Intel iMac: Wanting to add more internal HDD & More RAM

Well i'm interested but it seems opening my iMac is a bit scary :/ Also i have no idea IF there is room inside for more add ons. Maybe the HDD might have to be external but the RAM i need.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, as maybe you've done this yourself before? Would be much appreciated!
Here is my info
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz

Hi Matt
The early white Intel iMac's are one of the hardest models to work on and it is real easy to damage other components and cables in the process. If your Internal HD is working fine, it might be best to let it be and pickup a USB/FireWire or Quad Interface External HD.

Ram is user upgradeable and can be accessed under the center cover on the bottom of the iMac.

The maximum amount of ram you can install in the Late 2006 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo is 2 matching 2GB modules, but that system only supports 3GB and can not be upgraded to use more.

  • Imac 27" 10.6.8 Internal HDD to boot on OSX Mountain Lion

I have a internal HDD which was on my IMac 27" with OS 10.6.8. The logic board has apparent passed on and I needed the data on the internal drive.
Is it possible to boot that drive / or see the data on a Macbook Pro - Mountain Lion?

Yes you will have to remove the drive and get an enclosure or dock for it so you can connect it to the other system.
You won't boot off of it but boot off your regular drive and mount this as an eternal drive. The will be readable (assuming it has not been damaged when the system died).

  • Want to add internal hard drive to my Mac Pro

I want to add an internal hard drive to my Mac Pro bought in 2011
Running Lion 10.7.5  Processor is 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    Have a 1TB SATA
Do I need a 2.5" or 3.5" ? Any other criteria i should know about when looking?
    Advice is appreciated.

For a Mac Pro you'll probably want to go with a 3.5" drive. I would recommend Hitachi. I put a 2.5" new model Hitachi in my laptop along with an SSD and the Hitachi HD is unbelievably fast for a "spinner." If that's how there 2.5" models are there 3.5" models will only be better.
Make sure none of the drives you use have a variable rotational speed. Some of the Western Digital Green drives have that and they go to sleep a lot. When they sleep they have to wake up and when they wake up it causes a delay. It won't happen if the drives in constant use but it can be annoying. I believe the Green drives are intended primarily for backup use where speed isn't critical but energy savings and longevity are.
These are my opinions and observations.

  • Intel iMac's HD not recognized by Leopard Installer

I am trying to install Leopard on an Intel iMac dual core 1.8 MHz, 2 GB RAM. It seems to be running Tiger 10.4.11 just fine. I have successfully updated both a MacPro and MacBook Pro with the same DVD disc. When I start the install process, I get as far as the screen to select my iMac's internal HD and it never appears. If open Leopard's Disk Utility, it sees the HD icon, but not the volume. When I reboot from the Tiger install, the Disk Utility sees it verifies the HD and all permissions are fine.
There's plenty of space left on the HD (90+ GB) out of 240 GB. I am stumped. Suggestions welcome.

Hi! See if THIS helps. Tom

  • Intel iMac capable of 4GB of RAM?

Apple's iMac spec sheet clearly states that the Intel iMac Core Duo supports upto 2GB of DDR RAM.
However, when attempting to purchase RAM through the Apple Store (not that I would, not at those prices) Apple gives you the option of purchasing a 2GB DIMM?
An oversight by them, or is the new Intel iMac capable or supporting 4GB of RAM?
    MM

    Good spot.
I was obviously far too excited by the prospect of
    4GB in an iMac!
    Thanks for clearing that up.
There will remain the potential for the iMac to support 4GB so getting excited is okay (I have a number of Macs running beyond their "max" as the stated limit was based around what was available at the time). Unfortunately, 2GB DIMMS are very expensive (and for the new Intel iMac either rare or non existant yet). IF and when they become widely available and affordable, it may be better replacing the computer with something new!

  • As I was installing the Windows 7 on my Imac and stated how I wanted to divide the drive I put 160, but I want to add more space how can I can the drive space to from 160 to 250? please help thank you.

As I was installing the Windows 7 on my Imacwith the bootcamp  and stated how I wanted to divide the drive I put 160,  but I want to add more space because of the adobe software it will not install two of them, so how can I add more on the drive space to from 160 to 250? please help thank you.

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for, but it might help:
"If you made the Windows partition too small
First, back up all the information on your Windows partition. Then run Boot Camp
Assistant to restore your disk to a single volume. Restart your computer and use Boot
Camp Assistant to partition the disk again and reinstall Windows. Don’t forget to install
the Boot Camp drivers after installing Windows."

  • Should I upgrade the internal hdd on my 2008 8.1 iMac or use an external drive?

I have an external hdd right now it is a 500gb go seagate goflex with a number of iTunes folders that I put on from my windows pc. I just received this 2008 2.4ghz core 2 duo 8.1 iMac and tried to import the files. The internal hdd is only 250gb so they would not fit, when I tried to get iTunes to run from the external drive it would but I would have to manually open each artist then album then song I wanted in the Finder for it to play. The songs do not show up automatically in iTunes, even though I think I followed all of the instructions for external hdd support. I was going to buy a new iMac and have the genius set it up, but now I think I am going to upgrade the RAM myself and am deciding wether or not I should also replace the internal hdd to 2TB or just get an external hdd so when I get a new iMac, maybe next year, I could still use it. However, I don't want to get another, larger external hdd if I'm going to have a hard time transferring all of my media to iTunes. Can I pay to have an apple genius do this at the store? I just upgraded the operating system to Snow Leopard and am waiting to upgrade RAM before moving to Mountain Lion. I just want my iTunes to sync up, at this point I will do just about anything, short of buying a new Mac. Thanks for any help.

