Intel mini with crt

when connected to a crt monitor, does it give murky/blurry image or pale colors like the g4 mini did?

I just got an s-video cable from maplins which when i used my toshiba 24" widescreen crt's setup menu and changed input to s-video, the quality was really impressive. it went from slightly pale to hi-contrast smooth and sharp. Definately worth investing in s-video, however i have not tried the G4 mini to see a comparison but it matchs very favourably to a powerbook 1.67.

  • Anyone using an intel mini with Panasonic HD plasma?

Any of you using a mini (intel or G4) with a panansonic plasma, more to the point a 42PX60?
Just wondered what kind of results you were getting for home cinema is there a HDMI connector for the mac mini that can be used?
Wouldn't be using the mini on the plasma for normal use, but thought it would be good for hooking up for divx/avi etc without having to burn onto discs.

You said that you deleted your Hard Drive but did you Zero the Drive. You'll know if you have as it can take a couple of hours to Zero a large drive.

    yes you can.

  • Intel mini RAM woes...

Ok, I'm pretty saavy when it comes to most things computer related but maybe I'm missing something on this one. I bought my Intel mini with the stock 512mb of RAM and decided I wanted to upgrade to 2gb. The price of RAM is fairly steep right now so I decided I would do this one stick at a time. I purchased my 1GB stick to get me going from Crucial (due to their reputation). I used their memory advisor to make sure I was ordering the correct memory for my machine and verified the memory matched what I ordered before it was installed. I installed the 1gb stick with one of the original 256mb sticks thinking I would maximize what I had available until I was able to purchase my second stick. After doing so I had nothing but problems. I kept getting spontaneous shutdowns and when booting up it would reboot itself sometimes 2 or 3 times before I could finally get to the desktop. So, I'm stumped. I've gone through and double checked that the memory was seated right, ran TechTool Pro 4, ran the Apple hardware test, reset my pram, reset my smc and even took out my 256mb stick to see if having an unmatched pair could be the issue. Everything looked fine and all tests passed. According to Crucial's website it is not "necessary" to have a pair of sticks in the mini to run properly. It even says I should be able to run different speeds and chip capacities. I was still getting the same result just the 1gb Crucial stick by itself. I have since put my 2 original 256mb sticks back in and all seems to be well. I know there is a possibility that I got a bad stick of RAM but I definitely have my doubts based on Crucial's reputation. I know how to handle computer components so I also highly doubt that I damaged the RAM. Is there something I'm missing? Do I need to have a matching pair of sticks (size and speed)? I'm racking my brain on this one, hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on my dilemma.

Okay, new problem... I'm starting to think now that maybe my RAM woes were not RAM woes at all. I'm beginning to think that perhaps I have a failing hard drive. Right away after purchasing my Mac mini I took the original 80GB hdd out and replaced it with a brand new 120GB 5400rpm Seagate hdd. I started having these random shutdown problems and then yesterday after having my new 2GB's of RAM installed for about a week or so (and working flawlessly), I got the screen that tells me that I need to hold down the power button to restart my computer. I do so and it goes to this terminal type screen and runs through all kinds of command lines. I restarted and desktop came back up so I did a couple software updates (1 Airport update, 1 Security update). After that finishes the mini restarts and it hangs at the grey screen w/the apple. So, I shut the computer down and restarted and this time it gets to the 'OS X starting up' screen and hangs when the status bar reaches the end. So, I shut it down and restart yet again. It goes on and on like this and finally ends up getting to the desktop after roughly 6 restarts. I quickly back up everything on my computer and try a few more restarts to see the progression of the problem and try to troubleshoot. At one point I heard the hard drive click 2 times. After another round of numerous restarts I get back to the desktop and by this time alot of my programs were getting the beachball when opened and would never function (i.e. - Disk Utility, System Profiler & Safari). I put my Mac mini OS X install disc in and restarted to wipe everything out and see if my OS got messed up somewhere along the way and was causing my problems. As soon as it boots from the disc I got an error box informing me that It cannot install the OS but allows me to access Disk Utility. I erased and did a 1X pass zero out. I restarted my machine and yet again it hanged at the grey screen with the apple. I restarted a couple more times and now it just tells me it can not install the OS and shuts itself down within a few seconds of this message.
So, this is where I'm at now... Can anyone else confirm that this sounds hard drive related vs. RAM related? The only variable that has changed recently has been the RAM and I refuse to believe that I got bad RAM twice in a row from a company as reputable as Crucial.
Help me AndyO, you're my only hope! (yes, that was a nerdy Star Wars reference)

