Intel imac, viruses, and dwg's

Hello, I am looking to upgrade my G4 imac to a G5 Isight or intel. My questions are 1)will the intel unit allow viruses to interact when running XP programs in XP operating system? 2)Is anyone using any autocad type programs on a mac OS that would read or convert DWG's. Autocad is the only program that I have running that would need XP(or windows). If I can get away from autocad I can stay with a G5 which seems to be better at the current time for speed and performance. Any info would to helpful. Thanks

I haven't found an inexpensive AutoCad alternative for the Mac, at least not one that I liked. Most were expensive, some didn't have features that I use a lot, and one was buggy though it had some nice features I liked. If you just want a viewer, there appear to be some out there (a Google search of osx dwg got me a few links) but I haven't tried them.
I have AutoCad LT 2000 and I run it under Parallels on my Intel iMac with Windows 2000 as the guest system. There is a little bug related to the Acad crosshair and the cursor (often both are there, not just the crosshair) but otherwise it has been working flawlessly for what I do and is very usable, speed-wise. When running it in full-screen mode, it's like I'm using it on a PC. I imagine it would work on a G5 with Microsoft's Virtual PC, though probably too slow to be usable on a day-to-day basis. I also assume that newer and more professional versions of Acad would work with the setup I have, though I can't verify they'd be as speedy.
As a side note, one thing I noticed when checking out emulators was that XP ran much slower than Windows 2000 as a guest operating system. So I stuck with Windows 2000.

  • Question about Intel iMac's and Airport

I'm going to be purchasing an Intel iMac within the next few months and I just want to make sure I have my facts straight about the Airport issues. Is it true that the Airport issues only occur if you're using an Airport base station (do they not occur if you use a third-party base station?). And do you think the issues would affect the speed of my 512k Internet connection? If anyone could post their own experiences, that would be great.

    Hello,
I have been a P.C. user form the beginning of time the VIC 20 to "08088 processor", Windows 1.0 to XP-sp2 and I have made a big change in our life and my family but we are not disappointed but surprised. Make the big step Apple is on the right track and going to be the top. As for your question don't worry.
    My opinion
About your issues, if your are on DSL there are many issues. IMac is not the your problem it would be your provider. For airport no problem, third-party I would choose linksys. My choice for connection is Cable high speed..
    Take care, Bill

  • Can I transfer all my old os 9 fonts to my new intel imac? And if so, how?

Thanks in advance to all who can and will answer this question.
Needless to say I am a total newbie to OSX. Got a intel imac for Christmas (very lucky!!! Nice Santa!!)
Like it states below, I have been using a G4 in os9.2, and I have all these lovely fonts (Adobe and Trutype, etc.) That I am hoping to somehow use. I would hate to think that i have to purchase all new openface versions.
I have extensis fontDoctor 7.3, and rumor has it, it will convert fonts, is this true? And if so, how? And if not, does anyone know if there is an extention or software that will do this. Please Help!!!
Me and my wallet thank you again.

    From the article, I would think that your Postscript fonts should be supported just fine;
Mac OS X delivers industry-leading support for popular font formats:
    • PostScript Type 1 (with double-byte support). Adobe PostScript fonts launched the desktop publishing industry and are used today by publishers, corporations, and government agencies for high-quality output to laser printers, imagesetters, and platesetters. Each PostScript font requires two files, one for the screen and one for use by the printer's RIP (raster image processor). Mac OS X is the only operating system that provides native PostScript Type 1 font support.
    • OpenType. OpenType fonts (extension .otf) can contain 65,000 different glyphs, so type can be set in non-Roman languages such as Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. There are Macintosh- and Windows-specific OpenType formats; Mac OS X supports both.
    • TrueType. TrueType fonts (extension .ttf) are typically used in home and office environments. A single file contains both screen and printer font information. Mac OS X supports both Macintosh- and Windows-specific TrueType formats.
    • Multiple Master. This special type of PostScript font allows variation of one or more font parameters (such as weight) to create a large number of custom styles, also known as instances. Mac OS X can activate already created instances of Multiple Master fonts.
In your case aren't the Bitmap files the screen fonts, so you can wysiwyg the raaster files?
The classic environment still runs on the PowerPC Macs, many of which are also running Mac OS X 4.X. The article was addressed generally to all OS X users.
I have heard of Sheep Shaver to run the Classic OS 9 in emulation, but I gave up OS 9 in late 2001, so I have never needed to explore this option. Some have posted that it didn't work so well.

