  • Opening database from other OS on Intel Mac

I can open a database created on Windows on my PPC Mac.
I can open a database created on a PPC Mac on Windows or Intel Linux
But I don't seem to be able to open a database created on a PPC Mac on an Intel Mac.
Is there a known bug about this ?
    Am I missing something ?
I've taken care of all endianness issues I'm aware of and it works between PPC OS X and Windows or Intel Linux.
    Thanks.
    Andi..

Ok, I made some progress but it still doesn't work. Here is what I learned:
    - Restoring my backups works as long as the original log file is there. I can only reuse the log file
if the endianness of both platforms are the same and I verified that this worked indeed.
    - When I don't copy the log file, I get the error reported earlier. The problem I reported earlier is not specific to Intel Mac OS X but specific to restoring database files without their log file.
I changed the code to call env->lsn_reset() on the db files as they are copied during a backup. Here are the steps that I take to make a backup:
    - create a destination dir
    - run env->txn_checkpoint() with DB_FORCE in the source dir
    - run env->log_archive(DB_ARCH_REMOVE) at which point I'm left with one log file only
    - each dbFile is copied by:
    + copy dbFile to dbFile.lsn
    + env->lsn_reset(dbFile.lsn)
    + move dbFile.lsn to destDir/dbFile
I'm now unable to even open these backed up database files later locally, on the same machine.
After restoring the files, the env is re-created with DB_RECOVER_FATAL | DB_CREATE, and that seems to work, but the db->open() statements on the restored db files fail.
    The errfile says this:
file unknown (meta pgno = 0) has LSN [3][2067729].
    end of log is [1][28]
./__repository__/__items.db: unexpected file type or format
I did verify that lsn_reset() did something on __items.db, the src file and dst files are different.
What am I missing now ?
    Thanks
    Andi..

  • No temperature monitors for Intel Macs?

I found the below in the FAQ for the application 'Temperature Monitor' and thought it might helpful to understand why we don't have a temperature monitoring application, or perhaps never will. SInce we do have the speedit.kext way to read CPU temperature, perhaps at least that is possible to implement in a standalone application.
Q: I am using the latest release of the application which should support my computer, but still no sensor at all, or only a S.M.A.R.T. hard drive temperature sensor is found. Is this normal?
A: Unfortunately there are some specific Macintosh systems which don't allow that sensor values can be read out by a normal application program. There are two different cases:
The computer uses a self-contained cooling control system. The hardware itself controls its own monitoring. No transfer of data from the sensor to the operating system is possible because there is no bus connection between the sensor and the actual computer.
The computer contains sensors accessible via a data bus, but cooling control is independent of Mac OS X. Apple does not provide any device drivers which would allow application programs to get data from the sensor. Only the firmware or a closed part of the operating system core has access to sensor data.
In both cases, it is not possible to develop an application program which could read out sensor values. The following Macintosh systems are affected by this problem:
    PowerBook G4 Titanium (all models)
    eMac (all models)
    iMac G4 (all models)
    Mac mini (all models)
Note that Intel-based Macintosh systems use a special mix of the mentioned monitoring techniques: Mac OS X only uses the load sensor of the graphics chip for thermal management. This sensor can be displayed by Hardware Monitor without any problems, it is however not displayed by Temperature Monitor, because this sensor does not measure temperature.
All other sensors in Intel Macs are controlled by special hardware working independently of the operating system, the Apple System Management Controller. This device has not been disclosed by Apple. There are neither drivers for Mac OS X, nor any documentation, and all details related to the function of this chip have been "censored" by Apple in the source code of Darwin. For this reason it is currently impossible that any application program could get readings from this chip.

"Mac OS X only uses the load sensor of the graphics chip for thermal management"
Yes and no. But, this doesn't really seem to be the case! If this is true, simply running Quake4 SHOULD cause the fans to kick on as the GPU is being heavily used. This did not happen on my machine. Only after reapplying the thermal paste would both fans kick in during heavy use. My guess is that it is actually a mix of conditions that cause the fans to operate at different levels. Heat pipe temp + GPU load + ...
I think one variable that is not being used is processor temp. I can't really understand why not though because that would go a long way to alleviating some of our heat problems and the fans would operate in a semi-normal fashion even if the processor/heat pipe connection is suboptimal.