  • Intel Mini - HDTV with DVI or HDMI Problems

    Hello
With my Samsung LE32 and the Intel Mini I get overscan in HDTV resolutions like 1280x720, so I used DisplayConfigX to go from 1280x720 (overscan) to 1240x680
    128 Front Porch 19
    80 Sync 5
    240 Back Porch 38
    1688 Total 750
As you can see in the following images:
    http://www.romanargenta.com/personal/imagenes/display1.jpg
    http://www.romanargenta.com/personal/imagenes/display2.jpg
    http://www.romanargenta.com/personal/imagenes/display3.jpg
the image is pinned to the top left corner.
Playing with the Front and Back Porches seems to do nothing.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

The website for DisplayConfigX has a wonderful FAQ section that explains very well it's operation. Unfortunately, most of everything in that FAQ applies to displays that are based on CRTs with magnetic deflection systems. For example, the whole section on "How to get rid of overscan."
For a modern, matrix addressed technology such as LCD, DLP, LCOS, Plasma and whatever, most of the FAQ does not apply. It would be nice if the author updated the FAQ with such a disclaimer to stop giving people false hope that overscan, image centering and such things can be controlled by DisplayConfigX on their modern displays when almost certainly it cannot.
Can you possibly control overscan from your Samsung? Either directly through any user settings or, if need be, through a secret service mode? I think that will be your only hope.

  • IPhone no longer can sync with iTunes on Mac Intel Mini

I have an original iPhone (not 3G). It was working fine until today. Today when I booted my mac mini, Software update said that there was an iTunes update. I downloaded and installed version 8.2 of iTunes. When I connected my iPhone to my mac mini (Intel running 10.4.11), which is what I use to sync my iPhone, iTunes didn't see it. It was as if the iPhone wasn't connected to the mac.
I thought maybe it was the cable. So, I switched cables. It still didn't sync (or even see the iPhone).
I have been charging my iPhone using a wall adapter, so I tried both cables with the wall adapter. The iPhone charged just fine using both cables.
I used the cables and tried to sync my iPod Classic (120GB) with iTunes. I can sync my iPod Classic with iTunes just fine with either cable.
I have an 17" Powerbook G4 running 10.5.7 and I thought I'd try to see if it could see the iPhone. The Powerbook is running iTunes 8.1.1, I haven't upgraded it yet. I was able to see the iPhone and I could try to sync, but the iPhone isn't sync'ed with that iTunes library so the sync doesn't do anything, but at least the Powerbook sees the iPhone and connects with it (and iTunes sees the iPhone as well).
I'm upgrading to iTunes 8.2 to see if the Powerbook can still see the iPhone (just seeing if it was the iTunes upgrade that broke the iPhone sync). Well, the upgrade on the powerbook didn't seem to hurt its ability to see the iPhone.
I'm back at square one. My mac Intel mini running 10.4.11 can't see my iPhone and nothing I do seems to help it see the iPhone, but I can sync my ipod classic using the same cable.
I'm now wondering if there is something wrong with the iPhone. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Sometimes a glitch can happen with an itunes upgrade that can cause itunes to no longer recognize your iphone. If you have already tried to restart your computer and tried different usb ports, I would try this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224?viewlocale=en_US
    Hope it helps
Your only removing the outer software so it shouldn't affect your itunes libraries or files.

