Intel iMac trying to die a death

A few of days ago my iMac began to go into the rainbow wheel for any command i gave it, taking up to three minutes to even open a folder.
Then the next day after leaving it to sit overnight, it stopped doing that and everything ran suspiciously fine. The next day, it crashed delivering the "please force a restart" screen in the middle of use completely out of the blue. Since then it has been doing the same thing straight after startup, it gets as far as loading the wallpaper, see here: http://imgur.com/nwIvP.jpg
very worried about it, wondering if anyone has any idea what might be happening?

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Sorry to hear about the problem, while I can't read the message on the screen you provided it appears to be a Kernel Panic. KP's can be caused by numerous things including RAM that has failed, hard disc failure or even insufficient RAM or HD space. Mac's need between 10-15% of the disk space available so the first thing I'm going to ask is how large is your internal HD and how much available space does it have? Next, please let us know exactly what iMac you have and how it's configured.
I've included and excellent article article for you to begin doing your own troubleshooting. I'd suggest reading it over and seeing where it leads you.
Also please look over this letterand see if this is the message you got.
Regards,
Roger

  • Intel iMac with 10.5.8 - Grey Screen of Death but worse please help!

Okay, this has happened three times now in six months, and I'm about to go out of my mind. Everytime it's a little different but basically:
My iMac becomes unresponsive, whether by a system lock up, or I wake up in the morning (like this morning) to a black screen with the white light still on, as if it were asleep. Nothing I do wakes the computer or otherwise makes it respond, so I hold the power button down for a few seconds and it shuts off.
Now, when I boot up, I get a grey screen with the Apple logo with the spinning black/grey pinwheel.
Inserting a CD does nothing. In fact, now my only install CD of Leopard is stuck in the slot-loading drive. I've tried everything I can to eject it: hold down eject on boot, left mouse button on boot, option on boot, commandoption+pr, command+v, etc. etc. etc.
I'm a software developer for OS X and have extensive hardware knowledge, so I kind of know a bit about what I'm doing.
The iMac will not boot off of a CD. It doesn't even recognize the CD. I have an external USB 2.0 hard drive with a current Time Machine backup, but I don't think those are bootable.
Anyway, in the past, to resolve this issue, I've had to take the iMac apart, put the internal hard drive into an external enclosure, and mount the drive onto my MacBook Pro. Interestingly enough, when I do this the drive mounts perfectly fine and shows all files exactly as they should be. So it's something to do with Leopard destroying it's boot record, or some other system configuration.
Even worse, I cannot simply reinstall Mac OS X from the laptop, because the installer says the hard drive needs to be formatted before an install can occur. So either way I'm losing all my data (even though as I said I have a current backup).
Well this time I haven't taken it apart yet. But the install CD is stuck in the drive. Even if I got the hard drive out, and mounted on my MacBook, my other install CD is too damaged to use, so I MUST get this CD out of the iMac.
    My questions are:
What do you do when the grey screen of death occurs, and the computer won't even boot off of the CD?
What do you do to get a CD stuck in an iMac out? Especially when the iMac is in the grey screen of death mode?
What in the world is causing this to happen EVERY 3-6 MONTHS??!
Someone please help... I'm going insane.

Hi I am having the identical problem with my 24" intel iMac 2007..... Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I'm on round 3 now and with a completely blank grey screen and it won't start up from the disk 1.. I also have diskwarrior and techtool pro as well as the osx leopard and snow leopard disk... The HD is new.. Replaced by apple 3 months ago.. Don't know the cause the first time this happened about 9 months ago.. 2nd time, 6 months ago it never rebooted from the office for mac 2008 critical update... Did a clean install after backing up to TC... Took it to apple replaced HD even though it appeared ok, they checked all hardware and I ran techtool pro daily ever since. Last week software update had several updates avail. Office for mac being one of them.. I updated and have never booted since.. . I swear to never ever use another Microsoft product as long as I live if I can just fix this once more... Help me please

  • 2nd Intel iMac Death - am I the only one?

My 95 day old 20" Intel Imac stopped booting a couple of weeks ago even though the light came on. I took it in for repair to the local Apple store. Got it back finally when they got a new logic board in, and within 90 minutes had the *exact same problem.*
Needless to say, I'm pretty peeved at this. I can't believe I'm the only one having massive issues like this, and am pretty sure it's not the logic board now.
Is anyone else having major iMac death problems like this? I'm ready to just tell them to get me a brand new machine since there appears to be something wrong with this one.