  • Intel Mac Mini fans run full blast even when off

    Hi All,
I have gone through the forums and haven't found an answer to this one. I have an Intel Mac Mini running the latest updated Tiger that I use solely for a media center.
About a week ago, the box started running fans full blast, regardless of whether it was actually turned on or not. As soon as it is plugged in the fans blast.
Otherwise, it seems healthy, and boots normally.
The steps I have taken so far include resetting permissions, verifying the disk, and resetting the SMC in the proscribed fashion.
After this occurred, I downloaded and installed smcFanControl from Lifehacker.com. This reported fan speed of zero and Temperature of zero.
Next I opened the case and insured the fan/HD cable next to the lttle battery was securely fastened as this had been reported to cause this symptom.
What's next? The device is out of warranty and honestly, I don't want to spend any money if I can help it.
Should I take it apart further and see if the other end of the fan/HD cable has somehow worked loose?
Can anyone think of another cause besides a loose cable?
What if I completely disabled the fan? The hardest thing I ever ask it to do is run iTunes and VLC.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Dave

I have refurbished two G5s with LCS and screaming fans (this was avery common problem with G5 LCS macs), the red light on the motherboard could mean the CPUs need to be re-seated. This red LED light appeared on my mac after I had removed the CPUs to add new thermal paste.
If you have done all the necessary basics with no sucess here are a few things to try next.
    1 - Coolant
As BDAqua mentioned above, coolant evaporates and often leaks at the 'O' rings, to check this you will need to remove the CPUs from the LCS and check for crystalisation (white rice). If you have leakage, it will be time to drain the block, add new coolant and 'O' rings. This is tricky to do but there is lots of info here and on other sites to help you.
    2 - Thermal paste
Replace the thermal paste with Artic MX4.
Try the above and let is know how ou get on.

  • NikonScan v4 and Intel Mac

I'm looking for people that can verify if NikonScan version 4, a Nikon Scanner, and an Intel Mac can play nice together.
Nikon says Intel Core Duo Macs are unsupported. What about the Core Solo? It's not mentioned. That doesn't mean it won't work on an Intel Duo or Solo and I'm just looking for verification either way from people that have actually tried it.
    Nikon's Official Answer-
    http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=13865&pcreated=1139239488
Currently Nikon products and software applications are not supported on Macintosh computers powered by the Intel Core Duo processor. Compatibility and support for Nikon products and software with Macintosh computers powered by the Intel Core Duo processor is currently under review by the Nikon Quality department. At this time we do not have any time-tables regarding when we will or if we will issue drivers and software support for this new system. Rest assured that Nikon will make every effort to support all the latest technologies developed by Apple and Microsoft. Keep checking our Knowledge Database system for updates regarding this issue over the upcoming months.
Someone in another Apple thread claims he uses NikonScan v3.0 on an Intel Mac. ->

    THANK-YOU!
    (2) B & W G3/500 & Gigabit G4/1.6 Ghz Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    I answered this one myself.
Yes, a Nikon LS-5000ED scanner with the USB 2.0 interface works with an Intel Duo Core 1.66 Ghz Mac Mini - 512 MB RAM.
Using the latest NikonScan 4.02 software and OS X.4.6 with all the updates.
    No problems yet.
Hopefully the Universal Binary version of NikonScan will be available soon as I think it could run faster. Especially after Apple stops making the PPC models later this year.

  • Intel mac mini reboots itself !

My intel mac mini seems to reboot itself at odd times..
It will be doing nothing for hours and then i here it reboot. the fan doesnt seem to come on past the really uiet slow speed.. it doesnt seem to be really hot but is warm on the bottom and the apple hardware test shows no faults
    it is a fresh install
I took the lid off and it was fine for days.. put i back on and left it doing nothing and 3 hours later it rebooted.. it is very sporadic
    any ideas

Yicks i grabbed an app which shows the temperature and it sometimes hit 94 degs celcius !!! and the fan doesnt kick in at that temp it often sits at 80 deg C whne unraring big files and cpu sitting at about 80% but still no fan
I spoke to a Tech who said there was 2 firemware updates and i only had one installed.. funny dont know why software update only ever gave me the first firmware update and not the other. Hopefully this fixes it.
interestingly enough with the top off and cpu at 5% temp was 28 deg C with it on it was 45 deg C thats one heck of alot hotter just for putting the lid on
thanks for your help i'll see how it goes and post back

