Intel/Non Intel Tiger install mix up on HD replacement

Objective:
On an iMac intel trying to simply swap out an original 250GB internal drive that died with a 1TB and re-instal Tiger.
*Situation Now*:
Booting off the original install disks for this intel iMac, when get to the select destination drive screen, there is no destination drive to select.
Using Utilities>Disk Utilities the drive is listed, but oddly is listed as a 7.3TB drive. Attempting to format the drive returns "A Disk Erase failed with the error: Input/Output Error".
If I start the iMac in target mode and connect it to my non intel PowerBook G4 running 10.4.11 the drive can be formated/partitioned with no problem using Disk Utilities on this machine and works perfectly.
What might be going on here and how do I get this thing going?
Original drive was a Western Digital Caviar Se 250GB and has been replaced with Western Digital Caviar Green (WD10EARS).
History:
When I first started up the iMac with the new drive it started up with the expected question mark folder. I tried to start up using a Tiger installation DVD but it wouldn't start (the reason was I had used the Tiger disk for my non intel PowerBook by mistake). At this point I suspected wrongly that the DVD drive might be suspect and so using the same disks in my PowerBook hooked up to the iMac in Target Mode, saw the drive, formated and installed Tiger. Disconnected and re-started the iMac, which of course wouldn't boot up. At this point I realised I'd used the wrong install disk and there was nothing wrong with the DVD drive in the first place. So now I have the correct install disk and am in the above *Situation Now*

Hi,
First off, you do not want to use a "Green" drive as a boot drive, besides being much slower, they sleep or step down on their own schedule, is it too late to return it?
Also, is the Mac this is going in SATA1 or SATA2, if SATA1 then you need a jumper on pins 5 & 6 to slow it down.

  • FC Pro between intel - non intel

    Hey,
I'm sorry if this has already been posted numerous times, but I coulnd't find any topic that truly answerred my problem.
Is it possible to use the latest FC Pro on my new MacBook Pro 2.33 Ghz, I guess this is FCP5, and use my project files on the older FCP 4.5 in my school?
Can I save the project files as previous FCP project files?
Of will I need to install FCP 4.5 on my MacBook Pro too?

    Welcome to the forum!
You need to be specific when looking at FCP version numbers. As of now the latest version is 5.1.2 which is VERY different from FCP 5. FCP 5 won't run properly on an IntelMac - you'll need FCP 5.1 (universal). See http://apple.com/universal/crossgrade for details.
FCP project files are NOT backward compatible with older FCP versions. However, you should be able to export an XML file from a later version project and use that file to build a new project in an older version of FCP (but no older than FCP 4.1).

  • Re-install of Tiger 10.4.11 non intel now Itunes wont work

Hello all. decided to clean my old imac G5 non intel by reinstalling tiger and now itunes won't go at all. It launched as expected but when you try to go to the itunes stores it states in the status bar 'connecting' but then nothing happens. Have installed the most recent versions up to 8.2 but in each case it wont work.
I'm thinking there must be a config problem somewhere in itunes. Have deautherised  then reuatherised and am able to sign in, but still no joy any help appreciated - Jimmy

I don't know the iTunes requirements for using the Store but it would not surprise me at all if iTunes 8 no longer works with the iTunes Store.  I know my iTunes 7.5 stopped working with the Store several years ago.  I hear they recently changed how the Store appears in iTunes which suggests they did a software change and probably didn't even consider anybody would still be using iTunes 8.  Apple is pretty fast off the mark for abandoning support for older platforms and I would be surprised if iTunes 8 continued to work with the Store for this long.
iTunes 9.2.1 (the newest that will run under Tiger but I don't know if even this will still connect to the Store) - http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1056

  • Snow install on a non Intel machine

If I'm upgrading a G4 from Tiger, can I only go as far as Leopard, or will Snow even allow itself to install PPC compatible items, or just give a non Intel install error?

    Hi-
If I'm upgrading a G4 from Tiger, can I only go as far as Leopard,
OS X 10.5x is as far as PPC Macs go.
Snow Leopard is not installable in PPC machines.

  • Will Install Disks for a MacBook (10.4.6) work on a non-Intel Mac?