I have been using my iMac, but at lunch time I left him doing nothing. When I was back not save screen was activated, and neither keyboard nor mouse provided effect after touching them. I decide to turn it off after more than one attempt pressing keyboard. When I turn it on, I got only a white screen and a noisy hard-disk.
My firt Apple, 17" Intel Imac, died after 32 days (100 hours of working time). This happend on 11 march '06, although the store told me that the failure is in the hard disk !! (but could the logic board) after 28 days I still waiting to receive it back repaired.
Is it always like this ? The store it is not in the position to give me a forecast of when I'll get back. Shall I do something ? I'm using my old PC to write this reply. Regards

  • Sound on new Intel Imac died

Yesterday I set up a brand new Intel iMac for a client. Everything was working perfectly. Less than an hour later she calls to tell me that the sound has died. Sure enough, you can barely hear any sound from the internal speakers. Setting the volume to max does nothing. Even the start up chime is severely muted.
Before I left the client the sound was fine. I had restarted the machine and got a loud healthy startup chime. We sent some messages from Mail.app and the jet whooshing sound was also clear.
After I had left, the client called complaining that a game she was running (Freeverse's 3D Bridge, PowerPC only) had frozen the machine. After force quitting the program, she called back and reported the sound had died.
The Mac in question is an Intel iMac that was purchased last week. It has only the stock RAM (512 MB) and had beedn updated to 10.4.6. I took the following troubleshooting steps:
    1. Rebuilt permssions
    2. Trashed all sound prefs.
    3. Rest PRAM
    4. Launched the Audio Midi setup and tried re-setting those prefs.
    5. Attached a different keyboard and external speakers.
    6. Ran the Hardware test (came up clean)
    7. Erased and re-installed 10.4.4
Nothing in the list above has helped. I'm going to attempt to update to 10.4.6 letter tonight. I've done a quick search of the forums, but none of the suggested solutons have helped.
Any, ANY help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
    Sincerely,
    Matt

Do the best thing you can do to a brand new machine
    with problems---take it back.
Losing system sounds is one thing (and easy enough to
troubleshoot on your own), but losing your startup
chime is a bit worrisome as this in itself is a
diagnostic signal that tells you everything is ok
with the system. Losing it may be a symptom of a
    deeper problem.
You have a 14 day return policy and a full warranty
on the machine so bring it back and let them handle
    it.
No sense "troubleshooting" this much on a brand new
    machine, if you ask me...
My thanks to everyone who responded. This has been an extremely frustrating experience all around.
    Tim:
Thanks for the tip; I'd never even heard of the SMC before. Unfortunately it didn't work. The problem shows up in any other account.
    d-mo:
I agree with you. The iMac is a lemon and will have to go back. The irritating thing is that the stupid machine was working when I left the client's. Oh, well.
Again, thanks to everyone for the help.

  • I am using iphoto 6.06 for my intel imac.  I have been trying to print pictures from iphoto and i keep getting a message that states " the picture you are trying to print is in the iphoto library"  what can i do to be able to print a photo from iphoto

I am using iphoto 6.06 for my intel imac.  I have been trying to print pictures from iphoto and i keep getting a message that states " unreadable file: the following file could not be imported.  the file is in the iphoto library folder"  also when i try to print a picture from iphoto i get a message that says "no page was selected"
not sure what happened but i can pnly print when i drop the photo onto my desktop as an 8.5 x 11 size picture and i am trying to print 4x6's

Since the new library gives you the same message log into another user account on your Mac and see if you can run iPhoto without getting that message.  If you get that message there also a reinstall of iPhoto seems indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all available updates to it.

  • IPod Nano 4G frozen at language screen. Tried holding down menu-click without success. Have gone through restore process, but it continues to stick at the language screen. Intel iMac 3ghz, OS X 10.6.7, iTunes 10.3.1 (55).

I have a frozen iPod Nano 4G. After syncing it gets stuck at the language screen and cannot proceed any further.
I have tried holding down the Menu and click buttons for >6 seconds, without luck. Have reset to factory settings and re-syncd, but it keeps getting stuck at the language screen.
I suspect it is the latest version of iTunes causing the problem, as I just installed it a couple of days ago and this is the first sync since the update.

