Intel Mac Pro Drive Selection

What would be the best internal drive for the mac pro and HD/HDV editing? I would like to but a pair and stripe them together. I use FCP 5.1.4. I am considering the Seagate 1TB barracudas. Any suggestions? Would I be better off by buying a g-tech g-raid2?

That would be a Seagate ST31000340AS, correct?
That's what I put into all my systems. They benchmark anywhere from 102 to 112 MB/sec in the 2008 MacPros. I've installed a lot of these for my clients - no failures yet.

I have moved from a G5 Powermac to an Intel Mac Pro and selectively porting over items from a backup hard drive.

Clarisworks, you need Appleworks, which will only work with Mac OS X10.6.8 or earlier.  See this tip if you must go newer.  Mac Pros with newer hardware configuration than July 20, 2011 can't use Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier without this tip and then it would be Mac OS X Server.  I'm not sure if the new black Mac Pro supports that configuration or not.
iPhoto, there is an iPhoto for all versions of Mac OS X.
iTunes, there is an iTunes for all versions of Mac OS X.  Note with iTunes versions 11 and later, which are needed for syncing with iOS 7 or or later, you will lose coverflow, if you liked that feature.  Sadly you can't run an older version of iTunes from within Mac OS X 10.9 or later.
Sketchup: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/60107 shows the versions that will work with intermediate Mac OS X versions, and this shows the latest version: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/36208 be sure to click on the operating system you choose to use.
GIF - Viewing GIFs Apple's Preview can do that.  Editing them, I like http://www.lemkesoft.com/ Graphicconverter.
DMG is able to be opened by all versions of Mac OS X.  This are just "disk images" which store programs on a virtual disk that will open when double clicked.    Frequently you'll find the installer of the said program inside.  To find out if the program itself is compatible with 10.7 through 10.9, see http://www.roaringapps.com/

  • Intel Mac Pro w/10.4.7 - I need to access a 2003 Western Digital hard drive

Hey another question for the gurus of Mac out there. Got an Intel Mac Pro running 10.4.7 and I need to access old information from someones else's Western Digital (internal/ external w/case) drive. It's a "WD1200JB-00RCA1" model drive from 2003. I've already tried using the case with firewire connection on both my laptop and Mac Pro, but it will not mount. I does get power though. I'm thinking of trying it internally, but know that the Mac Pro is picky about specific types and specs on drives. Just curious if anyone thinks I can make it work internaly without screwing up the drive or more importantly, the Mac Pro.
Apparently this same drive was used internally on a mac back in 2003, but obvioulsy an older Mac. Any tips appreciated.

That drive (according to WD) is a WD Caviar SE 120GB UDMA 100 IDE drive. Assuming everything is set-up correctly, external enclosures typically require the drive to be jumpered as and IDE master, then it should mount.
The fact that it doesn't mount is not a good sign.
You could try this internally in the spare optical drive bay - you'd need a 5.25" to 3.5" mounting kit. If I were to go this route, I'd disconnect the optical drive temporarily - the cables will reach better and you stand less chance of getting an IDE bus incompatability with the optical drive.
I think the default set-up for the MacPro IDE bus is Cable Select so you may need to look into jumpering the drive dor this (CSEL)

  • Usb midi driver for older Edirol sk-500 keyboard for use in Intel Mac Pro

I have just moved to an Intel Mac Pro from my old G4 Power Mac. I was using a Edirol (Roland ED) SK-500 usb midi controller in both Garageband and Logic. The old driver doesn't want to work in the new Intel machine. Checked Edirol's site and didn't find anything newer to use and nothing that addressed the Intel situation explicitly.
Does anyone have a newer compatible driver or some other solution for this issue?
    Thanks,
    Gord
    Intel Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 Xeon, 2 gig ram, 1.2 terabyte storage Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    intel mac pro 2 x 2.66 xeon, 2 gig ram, 1 terabyte storage   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

SK-500 is a discontinued product and I do not think Edirol will ever release a Universal Binary driver. I'd suggest you sell it, and buy their PCR-M50/80 keyboard (these are awesome) or if you also want sounds, get the Roland Juno-G synth (128 voices polyphony, 1000+ sounds, full-blown synth and 5 effects processors). All these work as USB MIDI controllers with Universal Binary drivers.