I have got hold of new and unused install disks for a MacBook. Its OSX Tiger 10.4.6. Although all the new Macs are now Intel Duo, will this still be able to be installed on my iBook G4 512Mb?
Or will it only work on a Mac with an Intel Duo processor?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512Mb

The story has now changed somewhat. Copied from your original post in this thread.
I have got hold of new and unused install disks for a MacBook. Its OSX Tiger 10.4.6. Although all the new Macs are now Intel Duo, will this still be able to be installed on my iBook G4 512Mb?
Although this 10.4.6 install package for an iBook may work on your iBook, usually the build must be identical also.
A link I provided in one of my previous posts in this thread.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
This install package may install OK on your iBook but if the build is not identical, it may not work correctly after the fact.
Since the bods at the Apple Store you visited said this makes no difference - this iBook 10.4.6 install package you acquired will work on ANY non-Intel Mac, what are you worried about? Use it but to be on the safe side, I would first get the bods at this Apple Store to provide you a free exchange for a Tiger retail install install package if your install package doesn't work.

  • Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) Now have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but won't accept serial number

Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) along with prior Photoshop versions. Now I have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but it won't accept my original serial number (Starts with PSW401, etc.).

I know what you are saying. I had purchased the CS5.5 upgrade, and a week later got the CS6 upgrade. I did this back in 2012. I had a old Mac Power PC which does not allow you to install CS5.5 or CS6 because it was not an intel processor. So even though I had the upgrades I never installed them. I waited until my old MAC died which it did this past weekend. And now that I have a new iMac I tried to install the new software. All of my past upgrades referenced my original Photoshop that was still resident on my old Mac. But since the install no longer has that reference because of the new computer, it will not accept any of my past serial numbers that it needs for the install.

ok thanks, that's what I tought, looks like apple machines are only good for two - three years, the software developers are ahead of the hardware to a certain point, love macs but this is forcing us to buy new macs just to keep  up with development. There was a time it was the opposite.
By the time we get up on new stuff it's time to change again. Gotta be rich to deal with macs ...LOL

  • Sony HDR-SR11 /AVCHD/NON-INTEL MAC/HELP

I have called both sony and apple tech support and both offered little help today.
I have a Sony HDR-SR11 that I shot some HD content with. The computer registers that the camera is there as an external HDD. Sony's FAQ suggested that I save the AVCHD file to my HDD and it should work....NOPE
I hooked it up to a PC and installed the software it comes with and I was able to view my files but not export them into a normal format.
I have 2 sets of files one set is .m2t and the other is .mts both say they are Unix Executable files..***!
I have a Power MAc G5 running Leopard and Final Cut Pro 6 I ran the software update and it says that as of today 100% up to date yet it says that FCP should be 6.0.2 mine says 6.0
Apple support said that it may not even work on a non-intel Mac.....HELP
anyone get this to work, supposedly Imovie work s with it but the files are grayed out in the menus for imovie so I dunno all I know is I need this footage off the camera ASAP.
    Thanks

I came here actually looking for a different solution and not the one I'm about to say... but I will tell you that the new iMovie will import the video straight off the camera (in either 960x540 or 1920x1080). It's not ideal, but it works.
In fact, I'm doing so right now, but I came here hoping there might be news of a new fix so that FCP will import it directly (it will not, log & capture will not do it, just so others are clear on this).
That said, the video off the camera looks very nice. I'm still happy with the camera, even if I do have to do one hoop jump before I can edit.

  • Transferring from old non intel iMac to new intel iMac

I have a non intel iMac with 10.5.8 and no 800 Firewire. I have just purchased a new iMac with Snow Leopard and of course, no 400 firewire. The wrong adapter (400 to 800) was sent with the machine. The setup instructions said I could use ethernet after installing a "Setup Program" on the old Mac that was included on the new Mac's disk. When I tried to install the program, it wouldn't install as I did not have 10.6 on the old computer.
Please tell me the best way to set up this new computer: using the ethernet cable and migration assistant, or wait and get the correct adapter and use a firewire cable to transfer. I have not set up the new computer; it is just sitting right now.
    Many thanks.

