Intel IMac screen black!!!

I have the first gen. Intel Imac, purchased March of 2006 (which makes the warranty JUST expired!) This is my home computer.
I am running 10.4.4
1.83GHZ Intel Duo
1.5 ram
2 days ago I was installing a firmware update, when the progress bar was right at the middle of the upgrade the screen went black. I wondered if it was done and restarting. I waited. Nothing. I finally restarted my machine, got the start-up chime, power light is on, but the screen remaned black.
I thought the firmware did not go through properly, so I came to work and made the "Firmware restoration" cd. Ran that last night, well, actually it won't run. No long "tone". Left the computer (on) for a while frustrated, and lo and behold from across the room I hear my screensaver come on (aquarium, you can hear the water!)
So this means my computer IS actually booting up, it's just the screen is not coming on!
Now what?????? (I am at work on my work computer now)

"So this means my computer IS actually booting up, it's just the screen is not coming on! Now what?"
Hi debdesign!
Unfortunately, the black screen is simply a sign that the update didn't go through. An independently failed display at that same time would be quite a spooky coincidence:)
Refer to this Apple Support article: About firmware updates for Intel-based Macs
If it didn't update, then the Restoration CD needs to be tried again, or needs to be redone. I know you don't want to hear that, but if it didn't install, there's no other conclusion.
Think it through for a minute. It's most likely the case that your update didn't do the update. Also, your firmware restoration didn't go through.
Rather than blaming this on the warranty having just expired, it appears rather likely that there is a flaw in either your download or installation procedure. Read all you can, figure out what the weak link is, and correct it.
If you can't figure it out, you'll be paying a repair shop to do so for you.
Suggestions for you:
The update instructions include: "Quit all other open applications."
Turn off AirPort. AirPort is an application.
"I came to work and made the "Firmware restoration" cd."
You need to make it using a Mac. Best of luck:)

  • 17" intel iMac screen froze then has gone completely blank. Any ideas?

    Hi There,
My 17" intel iMac screen froze then has gone completely blank..
I've done a SMC reset to no avail.
    thanks

If it won't startup in Safe Mode, then try Startup Manager or the Apple Hardware Test from your original Install Disc.

  • Intel iMac G5, black screen during erase and install -- PLEASE HELP!

My sister's Intel iMac G5 seriously has been a lemon, it has had SO many issues. It's now 2 years old, and has been rather slow for the maybe the last year, but over the last month or so it has gone way downhill, and it literally takes an hour to boot up, and 4-5 minutes to do anything (open an application, look at a photo in iPhoto, etc.). So, we've been trying to "erase and install" with her install discs to hopefully give the computer a clean boot and see if it helps at all. She has already backed everything up.
She started the erase and install last night, and it was going ridiculously slow. This morning when she woke up, the blue progress bar had gone about half way across. Then she went to get her kids ready, and when she came back in it looked like the computer was rebooting itself (gray screen with apple), but then the screen turned black and she can't do anything on it. Has anyone seen anything similar to this before?
We have had so much trouble getting this to work (we tried an archive and install a few days ago, but it gave her an error at the end). For about a day we couldn't even get the computer to boot up at all, but then miraculously yesterday morning it booted! Please help, I've converted her to Macs but if I can't get hers fixed she may never get one again!!

Does she have the Apple Hardware Test CD/DVD?

  • How to keep iMac screen black while keeping secondary monitor running for visual experiments in Matlab

    Hi,
I'm trying to run a visual experiment using PsychToolbox in Matlab.
I've attached a secondary monitor to my iMac for this purpose and I'm having difficulties trying to
    'black out' the iMac screen.
I need the secondary monitor to run at a refresh rate of 120Hz and at linearised luminance (did this for my secondary monitor),
so I can't really use my iMac screen. However, i need my iMac screen to be darken out because I'm doing a vision experiment.
I tried dimming my iMac screen but it doesn't go completely dark. I tried Ctrl+Shift+Eject (or was it Command) but it will darken both
monitors. I also tried mirroring, but it doesn't seem to work too.
I'm really stuck and any ideas will be greatly appreciated!
    shui
    NB:I'm using OS X Version 10.8.3.

I do not know the details of your experiment, but creating a black monitor is not difficult. For example a completely black page, e.g. in Power Point, set to fill the screen?
The advantage of doing this with PP is that you can move in to or out of the black page with just the space bar. You can set up your monitors so PP is displayed on just one monitor.

  • Make iMac screen Black and White

I have a 3.06 ghz imac running Leopard. I want to make the monitor show black and white (like greyscale back in the day). How do I do that? I've discovered different profiles under the Monitors CP. Thanks!

LMAO!!! perfect haha!! thanks heaps matt. I saw the screen black/white to the left of the greyscale checkmark but totally didn't see that till you mentioned it LOL. Thanks!