  • Will logic pro x run on my mac mini dual core intel i5 with 4gb of ram and mountain lion ?

    hi there guys,
will logic pro x run on my mac mini dual core intel i5 with 4gb of ram and mountain lion ?
I'm not sure if my machine is 64 bit - it is the current model base mac mini.
Many thanks for any help you can offer !

SkiJumptoes is right. 4GB is not enough to comfortably run Logic X.
Your Mac Mini will need DDR3 SODIMM RAM. That website seems incredibly steep though. I guess that's the price of finding it for you. You're better off going to any below:

  • New Mini (HDMI) with CRT Big Screen TV (RP)

Is anyone using the new Mini with a CRT TV. I have a Mitsubishi WS-65813 rear projection TV that I'd like to connect to the New Mini using HDMI to DVI. I had one of the older Mini's and the problem was the screen on the TV was not full screen or it was over-scanned, depending on the option I picked.
My question is if I connect the New Mini (HDMI-DVI) to MY TV will it fit native, meaning will it fit the screen without the above mentioned? I'd love to have the ability to watch HULU.
PS. I'd love to get a new LCD TV but the WS-65813 has a superior picture, and it has a 65 inch screen. Only 1080i, 480p, 480i, and Firewire. NO 720p.

So there's and overscan and a underscan now? Is this different from previous generation Mini's?
They actually removed the overscan function. I'm not sure how many people were using it. Very few I suspect (thus why it was removed).
The underscan function is implemented as a slider. You move it to the right until you can just see the perimeter of the Mac desktop.
Ideally, it should be all the way to the left, in a perfect world. Because you are losing resolution by using the underscan function.
But obviously many TVs do require it. And Apple kindly lets you adjust it to just the level that you need for your particular display device.
I don't know if the the underscan function is limited to only certain screen resolutions. I can't test it right now. But I will when I can. Or perhaps someone else in this discussion will have an opportunity to do so and share their findings.

  • Office on mac mini with intel chip

Will Office X run on a mac mini with an intel chip? I have a friend that just bought one and he is wondering if he should buy office now or wait for a new version to come out.

Installs and runs fine on my Duo. If it's bought now, you'd also be entitled to buy the next version at the upgrade price (well, that's how it's worked with the PC versions of Office) so it'll save a bit of money in the process

  • Performace issues with a new intel Mini

Here's a quick question from a new mac user.
I've just bought a 1.66 intel dual mini with 512MB and to be honest I'm quite surprised how slow it is. It certainly doesn't seem any faster than the ancient PC it replaced. I get considerable lags when switching between applications, for example. Using Word I get delays between hitting the key and letters appearing on screen.
I don't use it for anything special at all just yet - Word, Safari, palm sync stuff. I notice using Activity Monitor that I only have a tiny bit of free memory (7mb or so). Is there anything I can do to improve performance? Has anyone else had similar experiences? I'm reluctant to start doing much else if the performance is already that slow. Any tips would be most welcome.
Will I need to increase my memory? If so, it seems a little disingenuous of apple to market a product that is not really up to running its OS.
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Allbran, welcome!
You are certainly not the first to be surprised. As others have mentioned, 512 Meg is not enough to run substantial legacy apps like MS Word and have other programs open too and have good performance.
MS Word was designed for the older PPC processor and runs in emulation (Rosetta) on the Intel Macs.
The only practical solutions are to add more RAM or switch to applications that were programmed for the Intel Macs.
See this link for a discussion of the issues and the range of solutions, which ended in a satisfied user (she upgraded to 2 Gig):
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3463183
My personal preference would be that anyone selling Macs would make it clear that 512 Meg RAM is not sufficient for anything but casual MS Word use. Unfortunately sellers don't do this, and I suspect many buyers aren't ready to hear it either.
    An additional discussion here:

"Having just upgraded my Intel 512 to 2gb, I can tell you that the beach-ball is at rest. I went from complete frustration to really enjoying the machine. I can now run office, dreamweaver, Safari, itunes, and other apps concurrently with no slowdowns at all.
In fact, this is the best-performing Mac I've ever owned, and that covers a lot of machines!"

