Intel imac slow to to to sleep since 10.6.8 update

Since upgrading my Intel iMac to 10.6.8 a few days ago, it is slow to go to sleep. After clicking on sleep, (or using Opt/Command/Eject), it takes between 20 and 30 seconds to go to sleep. Same problem when shutting it down. Restart is still as fast as before. I used Disk Utility to check the permissions and had to run Repair, because the permissions were so messed up. Restarted it after that, but sleep problem continues to exist. I want to upgrade to Lion, but wondering if I should figure this problem out first. Any ideas?  Thanks!

Got the answer on another question - consider this solved! (i was using older keystroke commands).

  • 20" intel iMac is having bad week, "Sleep" hiccup, now can't find system

    Hi all,
I'm running a 20" intel iMac, purchased new in January 2008. It's been a trooper.
A handful of days ago, it developed an odd glitch. The fan would "power down" like what one hears when the computer would go to sleep -- but this would be in the middle of use. It would immediately come back up. No screen dimming. On most occasions, this would take down open and in-use programs (for example, Safari).
Today it again did this, and shortly thereafter, the system "froze" (cursor was movable but no reaction from any open program; no visible activity from anything running). I rebooted by holding the power key for 10 seconds, waited for some time (±15 minutes), then came back to power it on. It powers up, fan spins up, white screen with apple and the spinning wait icon (not the beachball, but the "clock lines" one normally sees at restart). It does not progress beyond this point.
In short, I see this as two troubles that I need help with.
    1. The system was damaged/corrupted during the last startup, and the drive can no longer see it.
    2. There is a problem with the fan, a possible overheating issue, or perhaps an issue with a power module/SMC. The fact that programs are crashing with this makes me somewhat skeptical of this being merely "dusty fan" or even common overheating.
I'd like an idea of what steps to take next, either to diagnose what is wrong with my iMac, or to bring her back to health.

    HI,
Unfortunately, it sounds like the startup disk needs replacing.
Boot from your Mac install disk and run Disk Utility.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode
If the hard disk appears to be ok, you could try Resetting the SMC

  • IMac won't wake from sleep since Lion!

Since installing Lion my iMac (intel core 2Duo) won't wake from sleep properly using my wireless keyboard, trackpad or magic mouse! I haven't changed any settings and I have to hold down the power button to force shut down and then restart! Any help?? x

    Hi all
Finally went to the Genius Bar to ask the question as nothing has worked.  They said I needed to reset my PRAM.  I did it (Following these instructions... http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 ) and it worked.
So relieved....it was really annoying me.
Hope this helps others with the same issue.
    Thanks

  • Intel iMac slow Wifi - G5 iMac fast

I just installed a brand new iMac (3GHz Intel). It's standing next to my old G5 iMac.
When I visit an Internet speedtester (speedtest.nl) the old G5 reports 230kbps every time (which it should). The new iMac however shows an enormous variation and seldom come above the 200kbps level.
The option-Airport click shows 130 as speed for the new iMac (I have a new Time Capsule connected to the Internet) and the G5 shows 54 as speed. That sounds okay to me.
I've deleted some Safari and Internet related plists and the first test in Safari did reach the 230kbps, but after that it dropped to about 80kbps. Firefox shows the same problems.
Anyone any idea how to tackle this problem?
    Thx,
    Marco

Remember there will be some contention between 802.11 G and 802.11 N. Just like when the G standard came out, there was an option to allow B compatibility. This means G clients had to RTC and CTS because the B clients could not talk above 11Mbits and therefore may or may not be able to grab a timeslot to transmit. Are you using 2.4G N or 5G N? You can tell when your iMac connects by holding down the option key and clicking the AirPort Icon. Just look at the channel you are on. Also look at the Rate. Anything above 54Mbits means you are using N. Channels 1 to 11 means you are on 2.4 and Channels that are higher means you are using A. Most likely you are on 2.4 since I am assuming all of your MACs are using the same WAP (wireless access point).
If you have both machines right next to each other, it can definitely be the coexistence between G and N networks. When you are using N with 2.4 you are using narrow band N with Apple products. This can be susceptible to interference. Try moving your machines away from each other and try it again.

