Intel KMS... Finaly useful

After the 2.6.31 kernel and xf86-video-intel 2.9 kms performance is finaly on par with performace of xf86-video-intel 2.7 with EXA on GEM kernel. And also the system is much more stable, no more hardlocks, it's intel's finaly done something 'bout those.
The only bad thing for now is that with KMS enabled lower resolutions (my native is 1280x800) that use different aspect ratio (for example 1024x768) stretch the screen, instead of using two sidelines of 133 pixels)
Anyone know how to fix that.
p.s. Finaly able to use kwin4 compositing, without receiving an immediate hardlock.

Well... I've been getting hardlocks and kernel panics quite frequently on my notebook... Tested with dell test system for sytem errors for several hours and nothing came up so I'm living with them...
I was getting a weekly kernel panic and 3 dayly hardlock, however no hardlocks since using KMS so that's why I said a step in the right direction xd

  • Intel KMS with live usb boot

Hey. I've KMS (early start) working perfectly on an older 82845 card with all the newest updates to core (2.6.32, etc) and xf86-video-intel. However, using a larch bootable flash drive with all the same packages, I can't get KMS to engage -- early OR late start.
Is there something different about the speed or ??? with a flash drive boot?  I've been careful to ensure the .img file created from mkinitcpio had the correct hooks and the 'intel_agp i915' modules. I added the 'i915.modeset=1' to the kernel line in grub. It still boots fine with the new .img file, it just won't start KMS. Would be nice to have KMS, because there is substantial display corruption that occurs when I switch virtual terminals without KMS.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I have an early 2006 intel iMac and am having the same problem with the new keyboard. Called AppleCare, who sent me to the local Apple Store after trying several minutes in vain to cure the problem.
One of the Genius's at the Apple Store pulled up Article 306893, Apple Keyboard (2007): Cannot boot to Startup Manager. This is a document that's apparently not available to the public, as I have the printed copy, but have been unable to pull it up in my searches.
The issue is some intel-based iMacs and Mac mini computers shipped prior to 2007 may not boot to the Startup Manager when holding down the Option key on the aluminum keyboard (2007).
My iMac is listed among the products affected.
The solution they offer is to follow these steps:
    1. While starting the computer, point the Apple remote at the computer and hold down the Menu button. The computer should boot into the Startup manager.
    2. Use the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons to select the desired boot volume.
    3. Once the desired boot volume is selected, press the Play / Pause button to continue booting.
Hope this helps. It works for my system. Still doesn't solve the keyboard issue but offers an acceptable workaround.

  • Intel KMS + mplayer with .32 kernel

    Hi
Just want to mention that with the new 2.6.32 kernel from [testing] mplayer works again in framebuffer with intel KMS
I have a 915 GM chipset and was not able to watch a movie in tty for months (since I switched to KMS). Just use it with -vo fbdev2.

Wow, this is great. Last time I tried was with 2-6.32-rc8 and it didn.t work. Glad they managed to fix it before releasing -final.

  • [solved] intel, kms, where's my arch boot logo(s)?

I have an intel card (Intel 945GME Chipset, netbook) with KMS enabled, and I lost the boot logos after enabling KMS. Is there a way to get it (them) back? Searching the forums gives a lot of "I want logo" and "I don't want logo" posts, some that try to get the tux logo in there (which would be nice, but offtopic to me), and one post that mentions that the logo disappears when kms is used on intel cards, but that was all.
    thanks

I have the same problem, but a radeon.
How do I configure the kernel to compile the radeon driver into the kernel.
    grep -i radeon /boot/kconfig
    CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m
    CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=y
    # CONFIG_FB_RADEON is not set
in menuconfig it's not possible to mark CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y only as module.
Does it work if I set it to "y" with a texteditor?
    EDIT:
radeon wiki wrote:A radeon kernel-module gives more flexibility (e.g. debug), for built-in solution change CONFIG_DRM_RADEON from "=m" to "=y".
    http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonBuildHowTo# … radeon-KMS
    I will try it.
    EDIT_2:
It wasn't possible to select DRM_RADEON=y because AGP was selected as module.
    EDIT_3:
    it works.

  • Install 10.6.8 over Tiger Intel to Continue Using Sophos

I am currently using Sophos for Mac Free Edition 8.0.21C on my iMac Ma200LL/A Core Duo 2gigs, 2gigs of ram. As of April 2014 Sophos will only support 10.6.8 + above with version 9. No new virus definitions will be available, but I can continue to scan my computer for existing definitions. I still enjoy using Tiger Intel, fulfills all my requirements, runs very fast on my iMac Core Duo. As an alternative shall I think about using ClamXav 2.2.1 the last version for Tiger Intel that still offers the newest virus definitions as well as current system scanning. I think Sophos is the best because of its reputation in the enterprise sector. Or might it be time to install 10.6.8 over Tiger Intel, then continue using Sophos to be optimally safe on the internet? Thanks, Ken.