  • Mac Pro Drive Configuration - Home User

    Hi all
I'm trying to determine the 'best' drive configuration for my needs... I'm not a pro-user (although, I do use DVDSP and Motion for some DVDs I make from EyeTV) and so I don't think I want to set up a RAID or anything like that... here's a little background
I was recently having my MP operate really slowly (in terms of disk paging) because of my boot drive (a Seagate ST3500630AS at 3.AAC) was
    1) Rather full - < 100GB free - lesser impact, I think
    2) Some directory corruption - drive stopped booting from diskarb error
I was able to resolve the issue by wiping out the drive and it's working much better now.... but the whole thing got me thinking about my config... I had pretty much just been 'slapping' drives in as I needed drive space (I have the shipping 250GB, my old 200GB Seagat, a new ST3500630AS and a FW800 500GB Maxtor)
I've been doing some reading and it seems that it's optimal to not have one's boot drive have anything but the OS (w VM swap files too, right) and Applications... it seems that the two best options are either a WD 'Raptor' (either 74GB or 150GB) or a Maxtor Maxline III to serve as the boot drive... I understand why the 'Raptor' is a better option (compared to my ST3500630AS - faster RPM) but why is the Maxtor (laying aside the firmware issue on the ST3500630AS)? Is it because the Maxtor's are supposed to be better at handling small files (the OS and the swap files are that, right?)? It seems to me that the 'Raptor' isn't the option I want to choose because I don't think I actually 'need' it... 74GB seems a little small to me (but perhaps not) while the 150GB seems a bit expensive when considering if I even 'need' the 'Raptor'
I'm anticipating that the Maxtor MaxLine III will be what I want to get for my boot drive... how would I want to back that up? Does it really matter if it's external? Someone had mentioned that you can do it to a disk image but then how do I boot off of that if I have an issue? Or is that just for the purpose of 'snapshotting' the system?
As I mentioned, I have the ST3500630AS and the external FW800 500GB Maxtor... they're a perfect match in size and I like having access to all of my home data on an external drive... that way if my MP dies (as my old G5s did), I can simply connect my FW drive to my old PBG4 and I'm up and running without a hitch... but I'm a little peeved about the whole firmware thing and the handicapped performance (is there anyway I can address this or should this drive be relegated to a backup status?)...
Another question - the Seagate's have the new perpendicular technology... it seems to me that people aren't that concerned about it - I thought it was supposed to be a really good thing?
What would people do in my shoes? If a solution needs more than one additional drive - I am game for ditching my smaller existing SATA drives.... Any and all suggestions would most appreciated...
    Thanks!

The only real answer to your question is to do what you want. There is no such thing as an "optimal" configuration or "best" drive because what's optimal is dependent upon what you do and need. The best drive depends upon what you want from the drive.
The Raptors are very fast but also very expensive. About twice the cost of a Maxtor Maxline Pro. However, if you feel the need for speed on your startup drive, then the Raptor is what you want. If you would rather compromise between speed, storage space, and noise then the Maxtor is a good choice. However, Seagate purchased Maxtor some time ago. The Maxtor Maxline Pro drives are being phased out (in the 300 GB and larger sizes) so as not to compete with Seagate's line of products.
You can find useful benchmark tests on hard drives at http://www.barefeats.com/ and http://www.storagereview.com/.
Personally, I would configure the system in such a way that you have sufficient storage space on one or two separate drives that can be used to backup the rest of the system. As an example, in my system I use three 300 GB Maxtor Maxline Pros (this system was setup last September.) One drive is used as my main startup drive. The other two are configured as a mirrored RAID. I use the RAID as the backup for the main startup drive. The mirrored RAID provides both backup and redundancy for added data protection. I use backup software (Synchronize! Pro X) to perform automated backups on a daily, weekly (entire Users folder,) and monthly (entire drive) basis.
Of more importance than drive configuration is maintaining your system for optimal performance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Game controller for intel Mac pro

Any suggestions for a game contoller for an intel Mac pro? I've had no luck with tatieboggle or with the Logitech f710 wireless. Running latest system. Thanks!

For three years I have been trying to get a reliable connection with the F710 for each OSX update. The macgamepads.com and tattiebogle.net solutions do not actually work for extended gaming experiances. In short OSX is lacking REAL controller support. And as long as I have had my Mac Pro it has always been that way.
There is a reason why people don't play games on Mac. I have a SSD drive dedicated entirely to Windows 8 Bootcamp because playing even the most simplistic game on a Mac is a god **** nightmare. You want the F710 to work? Get a PC or run Bootcamp - DON'T PLAY GAMES IN OSX.

  • Trying to load pre-2006 lso files into Logic 8 on my new intel Mac Pro

I'm trying to load pre-2006 lso files into Logic 8 on my new intel Mac Pro, but they crash the app every time. files saved 2006 and later load OK. Anybody shed any light on this or know of a fix (other than the laborious work-around of re-saving all early lso's in logic 8 on the PPC and physically moving them via a portable drive to the new machine)?
(BTW, those files also crash the Logic 7 installed on the intel Mac.)