  • Intel imac screen to Dell 2405fpw

I presently have a new intel core duo mac mini connected to a Dell 2405fpw 24" monitor which I love very much. But am thinking of getting an all-in-one machine and was looking at the 20" intel imac.
Am debating weather the 20" imac would be wide enought. How much of the screen area is there? I have not actually seen the computer except what I see online. I know it is much more powerful than the mini, but I just need a wide view area. the dell is considered a "wide aspect" monitor. what about the intel imac?
    suggestions would be helpful.
    thanks

I am considering the Dell 2405fpw with a Mac Mini for a relative. Any caveats? I have a 23" Apple studio display attached to my dual G5. I have had it for 2 years and am completely satisified. The resolution is 1920 x 1600. That is the same as the Dell 2405fpw 24". Obviously the pitch is different. There are lots of complaints in various places about anti aliasing and blurry fonts on the 17" and 20" iMacs. Try google/mac to get a sample.

  • Replacing Intel Imac Screen question!

Is it possible to replace a core 2 duo imac screen (20 inch) from late 2006 with the same size screen from the newer aluminum models in 2007/2008

    No

  • Intel Imac Screen Fuzz, Blinking then Black

I've been running windows xp on an Intel based Imac24 since October. Within a week I began having screen issues. The screen would start blinking and the colors would become fuzzy and pixelate a bit. Then the screen goes to black. After a re-boot it is normal for sometimes up to two weeks. It's seems completely random. I've talked to Applecare several times and because it's happening when running windows XP, they can't seem to help.
I did a hardware test and everything came out OK. I don't know if its a graphics card or hardware issue or whether it has something to do with Bootcamp. Anyone else with similar problems? I have upgraded to OS10.5 and all the Windows drivers are up to date.

  • Full Firewire Port Failure (three different machines : iMac Intel, iMac G5, Black Macbook)

I'm experiencing a failure of all FireWire ports on all of my three machines. I believe this problem began with a faulty external, FireWire powered hard drive from G-Tech. Here are all my specs, followed by a rundown of the order of events that has lead to this situation, followed by the various troubleshooting I have done.
    Equipment :
    iMac Aluminum Intel - 24" Mid 2007 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 and 1 FW800 ports disabled
    iMac G5 - 20" - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 2 FW400 ports disabled
    MacBook - 13" black Early 2008 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 port disabled
    2 500GB G-Drives (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 5TB G-RAID Drive (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 250GB G-Drive Mini (by G-Tech) - FW powered
    Initial Setup :
1 500GB G-Drive connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800
    1 500GB G-Drive connected to first 500GB G-Drive via FW800 (daisy chained)
    1 250GB G-Drive connected to second 500GB G-Drive via FW400 (daisy chained)
1 5TB G-RAID connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800>400 adapter
    Sequence of Events :
I had transferred some files to my G-Drive Mini in order to move them to my MacBook from my iMac Intel. I copied the files to the G-Drive Mini and ejected it normally and plugged it into my MacBook via FW400. The drive would not mount, and the power indication light would not go on. After experimenting with various connections and cables I was able to get the drive to power with FW400 and USB connected at the same time, but the drive would still not mount.
I then plugged the G-Drive Mini back into the 2nd 500GB G-Drive as it was previously connected via FW400. This action caused the G-Drive to immediately reboot and eject itself from my iMac Intel.
I then attempted to plug the G-Drive Mini into my older iMac G5 via FW400. Immediately upon plugging in, the computer shut down, and would not restart.
At this point I kind of started to freak out. I was unaware of the extent of the damage, but was upset that the FW powered G-Drive Mini had shutdown my iMac G5. I contacted G-Tech Support and they offered to replace the drive and instructed me how to manually reset the computer's SMC by opening up the iMac and finding the Cuda switch. This worked and the computer was able to start and function again, but the FW400 port seemed to be disabled.
I then tried to swap out configurations and drives on my iMac Intel to see if there was any cable problems, but doing so, slowly rendered all my FireWire ports useless. It's almost as if the act of plugging in the FW-powered G-Drive Mini started a kind of shortout chain reaction. I soon learned that none of my hard drives would connect to any of my three machines, with any kind of cable combination via FW400 or 800.
I am currently able to connect my 5TB G-RAID drive to any machine via USB, as well as my G-Drive Mini. I am unable to access the other two external hard drives, as one has only FW400 and 800 ports and the other's USB connection is not functional as well on any machine.
    Troubleshooting Steps Taken :
I have on all machines, reset the SMC in the following methods. iMac G5 - manually, by opening the case and pressing Cuda switch. iMac Intel - unplug, hold power button, restart method. MacBook - unplug, hold power button, restart method.
I have also on all machines, reset the PRAM by the Cmnd + Opt + P + R method at startup.
I have also unplugged all cables / removed battery, from all machines and left alone for a period of at least 12 hours, then re-plugged in each device one at a time.
I have also restored my hibernate mode (through Terminal) on my iMac Intel to mode 3 and also turned on Virtual Memory in system preferences and set hibernatemode to mode 7, the restarted and attempted to plug in devices. The reason I even began to deal with the hibernate mode was because I had around the same time my ports began malfunctioning, installed the DeepSleep widget, which allows you to control your computer's hibernate mode. I thought that tweaking with this setting may have made my computer incapable of recognizing devices that were plugged in. I have since uninstalled the widget and experimented with different hibernatemodes to no avail.
I also have Repaired Disk Permissions and Repaired Disk on all my machines, from within my Admin User as well as from the OsX Install Disk.
Sometimes in my System Profiler (like right now for example on my iMac Intel) my computer is "Unable to list FireWire devices," but sometimes, no warning message comes up and it simply displays the appropriate Bus speed.
I also conducted a system restore using a backup from my 5TB G-Raid Drive via USB, to a date before these problems started, but my ports are still not working.
    Summary :
I am looking at a situation where all my FW ports on all my computers appear to be disabled, and possibly also on my four external hard drives, with one possible USB port malfunction on one external drive. The only root of this seems to be a malfunctioning FW-powered external hard drive.
Is this possible? Has this happened to anyone else before? G-Tech assures me that it is impossible for my 250GB G-Drive Mini to draw enough power from a computer to permanently disable any ports, but I have tried all of the FW port problem troubleshooting steps and am at a loss.
I do not have AppleCare and would like to avoid bringing two iMacs, a MacBook and four hard drives to the Apple store and take my chances with the geniuses.
I would appreciate any help or advice you all have. Thanks for reading and for your support!