    Ken Kline wrote:

I guess I'm a bit confused by what you mean by support.
I'm sure you realize that Apple hasn't supported it since Sep 2009 and there won't be any software updates beyond ClamXav 2.2.1. The scan engine will continue to work and could possibly be updated by you with some degree of difficulty. The signature updates are the only thing that will continue and there are even plans to improve the OS X coverage that is TBD. The only danger is that the ClamAV® folks did disable engine 0.94 back in 2009 with no warning, so hopefully that won't happen again.

  • Disabling vsync when ati kms is used?

Is there a way to disable the vsync when KMS is used?

KMS is enabled by default for a while now. Anyway, I've found the solution. Apparently vsync is hardcoded into the driver, so if you want to disable it you need the following patch:

  • Kernel 2.6.32.2-2 black screen after closing laptop lid (intel + KMS)

Today I updated my laptop with the new 2.6.32.2-2 kernel from core. Previous update of my system was just a few days back, so there are no massive changes to other packages and I also don't use testing packages.
Since the update, after closing the laptop lid (which just blanks my screen) and I want to continue working I just have a black screen (no backlight) and the screen won't respond to mouse or keyboard input. I have to reboot (ctr-alt-del or pushing my power button) or switch to VT1 and back to VT7 to get my screen back. I'm absolutely positive that this was not a problem before, it worked fine with 2.6.30 and 2.6.31 kernels with my same configuration.
    HP 6730b laptop
Intel GMA 4500 (Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07))
Intel driver 2.9.1-1 using KMS with early start (modprobe.conf) and I rebuilt my initcpio to the new 2.6.32.2-2 kernel
    Gnome 2.28.2
Can anyone confirm this behaviour? Should I file a bug somewhere? I read about lots of upgrade problems with this new kernel, but for the rest everything else works fine so far.
    Thanks for your feedback.

Isn't suspending and resuming a session exactly what you're doing (or hoping to do) when you close your lid and then open it up again?  I.e., putting the machine into a low-power sleep state and then having everything come back to where you were when you wake it up?  You mentioned that the Gnome power management tools depend on pm-utils, which suggests that somewhere in there "pm-suspend" is getting called.  If you can find out where it's getting called (i.e., in some script that Gnome power manager uses), and try changing it to "pm-suspend --quirk-vbestate-restore" (or one of the other quirks, perhaps), then that may bring your screen back on wakeup.
Hehe, nope I don't hope to suspend :-) I just close the lid to save the display (and some power) but want my machine to keep running (when downloading torrents or when I'm going to eat etc...) Also it keeps the dust from entering the keyboard ;-)
I also took a look at the post where there should be a patch present, but I think it's for another problem: flickering screens.
For me it's a bug in intel driver or kernel, but still it's strange that KDE doesn't suffer from this!

  • Screen won't dim w/ Intel KMS [SOLVED]

I have a rather obscure Gateway T-series laptop, with an Intel 965 chip. To get backlight working I had to use acpi_backlight=vendor in Grub, but if KMS is on I can't dim anymore, either with the keys or xbacklight. The keys have no effect, and xbacklight says "No outputs have backlight property".
I haven't noticed any benefits from using KMS, so before now I usually had it off, but it seems that that isn't going to be an option anymore. Am I just SOL now? Anyone dealt with this before?

Re: No brightness adjustment on samsun n210 (Intel GMA 3150)
    Hi,
you can adjust brightness level by sending values directly to device, by setpci:
    setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=ff
where 00:02.0 is the device address returned by lspci, and ff is a hexadecimal value <0,ff>. I have n210 running Debian, works well
Because it wasn't easy to control brightness this way, I've written a program that adjusts brightness, you can download source from here:
    ftp://x.servebeer.com:51300/bright.c
    or here:
    http://info.wsisiz.edu.pl/~sieluzyc/bright.c
It's a _very simple_ program, but it allows you to increase/decrease brightness by predefinied step, check actual brightness level and set level to a specific value.
It uses the same method that setpci does (write to file in /sys), so plz remember this can be dangerous - use at your own risk.
App does not assign any key shourtcuts, you have to do this manually.

