Intel or not intel???

Hi all!
My G4 iMac is giving up the ghost and I am thinking about getting a new iMac. But I have heard that many of the programmes I use (mainly Adobe) don't support the intel chip so I would have to use rosetta and this can be slow.
Is it worth up-grading or just getting an old G5 for the moment??
Thanks for any help.

I wouldn't get a G-5. Depending on the age of your G-4 the Adobe applications you use may actually run faster under rosetta than on your old G-4. The Intel chips are the future and the applications will be updated soon enouogh. Why lock yourself in to a dying technology?
Bottom line is that it is your money. If the G-5 was really cheap, then maybe. IMHO if it is more than 25% of the cost of an Intel model I, personally, would not do it. Of course, you also have to factor in the cost of the new Adobe apps when they come out. You might want to check if there will be an upgrade price or if you will have to spend full price. That cost has to be included in your decision.
Tough decision, but if it were me I would go with an new Intel model.

  • Intel or not intel?  Advice wanted.

    I need some advice here...
I've decided to buy a dual g5 imac, but now I can't decide to go with the intel or not...I'll be primarily using the maching for dvd authoring, editing and motion graphics...so I already have final cut studio, combustion, after effects, photoshop etc.,...according to Apple Support, the Adobe programs will run but not in the true intel environment, and then there's some 50 dollar upgrade fee to get FCP studio to work on the intel imac...is the intel really worth it? I can't decide whether to get an intel or not...I don't really want to lay down tons of cash for new software...what should I do? Thanks.

Moving up from a G4 you're going to see a big improvement in either case but there are a lot of reasons to go with the Core Duo, the first being performance: I had a 2.0Ghz G5 iMac and can tell you the Intel box is far speedier. There are a lot of improvements: memory & bus speeds, graphics chip, not just the dual CPUs. As applications are better optimized for the duo core performance will get better & better.
The second big reason is support. While Apple promises to support the PPC architecture far into the future you can be sure not a dime of new R & D is going into that platform, either at Apple or elsewhere like Adobe: it is the past, and Intel is the future.
Third, and this may mean nothing to you, eventually someone will figure out how to dual boot Windows on these InteliMacs and your software choices will expand exponentially. I bet there will be tri-boot possibilities as well, with Windows, OS X, and Linux available on call from a start-up menu, within a year.
Last, the G5 iMacs are already discontinued and if you are to find one new you'll be buying the very last stock of a dying breed... not what I'd want to invest in, personally.

  • To Intel or not Intel? That is the question.

    Greetings.
My G4 dual 450 is getting long in the tooth. I've been using 10.3.9 with no problems; however, it may be time to upgrade to Tiger.
As I don't want to spend money on new software, and I'm pretty happy with what I'm using (primarily Office 2004), I'm thinking of buying a used iMac without the Windows capability, rather than going for a new dual core 2, or whatever they're packing. I know it'd save me a substantial amount, considering my needs.
Aside from warranty issues, is there a downside to this strategy? Will Leopard run on a non-Intel machine?
    thanx

    Hi Jerry Kaiser;
You will be going from a very old box to an old box. Personally if I were doing that upgrade I would go with an Intel box instead of the older PowerPC box.
The Intel can execute PowerPC binaries with Rosetta. This will give you a performance hit but the Intel box should be so much faster then your old G4 that you will see an overall increase in performance going with it.
By going with the Intel it will last longer and you can gradually upgrade the software over time to get back the lost performance with Rosetta.
As far as Leopard and non-Intel machines go that is speculation and no one knows for sure. Having said that if Leopard were to cut off all non-Intel machines, it would not have much of a market because most of the Macs out there are non-Intel so I seriously doubt that Apple would do that.
    Allan.

Sorry, but that is correct. You need Snow Leopard to sync your phone and the latest version of iTunes and you old G5 cannot run that.

  • Can video chat with Imac non-intel but not with Powerbooks

    Hi,
I have a Linksys WRT54G firmware v. 1.0.6 connected to a Comcast Cable modem. My IMac Intel Duo (OS 10.4.6) is connected via ethernet cable to the router. I am set to DHCP on router and IMac. My Quicktime settings is at 1.5mb, I have tried with firewall off and on with the appropriate ports open. I have tried upnp on and off.
I can connect to other Imacs (non-intel) but not to powerbook G4's. With the Powerbooks I can text chat, but sometimes they can see my text, but I can't see theirs. And every video chat is a fail to respond with the powerbook, but they can connect with others.
Is there anything else I can do?
    Please help. Thanks.

    Hi cmbell,
Do you know how to access your modem ?
This should give you somewhere to turn off DHCP.
Then you go to System Preferences > Network and select the connection method you are using.
    Then select the TCP/IP tab.
In the drop down that says Using DHCP change it to Manually. (or Manual with DHCP if doing James' way)
Type the IP you wish to use in the next entry field.
Copy the subnet mask form the Using DHCP
    Copy any DNS servers listed.
Copy the router IP address which will be the modem or router in question.
    Hit Apply.
    Done.

  • Cloning Old iMac G4 HD to new (not Intel) G5 iMac HD????

I have a 3yr old white round-base, flat panel iMac and need to replicate my 60gb hard drive to a new 160gb G5 (not Intel version) iMac flat panel hard drive??? I plan to connect the 2 via a Firewire cable, then transfer the hard drive contents..any recommendations on how I should do this? Any input would be appreciated...Thanks!

    Hi,Several different options including:
Target mode. Switch off the iMac G4. Connect the two machines via FW. Boot the iMac G4 holding down 'T'. You'll then enter 'Firewire Target Mode'. On the iMac G5 the iMac G4's hard disk will appear underneath Macintosh HD (but will be coloured orange) - I'd rename them to something other than Macintosh HD to avoid confusion. You can then drag and drop at your will. Just drag the orange icon to the trash when you're finished and hold in the iMac's power button to switch it off.
Use Tiger's Migration Assistant that automates and guides you through the above. MA will copy about 99% of your settings/documents/applications, icon positions, desktop picture, dock items etc. But most users notice a few errors/items not working properly - hence why I say 99%. MA can be found in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant.

    imac intel monitor not working

    Hi Robby62,
    please do report back.
Also, after you have successfully installed the BootCamp Drivers from the Leopard DVD (which are version 2.0, btw.) you might want to download the 2.1 version update here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/bootcampupdate21 forwindowsvista32.html
The update also has to be installed while in Windows.
    Have Fun

  • Why will my Mac 8,1 intel desktop not stay in sleep mode for more than 5 seconds?

Why will my Mac 8,1 intel desktop not stay in sleep mode for more than 5 seconds?
Have tried repeatedly and end up shutting down instead of "sleeping:.

Hello, most usually it's some USB device causing that, but...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

I've made a few changes that were mentioned on the Catalyst wiki. They are below:
    1. /etc/default/grub
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset i915.modeset=1"
    2. /etc/modprobe.d/no_radeon.conf
    blacklist radeon
Unfortunately I can't use open-source driver for radeon since I'm getting random frezees of my PC. Especially when some video-content is playing in my browser.
It doesn't relates to main topic (I hope), but let this log be placed here:

  • Windows Update for windows 7 won't update the Intel Corporation - Display - Intel (R) HD Graphics

Hi there, a couple of times the windows update on my windows 7  won't update the Intel Corporation - Display - Intel (R) HD Graphics.
    What could be the problem?
    How can this be solved?

    Hello palette35,
    Welcome to the community.
You’re having problems with windows not updating the graphics.
It could be security setting blocking the update
You can go to HP.com and download the driver directly.
Here is a link to the site. You’ll need your product number.
Let me know if this helps.
