Intel iMac won't start up after update of OS... anyone w/similar prob?

Help! I recently did installs through "software update" and now my iMac won't go beyond the flat blue screen. To be more specific, it starts up, takes a long time on the grey screen with the rotating pinned circle and apple logo, then stays on the flat blue screen forever. I can move the mouse but nothing else happens.
I'm trying to remember what the software update installed... I think it was the most recent security update, iDVD, iMovie, iPhoto and Quicktime update.
I'd appreciate any advice or experiences you can offer. Thanks in advance.

Hi, hajime7. Welcome to the Discussions.
1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
2. An errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
FYI: Before installing software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems.
Good luck!

  • Intel iMac won't start - HELP!

My iMac won't start this morning. I get the white screen with the grey apple,
and the swirling progress thing, then after a few seconds I can hear
the sound you hear when the system shuts down. like a soft switch
going off, then it just continues swirling, still with the white
screen and grey apple, then it restarts by itself. Then we go through
the same routine. Tried booting up by holding C with the Leopard disc inside but nothing happens.I have just reinstalled Leopard as Snow Leopard left too many printers and programs lifeless, so I did an erase and install a few days ago. Since then I have used the Mac fine, switched down normally last night, but this morning it doesn't want to play.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in anticipation

Have you reset PRAM and SMC?
    Do this first
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and then do this, if the PRAM does not help
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
The second one is basically disconnecting your iMac from power (and all cables), then reconnecting following a precise procedure.
If that does not help, I would restart with the Snow Leopard installation disc (insert disc and start up with the C key held down). You probably did an installation of Snow Leopard over your existing Leopard system the first time. This time, erase it completely first, then install Snow Leopard. I assume you backed up your data already.
When you get to the Installer screen (after selecting language), go up to the menu bar. Under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility. In the sidebar, select the internal DRIVE, not the volume indented under the drive. Go to the Erase tab. Name the volume +Macintosh HD+ and set the format to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+. Erase the drive. Since you have the drive selected in the sidebar (not the volume), it will also re-partition the drive.
It should take less than on minute to complete the process. Quit Disk Utility to go back to Installer. Run the standard installation onto the blank internal drive. Hopefully, a fresh Snow Leopard install on a reformatted/re-partitioned drive will work better for you.

  • Intel Imac Won't Start Up

Hello all, this is my first post here. Any help gratefully received!
My Intel Core Duo Imac (bought march 2006) is having some recurring problems with starting up (and sometimes awaking from sleep). It's a 17" Rev A, 1.83GHZ, 160GB, with an extra 512mb of Ram added by me, running OSX 10.4.8.
It has worked without problems for nearly a year but recently it just wouldn't start up. The power light would come on at the front of the machine, and just stay on with a blank/black screen for as long as I left it, until I force shut it down by holding the power button for 5 seconds.
I can keep going through this process in the hope that it will eventually start ok on its own, but it never does. When I take the ram stick out that I added about 9 months ago it will then start up ok. I can then put the ram back in and it will work ok for another few weeks before going weird again. In System Profiler it says that both Ram sticks are ok. So I'm not sure if it's bad Ram, and removing it makes the system work ok, or if just the act of removing Ram helps to get it going through the start-up process ok.
I have done all firmware updates for Rev.A Intel Imacs. Though I only did the IFE firmware update recently after the problem started in the hope that it would help. Before I did the firmware update and was trying to sort it out it once got a grey screen and made a high pitched electronic sound, as well as not starting up and just getting a black screen
I've also done a complete clean install of the OS, re-formatting the hard disk first. The machine worked fine for about a day after this but then I had to resort to removing the Ram again to get it to start up ok. So at the moment I'm running ok for a couple of days on the original 512mb module
Has anyone else experienced this or similar problems with their Intel Imacs?
Can bad Ram work sometimes and then act up?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
My advice would be to contact AppleCare now. As you have only days left on your included AppleCare best to start the ball rolling now.
Cheap RAM can manifest all kinds of issues, so running without it in the meantime may be a way head. What brand/spec is the RAM?