  • Intel Mini has problem with Mail/internet after firmware update (0.1)

    Hello there.
I'm not sure, but I think my Intel Mini has gone bonkers after a firmware update (Mac mini-SMC-firmware-updater (1.0)
What happend is, that connecting to (both of) my two Gmail and Tiscali accounts is not working anymore. (no connection through gate 995)
I did not change anything in the accountsetup.
But now I notice that even my torrents (oops) can't connect anymore.
I think this all took place after the firmware update.
On Dutch sites I do not seem to get any useable answers, so I thought it be wise to go a bit more international.
Could anyone help me out on this one?
    Cheers.
    Marco

    Wizzard,
Having the same problem here.  After updating the firmware the wireless connection to the network is unstable.  After rebooting the laptop most of the time I get "Low or no connectivity" message.  Sometimes it connects and dies after a few minutes.  And sometimes it connects and stays connected until shut down.
What do you mean by "u have to reset it for 30 seconds and then reconfigure it"?  Do you mean you actually have to reset the router to default settings and reconfigure, or just power down and bring it back up?
    Thanks,
    Stas

  • Is it better to node my G5 and host with intel mini?

i see the forum often using the intel mini as a node for the G5. is it actually more beneficial to use the G5 as the node for the mac mini?

From the way Apple introduced the node feature, it was interesting to me that the suggestion was to use the less powerful machine as the master and the more powerful as the node. This was usually presented as PowerBook master and G5 node. In your case, the computers are more closely matched in terms of processing, but other factors may be important - graphics, bus speeds, total system memory and so on. My guess is that these capabilities will point you one way or another.
Also, if you have been using the G5 as a master for awhile, it makes sense to use the Mini as a node - less setup time, less debugging. Even if you get 5% more performance by using them the other way around - are you really that close to the edge?

  • Boot Camp on mini with SL: can't install Vista or Win7

Have run Boot Camp Assistant on Mac mini with Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and successfully created a partition, but process hangs after "start installation" with an apparent re-boot, followed by a gray screen. The install disc appears to be recognized - have tried with Vista (upgrade) and Win 7 (full version) install media, using both the Mac mini internal DVD drive as well as an external USB DVD drive.
Questions: 1) any chance of success using an ISO image on a bootable USB stick?; 2) I have a successful Boot Camp image install on another, more recent mini. Would a clone of it copied to my problematic mini solve the problem?
My hardware: Mac mini 1.66 Intel Core Duo, 2 GB RAM, 100 GB HD, Intel GMA950 graphics chip.

Ok....It appears that my cpu heatsink was not bolted down correctly. After fixing that the temp idels around 45 in BIOS... *sigh*

  • How to connect an external HD to a 2007 Mac Mini with FireWire

I have a 2007 Mac Mini with a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 1 GB of RAM, and an 80 GB HD. I recently migrated to Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.5) from Tiger (OS X 10.4.11). I purchased a 500 GB external HD from Seagate which I want to use to back up both my wife's notebook PC and my Apple. My Mac Mini has a Firewire 400 (6-pin) female connector on the back. The external HD can connect to a Mac via a Firewire 800 male 9-pin connector. How do I connect the male FW 800 9-pin to the female FW 400 6-pin port? This may sound obvious, but the solution is more challenging than I imagined. The 9- to 6-pin adaptors I've seen online combine a female 6-pin end with a male 9-pin end. I need the reverse of that (female 9-pin FW 800 to male 6-pin FW 400 adaptor)! I bought a 9- to 6-pin cable this week, but ended up with two male 9-pin plug ends, and no way to connect them. Is a solution available using FW, or should I bail and go with a USB 2.0 connection instead?

Most external firewire drives have removable cables that plug into "female" ports on the hard drive. Is the firewire cabling on your external drive different from this? (What is the model number of the external drive?)
If the cable is removeable, simply buy a 6-pin-to-9-pin firewire cable (male on both ends).
monoprice.com is a good place to find these cheaply and in the length you need.