You can keep your iTunes collection on an external drive.  You can also keep just bulky items that you may not want to see often such as movies and just keep smaller items on the internal drive.  This split option is more tricky but there are several ways to do it.
If all you have is a modest music collection, you can manage with an internal drive.  Most modern media collections with huge movies files fast outpace even larger internal hard drives and you will have to resort to an external drive.  Your computer dating from 2008 is (according to Apple's coproration standards) on its way to becoming a museum piece (hey, I still use a 10 year old computer, but Apple gave up hope for me years ago).  I would not upgrade the internal drive.   That will cost you a lot  and be tricky to take with you to your next computer. An external drive you can just plug into a new computer.
Some of the issues you are encountering are because you do not yet know how to properly manage and transfer iTunes files.  We can help you, or you can pay somebody a lot of money to do this for you on a regular basis.
Your GoFlex drive was used with Windows. Macs and Windows use different drive formats.  If you are now using Mac-only then you will need to reformat the drive (you will need to store all those files elsewhere while you are doing this).
Do not buy just one external drive.  When that drive fails (oh, and believe me, it will) your whole collection will be lost.  Some of it you may be able to download again from Apple, but Apple does not "store" your iTunes collection, it is up to you to ensure its safety.

  • How I "recovered" my internal HD on Intel Imac

So I've been plugging away for a straight 20 hours on trying to recover / repair my internal HD on my Intel Imac and all the suggested utilities / methods I found on the internet / apple discussions were not working:  TechTool, Diskwarrior, Data Rescue, SuperDuper, DiskDrill, and even TestDisk.  I had been working on it using the Imac in Target Mode via Firewire.  Occasionally in terminal I would see the partion (always saw the disk), see files, etc.  But I could never mount the drive or get any of the utilities to recover files or rebuild the volume.
I was losing a lot of hope of getting anything back but my last idea to work the machine worked to get all my files back.  Here is what I did:
Inserted the OS X installer DVD into the "dead drive" iMac, set it as startup disk, attached a 1TB USB drive and started up from the CD.
I then installed the OS onto the USB drive attached to said "dead" iMac.  Restarted iMac with USB drive attached, held down OPTION to select the external USB to start from and went thru the apple 'welcome' screens etc.  Then, when the first time startup install asked if I wanted to migrate files/apps to the new OS, I selected each of the items there.  Each category showed up correctly and calculated file sizes correctly.  Clicked next and the assistant began copying all the files to the new drive.
So I'm sure this won't necessarily work for everyone as it would depend on the type of failure you had, but it is one which I did not come across anywhere (and I searched hours online for ideas) but if it at least works for 1 other person out there with a Mac in distress, my sharing was worth the time!
And for the back story as to how my drive failed, I was in Firefox and suddently the dreaded beachball showed up.  It stayed there spinning and unresponsive for nearly 20 minutes.  Could not force quite, cancel, etc.  I did the dreaded hard restart via the power on button and that was the beginning of the end.
Upon next restart, I had the grey screen for a while then the CPU shut down automatically. Immediately got into Single User mode and tried to fsck via command line and it would not work and so on down the line with all the above mentioned utilities.
Hopefully this may help someone at some point!

Have you noticed this forum is all about workstations? doesn't hurt or matter just might want to check Mac OS and iMac Communities.

  • Why won't my Intel iMac boot up, either from the internal hard drive or the DVD drive? It just displays a light grey screen, without any other icons, etc. The fact that it won't boot from the original system DVD is what baffles me the most. Any ideas?

It uses the latest version of Mavericks. Thanks!

If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.
see > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.
For more on gray screen, see > Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • Want to add  more than 16 key fields in the DSO?

    Dear All,
All the 16 Key fields are being used in my DSO,i want to add  two more key fields in the same DSO.
Can any one provide the way how to go ahead
    Regards,
    Sarasu

    Hi,
You can create a maximum of 16 key fields. If you have more key fields, you can merge (concatenate) fields into one key field using a routine.
    Hope it Helps...

Try using RecBoot to kick it out of recovery mode. If that does not work, try a manual install, as outlined in link below. If it STILL keeps entering recovery mode, you most likely need a new logic board.

  • How can I access my old iphoto libary on my newer laptop? I have a new iphoto folder on my laptop so I don't want to lose my current photos. I just want to add more.

How can I access my old iphoto libary on my newer laptop?
I have a new iphoto folder on my laptop so I don't want to lose my current photos. I just want to add more.

    Do the following:
rename the old library to something other that iPhoto Library.
copy the library to the Pictures folder on your new laptop.
launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select the old library to open it and convert it to the newer version.
Note:  if the older version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on it before opening with iPhoto on your new laptop.
If you want to merge the two libraries into one library and keep the edited versions, keywords, titles, etc. you'll need to use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to do the merging.