Upon further work with my migration, I find I was incorrect in the time frame assertion of these failed files: apparently, the creation/modification dates have nothing to do with it and the reality is that some files fail at random, while others load just fine. right now it looks to be about 50/50 Beats me why this is.
Anyway, for those interested, I've discovered a very helpful key to the quick processing of file data for a plethora of files (i. e. re-saving the "bad" lso files as Logic 8 projects on the older CPU and moving them over to my new machine), and that is the 'control key/launch' of the app. I hadn't realized that Apple had added this feature to Logic to enable easier work on multiple song files when one does not require the audio.
For those who don't know about it, the 'control key/launch' provides an option to disable the core audio at app start-up, thus allowing files to load instantly without loading the plug-in library files associated with tracks - great for copying MIDI data between song files, or in this case, re-saving a batch.
Still puzzled, though, as to why so many older lso files crash Logic when they attempt to load on my new CPU.

  • Can my Mac Pro drive my MacBook?

Can my Mac Pro drive my MacBook so i use the MacBook monitor/keyboard but the MacPro’s hard drives, software? How do I do it?

There's a free and much simpler way than Apple Remote Desktop since that is enterprise level software (for schools and businesses.)
All you have to do is go into the Sharing system preference on your Mac Pro and turn on Screen Sharing.
Then you connect to your Mac Pro from your MacBook desktop. On the MacBook in the Finder desktop, go into Network, select the Mac Pro, and there will be a button at the top of the Finder window for screen sharing. Click it, log in, and you will be controlling the Mac Pro from the MacBook.

  • FCP, Intel mac pro crashing

SO here is the set up
Dual 2.66 Intel mac pro, 4gb ram, system drive is 500gb, AV drive is over fibre channel.
    OS is 10.4.8 FCP 5.1.2
all is fresh install on new system, working good for the first week.
The issues are when I go to render out I get maybe to 75% then the system crashes, get the screen that tells me I have to hold down the power button etc.
The project file contains 1 stream of DV footage and 1 Livetype movie, seems to not like the live type, but crashes with or without it, just faster with.
On a side note a second issue has been trying to burn to dvd, it will crash the same way, after completeing 25-50%, making coasters.
this isuue is present in both machines we have which are identical.
I also have one of them with the loud fans, straight out of the box, reminded me of my old g4 dual 1.25 mdd.. Firmware is up to date on it. Both machines are new within the last 2 weeks.
    here is the crash report.

    Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.1: Mon Sep 25 19:42:00 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.13.8.obj~1/RELEASE_I386
Common on both machines, both macchines have the ATTO Celerity PCI Express card for the fibre channel. So I went to ATTO's site looking for new drivers and found this
"ATTO's UL5D and Celerity PCI Express adapters will work in the MAC Pro, however; there is a temporary issue with the systems containing 2.5 GB or more RAM. Please limit the RAM to less than 2.5 GB until this can be resolved. Also, ATTO Configuration Tool version 3.6 will not function properly. Please watch our web site for solutions to both of these issues after 10/21/06."
So tomorrow I will bring both machines and hook back up to the terrablock and try it out with 2 gb ram rather than 4gb.
By looking at this panick log, am I right to assume because I see the ATTO in the log it could be the issue? Looking in google for anyone talking about this I found 1 where they said the temp issue as ATTO put it is a freeze/bomb issue. I will hopefully be able to check it out tomorrow, if I get out of training soon enough.
Any more input is always welcome.
    Thanks

  • Final Cut Pro 5.1 on Intel Mac Pro

    Hi,
I have been running successfully Final Cut Pro 5.1 on my intel Mac Pro.
Suddenly it stopped working. While opening, it suddenly quit. Tried to fully uninstall Final Cut following Apple HOWTO and reinstall. Unfortunately, Final Cut is still not working.
I have read lots a various messages and no-one seems to have a 100% success rate.
    Anyone has a suggestion?
    Cheers
    Ben

someone posted something on Craigslist about the intel Macs and he said that the intel just freezes up with FCP and some other programs
Older versions of FCP do NOT run well on IntelMacs because they were written to run on PPC chipped Macs only. Probably the situation you read about on Craigslist. The OP here is running the universal version of FCP so that shouldn't be an issue in this case.

  • My recent purchase of QuickTime 7 Pro for Mac OS X upgrade doesn't do "screen record" on my Intel Mac Pro with system 10.6.8. Apple won't accept responsibility and refund my money.

QuickTime 7 doesn't offer that, but the built-in QuickTime X Player does. You may find another use for the key.

  • Log into TC Drive and Mac Pro  Drive

I am able to log into my Mac Pro's drives, when file sharing is turned on in the OSX preferences, over the wan using TC which is very cool. Port forwarding works as it should. I use the Connect to Server under the Go menu , all is good. However, is it possible to access both the Mac Pro Drives and TC's internal drive from the wan? I don't need to access them simultaneously. But it would be nice to log into one or the other at will.
It seems that if file sharing is turned in the OSX preferences. I cannot log into TC's drive even though File Sharing and wan are both turned on under the Disk tab in TC. By the way, I have assigned a different name and password to the TC disk.
Does anyone know how this is done, or if it can be done?