  • White Intel iMac display and crash fix

My 20" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo had become almost useless due to freezes and crashes- with NO crash reports in the logs.
They were often preceeded by video glitches, so I assumed it was a bad video card- unfortunately soldered to mother board.
Apparently, from forum postings, this is not an uncommon problem. The computer would run longer if the day was cooler, but rarely more than 10 minutes, so I suspected it was aggravated by heat.
Then I found this post from Bodomann on an Apple Support forum:
"Following up on my previous posting regarding my son's late model 2006 iMac that required a $900 logic board replacement:
Turns out the problem is apparently related to a bad CPU temp sensor. I installed 'iMac Fan Control' (Google it) which reported the CPU temp always at 32 degrees Fahrenheit (obviously incorrect). The same software allowed me to adjust the CPU fan manually. After multiple trials I set the CPU speed to 2800RPM after which the system would run forever - never freezing with the dreaded grey box 'reboot me' screen. I tried several times reverting the software to default speeds and the system would always crash within 10 minutes. "
I downloaded free Fan Control 1.2 for Imac from Derman Enterprises (they have an Intel iMac and a Mac Book/Pro version). It installs as a system preferences control panel. I cranked up all three fan speeds. The fans sped up noticeably. Horizontal lines have gone from screen (so far), no color artifacts and no crashes yet. I may have a real computer back! Hope Apple checks this out-
The control panel also gives the temps sensors are reporting at the CPU, hard drive and DVD drive. The CPU sensor reports the CPU temp as 32 degrees F- which is clearly wrong, unless Apple has been installing little refrigerators inside.
So thanks to Bodomann for posting- Hats off and three cheers to Derman and Cristoph for source code.

    http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/index.html

Foregone you have saved my life! I was fed up and disgusted with the way this machine was behaving, always freezing and crashing and with the crazy random horizontal lines. Then I downloaded the Fan Control 1.2 and have had a crash-free, line-less night ever since.
I had tried adding more RAM, cleaning the vents, the old "zap the PRAM" trick from back in the day, even my Mac guru buddy hadn't a clue what to do. After many searches on this forum to try to figure out the line issue (thinking it was a graphics card problem), not even thinking I could ever fix the crashing issue, I stumble upon your post and now I am the savior of the family. My computer game-loving 13 year old boy just about cried with joy. Now his games won't crash all the time!

  • Getting an Intel iMac up and running from G5 software and data

Towards the end of this year I will be updating from a G5 iSight to whatever mid-model new iMac is available. I will be doing this solely because I want to work extensively with HD video. I have spent an hour or so checking these forums for potential problems and have come up with this scenario. I don't need instructions on how to do things, just an indication on whether this process will work, and if not, where the problems will be.
    *INSTALLING OSX*
Install the latest OSX with all security updates to an OSX-only partition of the internal drive of the new machine.
    *INSTALLING SOFTWARE*
    1. Install the Adobe CS5 suite, including Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat and Premiere, though I may choose to use Final Cut instead of Premiere.
    2. Install InDesign CS4. I'm pretty sure it is universal binary, but I'll have to check. I want the CS4 version of InDesign because I have a lot of files in CS4 format and don't want to convert them to InDesign CS5 format – I don't trust the conversion.
    3. Go through every other piece of software I have (including Appleworks, but mostly shareware), and download the latest version, then install that latest version.
    *CONNECTING TO EXTERNAL DRIVES*
All my data files are stored on four external firewire 400 drives (one original, three backups). To continue to use the same disks I will have to purchase a +Firewire 800 (9 pin) to Firewire 400 (6 pin)+ cable for each drive. To use them I will simply plug in the new cables, boot the new machine, and a minute later four external drives should appear on my desktop.
    *CLONING OSX & SOFTWARE*
Use +Disk Utility+ to create a disk image of the entire OSX-only partition, and prepare the disk image for restore ( +Images > Scan Image For Restore+ ).
*RESTORING OSX TO AN EXTERNAL PARTITION*
Use +Disk Utility+ to restore the disk image to an OSX-only partition on an external drive.
    *BOOTING FROM THE EXTERNAL DRIVE*
Set the +Startup Disk+ to the new OSX-only external partition, and restart.
*QUES 1*: Which of the above steps (if any) will be problematic on my new iMac?
*QUES 2*: If I buy a new Firewire 800 external drive and make it the first in the chain, but all the other disks are still 400, does that faster "first link" actually work faster? Or would it somehow be limited by the other "400" links behind it?
*QUES 3*: Maybe I only need to buy one new cable. An 800/400 from the iMac to the first disk; and after that use my existing 400/400 cables. Would that work?