  • Intel imac slowed to a crawl.

I unwittingly scanned a 1.5 gb tiff file to my desktop. I edited it in photoshop, closed it, reopened it, then things slowed way down. I tried to move it to a folder but the computer is so unresponsive it's hard to do anything. It runs fine on an external boot drive. I've reset the PRAM, repaired disk permissions, repaired the disk (it showed no problems) to no avail. It's a 2 TB seagate drive with 1.3 TB free space, I've got 4GB of memory installed.  At times I get this message: "Your Mac OS X Start up disc has no more space available for application memory."
    Any ideas how to proceed?
    Thanks,
    David

Your iMac can take up to 6 GBs of RAM.
    Maximum Memory
6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
If you just recently upgraded to OS X 10.7 Lion, newer versions of OS X use a lot more CPU, GPU, RAM and hard drive resources.
4 GBs of RAM simply isn't enough.
The Application Memory error you were getting is telling you that your iMac does not have enough Internal RAM resources to run additonal Appications.
What version of Phoroshop is this?
Having this file of your desktop probably did slow down things.
And if you were working on this in Photoshop, a 1.5 GB PS  file really turns into about 3 times that size when you open it and start working on it from within PS.
How much space is left on the external drive?
In PS Preferences you can setup scratch disks for PS to use for storing temp data when working with PS files.
You could set your primary scratch disk for the external drive and set a secondary scratch disk as your internal drive.
This can help to speed up both PS and iMac somewhat when working with PS files.
You can purchase reliable Mac RAM from online Mac RAM vendors Crucial memory or OWC(macsales).

  • Much slower wake-up from sleep since upgrade to ML

    Hello,
I am running Macbook Pro Retina and just upgraded to Mountain Lion. Everything is working fine except I find a much slower wake-up time when I open the lid.
On Original Lion the laptop was always waking up in less than 1 s. Now it's systematically more than 5.
I am wondering if anyone has a similar behavior and if this can be a ML issue?
I wish not to have to reinstall ML from scratch having to restore so many applications and settings...
I have tried PRAM reset but no help.
    Anyone?
    Thanks
    Jeremy

    Some issues solved.
I have closed down iCloud and all running a whole lot better.
Also did another restart after unplugging the power lead etc.
    1) I don't need or use iCloud so on Lion it was logged out.But Mountain Lion seems to have decided I do need it and some parts turned back on.Only trouble was that not knowing iCloud was turned on some data in iCal was lost.Had to go back into iCloud bring iCal up to date, export and then reimport after iCloud logged out.
    2) Log on from turn off now much better and Safari so much quicker.
3)I have no idea if iCloud was the problem and the SMC reset curred the issue and I am not worried it is working
I can live without the bother of iCloud

  • Monitor won't wake from sleep since 10.4.8 update

Since upgrading to 10.4.8 my display (Dell 2405FPW) wouldn't wake up from sleep mode (overnight only) and I'd just get a black screen (although it sounded like the CPU was powering up and working fine) ... but after visiting some Apple discussions I've done some troubleshooting ... and today, the Monitor DID finally wake up from sleep ... but the display was a pixelated mess(!?)
To date I have verified and repaired all permissions. I've zapped the PRAM. I've RESET the SMU and the NVRAM and I have deleted the PowerManagement.plist ... but this problem still persists, and it requires a restart to correct (which is maddening) Could it be an extension conflict? The video card? Power Supply? Sounds like a LOT of ibook and iMac folks are experiencing the very same problem.

