Intel mac extreme - no go plugging computer directly into extreme

I have a 24 inch Mac and yesterday bought an airport extreme. I want the computer to work plugged into the extreme, but when I do this it says that the Mac has a self assigned IP address and can not access the internet.
I have updated all software and have plugged the computer directly into DSl and it works, but when I do dsl to> extreme to> computer it is no go.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful. I have not been able to locate this problem onany of the discussion boards.
thanks

Is the status light on the Extreme green? If you launch AirPort Utility, select the Extreme in the column on the left, and click on "Manual Setup", what do you see for "IP Address" at the bottom of the Summary panel?
Did you unplug your DSL modem and wait several minutes before reapplying power whenever you switch between connecting the Extreme or your Mac to the modem?

I am trying to connect a WD Mybook for Mac to my airport/time machine device.  On the AirPort Utility it listed under Disks at 0 Mb.  I enabled file sharing.  And also followed all the steps - "secured disk access: with a disk passord", "Airport disk guest access: read and write", "Share disks over WAN". But nothing happens.  If I plug it directly into my MacBook it works fine.  How do I fix it?  Also, its connected via a powered usb hub.

I assume that you are using  Mac operating system 10.4.11, as your profile indicates.
The instructions that you referenced are for use with AirPort Utility....not AirPort Admin Utility.
Suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.4.2 for Mac , which will run on 10.4.11.
Also noticed that the instructions do not tell you that the hard drive should be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work with the AirPort Extreme, but they should.

It talks extensively about charging in the user guide, and how USB ports on PCs and older Macs may not provide sufficient power to charge the iPad.  The user guide is available for free from the iBook store (accessed directly via the iPad iBooks app).
My iPad charges fine when plugged in to the back of my iMac, but I would always prefer to use the mains adaptor to save the strain on my USB circuits (which can wear out if used heavily to power external devices).

  • How can I import all the music files on my computer directly into my iTunes library?

I recently cleaned my computer of all junk files and this resulted in a loss of all my music from my iTunes library. All of the files are still on my computer but I can only find them one at a time is there a way to speed up this process?

Ok, go to your downloads in itunes and right click on what you wish to remove and click delete, then confirm the dialoague box and it should remove it.  I did this with a free tv episode to test it out.  Just now worked.  If you have problems try updating itunes and then try again.

  • Can I charge my ipod classic in Germany with the same usb wall charger I use in the USA, by plugging it directly into the correct adapter plug? Or do I need a power converter/transformer?

I will be in Germany for a year. I want to take my ipod classic and charge it with a usb wall charger, like I do here in the USA. Can I simply use the correct wall adapter plug for Germany, or must I use a power converter/transformer in between?

It should work as long as the prongs adapter are adapted to the outlet configuration.

  • Do I have to plug my ipad mini directly into the mains for a reliable charge?

I've been having an issue with my new ipad mini not charging even when its plugged in using the mains adapter unless I plug it directly into the wall. This is a bit inconvienient as I don't have enough sockets and I like to use my ipad as a clock radio with TuneIn so when I wake up my battery is about 40% even though its been plugged in overnight.

    This is unclear and confusing...

    iPad Charging
"The fastest way to charge your iPad is with the included USB Power Adapter.
iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter.
When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it's in sleep mode.
Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain."

  • Windows programs on new Intel Mac

    Hi there,
I have a 20" iMac G5 at home, a Macbook and now at work, I am thinking of getting a 20" iMac Intel.
Now, I will need to run programs such as matlab and many other data/scientific programs at work - in windows mode. Everyone else runs things in windows and also they only have a site licence for the windows products.
Thus, I figure I either get a DELL or get an iMac. I am just wondering what problems people are having running windows programs on the mac.
Secondly, which application is better for running windows? Can I use parallels or something? I want to be able to switch between the OS systems easily and if at all possible - drag and drop from Mac OSX (email attachment for example) into windows or vice versa...
    Any tips appreciated.
    Martin
P.S. Feel free to check out my new site web.mac.com/martinirwin