Ok. So if that was too confusing, I've re-labeled this post with letters for my hard drives and some mapping of the connectivity configurations I have attempted.

    D > FW400 > A > FW800 > B > FW800 > iMac Intel

  • IMac screen blacks out when lowering brightness?

    iMac 27" mid-2010
If I lower brightness, after a short while screen cuts out - computer works fine in background.
When I am on highest brightness - everything is fine...
Does anyone know what is happening here?

    Further details:
    27' iMac mid-2010

  • IMac screen black

I bought a used iMac 21" six weeks ago. It worked fine until this morning. It was on over night;  in the morning when I moved the mouse and hit some keys the screen stayed black.
I turned the computer off and back on. The system does starts up (I can hear the startup sound); I can access the iMac hard drive via WiFi from my Macbook; I even got the of a video clip to play (at least the audio portion of it) by randomly clicking keys. But the screen stays black.
What might the problem be? I realize I'll probably have to take it in, but I'm trying to get a sense of how expensive the repair might be. Seeing as this is a used system that's over two years old, it probably doesn't make sense to throw a lot of money at it.
Is there anything I can try before taking it in?
The computer is not under any warranty or service plan.

If you have a really bright flashlight (I prefer LED), try shining it on the display to see if you can see a very faint image visible. You may have to move the light around. If you can see a faint image showing the desktop then that is an indication that the backlights didn't turn on for some reason. If no image is visible then you may have a graphics card or LCD issue. In either case you'll probably have to take it in for evaluation.
Before you take it in you should try resetting the SMC by pulling the power cord for 15 seconds, then reset the PRAM by holding down the command-option-p-r keys right after you press the power button to power up the system. Let the boot chimes sound twice, then let go of the keys. I don't have much success with it solving this type of issue, but it's worth a shot.

  • G4 iMac Screen Black

    Hi everyone,
This my first post and I must admit I am a bit desperate!
I have just turned on my iMac, there was a little pop and the screen remained black. The hard disk is spinning fine and has started up OK, so I can access it over ethernet (thank goodness!).
But the screen still remains blank..... any thoughts or ideas what might be wrong?? There isn't a brightness control on my keyboard, so this is unlikely!
Thanks in advance for any help offered!

No such beast. There are G3 and G4 iBooks but there are no G5 iBooks.

  • Make iMac Screen black but computer still on

    Hello,
I am trying to make it look like my computer is off for about a week, but it is still really on. It is hard to explain why I need to do so. If I made a solid black image fullscreen for about a week, will that damage the screen? Is there another way to make it so my screen is black but the computer is still on? Thank you for any advice!

Contact Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • IMac late 2009, screen blacks out running Yosemite 10.10.2

My iMac's screen blacks out for no apparent reason, and the computer is still running normally. But I can't see it.
I thought temperatures were to blame, resetted fans with Macs fan control to speeds, where everything is nice and cool, the problem persists.
The screen might black out, for no apparent reason while working, or when idle. Trying to restart manually, it might black out while in the login screen, or even the apple logo. Or it might even restart normally and work for 8 hours. I have been trying to leave login items out, even Macs fan control an iStats, and the problem remains.
If I clear PRAM while rebooting, I might get a new lease of working life, but not persistently.
The problem started around two months AFTER I installed yosemite and with no new programs installed at the time.
    Please Help.
