stuck during start up the second time this occured. I panicked and ran out to buy a 500GB external drive, backed up all of my work and then re-installed mac osx from disk, archive and install job. This seemed to sort it and for the following two months it seemed OK. No sign of any problems.
Since then I have updated from 10.4.7 to 10.4.10 (which I have suspicion that it screwed the firmware in my motu 828 firewire audio interface, costing me a £130 repair - but that's another painful story).
It happened again tonight (the screen thing, not the motu). And the ball came up and I couldn't do anything. Force shut down, restart - screen glitching again. Then I had 2 unexpected restarts, one getting stuck in startup. Then a successful startup but accompanied by the glitchy graphics, mainly red/pink pixellated diagonal lines flickering in and out. I ran a disk first aid - no problems. Did a disk permission repair. Shut down and ran a hardware test, the first few minutes of the test the screen was still at it but then stopped glitching, hardware test found no errors (it was an extended test too). Now I'm back on it and it's all OK.
Any suggestions/similar stories?
When it occured 2 months ago I had the original ram that came with the imac. Now I have 2x1GB sticks of crucial ram. That's it! Well, that's what I have. Unfortunately, I don't know about the cause, but I don't ever recall having it prior to an update going back about a year ago. I recall an update, and that update being immediately followed by some sort of Apple Graphics something-or-other. I feel pretty certain that's when I first noticed this. I just had my LCD replaced for another reason, but I think you'll agree, it's not an LCD issue. In my case, browser activity, scrolling up or down in a page, seems to be the most common trigger. I've also seen "pieces" of the torn page, on the screen when minimizing the browser to the dock (usually Firefox, but I think I've seen it with Opera and Safari too). Is there a way to find update packages installed somewhere? I'd know it if I saw it, and I'd definitely try removing that suspect package/update.

Intel iMac Spontaneously Restarting
The iMac has now done this easily >10 times over the last 2 1/2 days. Most cases I have been doing something (no common demoninator I could find in my activities), then it restarted by itself when I was away frorm the Mac. It has spontaneously restarted when only Apple apps are running, and once (the 2nd or 3rd time overall) it actually restarted during it's boot-up process.
While looking at the grey screen with the spinning progress-stick, it restarted again once.
The spontaneous restarts all look the same: the screen immediately turns black, and all activity stops - Instantly - then the front light illuminates, the chime sounds, and restart commences. There is no app-closing, or normal-delay associated with the shut-down portion of restart.
Anyone else? Any ideas?Well, I bought my 20" iMac Intel w/ 2GB of RAM and received it last night. It couldn't last 24 hours. A few hours ago, I experienced the same problem as you viper.
When I was using the computer, the iMac suddently started to fade out into a "grey" screen. It immediatly told me I must restart the computer by holding down the power supply button. Once I turned it back on, it wouldn't boot up properly. I would hear the apple "chime," see the Apple logo for a second, and than the screen would turn black and restart again, and again, and again...
I just got off the phone with Apple. I spoke to a tech and a specialist. They determined it's a dead unit, it needs to be replaced.
I'm in shock. I've had a Mac Mini for over a year now (purchased in Feb 05). My Mac Mini works great. I thought the new iMac's with the intel chips was another great advancement. Making applications universal is a wonderful idea. However, my iMac wouldn't last me 24 hours.
Should I even bother getting a replacement?
Mac Mini 1.42Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.5) Purchased the new iMac, couldn't last 24hrs.