If all the software you intend to use requires Windows, then there is little point in buying a Mac just to run Windows' applications. It would make more sense to buy a Windows' computer.
You can run Windows on a Mac in one of several ways. You can install Apple's Boot Camp software which lets you boot the computer directly into Windows and essentially be running Windows as if on Windows' hardware.
You can purchase Parallels Desktop for Mac which is virtualization software that allows you to install many different guest OSes including all extant versions of Windows and several flavors of Unix/Linix. Parallels is nearly as fast as Boot Camp except for 3D video which does not use hardware acceleration as does Boot Camp. Thus, video intensive applications such as games will not work as well as they would running under Boot Camp. However, Parallels enables you to run the guest OS in a separate window concurrently with OS X. Boot Camp requires booting directly into Windows.
Last, there is CrossOver (currently in beta) that allows you to run Windows applications without actually installing Windows. However, it suffers from the same video problems as Parallels. Furthermore, you can only use Windows' applications that have been "converted" to work with CrossOver and those applications must be downloaded from the developers (Codeweavers.)
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Eastwest Gold Bundle doesn't work on intel macs

I got Eastwest Symphony Orchestra Gold Bundle today and just found out that it wouldn’t work with Logic 8 because it’s not Universal Binary. Now what's the best way to solve this problem? I've read that I need to spend another $300 on Kontakt just to HOST the eastwest in Logic 8 in MacBook Pro, aside of just spending $600 on the Gold Bundle. You know that's quite mad. I got the Logic Studio for $150 (academic in university store) and it works so well without any registration hassle. By contrast Eastwest comes with out of date VISE installer, tons of updating requirements, multiple visits to Native Instruments, and after all it doesn't work in your DAW if you use Intel Macs, which includes EVERY apple computer in stores right now. How can people of Eastwest sleep at night?
Anyways, I'm looking for solutions. Any work around? Please help! And thank you!
    Tim

    This probably doesn't help but...
If you do end up forking out the $$ for Kontakt, you will have purchased a FANTASTIC program that also happens to include a pretty extensive sample library. I do like EWQL Gold better than the VSL subset that comes with Kontakt, but the VSL subset is only a part of what comes with Kontakt.
In any case, to really get the best of EWQL Gold, you will be much better off if you get Kontakt or Play. The Kompakt software is OK, but for a whole orchestra, it is much more convenient to have a full sampler IMHO.

  • CS3 bugs fixed for intel macs?????????

CS2 when it came out was not designed for the Intel processor so there was problems until adobe managed to iron out the problems. The only issue is CS2 the performance is not as great as it should be due to this. Is CS3 fully compatible with Intel macs?
On cs2 now and researching into whether its right to upgrade now or leave it a year?

CS3 is made to run natively on the Intel machines. CS3 works best running under Tiger if you have an Intel machine that has Tiger CS3 will run great. If you need to get a new machine that is Leopard only, then there are a few issues.
As Bob said there are many threads.

  • How can I import bookmark HTML records directly into pre-defined (but empty) Folders?

Firefox is my default browser. I am in the process of replacing an old computer with a new one. I've converted into HTML files the Bookmark content of all of the Folders appearing within the Bookmarks section of Firefox on my old computer. I then uploaded this into the cloud, and downloaded it to my new computer. I've loaded Firefox afresh on the new computer. Now . . .
Ideally, I would like to be able to import these saved/HTML bookmarks (now on my new computer) directly into the new Firefox, keeping the Folder structure maintained in saving them from the old computer; less ideally, but still acceptable, would be to simply re-create as empty Folders each Folder from the old computer's Firefox setup and then do a 'Select All' copy/paste from each of these Folders as saved in my downloaded HTML bookmarks into these initially empty Folders created in the new computer's Firefox Bookmarks section. Is either of these currently possible? In short, this is a quite distinct scenario from importing bookmarks from other browsers on the same computer.
I have tried, but it seems that neither of these functions is currently viable. As common as replacing one computer with another is, I find this a pretty significant oversight which will require a very time consuming conversion process if such functions are not currently available; i.e., I'll have to open each saved HTML Folder and manually activate each individual html bookmark, go to that website, and individually re-bookmark each of these one by one within the Bookmarks section of Firefox on my new computer as if I were bookmarking this site for the very first time. With hundreds and hundreds of bookmarks segregated into about 30 Folders, I think you can see what a productivity drain this will be.
While there appear to be some quite interesting and potentially useful FireFox Addons - e.g., Categorize - none of these seems to address/resolve this problem. Can you advise? Thank you.