Thanks for the comments, David. I didn't realize you could buy a hub. Which method would result in the fastest overall transfer of data (assuming several of the "400" drives may be being accessed at once): a hub or daisy chain? Or wouldn't there be any difference?
I partition all my drives to have an OSX-only partition and a data partition. That way I can restore OSX if I ever need to (usually takes about 5-10 minutes from a disk image) and I don't have to concern myself about the data. None of my data is ever stored on the OSX partition. I do this because if I'm in the middle of a project, the last thing I want to be involved with is OSX or software hassles. I don't fool around when I have hassles. If OSX or the software plays up, I just restore from a clean OSX.
Reminds me of that old joke. Newly weds are in a horse and carriage on their honeymoon. Horse plays up so the farmer gets out and says" "That's once". Horse does it again a bit down the track and gets told: "That's twice". The third time the farmer gets a gun and shoots the horse. Wife is in shock: "Why did you do that?". The husband responds: "That's once."
Anyway, I treat OSX as the farmer treated his horse – except OSX doesn't get any chances at all. I just put an ailing OSX or software out of its misery and restore. Thus the OSX-only partition.

  • 24" intel iMac Flatlining and Crashing

It started a few weeks ago but has become a regular thing now, the screen has a little fit and lots of multi coloured lines appear across the screen and then the whole computer crashes.
Sometimes a restart will not solve the problem, you have to try it around 3 or 4 times before the gray start up screen appears again. Otherwise you just hear the hard drive running but the screen is not active.
Any ideas? i'm going to phone up apple just thought i'd check first.

It's under warranty so I would take it in to the service center and have them fix it. Could be a bad video card.

  • Help with re-starting my intel imac after 10.4.6 installation?

    Hey guys,
I am a UK intel imac user and I have a problem. I upgraded to 10.4.6 via software update this morning and everything seemed to be loading OK. On returning to the computer 5 minutes later I discovered an error message saying that update had failed. I then looked at the version tab under 'About this Mac' and it said 10.4.6. I then thought the best thing to do was simply re-boot. I now have a DOS screen with the following:
    Darwin/BSD (JOnathan-Baileys-Computer--2.loc) (Console)
    Login:
I have tried simply re-booting again as well as typing in my user ID and password to no avail? On typing in my user ID etc I get a blue start up screen and then I get the DOS screen again.
    Any suggestions?
Incidently I forgot to remove my Audio Interface from the Firewire connection is this what probably caused the machine to throw a major tantrum?
    Any help would be appreciated
    Jon Bailey (UK)

    Hi boxlight,
No, you are not the first to mention the issues you are now experiencing with the 10.4.8 update...
Here's what I would try: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateintel.html - you can run the Combo Update and see if that "fixes" any issues. There have been posts re: using the Combo Update which ended up fixing some software glitches...
You can also go here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html#Anchor-Manually-49575 - I use the Terminal method to run the Maintenance Scripts and my Mac runs better than new...