Intel iMac randomly relaunching Finder. RAM problem?
Several months ago I bought a new 3.06 GHz Intel iMac with 2GB of RAM. I also bought CS4 so I maxed out my RAM at 4GB with a 2x2GB RAM kit from Other World Computing.
I've noticed in the lately that everything will suddenly hang, the Dock won't appear when I cursor to the bottom, and then my desktop pic will change. I have my prefs set to choose a random one each day but this isn't happening at the right time, it's random. Not only that but if I open Dashboard after that it has to reload all of my widgets again. Plus any docked Finder or app windows pop back out to the desktop. It's like the Finder is being relaunched or something.
I'm wondering if this could be an issue with bad RAM or not having enough. With email, browser, FTP, time logger, and a few smaller apps going I can never really have more than a couple of the CS4 apps open without things getting sluggish. I try to avoid having more than 2 open at any one time. I've even dropped Photoshop's RAM usage settings from 70% to 60% to see if it makes any difference.
The problem is still happening and it seems to be happening more frequently. Things just relaunched and I went into Mail to minimize an email window. As soon as I clicked the yellow button things hanged again but not in the same way. No windows would minimize, the Dock wouldn't appear and I couldn't switch Spaces. When I went to restart, as soon as my cursor rolled over the Dock item in the Apple menu it stalled there for a short time before I was able to go down to restart. Then the restart sequence stalled and I had to force a shut down.
This is really frustrating as I was expecting a great new machine and software to replace my aging PowerMac G4 and older apps. Is there a way to test for bad RAM or does this sound like a known issue with CS4 or iMacs in general? I don't have the original 2x1GB RAM sticks any more, I sold them after installing my new RAM.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.I've been trying a few things here and there when I've had time, giving time in between to see if the problem reoccurs. So far I've done the following:
1. Repaired Permissions. No effect.
2. Used Onyx to clean the System, User and Font cache options listed by default. It also told me that S.M.A.R.T., startup volume, Permissions and Prefs are all ok. No effect.
3. I removed the RAM, inspected the boards and the slots. Can't see any sort of damage to either. I replaced the boards but swapped slots. Both boards are firmly seated. Also no effect.
I'm going to try running 1 board at a time, swapping slots if the problem continues. If it does I'll try creating a 2nd admin account and go from there.
I've also noticed at times when the hang happens it seems to be when I click on an item in my Dock (usually a folder of items). There have also been times that after it happens I'll switch to another space and the windows for different apps will have disappeared. The apps are still open but if I try choosing the missing window under View or Window they still won't appear. Same goes with trying to use Show All under the Finder menu. -
Help me troubleshoot my iMac | random SPOD and freezes
ok, I am 1 step away from literally throwing this iMac out the window, but maybe someone has got an advice before I do so.
In the beginning of 2009, my iMac's harddrive went bad.
I was able to rescue everything via target mode so no big deal. I went and bought a new harddrive for it and replaced it myself. I found a very good guide for the whole procedure and after that I installed a fresh copy of OSX 10.4 on it.
Since then the system would start to do random freezes, sometimes for all running applications, and sometimes for just one or two simultaneously.
The freezes normally lasts between 10 seconds to 4 minutes and I have so far (1 year later) not been able to discover any kind of logic/pattern in these freezes.
Sometimes I can run a plethora of programs at the same time (iMovie, Photoshop, Quicktime, Safari, Pages etc) and everything goes fine for hours. Some times it will take me minutes to just launch Safari or Textmate.
Now, it isn't as though I haven't tried doing anything about it, it just that so far nothing have worked out.
Here is a list of things I have tried since it started in 2009
- Running Repair Permissions (Disk Utility or holding down SHIFT when booting)
- Running maintenance programs like Onyx, MacJanitor, Maintenance, iTools
- Fixing font issues using FontBook, LinoType and FontNuke
- Replacing/Upgrading RAM (I went from 1gb to 3gb)
- Testing RAM with memtest
- Running Disk Warrior
- Disabling various processes/services (spotlight/mds etc.)
- Uninstalling/upgrading/downgrading programs (mostly programs that I use alot like Firefox and Safari)
- Upgrading the OS (first to Leopard, and then to Snow Leopard)
- Re-installing OS X (I have tried different combinations like re-installing to Tiger, then upgrading to Leopard and SL, re-installing to Leopard without upgrading etc.)
There might be more but I really cannot remember.
Of course my focus has been mainly on the harddrive itself since this was the piece that got replaced, but everytime I run Disk Warrior or Onyx or any other diagnostics app I have come across, I am told that the harddrive is doing fine.
In the middle of 2009 I then created a 50gb partition on which I installed Win XP. This was because of some work related software that I needed to run. Now, on Win XP I have yet to experience any problems relating to the one I have on OSX. (Of course there are problems with Win XP, but none of them were relating to my specific issue here).
So as it is right now, and have been for too long, I'm better off running Win XP than I am running SL, and that just ****** me off..!
Does anyone here have an idea about what to do next?
I have thought about buying a new harddrive to replace the initial replacement drive, but if that is the only choice I have left, I would rather save up for a new iMac instead.
I have already spent more than enough trying to fix this one.
Here are some details about the system:
Model-id: iMac5,1
Processor name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor speed: 2.16 GHz
Processors: 1
Cores: 2
L2-buffer: 4 MB
Memory: 3 GB
Bus speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM-version: IM51.0090.B09
SMC Version: 1.9f4
OS Version: 10.6.2
Some of these are roughly translated by me from Danish.
Thanks to the people still reading this.
.cbHi Kguy,
Thank you for the reply.
The freezes happens when opening programs and when running them. And it happens with (as far as I know) all programs on the computer (including TimeMachine, Dashboard apps, Finder, login in/logging out etc.)
As far as I know this is not related to my network, but I will try you suggestion and disconnect the computer fully before running programs on the computer.
Sometimes when the freezes happen, everything on the computer freezes, even the seconds on the clock.
And if I am watching something in Quicktime/VLC/DivX and a freeze happens. After the freeze is over Quicktime will then resume x amount of time later in the movie. Where x is equal to the amount of time the froze lasted.
Hope this helps clarifying