  • Flash Player 10.2.153.1 upgrade not working on 64bit Intel-Mac in Safari 5.0.4

I feel robbed! I want to use my Safari.
The latest upgrade of Flash player does not work.
I don't even remember downloading it, it must've been an automatic update!
I can not play youtube videos nor can I play any games on Facebook.
Who knows what is not working in my Avid!! I have not been working on that lately.
The flash player still works on FireFox, but i have no intention on switching to that.
The first aid has been run a few times.
It will download the free flash player for Intel Mac and it says the install is successful, but it is not there.
I have CS4 and it never bothered or disrupted the free flash player before.
I uninstalled it just in case and nearly lost it! When I tried to reinstall Flash, it said my disc to was blank!
Luckily, a friend in the business of fixing computers was able to get that back! whew.
The flash player from the CS4 is showing up in a folder and will even open when clicked on, but it does nothing. It is version 10.0 r2.
When I go to the place where they say to "see what version of flash you have"
I just get that icon that says to "Get Adobe Flash player".
It down not show the suggested "missing plug-in" pictures.
Yes, I read there is compatibility issues with the 64 bit Mac, but it always worked before!!!
    Help!! Please!!

So the Shockwave Flash plugin in FF is Installed and Enabled. That's why Flash Player is working and why you were able to see the Flash Player logo animation. On the other hand, evidently the Shockwave Flash plugin is either not Installed in Safari or if it is it is Disabled. And that is why it's not working and you can't see the Flash Player logo.
Yes, I know Flash Player can be Installed in any supported 64bit OS. Also I thot that the 64bit browser in Mac was the "default" browser and the "Compatibility layer" had to be used. Similiar to the PC IE8 or IE9, switching over to the Compatibility feature in the browser.
Do you need to activate the Compatibility feature?  I have had other Mac users tell me that their problem was they were using the 64bit browser and found out they had to use the 32bit browser, so I thot it was something they had to do. I would think if it was automatic they would not have had to "do" anything. But like I said I don't use Mac so can only relate what they tell me.
With Safari on either of the test sites, no Flash Player version was displayed?
Look into the HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ directory and see if you have the below two files:
    Flash Player.plugin, flashplayer.xpt
After that see if this thread is of any help: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2725949#2725949
    Thanks,

  • Intel Mac Mini Core Solo - Kernel Panic on Boot

I was wondering if anyone who has purchased the Intel Mac Mini is having issues with Kernel Panics during the booting sequence?
I got a Core Solo from the local Apple store (couldn't wait to play, I'm waiting on the Core Duo I ordered online to come still ). The first thing I did was fire it up check it out for a few minutes, then I put the install disc in and reinstalled a clean OS, with less options because I'm planning on hooking it up to my TV so I don't need space hogs like Garageband etc on my TV computer. I got the updates that popped up, then shutdown the computer. I took it out to the living room and hooked it up to the tv and I got a black message about needing to restart (a kernel panic) right when the blue progress loading bar comes up on boot. I spent a while with it trying to figure out what was wrong, ran the Apple Hardware Test, booted it fine in Safe Boot. Finally I got tired of it and reinstalled the OS again.
It was fine for a day, working fine out on the tv. I brought it back in my room to play with a few things like Darwine, etc. Shut it down, came back an hour or so later booted it up and got the kernel panic on boot. Safe boot still worked fine. I spent some time trying to look for panic logs but didn't see any. I ran the disk utility and did a Full erase and it worked fine. I reinstalled the OS again. Ran MemTestOSX and it worked fine. I left it running the Apple Hardware Test for about 6 hours or more, and it performed perfectly.
This morning it still seemed ok, except sometimes on a cold boot when the blue progress bar screen should come on... my monitor just shows black and the light on the monitor goes inactive. So, I press the button on the back to sleep it, then bring it out of sleep with the keyboard and the OS is sitting there booted.
It seems like a weird combination of software and hardware problems, but maybe it's all hardware problems. I can't get past Safe Boot working when the OS stops loading. Right now the computer is working fine.
I'm waiting for my Core Duo to come in the mail and verify that it works flawlessly, then I'll take the Solo to the store and ask them to look at it.
Anyone have any similar experiences so far?

It seems like the mini is doing alright so far. I think maybe the full erase solved whatever issue it was having. I also got my Core Duo Mini yesterday in the mail and it's performing like a champ. Definitely a nice machine.
I'll close my question for now, since the Core Solo Mini seems alright. But, as a warning don't get on Front Row's bad side. I tried force quitting it because it was taking too long to load the videos folder and then tried shutting down from a terminal and ended up having to turn the machine off.

  • Best app for QT on Intel Mac Mini kiosk?