Interesting, You, like me, have an undetermined sleep problem and a Dell 2405 FPW monitor with a built in USB 2 hub. Temporarily substitute another monitor to see it the problem persists. Also, did your G5 require a new PCI graphics card?
An ATI Radeon 9600 (PC/MAC Pro) PCI graphics card was installed on mine to handle that large screen Dell. Generally the system works again with a hard restart if it can't wake from sleep--try pushing the tower's front power button for more than 8 seconds and repeat this 8 sec restart if sleep persists. Mine sometimes goes to deep sleep even if the Energy Saver panel shows computer sleep "Never". Since the Dell was designed for a PC the Mac's auto detect mechanism for the sleep state of online monitors may be fooled by something in the design of the Dell monitor--only a theory--my Dell 2405 sometimes goes black and on again with mouse movements even though my sleep corner is turned off. I think I'll try a 24 hours with only my second Sony 17 inch monitor plugged into the card.
Is the USB cable from the Dell USB hub still plugged in? Was your G5 originally equiped with USB 2 ports or did you add a PCI USB 2.0 card? The Dell hub is USB 2.0 and it is logical, maybe even critical, to plug your high speed peripherals and the Dell hub in a USB 2 card while retaining original USB 1.1. ports for your wired keyboard (wireless keyboard might also be a problem) and other powerless (or AC plugged) peripherals--cameras etc.
This may also be a PCI card problem as I had a lesser problems with sleep even before I bought the DEll 2405 FPW and had only PCI SCSI and USB 2 cards from Adaptec. I 'll keep looking for solutions. Post if you find any. For further info see:

  • IMac will not wake from sleep after 10.4.8 Update

Recently after a couple of software updates my IMac goes to sleep and the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse will not wake it. The option for wake with Bluetooth is checked. I zapped the PRAM and also checked the HD, Nothing has changed. NOTE: No new software or hardware installs were done except for 10.4.8 update and the other mac software updates. This did not happen in prior versions of the OS on my iMac. Is this a new bug?
iMac G5 1.8 (pre iSight)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Bluetooth, Wake from Sleep

I've been dealing with this same issue, have tried everything, but to no avail. After MANY sessions on the phone with Apple tech support, as well as an Apple product specialist, I was advised to erase my computer and do a fresh install. I did an archive an install, which didn't help, but am not thrilled about the prospect of erasing everything and starting over. This problem started after the August 2006 round of updates. I feel it's bluetooth related, because I used a usb keyboard and mouse for a week as a test, with no problem. The funny thing is, I unchecked "allow bluetooth device to wake computer" thinking it might help, but the bluetooth devices continue to wake the computer anyway (except when it refuses to wake, of course!)

  • IMac takes 30  seconds to sleep after 10.8.5 update.

Recently, and just after installing OS X 10.8.5, I've noticed that my 2012 27" iMac takes at least 30 seconds to go into sleep mode upon choosing so from the Apple dropdown menu. Prior to installing OS X 10.8.5, my iMac would go to sleep in less than a second. I've looked up this isse on the support communities and have tried many of the suggestions, including checking print cues and resetting the SMC and PRAM, but all to no avail. I haven't installed anythign new on my computer, but my huntch is that there is some type of application lagging which causes the computer to take so long to sleep. Is there a way to go about searching for the culperet program? Or any other suggestions? Also of note, if I restart the iMac, wait for it to reboot, and then quickly put it to sleep, it goes into sleep mode normally, however after about 10 minutes of using the computer, if I try to sleep the iMac it will take upwards of 30 seconds to sleep.
    Thanks,
    Regards--- jgurbisz

I am on a Mac Pro 2.8 (3.1) 2008 model.  12 Gb ram and a radeon 5870.  This supplemental update has been pretty horrible.  I have had the following issues: messed up sleep, random wake ups, and one hard crash.  I have also had the long sleep delay where the fans crank up and it takes forever to sleep...only a restart cures this, which is pretty useless.  The mach file showing but that was fixed with a terminal command.  Lost video chat icon on iMessage for a while but that has now mysteriously returned.  The last annoying bug I have suffered with is what seems like horribly reduced audio quality out of the Apple LED 24 inch cinema display speakers.  It sounds like 22kz mono both input and output.
I would rate this update a full on zero out of ten, for creating problems that never existed in 10.8.5.