  • Intel iMac - won't start - grey screen & progress bar

I have a 2006 Intel iMac - 20" model, Intel Core Duo, 2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, etc.  It was one of the very earliest Intel iMacs.  Kept updated, running OS 10.6, etc.
It has worked extremely well for over 5 years - apart from the Superdrive being temperamental sometimes - but has suddenly gone wrong.
Last week the machine completely froze for no apparent reason.  I had to force a reboot.  This failed - grey screen and the grey spinning wheel (if that's what it's called), indefinitely.
Forced reboot again and this time held down the shift key to go into safe boot mode.  This time it was successful, and I was able to get to the logon screen & log myself in.  I opened Disk Utility & attempted to do some diagnostics but the machine froze again.
Looking around various other forum postings...I rebooted the machine in single user mode and was able to get to the command line to type 'fsck -fy' to attempt to fix disk problems.  This failed repeatedly, with an error message 'invalid node structure'.
I tried to boot my machine from the OS X disc but my Superdrive refused to play ball - it would not read the disc (or any other disc for that matter, including a copy of DiskWarrior that I have).
I have now got hold of an external DVD drive in the hope that this would show up as a boot device when I switch the machine on while holding the option key down.  No such luck - the drive powers up ok (power via USB) but I'm not given the option to boot from it - in fact that screen doesn't appear at all.
All that happens now on powering up - regardless of what I do - is the grey apple symbol appears and a progress bar beneath it.  The progress bar gets stuck about 5% of the way along, and then after about 10 minutes it disappears and is replaced with the grey spinning wheel thingy.  And then it just gets stuck - nothing else happens.
    HELP!
All my important data is backed up on an external drive via Time Machine, so that should be safe, but I'm desperate to get the machine running again.
One thing that occurred to me is that I've had a program called ReFit installed on the machine which allowed me to run the machine as dual boot etc. (and I do have a couple of other small partitions on the drive, not currently used) but the ReFit welcome screen stopped appearing a couple of weeks ago for some reason.  I'm wondering if this has somehow messed things up...?
    Grateful for any suggestions...
    Thanks,
    Alan.

For the drive, you should be OK with any SATA 2 at 3 MB/s transfer speed. You could also use a SATA 1, no jumpers needed. (Not SATA 3 - can't be jumpered down.) The early 2006 Intels were 1.5 MB/s -- at least the drives were, so I'm assuming the SATA controller on the logic board was also. Might just be SATA 2 hadn't yet been introduced and can run the faster SATA 3 without jumpers. My guess is not. You should be able to set jumpers on the drive for backwards compatibility. You'll have to contact the drive manufacturer or go to their website for that info.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-20-inch-sp ecs.html
As for the superdrive, I'd contact the manufacturer to check on compatibility.
Glad I'm able to help. BTW, in case you haven't noticed, maybe you want to have a look here.

  • BB z10 won't start up after updating to bb link

I accidentally dropped my phone on the floor, and it won't start up.
here are the following steps that i already did:
    1. I already tried to update it on the bb link, after successfully updating i remove the usb cable, however  it didn't start up. everytime i try  to do a hard reset it automatically turns off, even when im seeing the blackberry logo on the screen. it goes off again.
    2. i tried also to charge it first and then the blackberry name appears on the screen  it will also automatically turns off and after that it will charge only and then again the blackberry name appears on the screen same thing happen again.
    3. I tried to uninstall the bb link to my computer and install again the bb link then update it again, after the successful update. still no changes happen
    4. I also tried to update the bb z10 os, in a hard way through internet explorer, nothing change still won't start up.
There's one thing that i've noticed everytime I plug the usb cable on my phone, through the computer and access the bb link, it will connect and then it will disconnect it goes on and on, as i seen on the screen. I updated the usb cable plugging in,thinking that can fix the problem but still nothing change.
I know that my bb z10 works fine up to now, because there is an instant that the bb logo appears on the screen completed loading and i can navigate it for a while like changing the language and connecting to a wifi, and the logo of my sim card appears on the screen, however it will take few seconds only, and then it will turn again to the same situation that occurs on my phone.
Please help me find a good solution regarding on my phone problem.

Since this occurred right after dropping your device it's probably damaged internally. Not much we can do here for that.