    Hi all:
I've sent variations of this message off to various folks and fora pertaining to Flash, Director, Livestage, etc., so I thought I'd ask here as well.
I'm working on a very high profile exhibit here in NYC, which is opening to the public on Sept. 11th (draw your own conclusions). It involves a number of standard definition (not HD) video-based kiosks.
These are running on bottom of the line off-the-shelf single-core Intel Mac Minis w/ 512MB RAM. No, we cannot change the platform. We have to make it work with what we have.
We built our prototype in Director. Unfortunately, using QT in Director projects on Intel-based Macs is a non-starter, because Director executables are not Universal Binary yet.
The app is very simple -- a black background that just waits to trigger the video on a mouse click and returns to the black background when the movie is done playing.
The key thing is we need to display the highest possible image quality. We had hoped to use H.264. We've also tried 3IVX and Motion JPEG B, all of which play beautifully in the QT Player but stutter noticeably once in Director. This turns out to be a known problem, and a Universal Binary version of Director isn't due until next year.
I've also tried making a QuickTime Media Link (QTL) file that allows us to "quit when done" so that we can use BuddyAPI to open the program with the QT Player and then drop back to the Director app when done.
That works great, except for the fact that as of OSX 10.3, you can't hide the menu of an app when switching to another app, which looks terrible. Arrgh.
Flash's Player v9 (which is Universal Binary) only runs in a Browser, not as a standalone. So unless there's a browser that will run fullscreen with no chrome, that's out for the foreseeable future as well.
So now I'm thinking about building the whole thing as a self-contained QT movie in Livestage.
Livestage only runs in Rosetta, so I don't know if the QT file I build run natively in the QT player, so that I can use h.264 or 3IVX or whatever without it stuttering. I'd be perfectly happy w/ 3IVX, by the way...
Any help or direction appreciated. We have to have this up and running on site by next Monday, the 14th.
    best,
    FBC

Right -- well, I'm not concerned with editing the video (I use FCP, too).
I completely understand the role of bitrate in making videos look good, and for the record, I've gotten decent looking videos from Motion JPEG B at the Medium (default) quality settings...
But that's not my question here. The problem is playing back any QT codec as an asset in a larger application (eg, Flash, Director, Livestage) running specifically on the Intel Mac Minis. At the root of the problem is lack of universal binary projectors.
At the moment, the best option I have so far is using SAFT to put Safari into Kiosk mode (no title bar, etc.) and using that to play back a Flash SWF file (which give me the needed interactivity) as the default home page.
We're also going to try to roll our own Cocoa app as a wrapper for a 3ivx file. That will almost certainly look better than even a very high bandwidth FLV/SWF.
    Any other ideas appreciated...

  • Intel Mac Mini Duo on WiFi network

Just got my Intel Mac Mini Duo and had upgraded to 10.4.6, firmware, boot camp, Windows XP Pro all running alright.
I had an Airport Extreme and Airport Express based wireless network at home configured with closed network. My PB G4 and another Sony Viao sitting in the same room running nicely over the network to the Internet. Everytime I started the Mini it can locate the closed network and connected but no connection status, and no matter how long I had waited the same thing happened. The only work around is turn off the airport and turn it on again. But still though sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Any one got any clue what's happening or having similar experience?

very long running thread on Mini Core Duo WiFi and Bluetooth problems. see
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=387407&tstart=0
person who originally started that thread, which now has 320 posts, just posted that his mini now works after two rather complete repairs.

  • Intel Mac Mini, Firefox and Java

I'm running an Intel Mac Mini using Firefox; mostly it's fine, but sometimes it behaves as if it and Java Applets have had a falling out.
I have made sure that I have the very latest version of JRE to go with OSX, but when I go to http://www.f1.com and log on to "Live Timing", the frame comes up, but no steaming teacup, then the bottom LH corner says "Done", but the timing area is still blank. Live timing works in Safari & Opera on the same computer, and on any PC running IE6.
Going to the help section on the live timing box says to go to download the latest version of JRE from the Apple.com website - if I try to do this, OSX refuses the download saying it is older than the version already installed.
I have sent questions to both Sun & Mozilla weeks ago, but have received no reply; any ideas?

Dont really have any solution other than the fact that some browsers act funny on certain sites. I think it is specific to the browser, not the computer itself. I have encountered the same thing with certain applets. Also just wanted to give a shoutout from another F1 fan. Good season so far, I think Alonso has the Chin's number this year.