  • Problems waking up after sleep since 10.8.3 update

A couple of weeks ago, I updated to 10.8.3. Since then, I have been having difficulty waking the machine after sleep. I get the constant beach ball. On a forced restart, I will get the spinning gear followed by the prohibitory sign, like it can't find the OS. I have tried rebooting in safe mode, resetting PRAM/NVRAM, repaired disk and disk permissions with disk utility, checked the status of hardware with (AHT), reinstalled OS X (twice), but the problem persists. I'm at a loss and have no idea what else to do.
I'm seriously regretting upgrading from Snow Leopard at all.
I've been trying to run time machine to back everything up, but my external USB backup disks keeps randomly unmounting, so I can't even get a solid backup now.
    Please help.

No, it has nothing to do with being Friends or not.
There are more and more security issues with java, Oracle comes with updates almost every few weeks. Until lately Apple had it in theuir distribution system, but because of the security issues decided that it was not good business to distribute automatically this leaky system. So with new system updates the Java is removed to make sure the customers reinstall the latest version. You can download from both Oracle and Apple, but don't download from any other source.
Luckily I do not need it anymore and have not installed Java since a few months.

  • Intel iMac Core Duo will not accept OS 10.4.8 update

In a rash moment I once more decided to respond to Software Update's continual reminder that I have not updated to OS 10.4.8. I tried twice before and each time resulted in disaster with what I have been told is a kernel panic. During boot-up the screens wipes to grey with a black square saying 'RESTART'.
Then follows days of scouring backups to get everything back again. Well it just did it again. Why will it not accept the (Combo or Delta) update. Some have pointed fingers at RAM but why should the RAM work fine for more than a year and suddenly not for OS 10.4.8 and then work fine again once it has all been retreated to OS 10.4.7 ?

This is all just too weird !
The Apple Hardware Test CD would not run. I tried twice. It got as far as the 'probe' and didn't get any further.
Swapped out the 2 x 1Gb RAM cards for the original (piddling) 2 x 256Mb and tried the AHT again. It ran and found no problems.
AHA ! So it was the memory all along.
Put the 2 x 1Gb cards back in and ran AHT. It ran and found no problems
Okay, let's try the new 10.4.9 update via Software Update.
SAME THING AS BEFORE. Grey screen with the little black one saying restart.
Okay I'll put the 2 x 256Mb cards in and see if it manages to start. Before doing so I gave it one more try and after a self-induced restart halfway through boot-up it started - with the 2 x 1Gb memory.
Went back to Software Update and found a Java update and Airport. Ran them and when it restarted we were back to the Grey 'panic screen'. Tried once more - same thing. Swapped memory for the 2 x 256 and the iMac started. Tried a restart just to make sure. Back to the panic screen.!
removed and replaced the 2 x 256Mb and it started up. Restarted - Panic Screen.
Put in 2 x 1Gb - it started. Restarted - Panic Screen again. Replaced 2 x 256 - started. Restarted - Panic. Restarted - It fired up. Now I'm writing this whilst it is on because I cannot guarantee it will restart without swapping memory or reseating it or maybe just ******* into the wind.
Poxy **** thing can't make up its mind. There is no pattern.

  • Intel imac 24" seems to overheat top LH corner and goes to sleep

Intel iMac 24" - Since upgrading to Lion, my iMac keeps halting - particularly whilst playing back video - and goes into sleep mode.
The iMac is very hot in the top left hand corner so I assume that there is a thermal safety cut-out that is putting it to sleep ?
Tapping the keyboard a few seconds later staarts it up again but very soon heating issue causes it to go to sleep again.
I've never opended it up so I don't know what componenet is sitting in the top LH corner that is getting very hot - suspect its the graphics card.
anyone else had the same issue and know how it can be resolved ?
    tia,
    Max

Your machine is working kind of hard, the first thing I'd try is doing both a SMC and PRAM resets, in fact doing 2 of each wouldn't hurt.
With only 493MB of free RAM you should upgrade. One thing you can check when you do this is to see if there is any dust that has accumulated on the intake port, this could be obstruction air flow. Do NOT blow are in but you can vacuum it out. I would recommend using www.macsales.com (OWC) and Crucial as vendors. I prefer OWC because they specialize in Macs so you know what they sell works, have terrific customer service and competitive pricing.  BTW OWC has how-to videos that show how to install RAM.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