  • [kinda SOLVED]video-intel KMS problems

    Hello everyone.
I did a fresh install and I'd really appreciate some help setting up KMS properly.
So far I'm able to run gnome-shell with all the effects,
    but:
    1. I only get 1024x768 resolution instead of my native: 1920x1080.
    2. console is limited to small area when booting up (even though I did as the wiki suggests)
    3. I followed the wiki:(https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel) step by step, several times
but nothing I do seems to have any effect!
At last, I decided to stop rebooting and ask for help.
    please help me troubleshoot this!
    thank you for your time!
    p.s.1 here's a similar topic I found
though in my case I don't get weird artifacts
p.s.2. my graphics card is the one built in core i5.
[edit] I just fixed the resolution problem: for some unknown reason, gnome did not have my monitor selected by default
instead it defaulted to an "unknown device" which only supports 800χ600 and 1024χ1768. Weird.

Cause I had a similar problem with a nettop with an Intel Atom procesor; the fix for me was to disable the LVDS in grub to get working my native resolution.

  • Which Intel CPU is used for MacBook Pro 13" 2.26 GHz

    Hello,
I want to buy the above-mentioned MacBook Pro, however, I don't know which CPU model is used (P7550 or P8400), since I need the CPU feature "IVT" (Intel® Virtualization Technology) which is only available in P8400.
In some German discussions I got the information that both CPU models have been sold in Germany (checked with the tool CPU-X)
The MacBook Pro with 2.53 GHz (P8700) has also the IVT feature.
Does anybody know which CPU model is currently used in the MacBook 13" (MMB990*/A)?
    Thanks for your feedback.
    Michael

    Hello Rod,
Today I was in the apple store in munich and checked some mbp 13" 2,26 GHz systems. All had the 8400 inside. I shortly spoke with a saleman, however, he didn't know about different models inside the systems and told me, that I can't test the system locally, but I can check it @home and if i'm not happy with the system I could bring it back within 14 days.
    My result from the mbp:
    machdep.cpu.brand_string: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz
machdep.cpu.features: FPU VME DE PSE TSC MSR PAE MCE CX8 APIC SEP MTRR PGE MCA CMOV PAT PSE36 CLFSH DS ACPI MMX FXSR SSE SSE2 SS HTT TM SSE3 MON DSCPL VMX SMX EST TM2 SSSE3 CX16 TPR PDCM SSE4.1
I compared it with your results and the only difference I found was an additional feature "SMX" (Safer Mode Extensions). I couldn't find out for what exactly this is used, but I seems independ of the IVT.
I believe that you are right, and the VMX corresponds to the "IVT" feature. If this is true, I could take any MBP 13"
    What do you mean?
    Thx

  • Intel kms resolution problem in tty [solved]

    Hello guys,
I had always added vga=773 to kernel line to have a acceptable resolution on startup and in tty. This was a relict of my time without KMS. For testing purposes I deleted it and tried without it but the system fills then just only about one fourth of my native 1280x800 screen size on my notebook, arranged in the top left corner.
I added vga=773 back to kernel line but it doesn't work anymore. KMS is definitely working because the font itself is pin sharp and not as fuzzy as without it.
    Any ideas?
    My kernel line
    kernel /vmlinuz26 cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:main root=/dev/mapper/main-root ro vga=773 acpi_backlight=vendor
    And finally my graphic card
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Don't disable KMS, it is a requirement now. The right thing to do if your resolution is wrongly detected is to append the "video" option to your kernel. Example of this:
    video=LVDS-1:1280x800
Our wiki says that if vga is appended the KMS will break, which is not really true, what happens is that vesafb is loaded but is overrided as soon as KMS kicks in. Still the right thing do to is to setup KMS to start as early as you want it, there are a few methods on the wiki. Then setup your resolution correctly as mentioned, if it's not autodetected properly.
Well I have to correct myself. The resolution is detected correctly but obviously he isn't loading LVDS. I get the following output during startup:
    [drm] TV-21: set mode 848x480 28
    [drm] LVDS-8: set mode 1280x800 29
So it seems he is loading TV (which TV? I haven't plugged in any external monitor or device) instead of LVDS. How can I change that?

I suspect you're out of luck on a driver. OSX has drivers built-in for many devices, and for those those that don't exist the devices either have them on the device ROM or in unusual cases, separate drivers supplied with the device. There's a lot of devices that simply don't work on Macs.

  • Cursor skipping under load with Intel KMS

    This is driving me nuts...
Performance with Intel drivers and KMS is usually decent. However, under certain loads - most notably, starting Wine - the cursor skips and freezes nonstop. This wasn't an issue when I was able to disable KMS, but now that KMS is required... Well, there it is. Is there any way to work around this?

Well, downgrading the driver could do.
BTW, I can't even boot up normally with 2.10 driver and KMS - it simply throws out a blank screen. Downgrade to 2.9 solved the problem.