    1.83 Intel Core Duo 17" inch - 512 RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

This problem occurred with my first iMac 20", albeit while I was using iDVD. When you turn on your computer, does it make a sound? Mine almost sounded like it was "groaning," you could hear the hard drive spinning and the processor starting up, but the screen stayed black. Tried all the different combinations also, and then got on the phone with AppleCare. Apple replaced my iMac as I had only had it a little over a week, citing a "hardware problem."
For you Apple probably won't replace the iMac (they told me they only do it within 14 days of purchase), but I would suggest you contact your local Apple Store/Apple Center/Apple Authorized Service Provider for reapir options if the symptoms you have are the same as mine.

You need to reinstall as iPhoto is missing bits of itself.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • OS won't start up after Update

    Hi -
Not sure if this problem is unique to my Mac Book Pro or to OS 10.4.9.
Last week Software Updater asked me to install a few updates and restart. I did - during the download and install, I got an error message for one of the several updates - sorry I can't remember which it was now. I opted to restart the computer then as that's what it seemed to want to do. Since then it will not restart. I power on the machine and the grey screen with the Apple icon and the little spinning circle comes up, and this stays like so indefinitely. I have turned off the power and restarted to no avail. I was able to start up from my OS install disk, verified the disk and disk permissions with the Utility to no avail.
What should I do next? Reinstall OS? Is this likely to cause me to lose much data on the disk?
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

    try an archive and install.

    good luck!

hi xs4is, thanks for the reply
No, that's not the problem, I mean it installs perfectly from the DVD -- no errors, no indication of any problems whatsoever, however when I double click the app to start logic up, instead of starting up I get the error message: The Application Logic Pro has unexpectedly quit. What would you like to do: Close, Reopen, blah blah, not even a splash screen shows up. nothing. I am using Onyx on a regular basis and have been running all cleanup and optimization scripts in it. didn't help at all. And I really don't want to create a second user on my machine -- it's only my machine, nobody else uses it, and I have only had problems with multipe users in the past (especially with authorizations and stuff), but I also don't think it has anything to do with accounts

  • MacBook Pro won't start up after update

I just updated my MacBook last night and now when I turn it on it gets to the grey apple screen and shuts down.

    Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    Try a normal boot.
    Perform a Safe Boot:  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204?viewlocale=en_US
Try a normal boot.  If it boots reliably with a Safe Boot but not a normal boot then it is probably a software issue.  Post back for more instructions.
If you do not have a recent backup create one in case your disk is failing.  (Post back if you need instructions on how to do that w/o booting OS X.)
Boot in Recovery Mode.  (Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.  If you are running 10.6 or earlier boot from an installation disk.)  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left system disk icon.  Does S.M.A.R.T. report “Verified”?
If it does not say “Verified” then the disk or the disk cable is failing and will need to be replaced.  As noted above, if it is failing the first priority is to back it up. Post back for more instructions for emergency data recovery and replacing the disk or its cable.
If the S.M.A.R.T. status is “Verified” then repair the disk.  Click on the icon underneath and indented to the right, usually called “Macintosh HD”.  Repair Disk.  It should finish normally with a green OK message.  If it does not try to repair it again.
If it will not finish with a green OK message then having a backup is again essential.  The remedy is a clean install:  backup, reformat the drive (erasing all the data), reinstall OS X, and then restore form the backup.  (Post back if you need instructions on how to do any of those steps.)
If it repaired all errors (green OK) and is still not booting normally “Macintosh HD” icon again and Repair Permissions.  Ignore the numerous messages in black.  It should finish with a green OK message.  If not, run it again.
Once you have repaired the disk and the disk permissions, if it will not boot properly, reinstall OS X:
Boot in Recovery Mode and then install OS X.
If it is still not booting normally after the reinstall then, as a last resort, perform a clean install.  Make sure you have a current backup (Time Machine or a clone).  Boot in Recovery Mode.  Use disk utility to erase the system disk (deleting all data).  In the Erase tab click on Security Options… Select “writes a single pass of zeros.”  This will write to every block on the disk, mapping out bad blocks.  Install OS X.  Reload your data from the backup.  (On the first boot the Migration Assistant should as you to restore from your backup.)