+Do you have access to, another Firewire enabled Mac, that you could use, to attempt a retrieval of data, using Firewire Target Disk Mode?+
A question on this Firewire Target Disk Mode - If I could get access to another Firewire enabled Mac and connected the two together, host #2 to Target #1, with a Firewire cable (6-pin to 6-pin), and power the two up, even though #1 would not be booted up to the desktop but just have the hard drive powered up, would the hard drive of #1 be accessible to #2? If so, would I be able to perform any repairs or do anything to the drive to enable it to bootup the #1 computer? This would be similar to when I remove and hook up a 2.5" IDE-ATA PC laptop hard drive to another PC computer, usually a desktop, via a drive adapter and USB 2.0 cable, as an external drive. When I do this in a PC, it's usually one that is unable to boot up to Windows due to malware or other problems. I am able to see the files and folders on the #1 computer's hdd and then clean out any malware (virus/spyware), or add/replace any corrupt/damaged Windows files that might be keeping the #1 computer from booting up. After that, I can usually return the hdd to the #1 computer and boot up normally to finish any clean up or change any settings.
I had considered taking the hdd out of this damaged iMac computer and attempting to hook it up with a PC, but after seeing how difficult it is to get to this hdd and not sure of what I'd do when and if I did get the two connected together, I put the idea way back as a last resort. I wasn't sure I'd even be able to see any folders or files on the Mac hdd due to the differences between OS X and WinXP. And, after reading that Macs aren't susceptible to malware, I didn't know what I would be accomplishing.

  • Kernel panic after trying to update to version 10.4.10 (Intel iMAC)

    Hi all,
yesterday evening I wanted to install (via automatic software update) the new software update "Mac OS X 10.4.10 (Intel)" on my intel iMAC. Unfortunately the installation failed and I don't know why. Having not yet restarted I tried the installation again but again it failed.
Then I restarted my iMAC and since then I get every time now a kernel panic: 'Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI"' ... Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 8.9.1 ...
I tried already several things like
    - booting in safe mode (holding <shift>): not possible
    - hardware check (holding 'D' with MAC OS X DVD #1 in drive): detailed hardware check ok
    - reset of PRAM (holding command-option-p-r): didn't help
    - starting in single-user-mode (holding command-s): get same error (panic)
    - start in "open firmware mode"(holding command-option-o-f): not possible
I'm just a MAC user sind February of this year and not yet that experienced with kernel panics and how to overcome such a problem. I hope that someone more experienced can give me a hint or a solution description how to get my iMAC running again.
    Thanks for any help,

  • Intel imac 2.4ghz just died

I have been a happy intel iMac user, ok occassional video tearing but liveable, and use the iMac for photojournalism work. Just browsing ebay and everything went dead, black screen, no sound, no lights, nothing.
I checked the 10amp fuse and it is fine, there is power in the cable to the iMac, however it will not start up and is completly dead. The iMac is now out of warranty, as far as I can tell, so if anyone has anything I can try to get the iMac to startup it would be greatly appreciated.
I have a full backup via Time Machine (I hope, it does give the odd error now and again), but the days without being able to work with the machine are going to kill me and my business, I will have to boot up the windows vista machine just to keep on top of things. Has anyone else experience this problem with the iMac 24" and found the fault if it is common?

Hi , I've just seen your post. My iMac had trouble starting up, pressed button started to power up and a couple of seconds in just died, then nothing at all, I took it in for repair, and although they said they hadn't experienced any problem with my mac, they did replace something to do with power as they knew this component had because this fault in other machines. This has happened again to me this evening and it took me a while to get it to power up, and consequently I found this discussion board and placed my 1st post, but so far no one has been able to offer any suggestions other than take it back. Good luck

  • My G5 iMac died how do I move  iTunes that I bought to my new Intel iMac

I was able to save the hard drive from my dead G5 iMac and it's now a bootable image on an external firewire drive.
How can I move all my iTunes that I bought to my new Intel iMac?
BTW from what I've read you shouldn't use Migration Assistant when moving from a PPC to an Intel Mac so I don't think I want to go that route.
Any ideas as to how I can do this and not lose all my iTunes that I bought?

    i think this should work:
    1) boot from the image.
    2) use these tips to move the library from the image to another external HD. from the iMac, use the +choose library+ operation below.
    or
    3) if you have a suitably sized iPod, click here.
    or
    4) drag & drop the entire iTunes folder to the iMac. put it in the proper location on the iMac in HD/users/your_name/music (overwrite the iTunes folder there - presumably void of any content right now). when done, on the iMac, launch iTunes with the option key pressed. you will see this window
click on +choose library+ and navigate to the +iTunes library file+ (inside the iTunes folder you just dragged & dropped).
    any help ?