To start out with, Firefox hasn't used the HTML format for storing bookmarks for a few years now; you can still import and export bookmarks in HTML format, as you can with just about any other browser out there as an interchange format. Firefox 3.0+ versions use an SQLite database for storing bookmarks and browsing history in the place.sqlite file. Firefox 3.0+ versions do automatic backups of your bookmarks in the JSON format; that file includes "Tags" data but not the web site Favicon data. Restoring a backup from an old PC to the new PC is how Mozilla handles replacing an old computer - or you can "backup" the entire old Profile and transfer that data to the new PC manually. A user could also use Firefox Sync to "sync" their personal data onto the new PC. IMO, you're over-thinking this using dated information (talking about HTML files) without knowing about what options you currently have with Firefox and Mozilla.
Is that a genuine Netscape-1 bookmarks.html file? ''Look at the first line of code in that HTML file to see.'' <br />
Or is it a standard HTML file?
If you have a genuine bookmarks.html file, you can '''Import''' that file thru Organize Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Import HTML... > From an HTML file.
Doing it that way you will be appending the bookmarks & folders that are in the '''Bookmarks Menu''' folder right now. The ordering of the folders and bookmarks in the "imported" file is identical, the "imported" data is added below the existing data. That said, the '''''Bookmarks Toolbar''''' folder and the '''''Unsorted Bookmarks''''' folder from the "imported" data will be in the Bookmarks Menu folder at the bottom; you'll have to move the bookmarks that are in that folder to their respective folders, above and below the Bookmarks Menu folder.

  • How to load properties from csv file directly into a .dll parameter in a test step

    Hi,
I would like to take values from a property file  and plug them directly into parameter used to invoke dll calls.
I have looked at examples on how to use the property loader to input test limits, but I cannot figure out how to pipe into the params.
    I have tried. <step name>.Module.<param name>
    step.propertieslist[0].
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    m
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I agree that it would be nice.  The difference between limits and parameters though is that parameters are set dynamically.  What I mean by that is you never know how many parameters a step will have until you define the module. Whereas the Limits are always set in stone.  The only difference is the MultiNumeric Limit Test which is just an array that get's appended too with the same datatype.  And the only acess to a parameters value is through the API unless it is a variable.
The other hard part is that you don't know the datatype of parameters.  Any step can have any number of parameters as well as any datatype being passed to each individual parameter.
I think if you are set on NOT creating Locals or FileGlobals then you would need to create custom step types with subproperties that get assigned to the parameters.  This could be even more painful though because now you have to maintain and support the custom step types.
The other option would be to create your own property loader step that could call in and set things in the API.  HMMM now that would be an interesting project...

  • How do I limit access of a computer that is plugged directly into the router?

I have an AirPort Extreme, Version 7.6.1  I need to limit access of a computer that's plugged by usb directly into the router.  I have the MAC address for this computer and have had restrictions on it the in the past, but it was connected by WiFi then.  How do I do this?  Do I limit access to the Ethernet ID?  I don't want to lock myself out trying to figure it out; I did that last night.  Can someone advise please.

You could use OpenDNS's parental controls:
    http://www.opendns.com/home-solutions/parental-controls
It can restrict access according to your specifications for everyone on your network.
    It's free.