  • MacBook won't start up after update

Last night I updated my MacBook and now it will not turn on past the White screan with the grey apple logo.
I reset the PRAM an the PMU, held down the D key an tested for hardware problems and nothing has helped.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated as I am working on an important project on my laptop.
    Thanks in advance, Hannah.

put you the mac os x cd in the drive and when you start up the system press the C letter and hold it until it is loaded with the cd then find the open disk utility option from the utillities section on the top bar then try to verify the permissions and repair them this should work and bring up the os

  • E63 won't start up after updating software update....

    hi,
it's my first time to connect my e63 to my PC using usb cable..Through Nokia PC Suite, i have updated my cellphone for new softwares. during the process like,Back up and installation went well until such time that my e63 shut off and the PC prompts that there was an error occured.
Since then my cellphone wont start up anymore though the battery is fully charged.
    Help please..
    ann

Did you wait when the Phone got switched OFF to see if it starts again ( sometimes it takes 2-3 minutes for the phone to switch ON)  ? During the Update, the phone switches OFF and ON on its own a no. of times. A message in this regard is displayed when you start the Update process, which also says to neglect all errors getting displayed on your PC about the phone being disconnected.
You may have a look at THIS resource. If nothing works, you need to visit Nokia Care.

  • My iMac won't start up after a storm...

We have our computer plugged into a surge protector, but we didn't have the DSL run through the surge protector...didn't realize you were supposed to.
I started the computer up after the storm and it came on, but never got past the blue start-up screen. I tried to turn it off, but it wouldn't...so I flipped the surge protector to turn it off. It will not come back on now...no fan noises or anything. What now? :/

Confused: you turned the surge protector off and then tried restarting still running through the surge protector, after turning the surge protector back on? Is the protected light, or whatever it's called, still on when you turn on the surge protector? Can you start up if you plug the Mac directly into wall power, not using the surge protector? The surge protector may have been fried.
Generally, unless it's a direct hit, a surge might fry the DSL modem and not go any further. If it was such a powerful hit, then I doubt that running the DSL line through the surge protector would have stopped it, anyway, No surge protector will stop a direct or very close hit, either through the AC or the phone line.
And DSL and phone line surge protection may not play very well together, unless the protector is specifically designed for DSL.
Best during serious lightning is to unplug the phone line from the wall jack and the surge protector powering the computer.

  • Macbook won't start up after updates.

I installed some software updates yesterday inlcuding Itunes 10.5, Safari and some other things. But once it tried to restart all I got was a black screen and a constant whirring noise. I left it for a while but nothing happened, occasionally it flickered for a split second.
I held down the power button and restarted it and it worked but would shut down everytime I lowered the lid. Then I put it to sleep manually and when I tried to use it, the black screen and whirring noises came back and it's still like that. I'm not sure what to do, help?
Fairly new Macbook Pro 13'' purchased in about April this year

    Another victim!
Try booting up from the install disc (insert and hold down C), then run disk utility and and check your drive for errors, and then if possible try fixing them.
This didn't work for me, however after deleting my hard drive and repeating the above procedure no errors were found, and after a reinstallation of OSX my computer is working although extremely slow.
As for recovering your data I'm not sure. So far I haven't heard of it being done, although I have heard of new hard drives needing to be purchased.
Good luck. And spread the word!

  • My macbook pro won't start up after updating it

I Have a macbook pro with Mavericks (I don't remember exactly which one) which I bought in 2012, yesterday night I updated it and it restarted but it took forever and I thought it was installing something, so I left it like that all night and day and is still in the gray screen with the apple logo and the wait spiral. I got worried so I entered the disk utility option and checked the disk, and it said everything was Ok. When I restarted it again, the gray screen never left so I tried with the "safe rebooting" ctrl + cmnd + V and the screen shows now endless rows of "disk0s2: 1/0 error."  and it's been like this for about half an hour now, I'm really worried I'll my data.

An 1/O error cannot be repaired by Disk Utiity.
That requires a more robust disk utility such as DiskWarrior
You can contact the developer using their email address here.
Best to get their recommendation before purchasing.
Hopefully you have a backup  to restore from once the drive is either repaired or replaced.