I need to reply to my own message. As I mentioned at top of this post I am able to get into my Mac Pro’s drives using file sharing just fine. (read above) I now can get to TC hard drive as well with this set up. I know the IP address of TC. XXXX.XXXX.XXXX.XXXX found in the Internet Connection tab of the Internet menu in AirPort. Lets say its 12.12.12.12
I set up AirPort this way:
Disks -> File Sharing. Check both Enable file sharing and Share disks over Ethernet WAN port.
Disks -> Accounts. Click on the + to add a User
Enter a name and password, set the File Sharing Access to Read and Write
    Click Done
Advanced -> Port Mapping then Clicked the + to add a new port
I did nothing with the Service dropdown. Although I enjoyed gazing at it.
Set Public UDP Port(s) XXXX (4 digit number lets say 7878)
Set Public TCP Port(s) 7878 (same number as Public UDP, 7878)
Set Private IP Address to the IP address of my Mac Pro
Set Private UDP Port(s) to 548
Set Private TCP Port(s) to 548
Clicked Continue and entered Description name Clicked done then Update
    On my Mac Pro
I turned on File Sharing from the Preferences -> Sharing Panel
I drove to the office, which is generally how I get there. Powered up my Mac. Clicked Go -> Connect to Server. From the Desktop menu.
To connect to TC hard drive:
In the Server Address: field I entered afp://12.12.12.12 then Clicked Connect.
In the Name field I entered the user name and Password from the Disks -> Accounts dialogue in AirPort Utility (the stuff I set up earlier).
I Clicked Connect and saw my TC’s drive.
To connect to my Mac Pro’s Drives
In the Server Address: field I entered afp://12.12.12.12:7878 (followed by the port number I set up earlier. From the Advanced -> Port Mapping in AirPort)
In the Name field I entered the name of the login on I use on my Mac Pro and its password
Clicked Connect and saw all 5 drives installed in my Mac Pro
I sat put back, put my hands behind my head and smiled. Shear poetry. And that’s why I buy apple.

  • Possible to use iPhone headset mic on 2006 Intel Mac Pro?

Does anyone know if it's possible to get the iPhone headset working on a 2006 Intel Mac Pro? Or, are there any adapters that would allow the headset to work? I'd like to use Skype on this machine, but I don't want to have to have a clunky full-on headset for it.
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

  • Cannot access yahoo mail on my intel mac pro

hi i can access my yahoo email on my laptop using safari which is in power mac g4 but cannot do the same on intel mac pro can please someone suggest a cure?
When i enter user id and password while using safari to access email on yahoo mail using my laptop i do not have any problems. However, when i repeat the same using my mac pro safari seems to get me into yahoo mail but asks me repeatedly for my password and does not get me into my mail box.
Do i need to adjust my safari preferences or trash some files from the library? please help

I have had this problem for 2 days, where my yahoo Inbox says it is updated, but hasn't, then gives me "Cannot connect to mail servier"  error message.  If I go to my various folders (other than inbox) they will all update.
Very frustrating.  All other email accounts work fine and only the inbox in yahoo seems to have this problem.
If anyone figured out how to fix this, then let us know.  Thanks
I'll try yahoo support forum next and see if they have anything on this.

  • Bootcamp, intel mac pro, using entire drive, installer hangs- what am I doi

I have been trying to install boot camp and windows on my Mac Pro. Installing on my MacBook Pro was so easy I didn't expect any kind of problems, but I got them anyway.
    a) I am installing on a hard drive and I expect to use the entire drive. I start boot camp and designate the drive. Windows appears to start installing but when I get the format screen, there is no partition on any drive labelled Boot Camp.
    b) if I choose the drive I wanted anyway, it will format for NTFS and copy all the files. It will re-boot and start the GUI install but hang with 33 minutes to go. I have tried this multiple times and the result is identical every time.
    What am I doing wrong?

As of this point in time, I have been able to get windows installed- I noticed during the windows setup and format section that the disk actually had two partitions, one very small and the other the size of the rest of the disk.
(this was probably a mistake) but I deleted the small partition, formatted the large one NTFS and continued with the install. Well, windows went on without a whimper after that and I was able to install the windows drivers from my apple disk.
BUT when i go to preferences/startup disk to select the BOOTCAMP partition (yes, that shows now) I don't see it.
If I start Fusion, I can see and boot the bootcamp partition but if I go into the control panel and start the bootcamp control, the mac os partition does not show.
So, does it sound as though I deleted what apple uses to select between the mac os and windows installations when i deleted that small partition?
I am afraid to try again.