You're probably referring to the section of this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3231
in the first point under *Starting your migration:*
"Always ensure that the computer you are migrating from is updated with the latest releases of Apple Software. Determine if your computer is up-to-date by going to the Apple menu and selecting Software Update. Apply all the latest updates, including the Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update, before you start your migration."
The Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update link is to this: http://support.apple.com/downloads/Migrationand_DVD_and_CD_SharingUpdate
Which also refers to this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3174
As I read that, it seems to indicate that it's only needed on 10.5.5, so it may not apply to your 10.5.8 Mac.
Try using +Setup Assistant+ anyway -- it may work.
See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups? or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum, for more info and step-by-step instructions.
If you've already set up a user account on the new Mac, you'd have to erase the internal HD and reinstall OSX to use Setup Assistant.
Or, use the similar +Migration Assistant+ per the pink box in the link above. Just note that you can't be logged on to the new Mac with an account that has the same name as any on the old one -- see the last window there.

  • Uninstall FCP 5.0 and reinstall 5.1 universal binary version on non intel

I have a non intel G5 and just got another intel based Mac, i heard they have fixed the issus with compressor 2.0 in the new version of Final Cut Pro 5.1 which i have also bought and was wondering how to go about uninstalling and reinstalling FCP so that i can take advantage of compressor 2.1 and FCP 5.1. I have the rest of the FCP Studio on my non intel based Mac also but i will be leaving it installed as is, can i just update my FCP 5.1 with the FCP 5.1 disc or would it be better to do i full uninstall and than a reinstall. I have used app zapper in the past on other apps, can i use it for FCP as well, Thanks Charles

  • What version of firefox us used for o/s x non-intel?

I have an iMac with the non-dual core intel processor. When I updated Firefox, it gave me a version of 3.6.8 on o/s x. However, my intel based macs also running o/s x only updated to 3.6.13. Is there a difference version for intel based vs non intel based?

It is important for security to use the latest version of Firefox.
If you have a problem with say a single particular site one unofficial workaround is to install Firefox Portable, as an additional browser that may be used on the problem website. For the day-to-day browsing use Firefox.
Using an alternative browser such as IE or Chrome could be considered. That is secure, but does not enable use of Firefox addons.

  • Would PSE8 work with non-Intel G5 PPC Macs?

Just received the PSE8 package I ordered at school, and when ready to install on my Power PC (PPC) iMac G5 running under Mac OS 10.5.8, I decided to read the system requirements on the side of the box, and that's when I realized that only "Dual-Core Intel Mac" was listed.
I plan to buy a new iMac in the near future, but for the time being would like to know anything you may have to say about this compatibility problem I am facing. Do you know if PSE8 works with non-Intel Macs?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the answer to my question. I was afraid of that, but had to check to make sure. Will probably rush the purchase of a new iMac at an educational discount or something.
    Thanks again.

  • Intel and non Intel versions of Applications.

In upgading to Snow Leopard, I became conscious of many of the programs having an Intel and non Intel version. Such as "Dashboard" and "Dashboard-Intel". If I trash the non-intel version: will the programs work correctly? It would save a lot of disk space....
    Thanks
    asuch

Which Application folder? There is the root-level one, which you see when you double-click on your boot volume icon and one for each user, if you've ever selected to install only for that user. If the former, give some examples, since I only see one of each application displayed there. If the latter, all of user's Application folders are nonexistent.

  • Using MacBook backup with non-Intel Mac laptop

I'm scheduled for a computer replacement at work (not a new one, but a hand-me-down from someone else). I was originally told it would have to be a Windows PC (grrr), but then it turned out that someone who recently left for another job had a Mac laptop that I can have instead. I'm not sure exactly what model it is, but it's my understanding that it's only a year or two old. I assume it will be an iBook or a PowerBook.
I'm wondering if I can use my MacBook backup (which is on an external harddrive and is bootable) to boot up a non-Intel Mac laptop. Since I have to send my MacBook back in for repair (second round of RSD), I was hoping that once I get this older laptop I could just boot from my external and keep on working as if I still had my MacBook (without the ability to use Windows of course). I assume all the programs (except Parallels) would be compatible, but would the system files work?

I don't think it will allowed you to boot from that external that installed with os X 10.4.x (compiled for macintel version).
But surely you can use the data in it if you have proper or similar program at the older portable mac.
But if you willing to try it, it won't hurt, just connect that external and restart while pressing the option key, and if it shows as an option for start up, click on it and see how it goes. If nothing happen, simply shutdown the laptop and restart regularly using its own hd.
    Good Luck.
