Intel imac switches off unexpectantly and won't turn back on

It only just started happening after 7 months. I've tried removing and replacing the RAM. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I unplug and re-plug everthing. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't. It turns off after approx. 2 hours and sometimes sooner if I hit the 'dashboard' button on the mouse.

A couple of things you can do to test that mouse, mopea . . .
1. Go into System Preferences>Keyboard/Mouse.
Select the little button at the top (I'm assuming this is what you're called the "Dashboard Button". Then from the pulldown menu, select "Off."
Does the black screen still happen???
2. Do you have an older Apple (Non-Mighty) mouse you can use to test?
It might also be a problem with your power supply.
Or your (as I understand it) failed attempt at upgrading messed up some files. But let us know about the mouse suggestions above, OK?
EDIT: Have you tried to apply the 10.4.9 COMBO Update?
You can find it here:
ComboUpdate
(If you do, make sure all your peripherals are unplugged from the Mac first.
In your case, I would repair permissions before & afterward.)

  • New iPhone 5s shut off unexpected and won't turn back on

I just received my new 5s. I activated it. Made a phone call. I was downloading my apps, and using them, when the phone shut off unexpected. I tried to turn the phone back on, the apple logo appeared, then it went to the waiting circle for a couple of minutes. After a couple of minutes the screen had a blue screen for a second, then it went back to the waiting circle, then it turned off. I've tried turning it on a couple of times with the same results. Help!

    Hello Keith,
Congratulations on your new iPhone 5s!  I would be concerned too if my iPhone shut off unexpectedly and would not power on.  I found an article with steps you can take when you encounter an issue like this.  I recommend following the steps below:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • Iphone 4 turns off randomly and won't turn back on unless it's plugged in

Iphone 4 turns off randomly and won't turn back on unless it's plugged in.
    Has anyone had this problem?
If I leave the phone (thus not doing anything to it) for an extended period of time say 2 hrs. It will have turned off and you can't turn it back on unless you plug it in, but it's got heaps of "Battery" left.
Ever so often it will turn off randomly as well, and can't turn it on again.

If your iPhone is powering off, this is not normal.
Try restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. If no change after doing so, your iPhone has a hardware problem. The iPhone includes a one year warranty.

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2014 shut off randomly and won't turn back on.

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro(Mid 2014) won't turn back on. I was just typing up my essay and it just turned straight off and won't turn back on. It has happen several times before and all I had to do was press the buttons(SMC method) and the PVRAM thing and it would turn back on. But now it doesn't turn on at all. How do I fix this issue? I had went today to the Apple Store and had a appointment at 3:15-3:25 and I was late by 2 minutes, so they couldn't help me and offered me to come back at 5PM, but will busy so I asked for 5 Monday. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Back when it was operating it would shut off whenever I was using it at the random times. This is my first MacBook so I don't know if it's suppose to get Hot and loud sometimes when operating and then cool off afterwards if that helps out. It shutoff last week wednesday and doesn't turn on at all, but will charge to fully green though. Anyone got any suggestions? I do have a MacBook screwdriver to open it, so if anyone knows anything about the inside and how to resolve the issue it would be great. I don't know how to remove the battery so if you do know please tell me or some keyboard trick would be helpful!   All my data is on this so I would like to solve before Apple erases my data.

  • My iPhone 5s turns off randomly and won't turn back on

Yesterday my iphone just shut off randomly even after being charged at 100%. I gave it a hard reset three times and it finally turned back on. But today it blanked out again and every time I try to turn it on the apple icon pops up but then disappears. The screen goes black and nothing happens. I've tried the hard reset and that doesn't work, I've even tried holding down all four buttons and it still doesn't work.

  • IPhone 5s Shuts off/down and won't turn back on?

I just updated the iPhone 5s with the new IOS software that apple just released I belive so this week (IOS 7.1?) and this was just yesterday (March 14, 2014), and just also yesterday I experienced that my iPhone 5s had shut off; which wasn't normal but and 1 hour later it turned back on and everyrthing was okay. Just today (March 15, 2014) in the early morning around 3AM the phone was working just fine and when I was using the phone I still kept it charging, around 10AM the phone had shut off again but the batery had been some where aroung 30% to 50%, I had thought that the phone battery drained out quickly so I go charge it, 30 Min. to 1 hour later I check on the phone to see if it can turn on, and it hadn't.
All I remember is that I hadn't been around water or it hadn't been damage that might have caused the phone to stop working.
it is still (March 15, 2014) 6PM and it is still down and not powering back up!!
I also googled on the software IOS 7.1 to see if it was the Software update that might have caused this.
Please, Please, Please repsond with help to this discussion!!
Could it been the (IOS 7.1) that had caused the iPhone 5s to shut down?

  • IMac G4 just turned off and won't turn back on

When I woke my iMac G4 from sleep, it turned on then all of a sudden turned off and shut down on me and won't turn back on. Any suggustions? It has Mac OS X 10.4.11 and before today worked perfectly.

Replies to such old threads are likely to be a bit curious.
Mostly as to a reason why they are brought up, now.
The link to XLR8 page shows an earlier iMac G4 model
and that is slightly different than the last iMac G4 USB2.0
(15"/17'/20") models. They tend to be more like this inside:
    •Mr Totes iMac G4 USB2.0 take apart:
    http://www.mrtotes.co.uk/page1/page1.html
Thermal paste and other steps are required with access
into these layers where the 3.6V 1/2AA lithium battery,
and factory RAM slot, HDD, optical drive, etc, are located.
•3.6V Lithium 1/2AA PRAM clock battery, example:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/BAA36VPRAM/
Also, the 17"/20" can use 2048MB RAM when both slots
get upgraded to 1024MB each, respective to type in each.
The bottom slot uses the same SODIMM as the last iBook
G4 (mid-2005) does, as an upgrade, exact in specification.
The power supply can be tested via small ports in the bottom
under metal plate (by reset button, by airport card slot) to
see if the power supply has failed in one of its voltages.
Anyway, curious to see an old thread come up like this.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!