10.4.11 failed to install on my Intel Imac, now I can't boot
Just as 10.4.11 was finishing installation on my Intel Imac, it came up with a message that said installation did not complete. I attempted to restart in order to try the installation again, and now I can't get past the opening grey screen. I get chimes, and the progress icon is rotating, but booting does not continue to the OSX screen. It just sits there on the grey screen. I think my system was somehow corrupted.
Any thoughts on what I should do next to get my system back up?Dear All,
Had the same problems with 10.4.11 update on my MBP 17"
Did all resets and safe boots. No effect.
Don't have original disks (at the office miles away)
Booted from old 10.4.4 that come with iMac disk.
Told it would not install "on this computer".
Didn't click restart instead clicked to Utilities and used Disk Utility to repair disk and permissions.
Still only getting to grey screen and spinning cog.
Used iMac to download update 10.4.11
Booted MBP as a target drive (holding down T on startup)
Used installer in iMac to install update to MacBookPro.
Reboot MBP. Little longer start up but all fine.
Not gonna update iMac! -

Thunderbolt Bus: iMac, Apple Inc., 23.10Did you upgradde the RAM? If so, this may be your problem.
If you want to upgrade to 32GB of RAM on your late 2013 27" iMac and don't want to pay Apple prices, buy the RAM from OWC.
My iMac, crashed with the first batch of Kingston RAM sourced from an Apple approved service centre. Fortunately I got a full refund then sourced the RAM from OWC and it works perfectly.
The benefits of OWC are
1) You can order and ship globally
2) The price is very competitve
3) The website clearly states how they test the RAM and the comaptibility with your computers model no.
4) They have a 30 day refund and a lifetime replacement policy
5) You can get a rebate on your old RAM, although I didn't bother taking this up.
Having been through the hassle, using OWC RAM is a no brainer and in my opinion the most convenient and effective upgrade. Hope this helps your decision! -
AirPort in Intel iMac loses connection and does not see network
I bought an Intel iMac in the summer of '06. I had no problems connecting my airport card to my house wireless network which uses an AirPort Extreme Base Station.
In september I brought my iMac to college and used an AirPort Express as my base station. I had no problems other than that the computer did not automatically reconnect to the network upon start up.
In december I returned home and configured the AirPort Express (located on the main level of the house) to extend the network of the AirPort Extreme (located upstair in the bedroom next to my iMac).
Lately the iMac loses connectivity to the wireless network randomly while the computer is on, even in the middle of using it. Not only does it lose the signal but does not list my network when i click the airport signal icon on the top bar of the screen. Once in a while it will have it listed but will give me an error when trying to connect. The only way I have of fixing the problem is to restart the computer.
I know the airport base station works fine and the network is still there becasue I have a PowerBook G4 that I will put right next to the iMac and the PowerBook will still be connected to the network.
Can someone help?I have a very similar problem. My machine's airport connection has always been a little flaky, but it's always gone on working. However, yesterday I turned on WEP 128 bit encription. It now connects for a few minutes and then I see the signal strength gradually die until it goes off completely. There are then two ways to get it back working: 1. close the lid, then open it again; 2. tun off the airport, then turn it on again. When I do that the signal strength suddenly comes on full after about 3 seconds. The G4 iMac I have doesn't suffer from this problem. I am using a netgear access port as the base station.

Intel iMac freezes, reboots and other issues
Intel iMac 17" 1.83 Ghz model (Had for a while now)
1 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM installed (Mac detects this fine)
Mac OS X 10.4.8
Beginning yesterday, the Mac froze when shutting World of Warcraft (which had been installed and working for at least two months). Computer completely hung. Restarted machine.
A few minutes later, the machine just switched itself off (or appeared to) - screen goes black. I held in power button for five seconds until I heard a click in the machine. This has happened repeatedly.
One time, the machine froze and the monitor refreshed at a visible rate (I could see the scan line) - each time the screen got darker.
Often, it will turn on, but the OS won't load unless I hold Alt down, or if I use OptionAlt+PR.
Ran disk utility from the install disk, only minor issues, all fixed. The problem of turning off still occurred.
Nothing in the kernel panic log. Diagnostics in System Profiler is saying it passes on the power on self test.
The confusing thing is, that after last night, I pulled the plug out, went to bed, praying to the computer fairy to fix it. This morning, it ran fine continuously for about 8 hours, running WoW, IRC app, iTunes etc. all fine.
Could it be a power supply issue? Is the thing overheating (the Mac is up to date with EFI Firmware update and SFC Firmware update).
I'm utterly stumped as to what's causing it. I don't want to send the thing off as then I'm without a computer.
Any ideas or advice?Has it done it since?