  • Intel Imac display problems

I have an old intel imac (17 inch white screen) bought just over 5 years ago.  The imac has just 'died', the screen will not display anything.  It will chime on starting up and I can hear activity but nothing displays on the screen.
I returned it to my local Apple store, upon investigation they said the graphics card had gone (£500 to replace) so I bought a brand new iMac a few days ago.
All of my data is backed to up an external hard drive.
I run a database programme on the old iMac called 4D, which has a huge amount of data stored in it (all backed up).
I have installed the most current version of 4D on my new Imac, but it will not open the data on my back-up (error message: data cannot be published).
I have installed my old original version of 4D from my original bought CDs, but again it will not read the data.
The guy in the Apple shop gave me instructions on how to link my old 'dead' iMac, to my MacBook Pro via a Firewire cable, and using Target Disc Mode, I should be able to access the dead iMac hard drive on my MacBook ... have just tried this and the dead iMac hard drive will not show up on my MacBook.  It does not appear on the desktop as suggested by the guy in the Apple shop, nor does it show up in System Preferences > Start Up Disk as an alternative disc to boot from.
What I need to do is access the 4D database on the dead imac, so that I can export the data as a text file, to put into a new application on my new iMac.
Althought the data is backed up to the external hard drive, it is backed up 'in the database' ...  and I need to EXPORT the data, which I cannot do unless I can open the database ... which I can't !
I'm going round in circles with this, so if anyone can please point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Rock of Ages.

make sure you execute the instructions for target disk mode properly, because your screen is dead and you won't see the icon displayed.
    see here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8443.html
you may have to hold the T longer on the deadhead mac.

  • Intel-iMac Keyboard not working...

So I've had my Intel-iMac for a year and some change now and have had no problems until today when my keyboard stoped working. I have tried plugging into different usb ports but nothing. Each time I plug into a usb port the caps lock light does flash. I've also plugged my roomates keyboard and that keyboard does does work. If anyone can help it would be much appriciated, thanks!

Does your room mate have a mac as well? If so I'd plug your keyboard into his. Sounds like it might be time to get a new keyboard, but it's worth trying it on another machine to make sure that it is definately that the keyboard has died.

  • My Intel imac  won't turn on

Hi! My intel Imac suddenly, and without apparent reason, shut down, and won't turn back on. When I press the power button, sometimes it makes a small noise, but then nothing happens. I have unplugged all the cables, and also tried resetting the SMC, and still nothing. I see some of you have had a similar problem, I don't know if any of you found out the reason why this happens. The computer is almost brand new (I've had it for 3 months) and up until now I had had no problem with it.
    Thank you!
    Nadia

You've (unfortunately) joined the growing list of users that are having problems with their iMac. Mine was purchased in September 2007 and I went through two bad ones before I finally kept one until last week.
Last week: the iMac totally died. It's at the Apple store getting the logic board and PSU replaced. Look through this forum and you'll see a number of other users with random reboots and dead iMacs.

  • AirPort in Intel iMac loses connection and does not see network

I bought an Intel iMac in the summer of '06. I had no problems connecting my airport card to my house wireless network which uses an AirPort Extreme Base Station.
In september I brought my iMac to college and used an AirPort Express as my base station. I had no problems other than that the computer did not automatically reconnect to the network upon start up.
In december I returned home and configured the AirPort Express (located on the main level of the house) to extend the network of the AirPort Extreme (located upstair in the bedroom next to my iMac).
Lately the iMac loses connectivity to the wireless network randomly while the computer is on, even in the middle of using it. Not only does it lose the signal but does not list my network when i click the airport signal icon on the top bar of the screen. Once in a while it will have it listed but will give me an error when trying to connect. The only way I have of fixing the problem is to restart the computer.
I know the airport base station works fine and the network is still there becasue I have a PowerBook G4 that I will put right next to the iMac and the PowerBook will still be connected to the network.
    Can someone help?

I have a very similar problem. My machine's airport connection has always been a little flaky, but it's always gone on working. However, yesterday I turned on WEP 128 bit encription. It now connects for a few minutes and then I see the signal strength gradually die until it goes off completely. There are then two ways to get it back working: 1. close the lid, then open it again; 2. tun off the airport, then turn it on again. When I do that the signal strength suddenly comes on full after about 3 seconds. The G4 iMac I have doesn't suffer from this problem. I am using a netgear access port as the base station.