  • My Intel imac  won't turn on

Hi! My intel Imac suddenly, and without apparent reason, shut down, and won't turn back on. When I press the power button, sometimes it makes a small noise, but then nothing happens. I have unplugged all the cables, and also tried resetting the SMC, and still nothing. I see some of you have had a similar problem, I don't know if any of you found out the reason why this happens. The computer is almost brand new (I've had it for 3 months) and up until now I had had no problem with it.
    Thank you!
    Nadia

You've (unfortunately) joined the growing list of users that are having problems with their iMac. Mine was purchased in September 2007 and I went through two bad ones before I finally kept one until last week.
Last week: the iMac totally died. It's at the Apple store getting the logic board and PSU replaced. Look through this forum and you'll see a number of other users with random reboots and dead iMacs.

  • No software update on Intel iMac?

    Hi all,
Just got a new Intel iMac 20" and installed DVD Studio Pro 4 from the original DVD. Wanted to upgrade to 4.0.3 via Software Update but it doesn't show a single update available, not for Compressor, not Pro Runtime etc...
Is this because it's an Intel iMac? Will there be other updates or do I have to wait for a universal binary version? Is DVDSP not officially supported on Intel?

Without actually having an Intel mac to hand I can't be sure - but can you not go to the Apple website and manually download the update?

  • EFI password SET + bootcamp removed: my intel iMAC wont boot...

With my new (and first) iMAC (i think) I have done the two thinghs that made the sistem crash...
    Here's the detail:
    1. I've installed boot camp and try to install windows. But the I say "iMAC is for MAC OSX, and not for windows".
So, I reload boot camp and removed the partition of windows (the OSX partition regain it's original size)
    2. Meanwhile, I've launched Open firmware password (function of a power PC iMAC, founded in an intel iMAC!) and I set a password! I remeber this password (useful if someone can help me)
So, when I reboot, a flashing question mark inside a folder appear for my happyness! :< (the HD index is probably gone...)
With the EFI (the name of the open firmare interface on Intel iMAC) password active, I cannot boot from CD or DVD!!
So i cannot use the original DVD 1 to help me...
Reading the internet seems that apple doesn't provide any procedure to unlock this situation...
PLEASE!! What I have to do?
    Thank
    Mauro

    Solved!!!!
I remove 1 bank of memory, and the PC boot in Mac os X
So I removed the password from efi.

  • IMAC 20" intel - System freezes and screen goes blue - why??

this just started yesterday - I did not add any programs or update any software recently. I have since added Norton and scanned for viruses.
PROBLEM: my system freezes and the screen goes blue. It does not "wake" back up right away and after it goes blue a few times, it stays blue and I have to hard boot. If I leave the system off for about an hour, I'll get a few hours out of it before this happens.
DIAG: As stated above, I checked for viruses. I also ran all available diagnostics, and am fresh out of new ideas. Since I can't open my iMac without voiding the warrantee, I can't check for any possible burst or bulging capacitors. I disconnected all perperials and still have the same issue.
HYPOTHESIS: I am heavily leaning toward a hardware problem, but before I take the trip to the Apple store, I wanted to reach out to the forum to see if anyone else has had this problem?
This is an early 2006 Intel based 20" iMac that I have been running (24x7) since late August 2006. I never had an issue with my first iMac (pre-Intel).

  • Emagic mt4 and intel iMac does not work with 10.4.5

    Hi there,
after updating my iMac on 10.4.5 my MT4 does not work any longer. It is still shown in the system profiler! But that`s it! After I`ve installed the latest driver (emagic v1.7), it was not shown in the audio/midi preferences. On my G4 with 10.3.9 it is still working properly. I have tried to use it with Garage Band 3, while I am waiting for Logic Pro 7.2 . It worked in the begining, but now the USB connection on the MT4 does not light up, but the midi devices. My question is: Do I need a driver using Logic Pro 7.2 with an Intel iMac? Includes the update the driver for Emagic MT4?
thanks a lot for any reply, experiences and clues