  • Canon imageRunner 3200 with Intel Mac

    Hi,
I got my MacBook Pro in late October. Before that I had a iMac G5 and had it connected via TCP/IP to a Canon ir3200. Worked great.
However, it has never worked on my MBP. Not before or after Leopard. Canon's support for this machine is terrible - they simply send you to their dealer, which, in my case, has absolutely no knowledge of software issues. I have downloaded multiple drivers from the Canon site (none of which are explicitly made for Intel Macs or Leopard OS), and none of them work. I have tried downloading drivers and printing via IP, no luck there, either.
I have even tried leaving my G5 turned on and sharing the printer through it. No luck, I get an error message that after research is a result of the Fiery RIP on the Canon not meshing properly with the Intel chipset. (that is a topic for another day, just telling everyone to keep that option from being suggested).
Does anyone have any ideas, or had any luck working with a similar Canon IR series printer on their Intel or Leopard Mac? I am in desperate need of a resolution...saving files to PDF and sending them to the G5 then printing is a hassle.
Thanks for your time and help.

    The Canon Au web site does have the UB for the Canon printer board. This is the PS Printer Driver Installer v1.80. This is the link;
    http://www.canon.com.au/products/multifunctionals/multifunctionaldigital_devices/irc3100drivers.aspx
As for the W7250, you will have to wait for an update. Our iPF is working but the W series is older and that is the likely issue with the drivers on Leopard. I would expect there to be a newer driver that will work on Leopard, but my experience with Canon (and this is probably the case with other vendors also) is that the current models get priority while the older models can take some time to get updates. Given that Canon doesn't provide direct service/sales on their wide format I am not sure who you could talk to. Maybe try ringing the Sydney office (02 9805 2000) and ask for the National Marketing manager for wide format printers?

  • Retro Migration: Intel mac mini to PPC G4 powerbook

I have a perfectly good top of the range G4 powerbook sitting around and my partner wants to use it to to go mobile, is it possible to use the leopard migration assistant to move data from an intel mac mini to a G4 powerbook, is it all just a normal transfer or is there anything special i need to do?

You want to be careful about using the migration assistant when it comes to copying items from the user library. Rather than use the migration assistant, I'd do a Finder copy of the Documents, Pictures, Music and Movie files and install the programs manually. If you want to give her her bookmarks, contacts, and mail, you can safely copy the Safari folder from the Library to the G4's Library. I'd set up Mail Accounts on the G4 manually and then export the mail from each mail folder and copy them over for import. I'd export the contacts and then import them as well.

  • Intel Macs and .exe files

I have a modem I got from Verizon for use with Verizon DSL. A check at the site of the modem's manufacturer reveals that this modem was made exclusively for Verizon and there are no links to support, etc., for the modem at the manufacturer's website (Westell Versalink 327).
On the DSLReports site, I learned that newer software for my modem is available and that I ought to install it. Of course, it is available only as a .exe file, which I have downloaded to my Mac.
My wife has an Intel Mac. We have never used it in anything but its Mac mode and I am clueless as to whether it is possible, without buying and installing Windows Whatever on that computer, to boot it up in the "other" system, attach the router modem, and run that .exe file and update the software on the modem?
Is there any easy way to go about this or should I just forget about updating the modem software???
    Thanks,
    Bob

If the exe file is only a windows self-extracting zip archive (which is not uncommon), then the free Unarchiver (http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html) will open it on your Mac.
Otherwise, there are other solutions without the purchase of a Windows license, you can run many windows programs with Crossover (http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/) which does not require you to install windows, but still costs $59.99.
I guess the easiest way is just ask a friend who has Windows.

  • When will Quicken run on Intel Mac without Rosetta?

I've been holding off on buying Quicken for my mac mini. Anybody know when Intuit will release a version of Quicken that runs on Intel Mac without needing Rosetta? Thanks,
    Owen

    Kappy,
I just looked at the Quicken Support site:
    https://quicken.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/quicken.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=4014&p_created=1137099411&p_sid=9RFCSgti&p_accessibility=0&p_lva =3793&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MSZwX3Byb2RzP Tk1LDU1MSZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9Mi41NTEmcF9jdj0mcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1pbnRlb A**&p_li=&ptopview=1
This is what it says regarding Quicken 2007 for mac in response to the question "Tell me about running Quicken on the new Intel based macs":
"Quicken for Mac is not a universal binary program and will not run natively on an Intel based Mac. All Intel based Macs come equipped with Rosetta software that enables non-universal binary programs to run on Intel Macs. There are no known issues specific to using Quicken 2006 and later on an Intel Mac with Rosetta."
What is the source of your info? Thanks,
    Owen
